For context, this was the state of the Township Stadium during the NAE administration. I am the person captured in this photograph. At the time, the spectator stand had effectively degenerated into a smoking enclave for touts and miscreants. To gain access to the facility for a football match, we had to negotiate with self-appointed gatekeepers who had practically annexed the premises. The deplorable condition of the playing surface is evident from the photograph alone. The backyard of that stand has been turned into public toilet and a hatching yard for all sort of poisonous animals.

Give credit where it is due. @ubasanius has consistently demonstrated a commitment to the rehabilitation and development of state-of-the-art public infrastructure since assuming office. You can interrogate his government without rewriting history. In fact, you can do better than this.

I was born and grew up not far from this location that one Pooja from Gbagada would come with his empty head and lie about.

Ranchers Bees Football Club of Kaduna was one of the popular teams in the top division of the Nigerian league in the 1980s. They were previously known as DIC Bees because they were owned by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) before they were taken over by the Kaduna State Government.

The government recently sold the team to Honourable Bello Mohammed El-Rufai (a member of the House of Representatives and son of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai) and Sadiq Umar (a former Super Eagles player).

Ranchers Bees Stadium is the home of Ranchers Bees FC and it is solely a football stadium. The Kaduna State Government has been renovating the stadium and they announced that it will soon be ready for use.

(Sadiq Umar had previously planned to renovate it but the government renovated it before he could do so).

However, the announcement caused controversy because supporters of Governor Uba Sani say that the stadium was taken over by thugs, criminals and smokers before the renovation, while supporters of former governor Nasir El-Rufai say that the stadium was being used as intended before the renovation.

Ranchers Bees Stadium is now officially called the Kaduna Township Stadium since the club was sold but the government retains ownership of the stadium (but most people still refer to it as Ranchers Bees Stadium).

Types of stadiums in Nigeria.

Anybody that has lived in Nigeria automatically knows the various types of stadiums in Nigeria (that's why I said that those people are not being serious). In this post I will limit myself to the relevant types.

A) Sports cities: There are many stadiums in Nigeria that are what I call sports cities. They have a main bowl that consists of a football pitch and an athletics track and they also have other sports facilities, most notably a sports hall that is used for basketball and other indoor sports and an aquatic centre.

Some people complain about these sports cities because they do not understand why there's a track around the football pitch. They watch the English Premier League and other European football competitions and they don't see athletics tracks around the pitches and so they wonder why there are tracks around the pitches at these sports cities.

This issue isn't new to me, but I assumed that everybody understood it, however, I discovered on Nairaland in the early 2010s that not everybody understands the issue.

The answer is very simple. These sports cities were built by government. Governments want to develop multiple sports in order to improve the chances of their citizens winning medals at multi-sports events. They need to have the facilities in which to train these athletes. Some governments also hope to host events like the Nations Sports Festival, the National School Sports Festival, Youth Games, All Africa Games, Commonwealth Games, the Olympics, etc. It is more cost effective and efficient to build a sports city than to build separate football stadiums and athletics stadiums. This is the reason that governments build the sports cities. Track and Field Athletics was once Nigeria's second sport, it is the one sport that every school takes part in and there must be facilities to host such competitions.

The football stadiums that you see being used in the English Premiership and similar competitions are owned by wealthy football clubs. They have no responsibility to develop track and field athletics and they want to ensure that their fans can get very close to the action by having the seats/stands very close to the pitch.

Examples of sports cities include the National Stadium Lagos, the National Stadium Abuja, Liberty Stadium Ibadan, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Enugu and the Ahmadu Bello Stadium Kaduna.

B) Single use stadiums: There are also single use stadiums in Nigeria. When I say "single use" I mean that the stadium comprises just a football pitch, although that same pitch can be used for association football, rugby and American football.

Most of the single use stadiums are the older stadiums like the Onikan Stadium in Lagos, Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt and the Kano Pillars Stadium. Most of these stadia are associated with a particular football club and it is not the club's responsibility to develop other sports like track and field athletics or swimming. Besides, most of these older stadia are smaller than the sports cities and there's no space to put an athletics track.

C) Mini stadiums: Mini stadiums are very small stadiums that are designed to be used by a community. Most of these stadiums are not used by any professional sports team, rather they are used by the youths in the area.

Mini stadiums are built to provide an outlet for youths in the area, so that they can hone their skills, to provide them with something to do and keep them away from crimes and other vices.

Mini stadiums also serve as a community centre. They are a place where schools can hold their inter-house sports competitions, nearby companies can have bonding sessions, etc.

A great example of a mini stadium is the Campos Square Mini Stadium. It was basically just a playground once upon a time. There were no stands and there was no grass (it was just sand). People played football there, it was used as a prayerground during Eid and some people had parties there. In 1987 a part of the square was partitioned off and converted into a school.

However, Governor Babatunde Fashola converted it into a mini stadium with stands, an electronic scoreboard and an outdoor basketball court.

Nowadays there are activities at the stadium every day. It is used by the Lagos State Government to train primary and secondary school students, teams of youths rent the stadium for their football matches and it was the site of the Channels Television primary school football competition.

D) Playgrounds: What I call playgrounds are community sports facilities that have no stands, in some cases they have no grass, but they are used by youths in the area to play football in the evenings and at weekends. They are also used for social occasions like parties and for political gatherings. A good example of a playground is the old Campos Square.

Gov. SanwoOlu visited the Teslim Balogun Stadium last month & I think if he recommissions the stadium before he hands over power, he will tick the box of leaving Lagos with a FIFA standard stadium.

The work is slow but if he leaves us with that, Lagosians won't forget him.

As Lagos gets ready to host the inaugural National Intermediate Sports Festival, I took time today to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation at Teslim Balogun Stadium and other sports facilities. I am pleased with the progress so far.

The natural grass pitch is complete, while work on the new tartan track will be finished in the coming weeks. Our indoor halls, swimming pools and other facilities are also being upgraded to receive the thousands of young athletes expected from across the country.

For the past three years, we have been rebuilding sports centres across Surulere, Ikorodu, Epe, Agege and Badagry, because our young people deserve quality facilities close to home. We want them to discover their talents, compete with confidence and see a future for themselves in sports right here in Nigeria.

Lagos is ready and we look forward to welcoming the next generation of Nigerian athletes.

This is what the stadium looked like before the renovation.

The UAC Stadium in Surulere was the venue of many epic Principals Cup finals and Ramat Cup competitions in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The Principals Cup was the competition between teams of male secondary schools in Lagos. It was a big deal in the 1970s and early 1980s. Matches were broadcast live on Radio Nigeria and teams seemed to represent more than their schools, they represented the communities that the schools were in. The CMS Grammar School team (Bariga Bombers) were like the national team of Bariga, the St Finbarr's team were the national team of Akoka, the St Gregory's team was the national team of Obalende, etc.

The Ramat Cup (which was named after General Murtala Ramat Muhammad) was organised by the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) and it was used to discover players for the national under 21 and under 16 teams.

UAC Stadium was demolished in the mid-1980s and a new and bigger stadium was to be built on the site. It was to be called the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Construction of the Teslim Balogun Stadium began in 1987, during the administration of Governor Mike Akhigbe. However, the project stalled soon after due to the economic crisis of the 1980s. It was abandoned for decades.

The project was revived by the administration of Governor Bola Tinubu. It was completed and commissioned in 2007, just before Tinubu handed over to Fashola.
A lot of the facilities and design of the stadium are outdated. What is happening right now is an upgrade to bring it into the modern era.

For example, only the State Box was covered originally. Now they are converting it into an all-covered stadium.

There were no hospitality suites. Now hospitality suites are being created.

It had no facade, but now a facade is being put in place.

The flood lights were on poles that were outside the stadium, now they will be on the roof.


Basically it was a 1987 type stadium and it is being converted into a 2026 type stadium.

However critics have complained about the slow pace of work. The project started in 2024 and it has still not been completed.

The government says that it will soon be completed and that it will host the Intermediate Games this month (September 2026). Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inspected the site a few weeks ago and he has promised that it will be completed on time.

Petrol price was 15 kobo when Shagari reduced subsidy and made it go up to 20k.

We need to go back to the first time someone tried to remove or reduce subsidy.
