So you won't always keep explaining that their SPY is different from what everyone knows as spy

Why should that make them change the acronym? Do you know how many acronyms and words have multiple meanings? What's the guarantee that any new acronym will not be confused with something else in future? Do you know how many NBCs exist??

Tabitha Chawinga and Barbra Banda have been nominated for the Ballond'Or. This is the third time that an African woman has been nominated, Asisat Oshoala was nominated in 2022 and 2023, but it's the first time that two African women have been nominated at the same time.

Ademola Lookman was nominated in the men's category.

Nigerian Students Association Denies Planned Protest Against Fuel Price Hike, Urges Peaceful Resolution

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has distanced itself from a planned protest scheduled for September 15, 2024 against the recent fuel price hike.

NANS explained that it does not support any actions that could lead to civil unrest or disrupt public order.

The association's leadership stressed its commitment to peaceful and constructive dialogue as the preferred approach to address concerns over fuel prices.

NANS reaffirmed its stance against any form of agitation that might compromise public peace and safety.

This is contained in a statement signed by NANS senate president, Afeez Akinteye on Wednesday, who described the information as a baseless one that does not represent the position of NANS.

The statement reads, “The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has been made aware of rumors and misinformation circulating across various platforms, suggesting that NANS is planning a massive shutdown of major cities across the country.

"We wish to categorically state that NANS has not announced or endorsed any such protest. These reports are entirely baseless and do not reflect the position or intentions of our organisation.”

Akinteye said the umbrella body representing the interests of Nigerian students, has always been committed to peaceful advocacy and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.

It said, "We understand the critical importance of maintaining peace and stability in our nation, especially during these challenging times. Any actions that could lead to civil unrest or the disruption of public order are not, and will never be, supported by NANS.

“We strongly urge the public, the media, and all stakeholders to disregard these false reports. The individuals or groups behind these rumours are faceless entities who seek to exploit the name of NANS for their malicious purposes. They aim to destabilise the country and create unnecessary tension among citizens. We categorically disassociate ourselves from any such plans or intentions.”

The student leader called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the origin of the misinformation.

According to him, those responsible for spreading the ‘falsehood must be identified and held accountable’.

Akinteye explained that the use of the NANS’ name to propagate such unfounded claims is not only a threat to national security but also a grave disservice to the millions of students who genuinely seek positive change through legitimate means.

It said, “Furthermore, we urge security agencies to act decisively in apprehending any individuals or groups attempting to use the name of NANS to incite unrest or disrupt the peace of our nation. We must collectively ensure that the integrity of our democratic processes and the rule of law are upheld at all times.

“NANS remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We will continue to pursue this mission through peaceful, lawful, and constructive channels.

"Let it be known that NANS stands firmly for peace, progress, and the unity of our nation.

“We appreciate the ongoing support of Nigerian students and the public, and we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and not to fall prey to those who seek to manipulate and mislead for their selfish gains.”

Earlier on Wednesday, SaharaReporters reported that NANS had issued a notification of a planned shutdown of all major cities in Nigeria, effective September 15, 2024.

A statement signed by Okunomo Henry Adewumi, who also identified himself as NANS Senate President, noted that the protest is in response to the recent fuel price hike and the perceived incompetence of the NNPCL Director General, Mele Kyari.

The statement also demanded the immediate reversal of the fuel price hike and the removal of Mr. Male Kyari as the NNPC Director General.

NANS is presently beset by internal divisions, with multiple factions vying for influence and authority. Consequently, it is plausible that one of these factions may have issued a call to action, mobilizing students to participate in the protest, while another faction, perhaps with differing ideologies or agendas, opted to dissociate themselves from the movement and actively worked to bring it to a halt.

We are doing all these just to taunt a country thats 10000 miles away from us, a Nation that doesnt even share boundaries with us. We are petty!

Chi-whatever is lucky, She's the only winner in all of these. It looks like a poorly written script that was excellently directed

Good for her
You've not factored in the money that Silverbird made from petty South Africans that voted for Miss Kwara and the money they have made from increased views on their internet site (I don't think I've ever seen South African comments on Silverbird TVs YouTube page before now).

These are not regular policemen. Most of them are drivers and security guards at banks, universities and other such organisations.

3) People don't understand that SPY police means supernumerary police, not undercover police. They don't know the meaning of the term supernumerary police.

This issue has cropped up again.

There was a lot of controversy between 2013 and 2016 because pictures and videos of some people in police uniform doing certain things that policemen were not supposed to do, went viral on social media. I realised that those people were SPY policemen, but many people did not know this and so they insulted the Police Force.

The Inspector General of Police therefore banned SPY policemen from wearing police uniforms and he announced that a special uniform would be designed for them. A Nairaland thread about the new uniforms got to the home page in 2016 and a lot of people wrote that the police was stupid because spies do not wear uniforms.

I had to explain that these were not spies, they were supernumerary policemen. I explained that sometimes when there were not enough policemen, the police could deputise civilians and this enables them to perform some police functions and assist the Police Force. I explained that the word supernumerary meant extra or excess number.

I said that in Nigeria there are some organisations that need extra police services. These organisations include universities, banks, some government agencies, oil companies, etc. These organisations could apply to the police to train some of their employees as supernumerary policemen. These employees usually include security guards and drivers. They attend a special school that has been set up by the police (in Ikeja) and they are trained by policemen.

I can't remember all the rules, but they are not allowed to carry out certain police function, while they can assist the police in other functions. Most of their duties are carried out within the premises of the organisation that they work for, but they can also assist the police outside that organisation.

Since the 2013-2016 controversies, SPY policemen have been banned from wearing regular police uniforms. They must wear the SPY police uniform and those from the rank or ASP above must not wear any uniform at all.

Two women SPY police officers recently posted videos of themselves partying, riding luxury yachts, helicopters and travelling all over Dubai. Among the pictures and videos that they posted are pictures and videos of themselves wearing regular police uniforms and one of them was wearing the uniform of an ASP. As you can expect, lots of people have insulted the police because of those pictures and videos.

The IGP subsequently suspended them, but some people are claiming that the women did nothing wrong and that spies sometimes have to live lavish lives in order to blend in.

grin grin grin

What I read this morning/afternoon reminded me of a very funny thread that was created a few years ago.

The Inspector General of Police announced that a separate uniform was going to be designed for SPY policemen, in order to reduce the problem of mistaken identity. Some Nairalanders went crazy when they saw the thread.

"What is wrong with this country? How can spies have uniforms? Wouldn't it be easy for people to identify them if they wore uniforms?" were the comments all the way through the thread. I had to explain that SPY policemen are supernumerary policemen and I also explained what that meant.

It was announced today that the IGP has banned the use of SPY license plates and ordered policemen to retrieve all such license plates that are being used. He said that civilians that use the SPY plates should not be arrested, but the plates should be retrieved, but policemen and other security agents that use SPY plates should be arrested.

One guy that responded to the tweet claimed that SPY meant "Special Protection, but I don't know what the Y is for".

wtf is that 'spy police' badge? lol. In civilized countries, spouses of spies don't even have an idea that their partners is into such. How would the person be a spy in everyone could see it from their badge?
