12) Spiro, Horwin and the Ogun State Government

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX646w0LzkU?si=d54KVTnNKrTUT6jX

Spiro was founded in 2019 by Africa Transformation and Industrialization Fund (ATIF), an Abu Dhabi-based investment firm and its headquarters is in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

The company has grown to become the biggest provider of electric motorcycles in Africa. It has led an e-bike revolution in Kenya, Rwanda, Benin Republic and Togo. It also has presence in Uganda and Tanzania.

Spiro teamed up with Horwin, a Chinese manufacturer of electric motorcycles and batteries, to provide electric motorcycles to customers in many countries across Africa. These motorcycles are sold without batteries and Spiro also runs solar charging stations and battery swap systems that enable the motorcycle riders to rent batteries for a fee.

The motorcycles are used for public transportation and delivery services and they are cheaper to own and run than petrol powered motorcycles.

President Bola Tinubu was the special guest of honour at the 63rd Independence anniversary celebration of Benin Republic on August 1st, 2023. Many Nigerian state governors and other dignitaries were also invited to the event.

Spiro had a demonstration for Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and this demonstration was witnessed by Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq of Kwara and other dignitaries.

Spiro's e-bikes are very popular in Benin Republic and Governor Dapo Abiodun was looking for cheaper sources of energy and exploring electric and CNG options after the removal of petrol subsidies in Nigeria, so Spiro had the demonstration for him in Benin Republic.

Ogun State adopted the e-bike solution and okada riders in Ogun were registered for the battery swapping system and they also received the e-bikes.

Spiro is building a $40m assembly plant in Ogun at which electric motorcycles and batteries will be assembled. Spiro had previously signed a deal with Horwin to build assembly plants in selected African countries.

8 ) Trekk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n12JCFapkBo?si=Z_JyFHI1AoRwlJYw

Chief Ojo Maduekwe was minister of transportation from 2001 till 2003. At that time he suggested that Nigerians needed to cycle more in order to reduce traffic jams, improve their health and contribute to a cleaner environment. Leading by example, he actually began cycling to Federal Executive Council meetings.

However, he was heavily criticised by Nigerians who claimed that he was taking us back to the stone age. Some Nigerians asked how Chief Maduekwe expected them to cycle from Oshodi to Victoria Island each day and still be able to work.

I agreed with Chief Maduekwe and I understood what he was trying to do.

The idea isn't that you should cycle from Oshodi to Victoria Island everyday. There are some journeys that people regularly undertake in their neighbourhoods. The distance is a little too far to walk and a little too close for a car ride, but people often drive or take commercial vehicles to those places, places like the barbershop/salon, supermarket/grocery store, cybercafe, football viewing center, etc in their neighbourhood. These people end up contributing to the traffic jam by driving or taking public transport to these places. You can ride to these places instead of adding to the congestion.

I remember a day that I drove to a place just 3 streets away from my house and I got caught up in a monster traffic jam on my way back. I wished that I had walked to the place.

A company called Trekk has now introduced another environmentally friendly way to make those trips while avoiding traffic jams. They have created an electric scooter sharing programme.

Founded by Isaac Oyedokun, Praise Sakanwi, and Jean-Noël Bayi, Trekk is described as Africa's first electric scooter-sharing platform.

To use the platform, you download the Trekk app, locate a Trekk scooter, scan the QR code on the scooter, and pay to unlock it.

However, it is limited to a certain group of users, such as students or people who commute within a small community.

Oyedokun (CEO) said this was done to guard against theft and the safety of riders. Every community where the scooters are available is geo-fenced so the scooters can't be used outside them.

They are cheap and easy to use and they have swappable batteries.

The scooters are currently available in some Nigerian universities such as Lagos State University and Pan-Atlantic University.

6) Max

Max was founded by Adetayo Bamiduro and Chinedu Azodoh. It started in 2015 as a logistics/delivery company, went into the motorcycle taxi (okada) business in 2017, but was forced to leave that business due to government restrictions on the operations of motorcycle taxis. It therefore went into the electric vehicle business in 2021.

It said that it moved into the electric vehicle market because electric vehicles are:

Cheaper to run: Charging an electric vehicle costs less than ₦3/km, compared to ₦6/km for petrol. This means transport operators can save significantly on expenses.

More affordable: Electric vehicles are 50% cheaper to operate than petrol engines, thanks to lower maintenance costs and less frequent servicing.

Produce no carbon emmission: Electric vehicles are 100% eco-friendly as they run on electrically powered engines which do not emit toxic gases in the environment, unlike diesel and petrol.

Produce less noise: EVs operate more quietly than petrol-powered vehicles, minimizing noise pollution and fostering a more peaceful environment.

More sustainable: The future of mobility is electric vehicles and they are propelling Africa several steps forward into the future.

3) Phoenix

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy_aluvpaqU

Mustapha Gajibo became fascinated with solar power when his father bought a solar powered lamp to illuminate their house at night. He set up a solar powered mobile phone charging station while he was still a school boy and his charging station beat the competition which were using petrol generators to charge phones. This was because his fees were less than the fees of the petrol powered charging stations.

The Boko Haram terrorist group blew up the transmission lines that supplied electricity to Maiduguri. The city was in darkness, yet this was the time (2017) that Mustapha Gajibo decided to provide public transportation services using electric vehicles.

He was able to achieve this feat by building solar powered charging stations and converting petrol powered minibuses (Korope) into electric vehicles.

Mustapha Gajibo rented these buses out to drivers who used them for the day. Passengers preferred the electric buses because they didn't have to waste time at the petrol stations (when the drivers go to fill their tanks) and the electric buses were quieter and cheaper.

Gajibo soon had the idea to build his own electric buses, because the converted minibuses were too heavy. That made in Nigeria bus is callee the Kaande.

Phoenix Kaande

Kaande means "Ours" in the Kanuri Language (the main language that is spoken in Borno State).

The Kaande can cover 100km on a full charge, accepts battery swapping, is 7 seater, approved for short range intra city mass transit and cost only ₦4.8M (as at 2023).

He is financing the project himself from the money he gets from converting petrol powered vehicles to CNG and electric vehicles. He is also using funds that he got from his public transport business. He said that he did not recieve any money from the government.

Car Talk13 Electric Vehicle Companies That Provide Products And Services In Nigeria. by naptu2(op):
13 Electric Vehicle Companies That Provide Products And Services In Nigeria.

The removal of petrol subsidies has led to a diversification of the Nigerian energy market. Companies and individuals are exploring cheaper alternative sources of energy to power their homes and vehicles.

The quest for a more efficient, cleaner and quieter source of energy has also led companies and individuals to explore the option of using electric vehicles. This has led some companies to make electric vehicles in Nigeria and to offer electric vehicle services.

Advantage of electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles are cheaper and easier to maintain and run. There's no need to change the engine oil because there's no engine. There's no need to check the transmission fluid, timing belt or spark plugs. Electric vehicles help you save money in maintenance costs.

Disadvantages of electric vehicles

People often say that electric vehicles cannot be used in Nigeria (and the rest of the developing world) because of certain disadvantages, but most of these issues have been solved and are no longer problems.

1) Cost of battery:

People say that electric vehicles are to expensive to be a practical solution in a developing country like Nigeria. The lithium-ion battery is the most expensive part of an electric vehicle, due to the cost of raw materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and the complex manufacturing process needed to create high-performance batteries.

However, this problem has been solved in 2 ways.

A) Electric vehicles are now being sold without batteries. This makes them very much cheaper. A user can register to rent a battery and he'll only pay a small fee for the rental. He can return to the battery station when the battery is weak, pay a fee, return the weak battery and rent a fully charged battery. This is called the battery swapping system and it is often used in public transportation and logistic systems.

B) People in Nigeria already buy expensive luxury cars and so some electric vehicle makers categorise their vehicles as luxury vehicles and sell them with the batteries included.

2) It takes a long time to charge:

Some people complain that it takes hours to charge electric vehicles. They compare it to petrol vehicles that you can drive into a petrol station, fill your tank and drive off in minutes.

However, this issue has been solved in two ways.

A) The battery swapping system eliminates the need to wait for the battery to charge. You can register for the system, go to the swapping station, pay with your card, put the weak battery in the locker and another locker opens for you to take a fully charged battery. This is easily done in minutes, around the same time it takes to buy petrol at the petrol station.

B) One of the advantages of electric vehicles is that you don't have to go to the charging station to charge them. You can charge them at home. You can plug it at night before you sleep and it'll be fully charged before you wake up. Electric vehicle companies are also introducing faster charging systems and greater range so that it won't take hours before the battery is fully charged.

3) Epileptic public power supply:

Many developing countries suffer from frequent power outages and some people believe that electric vehicles would not be practical because of these outages.

However, electric vehicle charging stations do not depend solely on public power supply. Most of the charging stations are hybrid charging stations and they use a combination solar power and public power supply to charge electric vehicles. Therefore, frequent public power outages is not a problem.

Some electric vehicle makers point to the fact that Nigerians use rechargeable mobile phones without any problems, despite the power supply situation and therefore, they say that Nigerians are also able to use electric vehicles without any problems.

Mustapha Gajibo began converting petrol powered vehicles to electric power in 2017 after Boko Haram blew up the transmission lines that supplied Maiduguri with electricity, yet he was successful because he used solar power rather than public power supply.

4) Charging stations:

Some people say that there aren't enough charging stations.

Electric vehicle makers, universities, governments, private companies and other organisations are building solar charging stations every day and electric vehicles can also be charged at home.

Uses:

Electric vehicles are now being used in Nigeria as personal vehicles, they are used by delivery and logistics companies, they are being used in vehicle sharing programmes and they are being used as taxis.

These are 13 electric vehicle companies that you should know about.
