Everlastingson: Keep quiet and stop this deception. There was a destructive flooding in Dubai not long ago. Did you hear they went about destroying houses and blaming the same victims whom they( govt) gave approval to build the houses in the first place? This subterfuge won't sway sane, reasonable, and objective persons.
JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH!
Is this your attempt to make sense? Do you have any idea what encroachment on a canal means?
This is not about making noise o! You have to at least make sense.
Everlastingson: Stop defending evil. Sanwolu has done nothing other than destroying Igbo owned houses and properties in Lagos since after the 2023 Elections for the simple racist reason that the Igbo didn't vote for him. In this harsh Tinubu economy all you could think of is destroying people's livelihood. Your reward awaits you.
I state facts, I don't defend anything and you haven't been able to state any facts to counter what I posted. All you did was to post a wild rant that means nothing. Therefore I'll take it to mean that you have no facts to post.
Some residents of Mende Villa Estate posted documents to show that they had approval, but the documents showed that they had conditional approval (the condition was that they should not encroach on the right of way of the canal).

Gullible Nigerian. See attached approval documents issued to Mendevilla Estate
Issues have existed since 2021. @yemialadee, Let’s use our platforms to educate people on dangers of building on Canal paths, this is better for our environment and for a better Lagos of the future.

Yes, the developer is in the wrong, but why was this not checked in the very beginning when the architectural plan was shared ?when it was time to demolish , why were the tenants not directly informed. Most residents own these homes.
Jubril A. Gawat @Mr_JAGs
There is a history to this issue, Everybody (Landlord & Tenants) were informed from 2021, informed again in 2022, 2023 and 2024. We also had a major flood issue that people died in 2021 too. Their Stakeholders came to the Ministry with their Assembly member. It was part of their request to get Governor’s attention, Mr Governor approved the reduction of the 140m to 100m. Try to get more information on the subject matter pls.
On 21st of December, 2023, the leadership of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources held ANOTHER stakeholder meeting with Honourable member representing Kosofe 1 State Constituency at @lshaofficial, Hon. Sanni Ganiyu, and the property owners of structures built on the alignment of System 1 midstream (Odo Iyalaro - Mende - Ojota - Ogudu reach) following several other meetings held previously.
Here (video attached), the property owners confirmed that they do not have valid documents and have been served several contravention notices.
The Ministry have always engaged stakeholders and give notices before any action is taken.
Floods: Lagos To Demolish Marked Structures In Mende, Aboru
The Lagos State Government has threatened to demolish some marked structures on drainage alignments and setbacks in Mende, Maryland; and Aboru in the Alimosho area of the state where floods have wreaked havoc of late.
The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, in a statement on Tuesday, said it is regrettable that after several of such warnings, the residents of the areas have refused to move but would rather resort to cheap blackmail of having nowhere to relocate to.
Bello, who spoke against the background of a viral video of some people being rescued in Mende, emphasised that the area is a lowlying flood plain.
In the statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, the Commissioner advised residents of the areas to relocate forthwith.
“While pleading for calm from all residents, he stated that the drainages have the capacity to contain water runoff when the rain stops just as it is happening already.
“Bello said the heavy torrential rainfall which started in the early hours of Monday and still continued on Tuesday afternoon has caused flash floods in many areas.
“He reiterated his assurance that a minimum of four hours after the rainfall ceases, the water level in the lagoon will go down, allowing water from major collectors to flow into it and enabling all flood water that may have inundated our roads and streets to leave the streets,” the statement added.
There were major incidents of flooding in the Mende and Aboru areas in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and the Lagos State Government subsequently issued contravention orders to owners of properties that had encroached on the right of way of the System 1 Canal, a canal that is a very important drain on the Mainland.
Contravention notices were issued in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Late in 2023 the residents, accompanied by the representative at the Lagos House of Assembly went to see the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources. The Special Adviser to the Governor on the Environment was also at the meeting.
At that meeting the residents admitted that they had been served contravention notices since 2021.
However, a singer, Yemi Alade, recently said that the residents were only given 2 hours notice before their properties were demolished. This thread documents all the events, beginning from the floods.

Lagos Fire Rescues Nine from a Sinking Building
Nine trapped victims have been rescued from a sinking building at 45, Akinyemi Street, Akinwunmi Estate, Mende, Maryland Lagos
The alert which was received from a sister agency, NEMA at 10:00 hours Monday, was quickly followed by the deployment of the Ikeja Fire Station.
On arrival at the scene, it was discovered that nine female adults were trapped in a storey building which is sinking given the terrain of the environment and coupled with the overnight heavy rain downpour leading to flooding.
The Firefighters swiftly swung into action, rescuing all nine alive without any form of injury with the compliments of other emergency responders at the scene.
The rescued victims are all in stable condition while search and rescue operations have been concluded with the evacuation of all at risk. It should, however be noted that rights to personal safety lie with huge sense of responsibility which requires every sense of responsibility
which requires evacuating unsafe areas including floods, defective structures and hazardous vicinity.

FLASH: The Lagos State Government on Sunday stated that it would undertake enforcement action to remove over 100 shanties housing several people at Adeniji Adele Underbridge from tomorrow.
The Operatives of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI/LAGESC) and officials from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance (MEC) department of the ministry will be given security back up to conduct the operation.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tokunbo Wahab has advised all the occupants of the shanties in their own interest to voluntarily move out with their belongings before the commencement of the enforcement operations on Monday.
This will be a Major Environmental and Security Operation.
The Lagos State Government will undertake enforcement action to remove over 100 shanties at Adeniji Adele underbridge from tomorrow, Monday, 6th of May, 2024.
The removal is coming after the expiration of a 48-hour removal notice served on all occupants of the shanties to move with their belongings. And operatives of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI/LAGESC) and officials from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance (MEC) department of the ministry will be given security backup to conduct the operation.
This exercise is part of the avowed commitment of the present administration under Mr @jidesanwoolu to reclaim all ungoverned spaces that dot the Lagos landscape. Unsightly shanties which are located in the heart of Lagos Island represent a distorted image of what a smart city like Lagos should be.
Apart from the unsanitary conditions of residents in the shanties, it also serves as a hiding place for criminals and points for peddling hard drugs and substances which is injurious to the wellbeing of law-abiding residents.
Therefore, I advise all the occupants of the shanties in their interest, to voluntarily move out with their belongings before the commencement of the enforcement operations on Monday.
