Julius Sello Malema was the youth leader of the African National Congress (ANC). He is a very radical (aluta) person and he helped Jacob Zuma to oust Thabo Mbeki as president of South Africa.

Julius Malema believes that whites deprived black South Africans of economic benefits during the apartheid era and therefore it is time for black people to take back those economic rights. He believes that black people should control the land, mines and major companies of South Africa. This has made him very popular with some people.

He was a major supporter of President Jacob Zuma, but they fell out because Malema felt that the ANC was not radical enough, while the ANC was embarrassed by some of his comments.

He once told the BBC's Jonah Fisher (a white journalist) who interrupted him during a press conference that the building (ANC building) was a revolutionary building, not a newsroom and that when he says jump, the journalist must jump. He said that the journalist should not come to the revolutionary building with the white tendency of undermining black people. He got security to escort Mr Fisher out of the building.

The ANC expelled Julius Malema from the party in 2012, because of his radical views. He then formed his own political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and they often provide me with great entertainment in the South African Parliament.

The EFF members wear all red in Parliament and they often cause commotion. On one occasion they said that they would not allow President Zuma to speak because he was a criminal. They have been thrown out of Parliament many times and policemen have had to enter the chamber to physically drag them out.

Members of the EFF have also staged several walkouts of Parliament.

In this clip a member of another party called the EFF "anarchists". A member of the EFF asked the Speaker to take action against the person, but the Speaker said that the person has the right to speak during debates (freedom of speech). Therefore, the EFF member then said that the Speaker was an anarchist, but the speaker asked her to withdraw the statement immediately.

Nigerians

Julius Malema has a lot of support among poor South Africans, but he lost some of that support because he supported Nigerians during the xenophobia debate.

Malema said that Nigeria assisted black South Africans during the fight against apartheid, so it is wrong for black South Africans to turn against Nigeria now. He said that the stereotype about Nigerians being drug dealers is wrong and he mentioned many hard working Nigerians and said that black South Africans should emulate them.

This made some South Africans to turn against Julius Malema.

Note: The speech in the video was made in 2018. It was at an election rally and Malema was saying that the Mayor of Port Elizabeth (a South African city) was white. He said that they would still go after some black politicians, but first they must go after the mayor. He said that they must cut the throat of whiteness before going after the black politicians.

The Lagos State Government banned the use, sale and distribution of styrofoam packs in January 2024.

The Abia State Government also banned the use, sale and distribution of styrofoam packs in January 2024.

The Federal Government banned the use of styrofoam packs in its ministries, departments and agencies.

Wharehouses that store styrofoam packs have been shut down by the Lagos State Government and importers and stockists of styrofoam packs have been arrested.

Fastfood outlets like Chicken Republic have stopped using and giving out styrofoam packs.

Summary.

🔴 What they are banning is single-use plastics of less than 40 microns.

🔴 Single use means that you only use it once and then you throw it away.

🔴 Major supermarkets and department stores have stopped giving out free plastic bags. People usually get free plastic bags when they shop, use it once and throw away.

The stores are now selling the bags. So if you have to pay to get the bags, then maybe you'll clean it and use it again next time you shop, instead of throwing it away. This will help to reduce plastic waste.

🔴 Some companies are also operating buy back schemes which will see them buying back and recycling their plastic packages.

You can tell that those that are asking for alternatives did not read the article at all.

The Lagos State Government on Thursday hosted members of the Food and Beverages Recyclers Alliance (FBRA) on a courtesy call, discussing modalities for the commencement of the enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics, insisting that the full enforcement will commence very soon.

Speaking during the meeting held today at the conference room of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab said the State is very strategic and intentional about the Single Use Plastic (SUP) ban.

According to him, the meeting also discussed other issues involving both parties, such as the extended producer responsibilities and what FBRA is doing behind the scenes to work with the government, saying “We commended them for their efforts and we agreed on some other things to solidify the relationship”.

He said sometime in January 2024, the State Government commenced the enforcement of the ban on styrofoam with the commitment to add Single Use Plastics after 12 months. The stakeholder engagement would be a monthly affair for now and would be constituted with massive advocacy and public sensitization before enforcement, adding that all decisions during the stakeholder engagement would help to stimulate positive results once the enforcement commences.

He said unlike styrofoam, SUP is more complicated and the government does not want to make a mistake as it is trying to do what is right for a sustainable environment. But thankfully, the FBRA members agree 100 percent with the government and the present administration is glad they spoke with one voice that they need this ban more than even the government.

The Commissioner emphasised that the Government is not banning pure water but only banning the usage of single-use plastics of less than 40 microns. According to him, “The government is not banning pure water. We shall buy the sachets back and we are working round the buyback. I’m also glad that lots of interventions for recycling and reusing the products (Pure Water Sachets) are in the works, we are planning on signing a MoU with LAFARGE by next week on a particular use from their factory. These are directives we want to push and measures we are being put in place”.

Wahab reiterated that the government is banning SUP this year and working on the modalities to implement it with FBRA adding that most big supermarkets and retail outlets are already implementing it by selling plastic bags at a price to their customers as a means to discourage them from disposing it but rather keep, clean and reuse when next they go shopping.

"I want to make a plea with Lagosians, let us continue to support the government concerning the ban of styrofoam as we move to the next phase which is the ban on the usage of single-use plastics. Lagosians should see it in the context of an issue we are trying to address and they should support the government concerning it. We are also going to be considerate with how we will implement it so that we can clean the system of this waste and move towards the reusing and recycling of the product and save our land fields from things that do not have to go there", he stated.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of FBRA, Ziad Maclouf said the banning of usage on SUPs is a welcome development and long overdue, adding that the association is set to introduce a new system where they can produce alternatives that will be good for the economy and the environment.

He said the association is in total support of the State government initiative and is encouraging its customers to now make use of thick plastic bags, informing that the association is also looking at other ways to enlighten them on how to separate their wastes and make money from it.
