MEDITATION OF THE DAY(Luke 11:14-23) THEME: WHAT IS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF CHRIST JESUS In today’s Gospel reading Jesus performs a healing miracle which gains him opposition rather then adulation. In restoring the gift of speech to a mute man He discovers that “demons” which control a person’s extremities are far easier to exorcise then the demons that lodge themselves in the depths of the human heart. We have the arrogant human nature to analyze and apply everything to a science or understanding, rather than just believe and have faith in God. The people who witness the healing miracle accuse Jesus of healing in the name of Beelzebul. But Jesus can see that it is really they who are possessed by cynicism and doubt and he proceeds to confront them with their own irrational arguments.. They are caught in their own desperate situations and cannot allow themselves to trust that Jesus is from God. Their discomfort in the presence of Jesus reminds us that there is a bit of the “beast” in us all. There are also those of us, that want God to prove Himself to us, by way of some outrageous sign, rather than having faith and trust. PRAYER:Lord, grant me your Holy Spirit that I may discern what will lead me to you and what leads me away from you. |

THEME:HOW DO I SEE AND LIVE THE LAW OF GOD Why do people tend to view the “law of God” negatively rather than positively? Jesus’ attitude towards the law of God can be summed up in the great prayer of Psalm 119: “Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.” For the people of Israel the “law” could refer to the ten commandments or to the five Books of Moses, called the Pentateuch, which explain the commandments and ordinances of God for his people. The “law” also referred to the whole teaching or way of life which God gave to his people. The Jews in Jesus’ time also used it as a description of the oral or scribal law. Needless to say, the scribes added many more things to the law than God intended. That is why Jesus often condemned the scribal law. It placed burdens on people which God had not intended. Jesus, however, made it very clear that the essence of God’s law — his commandments and way of life, must be fulfilled. The law of God is truth and when we live according to that truth it produces the fruits of righteousness, holiness, peace, and joy. Jesus taught reverence for God’s law — reverence for God himself, for the Lord’s Day, reverence or respect for parents, respect for life, for property, for another person’s good name, respect for oneself and for one’s neighbor lest wrong or hurtful desires master us. Reverence and respect for God’s commandments teach us the way of love -- love of God and love of neighbor. What is impossible to men is possible to God and those who have faith in God. God gives us the grace to love as he loves, to forgive as he forgives, to think as he thinks, and to act as he acts. The Lord loves righteousness and hates wickedness. As his followers we must love his commandments and hate every form of sin. Do you love the commands of the Lord? Do u see it as a growing horizon of light or as an imposition which limits my freedom? PRAYER: Lord Jesus, grant this day, to direct and sanctify, to rule and govern our hearts and bodies, so that all our thoughts, words and deeds may be according to your Father’s law and thus may we be saved and protected through your mighty help. |

THEME:UNFORGIVING SPIRIT How does mercy and justice go together? The prophet Amos speaks of God forgiving transgression three times, but warns that God may not revoke punishment for the fourth (see Amos 1:3-13; 2:1-6). When Peter posed the question of forgiveness, he characteristically offered an answer he thought Jesus would be pleased with. Why not forgive seven times! How unthinkable for Jesus to counter with the proposition that one must forgive seventy times that. Jesus made it clear that there is no reckonable limit to forgiveness. And he drove the lesson home with a parable about two very different kinds of debts. The first man owed an enormous sum of money -- millions in our currency. In Jesus' time this amount was greater than the total revenue of a state -- more than it would cost to ransom a king! The man who was forgiven such an incredible debt could not, however bring himself to forgive his neighbor a very small debt which was about one-hundred-thousandth of his own debt. The contrast could not have been greater! No offence our neighbor can do to us can compare with our debt to God! We have been forgiven a debt which is beyond all paying; to ransom our debt of sin God gave up his only begotten Son. If God has forgiven each of us our debt, which was very great, we, too must forgive others the debt they owe us. Jesus teaches that one must forgive in order to be forgiven. If we do not forgive our fellow man we cannot expect God to forgive us. James says that judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy (James 2:13). Mercy is truly a gift and it is offered in such a way that justice is not neglected. If we want mercy shown to us we must be ready to forgive others as God has forgiven us. Do you hold any grudge or resentment towards anyone? PRAYER:Lord, you have been kind and forgiving towards me. May I be merciful as you are merciful. Free me from all bitterness and resentment that I may truly forgive from the heart those who have caused me injury or grief. |
THEME:EVEN JESUS HIMSELF WAS NOT ACCEPTED!!! People will get angry with us when we say what is true, this is what happened to Jesus. His townsfolk were not only angry with Him they even cooked-up a scheme to kill Him. But Jesus just shrugged it off He walked away without any hatred towards His townsfolk to continue His mission. In our lives there will be those who will maltreat us, who will try to take us down to their level. We must not let them succeed by retaliating. Instead we should emulate Jesus. He did not strike back He simply walked away from them all and continued His salvific mission. When we don’t retaliate to those who’ve hurt us it doesn’t mean that we are cowards. It rather shows that we occupy a higher moral and spiritual ground than them. PRAYER:Lord give us the grace to reorganize your presence in our lives |

THEME:REVERENCE FOR GOD'S HOUSE God's temple was being misuse by people who had turned it into marketplace. They had forgotten,or didn't care that God's house is a place of worship, not for making profit. Our attitude toward the church is wrong if we see it as a place of personal contacts or business advantage.Jesus was obviously angry for that. Jesus took the evil acts in the temple as an insult against God,and thus he deal with them halfheartedly. He was consumed with righteous anger against such flagrant disrespect for God. Make sure you attend church to worship God. PRAYER:God give us the grace to keep our faith firm even when it isn't popular to follow Christ. |

THEME:REPENTANCE AND FORGIVENESS This Gospel reading is the familiar story of the prodigal son and 'prodigal' father. While the son is prodigal material-wise,the father is prodigal in mercy. The father forgive because is filled with love and mercy. Like the father in this story,God waits patiently for us to come back to our senses. God's great love reaches out and finds us sinners no matter why or how we got lost. The elder brother finds it difficult in accepting his younger brother when he returned, because of resentments. How easy it is to resent God gracious forgiveness of others whom we consider to be far worse sinners than ourselves. Don't let anything keep you from forgiving others who has hurt you, with that your joy will grow. And you will experience God's forgiveness in your life. PRAYER:Grant to us O Lord, true repentance from our sins. Amen |

THEME:BE FAITHFUL TO GOD'S LOVE OF YOU In the reading of today,we are shown the devious nature of a man,and our love of wickedness. One would expect the land owner to have wiped away the wicked servants at the second instance, but he rather kept faith with them and sent some more servants. It is in this same way that God has kept faith with us and loved us amidst our unfaithfulness. How are we responding to many invitations of God calling us to repentance? PRAYER:Lord, make us faithful servants in your vineyard. Amen |

THEME:BE GENEROUS WITH YOUR GIFTS AND TALENTS The rich man in today's gospel reading(Luke 16:19-31) is punished not because of his God-given wealth, but for lack of sensitivity to the need and plight of the poor Lazarus. A look at our world today shows stark poverty amidst of affluence. I am sure that if Christ were to come today many people will suffer the same fate as that of the rich man. You do not need to be a Bill Gates before you can wipe away tears from the eyes of your neighbour. |
