The Invictus Games is a multi-sports competition that was founded by Prince Harry of Sussex and first held in 2014. It is for injured and sick military personnel, both serving and retired.

This year participants are going to compete in Archery, Athletics, Cycling, Indoor rowing, Powerlifting, Sitting volleyball, Swimming, Table tennis, Wheelchair basketball and Wheelchair rugby.

Nigeria is the first African country to be invited to the competition.

The event is held every two years.

We're also really excited to have new nations join us. Let's hear it for Colombia, Israel and Nigeria.

They're having a terrible time.

Now I'm not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered that she is of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year.

Tinubu Heads For Abu Dhabi To Resolve Diplomatic Row With UAE

President Bola Tinubu will meet with the leadership of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to resolve the diplomatic dispute with Nigeria.

The UAE authorities had in October 2022 slammed visa ban on Nigerians, coming shortly after the Emirates also suspended flights.

Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, which was also operating to Dubai similarly suspended its flight as the UAE stopped issuance of visa to prospective travelers.

Emirates had suspended its flight to Nigeria over its inability to repatriate trapped funds.

When he hosted Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Nigeria at Aso Rock last month, the President had directed that issues affecting relations with the Emirates Airline, and issuance of visas to Nigerians should be “immediately’’ resolved, emphasizing that he stands prepared to “personally’’ intervene.

“We are a family with the UAE, we only live in separate rooms, but we are in the same house. We should look at the issues as a family problem, and resolve it amicably. As you know in every family, there are peculiarities. You can have an erring son, or daughter, but we must work together. We need to agree on core aviation and immigration issues,” the President had said.

On Sunday, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Presidential spokesman, announced that Tinubu would meet UAE authorities over the issue.

“President Bola Tinubu will meet with the leadership of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during a technical stopover in Abu Dhabi, UAE, after the President’s departure from New Delhi, India.”

“The meeting will serve as a follow-up discussion to address specific, salient issues within the bilateral relationship after conversations held during a recent visit by the UAE Ambassador to the President at the State House in Abuja.

“The President is maximizing the opportunity of the stopover to equally advance his investment promotion objectives with high-level authorities in the public and private sectors of the United Arab Emirates.

“Following a successful investment drive on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit, active participation in the G-20 Summit, and a productive stopover in the UAE, the President is expected to return to Abuja immediately following the bilateral engagement.”

The name Badamosi is not a strange name, even though it often caused controversy in the 1980s (one of my older relatives used to insist that President Babangida was from Ogbomosho). President Ibrahim Babangida is not the only person I know that has that name.

The late Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Maccido, had a son called Badamosi Maccido. That son was a member of the National Assembly, but unfortunately he died with the Sultan in the 2006 plane crash.

There are many other people that bear the name Badamosi. I remember that President Babangida was asked about the name in a TV interview, but I can no longer remember his explanation about the meaning of the name.

I gave this explanation on another thread many years ago (I'll try and recreate it from memory).

President Babangida is not the first military president. We've had President Augusto Pinochet of Chile, President Fidel Castro of Cuba (this is for those that mentioned communism. Castro was a communist and he had the title of president), President Idi Amin of Uganda, etc.

A kingdom is ruled by a king or queen.
A principality by a prince
A dukedom by a duke.
An empire by an emperor or empress
A republic is headed by a president.

Nigeria is a federal republic.

It's much easier to find old newspaper interviews than it is to find TV interviews. I found the interview by the aide in seconds, but I can't find the TV interview that Babangida gave.

According to Major Debo Bashorun:

"The coup itself was not a nationalistic one. He was trying to protect his interests by protecting Aliyu Mohammed who later became Chief of Army Staff, among other things......I drafted his first broadcast speech, and contrary to what has been said in some quarters, I believed the idea of calling himself President came to him on our way to NTA. It was unexpected. He altered the word Head of State to president in the car. We even forgot the Coat of Arms needed in the background at NTA. I had to go back to Dodan Barracks to bring it. With us at NTA that morning were Halilu Akilu, John Shagaya and Joshua Dogonyaro" (The News, January 24, 1994)

Babangida had the title president from the very first day he was in office. I watched an old TV interview he gave and read an interview that one of his aides gave and they both said that it was not planned but came on the day that he made his first TV broadcast as president. (I also remember that they both said that they forgot the coat of arms that was supposed to be the backdrop and someone had to go back and get it).

His aide said that the title head of state was written in the speech, but Babangida changed it to president. The interviewer asked Babangida why he adopted the title president and he said that there was no deeper reason, that it was just on the spur of the moment.
