Cocoa Estate: Ukweni demands sincerity from C'River's government

A Calabar-based human rights lawyer, Mba Ukweni (SAN), has demanded sincerity from the Cross River Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Mr Ededem Ani, on the cocoa estate dispute.

Ukweni, who stated this on Modnay while fielding questions from newsmen in Calabar, said that the statement credited to the Commissioner shows he was not willing to obey the recent court pronouncement on the matter.

The legal luminary, therefore, issued a seven days ultimatum to the Commissioner to retract the statement.

The Attorney General had on March 12, 2026, described the constitution of an enforcement committee by Ukweni as illegal.

Contained in a public notice titled, "Re:Constitution of Illegal Taskforce by Mba Ukweni (SAN)," the Commissioner averred that Ukweni had no power to inaugurate the taskforce committee to enforce
a court order in respect of Etung cocoa estate.

Ukweniaw firm had inaugurated a taskforce to enforce a court order regarding the government-owned cocoa estate in Etung local government area of Cross River.

Ukweni explained that the taskforce which he Inaugurated was for farmers with like minds called "Team Obey Court Order" was to protect themselves from violent individuals who used to attack them in their farms.

He cited a case where one of the allottees was killed while working in the farm he rented from government-owned cocoa rstate, wondering why the killers were yet to be prosecuted.

He emphasized that the cocoa farmers were inaugurated to work as a team so as to scare their killers from launching attacks.

"The court had earlier restrained the Attorney General from evicting allottees from their farms, as they had legitimately paid money into the state government's coffers," Ukweni said.

He warned that if the Commissioner who happened to be a party in the case does not meet the two conditions which include, retracting the statement with an apology, "there will be no basis for any discussion, we will react,"

Ukweni further stated, "If we react, whoever is bruised by our reaction, the blame should be on him, because he knows what to do.

"He is a party in that case, and having acknowledged that there is was an order of court, which he is fought severally to upturn, he has a duty to obey," Ukweni explained.

The senior lawyer stressed that his law firm is ready to take necessary actions to protect their clients' interests and uphold the rule of law.

Effort to get the Attorney General to react to the failed as his telephone line is said to be unavailable.

54 councilors in C'River North adopts Agom-Jarigbe, Tinubu

The reelection of President Bola Tinubu, Governor Bassey Otu and Senator Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe got a boost with their adoption by the entire 54 councilors in Cross River north senatorial district.

Their adoption was carried out in Ogoja during a visit of the councilors to Senator representing the district in the National Assembly (NASS).

According to the councilors, their adoption was sequel to their performances as president, governor, and senator, respectively.

Moving the motion, Lawrence Ishibi of Angiaba/Begiaka ward of Obudu local government area, particularly commended Agom-Jarigbe for his effective representation.

While describing him as a "worthy representation," Ishibi said Agom-Jarigbe's performance was visible to all in the senatorial district.

"You have indeed served us well. Every street of Cross River North has a footprint of your projects. When we don't see you, we see your signature projects.

"We went you to continue in that manner. That is why we are adopting you for reelection," he stated.

In a similar manner, Acha Oko of Otukpuru ward in Bekwarra local government, who seconded the motion, described Agom-Jarigbe as a worthy son of the senatorial district.

Similarly, like Agom-Jarigbe, the immediate past governor of the State, Prof. Ben Ayade, from Obudu local government, is also seeking election to the senate.

Ayade first got elected into the NASS to represent Cross River North's senatorial district in 2011 while he was elected governor in 2015, where he served to terms.

His bid to return to the Senate in 2023 was not successful as Agom-Jarigbe won the election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, Agom-Jarigbe defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the protracted crisis in the PDP.
Politics › Ex-rep Member Dumps PDP For ADC Amid Party Crisis by natdandav(op): 5:34am On Mar 20
Ex-Rep member dumps PDP for ADC amid party crisis

Mr Eta Mbora, an ex-member of the House of Representatives in the 9th assembly, on Thursday in Calabar, joined the growing list of former federal lawmakers in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Mbora, who represented Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, cited the crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the reason for his action.

He explained that the prolonged internal crisis rocking the PDP had continued to weaken the party.

The former lawmaker said although the move was difficult, “but it becomes necessary in the light of recent developments.

“I am grateful to the PDP for the opportunities it gave me to serve at the local government, state, and national levels.”

The former lawmaker also expressed appreciation to his supporters and associates for their loyalty over the years.

Mbora called on his followers and well-wishers to join him in the ADC and take part in the party’s ongoing registration and revalidation exercise across their wards.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that defection is gradually reshaping the state’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.

Reports from the ex-lawmaker’s new party reveal that arrangements are already in place to host a reception rally in honour of Mbora and other defectors into the party.

His defection comes amid shifting political alignments in Cross River, following the recent moves by former Gov. Liyel Imoke and former Sen. Gershom Bassey to the ADC. (NAN)

Agriculture › How LIFE-ND Is Transforming Rural Livelihoods In Edo by natdandav(op): 8:56am On Mar 17
How LIFE-ND is transforming rural livelihoods in Edo

By Ehigimetor Igbaugba, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Edo is emerging as a model for empowering rural women and youths through the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises in the Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project.

The initiative, supported by the Federal Government, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), focuses on sustainable agriculture and rural enterprise development.

Across the Niger Delta, youth unemployment and declining agricultural productivity have continued to threaten rural livelihoods.

Consequently, development partners and governments are investing in programmes that promote agribusiness and climate-resilient farming.

LIFE-ND is one of such intervention designed to improve income, food security and employment opportunities for rural youths and women.

The project became effective on Feb. 21, 2019, while the state formally joined the initiative on July 1, 2020.

It is currently being implemented in nine Niger Delta states.

IFAD funds activities in Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Ondo, while NDDC supports implementation in Akwa Ibom, Imo and Rivers.

Overall, the project targets 38,250 beneficiaries engaged in agricultural value chains such as rice, cassava, poultry and fisheries.

In Edo, the project has recorded notable progress, especially in youth training and agribusiness incubation.

During the first phase, the programme supported 4,387 direct beneficiaries involved in production, processing and marketing activities.

Central to the initiative is the incubation model, which pairs trainees with experienced agribusiness farmers who serve as mentors.

Under this arrangement, young farmers, including persons with disabilities, receive hands-on training and business support.

Mr John Omoruyi, Edo State Project Coordinator, said the successes recorded in the first phase encouraged the state government to expand the programme.

According to him, Gov. Monday Okpebholo approved farmland across several local governments to support cluster farming.

He added that the state government also appropriated N1.6 billion in the 2025 budget to extend the project to eight additional local governments.

Omoruyi said that within 100 days of the present administration, more than N500 million had been disbursed to support 1,797 youths and women.

He noted that the expansion could generate an additional 2,000 jobs once counterpart funding is fully released.

Similarly, Gov. Okpebholo said agriculture remains central to his administration’s strategy for economic growth and job creation.

According to him, expanding agricultural opportunities will help ensure food security while productively engaging youths and women.

He added that large-scale farming initiatives and farm settlements are being promoted across the state’s three senatorial districts.

Mr Jerry Uwangue, Edo Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, described LIFE-ND as a major step toward improving rural livelihoods.

He said the state government was also collaborating with partners on the proposed LIFE-ND Plus initiative to expand the programme’s impact.

On her part, IFAD Country Director, Mrs Dede Ekoue, described the project as a transformative initiative for young Nigerians.

“From our field visits, LIFE-ND stands as a testimony of how targeted investments in youths and women can transform rural communities,” she said.

Ekoue reaffirmed IFAD’s commitment to scaling up the programme through additional financing.

Also speaking, Mrs Stella Manureh of the NDDC said the project contributes greatly to economic stability in the Niger Delta.

According to her, empowering rural youths through agribusiness can reduce poverty and stimulate regional development.

Beyond training and financial support, the project has also invested in rural infrastructure.

Omoruyi disclosed that more than 28 facilities, including processing centres and farm clusters, had been constructed across Edo communities.

For many beneficiaries, the project has translated into tangible improvements in their livelihoods.

Mrs Grace Nwaozuzu, a poultry farmer and project incubator, said the programme helped her establish and expand her business.

Nwaozuzu, who joined the project in 2022, now raises between 250 and 350 day-old chicks every production cycle.

According to her, the business generates between N180,000 and N200,000 profit after production costs.

“With the income, my husband and I were able to buy a small car used for distributing our products to customers,” she said.

She added that the enterprise also enabled her family to meet educational and household expenses.

Similarly, Mrs Efe Ehanire, a fish processor from Uteh community, said the project introduced modern fish processing technology.

She explained that the hybrid gas kiln provided by the project replaced traditional charcoal and firewood methods.

Ehanire said the facility is now used by more than 30 women in the community to process and package fish for sale.

“We now earn more income and contribute meaningfully to our households,” she said.

However, in spite of the progress recorded, stakeholders say the programme still faces several challenges.

Dr Abiodun Sanni, National Coordinator of LIFE-ND, identified access to finance, market linkages and climate resilience as key concerns.

He noted that climate variability continues to affect agricultural productivity across several participating states.

Nevertheless, he said the project had exceeded its initial targets, reaching more than 26,400 beneficiaries in the first phase.

Sanni added that periodic supervision missions were conducted to review implementation progress and identify areas for improvement.

He expressed optimism that lessons learned would strengthen the programme’s sustainability.

Observers say initiatives like LIFE-ND demonstrate the potential of targeted investments in agriculture to transform rural economies.

If sustained and expanded, such interventions could play a major role in reducing youth unemployment and improving food security in the Niger Delta.

Indeed, for many beneficiaries, the project represents not just an intervention, but a pathway to economic independence and community development. (NANFeatures)
Properties › Institute Demands Passage Of National Building Code To Curb Building Collapse by natdandav(op): 4:07pm On Mar 15
Institute demands passage of national building code to curb building collapse

The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) says only passage of the National Building Code (NBC) by the National Assembly (NASS) will address the constant incidences of building collapse in the country.

Dr Peter Ojeka, Cross River chapter chairman of the NIOB, stated this during a press conference in Calabar on Saturday to mark this year's Builders Day.

While noting that every March 13th is dedicated for Builders Day, he explained that the decision to address the media was to seek their partnership to curb incidences of building collapse.

Ojeka asserted that media support could help accelerate the passage of the NBC that has reached advance stage at the NASS, as well as help in the advocacy program of the institute.

According to him, "NBC of Nigeria is a comprehensive regulatory framework established to set minimum standards for building design, construction, and maintenance to ensure safety, health, and sustainability.

"Developed to curb building collapses and structural failures. It governs all building types—residential, commercial; and industrial - covering phases from planning approval to post-construction certification."

The Cross River chapter chairman emphasised that while a builder manages the whole process of a building, others; civil engineering, quantity surveyor, and architect, are just part of the processes.

He, however, regretted that what you find obtainable in the country today is that a builder that is meant to oversee the entire process have been cut-off.

He explained that approval of a building plan is the job of a builder and not the current practice where a town planner makes such approval.

"This is why this year's celebration is aimed to promote sustainable construction practices, climate-resilient infrastructure, and policy reforms in the built environment.

"The chapter carried this year's sensitization to ministries, secondary and tertiary schools, and construction sites.

The institute, however, noted the dearth of builders in Cross River and some other parts of the country.

Ojeka said to reverse this trend, the NIOB is calling in tertiary institutions that are yet to do so to establish departments of building as courses.

The 2026 Builders Day has as it theme: "Advocacy and Policy Influence Towards Sustainable Reforms for a Resilient Built Environment."

The Builders Day was instituted to commemorate the victims of the Ita-Faaji building collapse in Lagos in 2019.
Agriculture › C'river's Farmers Inaugurates Committe To Enforce Court Ruling by natdandav(op): 8:11am On Mar 11
C'River's farmers inaugurates committe to enforce court ruling

Cocoa farmers in Cross River have inaugurated committee to enforce court ruling that restrained the State government from evicting allottees from their cocoa farms.

The committee was inaugurated by Mba Ukweni, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Chief Executive Ukweni Chambers in Calabar on Tuesday.

He described the committee as "Team Obey Court Order," noting that they are meant to safeguard cocoa farmers' right and bring back sanity to the government cocoa estate in Etung local government area of Cross River.

Ukweni urged the team to sensitise and enlighten farmers on the need to respect the court order.

Ukweni, counsel to allottees stated that the court had passed an interlocutory injunction in favour of the allottees, restraining the state government and its agents from evicting them from their legitimate cocoa farms.

He said that government cannot forcefully evict the allottees from their farmlands after collecting money from them to settle royalties owed to cocoa landlords' communities for about 16 years.

He urged the team to discharge their duties peacefully without violence and report anyone disobeying the court order to the appropriate authorities.

"Your activities have to be peaceful and orderly. Don't resort to violence," he said.

Ukweni read the terms of reference guiding the taskforce's operations, which include placing affected cocoa farms under surveillance, identifying offenders, and bringing them to justice.

The committee is expected to encourage farmers and other beneficiaries to possess their farmlands in line with the agreement they entered into with the government.

Meanwhile, defaulters of the court order have been served with forms 48 and 49, warning them of impending consequences.

Ukweni maintained that the government can not go against an agreement it entered into with the allottees, and that the court order must be obeyed.

"Court made an order restraining the government from evicting beneficiaries, and we set up this team 'Obey Court Order' to ensure compliance," he said.
Politics › APC Charges Chapter Chairmen On Transparency, Party Supremacy In C’river by natdandav(op): 10:31am On Mar 06
APC charges chapter chairmen on transparency, party supremacy in C’River

The Chapter chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River have been charged on transparency and work for the overall interest of the party rather than their alleged “Godfather”.

Mr Chris Etta, State Chairman of the party, gave this charge during the inauguration of the chapter chairmen on Thursday in Calabar.

Etta emphasised that as the party’s representative at the local government level, the chapter chairmen must live above board and be responsive to the yearnings of the party faithful in the council areas.

He noted that their election was a testament to their acceptability by the people and as such, could not afford to work for anyone’s interest, other than that of the party and those who elected them.

“Your election is a call to duty and not to serve the interest of your godfather or build power for yourself and you must work as a team with their executive.

“The party must be a priority to you rather than your sponsor or godfather. Make yourself available to your people,” he said.

Etta further urged the chairmen to hit the ground running, as there was no time to waste, owing to the tight schedule of the 2027 general elections.

“There are so many things to be done right now, at both the zonal congress and the national convention.

“In view of this, you must inaugurate your ward executives by this weekend and report back to the secretariat by Monday,” stated.

Responding, chairman of the chapter chairmen, Chief Kevin Ojong, pledged their loyalty to the party and its leadership.

According to him, they have been given a matching order and a mile stone to cover.

“We will do all that is expected of us and for the interest of the party.

Our aim is to work for the growth of the APC in Cross River and nothing less,” he stated.

It would be recalled that the state chapter of the APC had on Tuesday, elected a new 35-member executive to lead the party in the next four years.

Imasuangbon Blasts APC Over Alleged Attack on Obi, Oyegun in Benin

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State, Barrister Ken Imasuangbon, on Wednesday condemned what he described as rising political intolerance in the state, warning that Tuesday’s attack on key opposition figures could trigger chaos and anarchy if not urgently addressed.

Imasuangbon was reacting to the reported attack on the Benin residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, where the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and other political stakeholders were said to be meeting behind closed doors.

Describing the incident as “the height of political desperation and intimidation,” the ADC stalwart called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rein in members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State.

He said, “It is deeply troubling that Edo State is witnessing this emerging wave of political intolerance. What happened on Tuesday is a prelude to chaos and anarchy if not checked,” Imasuangbon said.

He alleged that the attack bore “the imprint of ruling party hirelings,” insisting that such acts of political gangsterism must be condemned by all lovers of democracy.

According to him, “The news of the attack on the ADC Secretariat in Benin and the residence of Chief Odigie-Oyegun, where prominent leaders like Peter Obi and others were meeting, came to us as a rude shock.

"It is embarrassing and unbecoming of a state with our democratic history.”

Imasuangbon popularly called the "riceman" warned against turning Edo into a battleground ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Edo State should not be turned into a political battlefield as 2027 approaches. We have gone past that era. Politics should be played freely and fairly,” he stated.

The former governorship aspirant, popularly known as “Riceman,” urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to rise to the occasion and ensure law and order.

“Governor Monday Okpebholo should stand firm and put his house in order. Edo deserves better. This is a time to showcase achievements in office, not to encourage miscreants to act as political enforcers,” he said.

He further lamented that the incident had brought reputational damage to Edo State in the comity of nations.

“This is not the Edo State our founding fathers built. We must not allow desperation to destroy the democratic foundations they laid,” he added.

Edo Govt Faults Obi’s Claim of Attack on Supporters, Says Allegation Is False

The Edo State Government has strongly denied an allegation by former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, that members of his political camp were attacked by government officials during activities in the state.

In a detailed statement issued on Tuesday, the government described the claim as “false, malicious and a clear misrepresentation of facts,” stressing that neither Governor Monday Okpebholo nor any organ of the state government authorised or carried out attacks against members of any political party.

The statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Patrick Ebojele, said the Okpebholo administration “is not, and will never be, in the business of attacking innocent Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliation.”

According to the government, no directive was at any time issued by the governor or state officials to target supporters of the Labour Party or any other political group.

It added that the allegation lacked credible evidence and appeared calculated to mislead the public and create unnecessary political tension.

The statement recalled Governor Okpebholo’s earlier remarks on high-profile political visits to Edo State, clarifying that such comments were made strictly in his capacity as the Chief Security Officer of the state.

The statement further explained that the governor’s position was guided by security considerations and public safety, not political hostility toward any individual or organisation.

“The governor has consistently maintained that politically exposed persons are expected to notify relevant authorities ahead of major public engagements to enable adequate security coordination in the interest of public safety,” the statement said.

The government described attempts to interpret the governor’s security advisory as intimidation or evidence of orchestrated attacks as “unfortunate, misleading and politically motivated.”

Providing further context, the statement referenced an incident that occurred on Monday, 23 February, involving a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate Chief Whip, Roland Owie.

According to the government, the group was denied access to a meeting held at the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun due to an internal crisis within the party. The situation, it said, was resolved only after armed police officers were deployed to restore peace.

The government argued that the incident underscored the role of security agencies in managing internal political disputes, rather than supporting claims of state-sponsored intimidation.

While accusing the ADC and, by extension, Peter Obi of what it termed an attempt to cast aspersions on the administration, the state government maintained that it would not condone any form of violence and remained focused on its developmental agenda.

The Edo State Government therefore urged political actors to verify facts before making public statements capable of overheating the polity.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all residents and visitors to the state, while upholding the constitutional rights of Nigerians to lawful movement and association.

The statement concluded that the administration’s priority remains governance, public safety and economic development, and not political persecution.
Nairaland General › Navy Calls For Inclusion Of Golf Tournament In C'river Touring Calendar by natdandav(op):
Navy calls for inclusion of Golf tournament in C'River touring calendar

The Nigerian Navy has called for the Inclusion of the annual Eastern Naval Command (ENC) Golf Tournament in the tourism calendar of Cross River.

The demand was made by the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, at the occasion of the 2026 edition of the tournament at the Calabar Golf course on Sunday.

While lauding the organization of this year's edition, Ezeoba emphasised that a tournament that attracted golfers from across the country has the potential to boost the state's tourism sector as well as attract the needed revenue.

He asserted that all that was needed was for the Cross River government to key in and be partner of the annual event subsequently.

According to him, "I have had a wonderful experience of golf and I must say that it's something that should be encouraged. Golf is life, whether we like it or not.

"In this edition, we had people over 81 years and above who did nine holes that tells you that even at old age, if you are a golfer, you still have a medium of exercising yourself to the best of your ability.

"Well, it is an annual event in the calendar of the activities of the flag officers and of our command structure. So every year is part of their regimental activities.

"But what is important is to find a more sustainable way to support the effort outside the realms of the Navy or the confines of the flag officers' capability and financial resources.

"So, my take is that the state government should come in, add value to the development of this course as a source of tourism potential for the state."

On his part, Rear Admiral Chiedozie Okehie, Flag Officer Commanding of the ENC, said the 2026 edition of the annual event attracted 152 golfers from across Nigeria to Calabar.

He noted that aside from the physical fitness value of the sport, the annual event also serves as a venue for networking.

On the nexus between the sport and security, Okehie said, "the Calabar Golf course is about 10km so, we must focus on the physical fitness of our personnel in addition to their mental toughness."

While welcoming the golfers to the state, Peter Odey, Cross River's deputy governor, declared the state as the most peaceful in the country today.

Odey encouraged the golfers to help promote the state as an investment destination, particularly in the area of tourism and agriculture.

On the evemt, Odey said, "To be honest, I didn't know it was going to be this well-organised. I'm impressed with what I've seen here. I'm impressed with the way they are taking it seriously.

"it's an encouragement for some of us who've just started playing golf to ensure that we step up our game."

On his part, Patrick Acholonu, the traditional ruler of Orlu in Imo state, urged that state to take advantage of the tournament to promote and boost it tourism sector.

Tuesday Achukwu, an assistant comptroller of Customs in Kaduna state, emerged the overall winner of the tournament with 80 gross, 12 under par, handicap 20 and returned 60 net.

In his victory speech, Achukwu asserted that hard work paved the way for his victory.

"I arrived Calabar earlier and we to practice at the golf course, but was shocked to discover that it is the biggest course I have ever played in and it took me some time to get acquainted with the course.

"I must say that perseverance and resilience and commitment pave the way for me," he emphasized.

NDIC intensifies savings campaign, highlights children’s savings in C’River Secondary Schools

The Nigeria Deposits Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has intensified its campaign in Secondary Schools in Cross River, highlighting the importance of inculcating the habit of savings in children.

Mrs Bokepere Adeghe, Principal Manager, Communications and Public Affairs Department, NDIC made the remark in Calabar on Wednesday.

No fewer than five secondary schools were part of the campaign that took place in Government Girls Secondary School, Calabar.

Adeghe said that developing the habit of savings at an early age would make the children financially secure in the future and prudent in the management of their resources.

She explained that the programme on enlightening children on savings is an NDIC initiative being carried out annually in October during the celebration of the World Savings Day.

‘’Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold it last year, so we just got a date from the ministry this year.

‘’It is important to enlighten children on the essence of saving and catching them young; another angle of the initiative is also to make people aware of what NDIC does, our mandates, and our functions.

“We protect banks, we supervise banks; our mandates are full Bank deposit guarantee, bank supervision, bank resolution, and bank liquidation,’’ she said.

Adeghe said that they aimed at highlighting the safety of money in banks and to assure the children that they could save their money in the banks.

‘’That is basically what we came here to do today,” she stated.

Similarly, Mr Obialor Ugochuchwu, Zonal Controller, Owerri zonal office of the NDIC, advised the children to disregard the rumour that banks were not safe to save money.

‘’The importance of the corporation is to ensure that the money they save in any bank, protected by the NDIC, is secured and they get their money back, should there be any challenges,’’ he said.

The students expressed joy over the programme and promised to commence the habit of saving every kobo earn.

In her reaction, Miss Chinaza Kalu said, “I learned that saving is something I should do. I learned that saving helps a lot, if not now, in the future.

On her part, Mrs Arit Onaga, Principal of Government Girls Secondary School, expressed happiness for the choice of her school for the programme.

While advising the students to put into practice what they were taught, she encouraged them to share the knowledge with other students who were not part of the programme.

Politics › PDP Lost 2023 C'river Governorship Poll To Internal Sabotage, Onor by natdandav(op): 10:29am On Feb 16
PDP lost 2023 C'River governorship poll to internal sabotage, Onor

Prof. Sandy Onor, Cross River's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in 2023, says the party lost the election due to internal sabotage and nothing else.

Onor who was a member of the senate in the 9th assembly, made the disclosure on Sunday in Calabar during an interview with newsmen to mark his 60th birthday anniversary.

He said he had the capacity to govern the state, and he articulated his reasons for running for the position.

Onor, however, noted that some persons, who felt aggrieved for whatever reasons, sabotaged the party by carrying out anti-party activity that cumulated into loss of the governorship poll.

He said those attributing loss of the election to any other factor were merely doing so to cover their "evil deeds."

"But if we had won that election, would anybody have said anything, and I knew why we lost. Even journalists know why we lost.

"No matter your campaign, once the super structure of the electoral system is seized from you, you will lose.

"Those who are still making noise about my loss are those who imagined that PDP was their personal property and nobody can defeat them.

"We defeated them at the primaries, and heaven did not fall. They have no capacity bigger than my own, this bad Belle is too much.

"You engage in anti-party, and you are proud to continue to sing it for a man who has benefitted from the party not because of merit but because of access for over 24 years.

"Those blaming me for PDP’s failure are cowards, people who felt that the PDP was their personal property, so when they failed, they refused to recover from their failure.
There is no sportsmanship in their attitude.

"They should be ashamed of themselves that they did anti party, and they should stop spewing lies all over the place.

"I know why I lost the elections, and it's not to the fact of what they are saying. When it is time, we will speak," he declared.

Onor, who represented Cross River Central in the 9th assembly, however, said that those undermining the PDP ahead of the 2027 general electronic would be shocked by what they will see.

Speaking on his 60th birthday anniversary, Onor said God has been kind to him considering his background and the village he hailed from.

According to him, "I have no regrets at 60, you know with the benefits of hindsight you look at some things, maybe you would imagine that if you did it this other way, maybe it would have been better, I am a very careful thinker and very deliberate in my actions.

Politics › PDP Lost 2023 C'river Governorship Poll To Internal Sabotage, Onor by natdandav(op): 10:23am On Feb 16

"No matter how carefully planned your life is, there are variables that are not within your grasp. That is why God is greater than man.

"I am not a devious person, so all my actions are well thought out, and whatever variables are thrown at me, I calculate.

"I have done my best and also deal with them as I see them as a man. So, for me, all that has happened to me has been according to God.

Politics › Prof. Onor Warns Against Undermining PDP In 2027 by natdandav(op): 9:35am On Feb 16
Prof. Onor warns against undermining PDP in 2027

Prof. Sandy Onor, Cross River's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in 2023 has warned against undermining the capacity of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Professor of History in the University of Calabar (Unical) gave the warning while speaking with newsmen as part of activities marking his 60th birthday anniversary in Calabar on Sunday.

Onor, who represented Cross River Central senatorial district in the 9th assembly, said that the party has put behind internal crisis that almost destroyed.

He described PDP as once biggest party in Africa.

While attributing the crisis to fifth columnist, Onor emphasised that attempt to barkanise would only make it stronger and better.

According to him, the recent court pronouncement denouncing the alleged convention in Ibadan is a pointer that those who stood on the part of truth have been vindicated.

He stressed that calling Nyesom Wike a factional leader of the party was wrong as there was never a faction but rather those who challenged the sidelining of the party’s constitution for selfish purposes.

"That being said, I want you all to know that PDP is alive and kicking.

"We shouldn't be periodising the flow of political history. God has his own time. If God says in 2027 we will bounce back, we will definitely bounce back; if he says in 2027 we should tarry a bit, we will tarry but what I am telling you is that we are not dead.

"When you are engaging in farming, don't you plant a seed? Sometimes a seed is being planted and people think it is dead, but then it germinates with fruits that are even better than the previous ones.

"So, we are not dead. We are going through our own vicissitudes, which is a natural tendency for every organisation, for every man. The party will come out from the valley to the mountain too again.

"We are patient and resilient enough to go through it all. We have learnt better and will do better in the future. That is the truth.

"I'm not a lawyer but there is no reasonable court who will clap for you for violating court orders.

"Very soon we will organise our own national convention. We will keep the door open for reconciliation, if they come, we take them," he stated.

On his relationship with the FCT minister, Onor said, beyond politics, he likes Wike's company, enjoys his fidelity, likes his dependability, and has also elected to make him his political leader.

He emphasised that the FCT minister's style may not be the style of everyone, but his style is productive and yields results in its own way.

"He is a very great guy, patriotic and dependable. He os one of the best leaders Nigeria has been able to produce," he said.

Speaking on his journey of life at 60, the professor of History said he has had a beautiful public service record, as well as a good father and husband.

"I don't think it is for me to say because I cannot be hyping myself but I think there are many of them relating to my life.

"I graduated top of my class at 21, got back to teach in the University at 22, started the Masters Programme and got advanced to the Ph.D because of my brilliant performance, had a PhD just as I turned 27.

"Got into politics and was elected into several offices. I went back to the university and became a professor. I have so many books and articles to my credit.

"My public service record is beautiful. I am happily married with children. I am a happy man. But like I said, I have also had my own shares of failure. In all of my stride, God has been beautiful," he said.

Why the Grammys Still Don’t See Afrobeats; And Why That’s About to Change.

BY CHRISTOPHER OJO
CEO/Executive Producer,
1st World Entertainment.

Red isn't just a color to me. It is an unmistakable pointer to who i am. As a music executive and as the CEO and Executive Producer of 1st World Entertainment, my presence at the 2026 Grammy Awards reinforced long-held convictions about the architecture of global entertainment power.

In this industry, Los Angeles stands as the clearest marker of the practical possibilities of show business.

The Grammys remain an unmistakable indicator of relevance across all forms of music and entertainment enterprise, most notably the visible and tangible milestones of success etched along Hollywood Boulevard.

There are moments during Grammy week when attention drifts from the grand screens and curated performances to the stars embedded in the pavement, engraved testaments to the imprints left by artists and ventures that once began with ambition and belief.

This celebrated pathway carries the names of individuals who transitioned from driven obscurity to unmistakable identification through cohesive storytelling, branding, and cultural alignment, elements Hollywood has long mastered.

From an executive vantage point, the absence of an Afrobeats artist claiming that felt symbol of recognition is not an indicator of defeat. Rather, it is a strategic signal. A call to attention that we, as ambitious and energetic Africans, must heed by taking deeper ownership of how our stories are produced, positioned, and preserved within the global entertainment economy.

Afrobeats is not unseen because it lacks global appeal or musical excellence; it is overlooked because the systems that reward recognition respond to structure, continuity, and long term narrative alignment. Until our sound is matched by equally intentional positioning, ownership, and storytelling, visibility will remain inconsistent.

Our narratives must, therefore, be powered by a collective identity of relevance, particularly in the imprints we leave through the confident display of our show business and entertainment prowess.

Our expression and presence at the Grammy Awards require meticulous curation, not merely to seek validation, but to articulate stories of the essential and unmistakable elements that draw the world, especially the entertainment industry, into sustained engagement and recognition beyond nominations.

We possess a unique sonic identity, shaped by the ethereal convergence of diverse cultural influences, forming a vibrant and commercially compelling creative flow.

What is changing now is not the sound, but the consciousness behind it. African music is entering an era led by executives, producers, and cultural architects who understand that recognition is engineered, not accidental.

As this shift accelerates, our presence at future Grammy ceremonies wili no longer ask to be noticed; it will assert relevance with clarity, cohesion, and commercial intent. This is how Afrobeats moves from participation to permanence and why the Grammys will not just see it, but reckon with it.

FG to intervene on 115km Ikom-Obudu Federal Highway – lawmaker

Dr Victor Abang, Representing Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency of Cross River in the House of Representatives, says the Federal Government will soon intervene in the 115km Ikom-Obudu federal highway.

Abang disclosed this on Tuesday, while giving account of his stewardship to members of his constituency in Calabar.

The road has seen youths of the areas protesting against it’s poor condition and abandonment for several decades.

The protesters, armed with placards of various inscriptions had vowed to remain on the highway until something urgent was done on the road.

The protesting youths blocked the highway and prevented commuters from plying the road.

The lawmaker however, explained that the road has been captured in the 2026 budget and advised the youths to desist from staging protests and blocking the road.

Addressing the concerns of the youths, Abang said: “As much as we sympathise with the youths, the procurement process for road construction is a bit long.

“The state Gov. Bassey Otu alongside national assembly members have made representation to the Federal Government, and as we speak, adequate provision has been made for the road in the 2026 budget.

“We, as representatives also met with the works minister, and we are sure with this and the efforts of the governor the road has been captured,” he said.

He assured the youths that construction work would soon commence on the road and cautioned them against punishing road users by blocking the road.

Abang listed a number of interventions in the constituency to include the Kakwagon/Oki/Borun/Njua Road, the Katchuan/Bitia/Kakwagon/Nkayang/Kakubok roads with foundational enhancement to forge links with harvest zones.

He also disclosed that he sponsored a bill to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Boki as the area has no tertiary hospital.

Abang also said that he was working to attract a constituency project to all the wards in the federal constituency.

The lawmaker explained that the decision to present his achievements publicly was driven by the need to counter misinformation, particularly on the social media.

According to him, governance often presents realities that differ from campaign promises.

He noted that while some pledges could not be fulfilled due to prevailing constraints, several impactful projects were executed, including interventions that were not originally part of his campaign agenda.

Abang cited the expansion of network connectivity to rural communities as part of his major achievements.

He explained that although it was not promised during campaigns, the opportunity emerged after he assumed office.

He disclosed that 35 communities have so far been connected with telecommunication masts, improving communication and economic activities, while more communities are scheduled for intervention.

Abang said his legislative focus has been guided by effective representation, advocacy, and the protection of community interests.

Retreat: Okpebholo Charges Edo Public Service Leaders on Performance, Accountability

Governor Monday Okpebholo has charged civil and public service leaders in Edo State to embrace discipline, teamwork, and measurable results, declaring that his administration is driven strictly by performance and accountability.

The governor was speaking during the opening ceremony of a 3-day Orientation and Strategic Leadership Retreat for top government officials at Udomi Townhall in Esan Central Local Government Area of the state.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Dr Patrick Ebojele, the retreat, themed “High Performing Public Service for Sustainable Development of Edo State,” is the first of its kind since the beginning of his administration.

According to the governor, the gathering was not a social event but a serious engagement aimed at strengthening governance in the state.

“We are gathered here today not for a jamboree but for a purpose. This retreat is designed to serve dual purposes — orientation and capacity building for top government officials,” he said.

He explained that the programme was structured to reposition the administration for effective service delivery, strengthen collaboration across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and deepen understanding of governance processes.

“Our administration is driven by a clear vision of the SHINE Agenda. This vision is practical governance that delivers results,” the governor stated.

He stressed that good governance requires collective responsibility, noting that no ministry or appointee can succeed in isolation.

“Good governance is teamwork, and no single appointee or agency can succeed in isolation. We must work as a team and strengthen collaboration across the MDAs,” Okpebholo said.

The governor warned appointees against using public office for personal enrichment, stressing that service must remain the guiding principle of leadership.

“I want to repeat my warning to you… public office is a call to service, and not for profit-making or personal gain. Every naira we spend must deliver value and every policy must produce measurable results,” he warned.

According to him, the retreat marks a fresh beginning in the way the Edo State Government will be run, with renewed emphasis on discipline, accountability, and performance monitoring.

“Your performance will be measured. Tangible results and excellence will now determine your status in this administration,” Okpebholo declared.

He urged participants to take the retreat seriously, participate actively, and remain committed to delivering quality governance to Edo people.

“I charge you to participate actively, think boldly, and commit fully to the collective success of this administration. Edo people are watching, and they deserve nothing less than excellence,” he said.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, explained that the major philosophy behind the retreat is that “Edo is building Edo,” stressing that the transformation of the state must be driven by Edo people themselves.

He also delivered a presentation on Project S.H.I.N.E, the official framework and strategic blueprint for Edo State’s transformation under the Okpebholo administration.

In his welcome address, the Head of Service, Dr Anthony Okhungbowa, expressed optimism that the retreat would strengthen leadership capacity and improve service delivery across the state.

Participants at the retreat include Honourable Commissioners, Special Advisers, Permanent Secretaries and heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

Stop rating NASS members by number of constituency projects -Akiba

Mr Bassey Akiba (APC-Cross River), on Saturday night decried the current system of rating lawmakers by the number of constituency projects executed, saying it undermined and their primary role of lawmaking.

Akiba, representative of Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, said this when he interfaced with some selected journalists in Calabar.

He said that Nigerians should focus on demanding good governance instead of project execution.

According to him, lawmaking is the core function of a legislator.

He noted that while there was nothing wrong with Nigerians demanding good governance from their representatives, project execution was a distraction from lawmaking.

“No doubt constituency projects help address community needs, but many lawmakers see it as a distraction from lawmaking.

“Am not saying it is wrong, but most Nigerians do not know that it is not a primary responsibility of a lawmaker.

“We struggle hard to get these projects attracted to our constituencies and it is affecting our primary responsibility which is making laws,” he said.

The lawmaker however said that in spite of the seeming challenge, he had been able to impact positively in the lives of his constituents through developmental projects and social intervention programmes.

He explained that he adopted a verifiable constituency-based initiative spanning education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and economic empowerment to bring the dividends of democracy to his constituets

According to him, I adopted a grassroots-focused approach aimed at reaching a broader cross-section of constituents rather than concentrating benefits on a few individuals.

“On agriculture, my constituency outreach operates across four value chains—cassava, oil palm, poultry, and fisheries, through which farmers receive inputs such as hybrid cassava stems and poultry feeds to boost productivity.

“A cooperative-based empowerment programme was established across each ward in both Calabar Municipality and Odukpani Local Government Area with thousands of residents enrolled, and the initiative is supported annually with funding.

“₦25 million was disbursed through the scheme in the most recent cycle to enable members access micro-support for agriculture and small-scale economic activities through the Bank of Agriculture,” he explained.

Akiba added that on education, he inaugurated a ₦50 million educational support programme in 2024, followed by an expanded ₦100 million scheme in 2025, targeting indigent students.

“Beneficiaries receive assistance covering school fees, books, and other learning materials, including school bags.

“In the area of public safety and infrastructure, my intervention has improved night-time visibility and enhanced security in previously dark areas across several communities of the constituency,” he also said. (NAN)

He also said that 17,000 oil palm seedlings, as well as improved cassava varieties were distributed to farmers in the constituency.

“However, my focus this year is health, where we are using economic structure at the wards levels to mobilise people to access these programmes.

“So, for health, we are looking at a few things. Almost 4,000 of our people were given free treatment. Out of the 4,000, about 410 persons got surgery of different types.

“This year, we are going to do more. But beyond averages, we are looking at a situation where people will carry my card and go to the hospital and access healthcare for free.

“As I speak, there are a number of people like that that goes to hospital with my card to access health care for free.

“So our target is that we need to do not less than 10,000 of these people, and we are working towards that.

“We are also going to do more. we are also working towards the revitalisation of a number of primary health care centers,” he said.

Akiba also disclosed that his tenure had been defined by a rigorous balance between constitutional mandates and grassroots economic empowerment.

He categorised his work into two distinct frameworks; the “in-chamber mandate” (lawmaking, oversight, and representation) and the “out-chamber mandate” (communication and economic restructuring).

He further revealed that he had sponsored 14 motions and three bills within the last two years.

According to him, the motions and bills focused on areas such as technology education, hospital personnel management, and data regulation.

The lawmaker emphasised that motions and bills should not be the “exclusive responsibility” of the lawmaker, urging constituents and journalists to identify obsolete laws for amendment.

“I keep encouraging constituents to bring motionable issues to us. When RUCU was almost cut off, they brought it to me, and I took it to the floor,” he said.

He explained that the cornerstone of his “out-chamber” success was the establishment of a cooperative-based economic structure in every polling unit across his constituency.

“These cooperatives serve as both a social safety net and a logistical platform for distributing dividends of democracy.

“I understand the power of people coming together. We use that platform to activate participation,” the lawmaker explained.

He further disclosed that he had certified 500 cooperatives, paying the necessary government fees to ensure they remain viable and independent of his office. (NAN)

The Federal Government says it remains committed to promoting and creating synergies with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and the private sector to enhance food security, economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari stated this on Thursday in Calabar during the distribution of farm inputs to farmers in Cross River.

Represented by Mr Bassey Iwara, Director, Agric Business and Market Development in the ministry, Kyari noted that the present administration had demonstrated the political will to transform the agricultural sector.

He explained that the President Bola Tinubu- led administration was implementing various economic reforms to stimulate productive capacity, create jobs, and reduce cost of living.

Kyari further noted that emergency responses and targeted humanitarian actions have also been taken to ameliorate food crisis in the country.

“Consequently, the ministry has rolled out many programmes and projects to address some of the challenges of farmers and make food available, accessible and affordable to all Nigerians.

“The ministry has considered the implementation of short-term plans and support mechanism to make essential farm inputs more affordable and accessible to farmers through a transparent and accountable process.

“Our foremost concern is the facilitation of agro-input as and basic farm machinery to small-scale farmers, who are constrained by the high market cost of these essential inputs, and this need assistance,” he stated.

Also, Mr Ekori Nsan, the state coordinator of the federal ministry of agriculture, asserted that the present administration had been putting smiles on the faces of farmers irrespective of the degree.

He urged the farmers to put the items to good use so as to achieve the intended goal of enhancing food securitty.

“The era of collect and sell or dump is gone; a follow up mechanism has been put in place; and it will be very bad for us to hear stories on this,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Asuquo Asuquo, commended the government for deeming it fit to provide them with the inputs.

He, however, appealed that the farmers be trained on how to use the inputs.

Items distributed were water sprayers and power tillers.

How Okpebholo’s Cloud will Give Edo sovereign digital lungs

By Patrick Ahkere Ebojele, PhD

The launch of Edo Cloud by the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo has breathed new life into the state’s digital governance journey, while also bringing to light the deep structural flaws in the former fraudulent e-governance platform inherited from the previous government. That administration made efforts to digitise public service processes, but with a system was weighed down by legal, technical and operational weaknesses that eventually made a full overhaul unavoidable.

With Edo Cloud — a fully state-owned, home-grown digital platform — Edo State has reclaimed control of its digital infrastructure and repositioned itself as a leading example of sustainable e-governance in Nigeria.

One of the biggest weaknesses of the failed e-governance platform was the absence of full state ownership. While it supported paperless governance and digital workflows, Edo State Government did not own the intellectual property behind the system. In practical terms, the state was running its daily operations on a platform it did not fully control — a risky position for any serious government.

Closely connected to this was restricted backend access. Government officials could not independently manage, modify or fully control the platform without relying on external consultants. This created a dangerous dependency that weakened institutional autonomy and exposed government operations to avoidable risks.

Another major concern was limited data sovereignty. Without full ownership, the state could not guarantee complete control over its data. In today’s digital world, where data security and privacy are central to governance, this was a significant vulnerability.

Sustainability was also a problem. With no internal control or ownership, the long-term future of the platform depended heavily on external parties. Any breakdown in that relationship could disrupt government operations, slow service delivery and reverse years of digital progress.

The system also lacked flexibility. It was not modular enough to support easy upgrades, expansion or integration of new services without heavy technical intervention. This slowed innovation and made it harder for the platform to evolve alongside the growing needs of the civil and public service.

On top of all this, technical dependency became a burden. Routine maintenance, updates and troubleshooting required outside support, increasing operational costs and limiting opportunities for in-house technical capacity development.

These defects may not have been obvious to the public, but they posed serious long-term risks to governance stability, service continuity and digital independence — risks the Okpebholo administration chose not to ignore.

Upon assuming office, Governor Monday Okpebholo ordered a thorough review of the state’s digital governance framework. According to the Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, the Governor found it unacceptable for Edo State to “breathe through the nostrils of another” — a clear reference to the state’s digital dependency.

Instead of patching a system that was fundamentally flawed, the administration chose a bolder and more sustainable path: building a fully state-owned, home-grown platform that would permanently resolve issues of ownership, control, security and sustainability.

That decision marked a turning point in Edo’s digital governance journey. The outcome of that bold choice is Edo Cloud — a state-owned cloud platform designed, built, managed and maintained entirely within Edo State’s technology ecosystem.

As part of its rollout, over 70 E-Governance Champions were trained at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City on the platform’s interface, functionality and deployment strategy. The training brought together civil servants from various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), alongside technical experts and key stakeholders.

Declaring the workshop open, Dr. Okungbowa described Edo Cloud as a major leap forward in the state’s digital transformation, noting that it is more robust, secure and user-friendly than the former system.

Unlike the old platform, Edo Cloud guarantees full data sovereignty, ensuring that Edo State alone owns, controls and manages its digital infrastructure and data assets.

It also provides unrestricted backend access, empowering government technical teams to independently manage, modify, upgrade and maintain the system without external interference.

Another key strength of Edo Cloud is sustainability. Because it is fully state-owned, the platform eliminates long-term dependence on third parties, reduces operational costs and ensures continuity of service regardless of political transitions.

Technically, Edo Cloud features a modular architecture that supports continuous upgrades, easy integration of new services and seamless expansion across MDAs. This ensures the platform grows with the needs of the civil and public service.

Speaking on the technical design, Dr. Benjamin Ben, who led the development team, explained that Edo Cloud offers improved data control, a unified user experience, enhanced scalability and automated workflows.

He said the platform was deliberately designed to be simple and intuitive, making it easier for civil servants across MDAs to adopt and use.

Unlike the former system, which often required external technical support, Edo Cloud enables independent usage and internal support. E-Gov Champions are now equipped to train and assist their colleagues, reducing the need for constant outside intervention.

“With what we have done, there will be no need for micro-managing. The E-Gov Champions will provide support for their community. This aligns with His Excellency’s directive that civil and public servants should be able to do their jobs independently,” Dr. Ben said.

The Head of IT Infrastructure and System Engineering at the Edo State Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), Engr. Courage Adaghe, stressed that Edo Cloud is fully state-owned, guaranteeing security, sustainability and flexibility.

He explained that the platform was built, managed and maintained entirely within Edo State’s technology ecosystem, ensuring local capacity building and institutional knowledge retention.

“The platform will serve as a one-stop digital solution for public service operations. It was fully built, managed and maintained within Edo State’s technology ecosystem,” he said.

This local ownership model stands in sharp contrast to the former platform, where core control remained outside the state.

Beyond its technical advantages, Edo Cloud is designed to strengthen transparency, accountability, efficiency and citizen participation. By digitising workflows, reducing paperwork and automating processes, the platform is expected to significantly improve service delivery across MDAs.

Dr. Okungbowa noted that the adoption of Edo Cloud will enhance transparency and accountability, improve governance processes, reduce bureaucracy and position Edo State once again at the forefront of digital public service administration in Nigeria.

He also urged E-Gov Champions to act as ambassadors of the new system, noting that resistance to change often comes from poor communication and lack of understanding.

One of the participants, Mr. Ogbewe Osaro Anthony, E-Gov Champion from the Edo State Social Investment Programme Office, commended Governor Okpebholo for approving a fully state-owned platform.

He described Edo Cloud as richer in content, more flexible and better suited to public service operations than the previous system, adding that its features would significantly enhance collaboration and productivity across MDAs.

This feedback reflects growing confidence within the civil service that Edo Cloud is not just a replacement system, but a transformational tool.

The former e-governance platform denied Edo state ownership, restricted access, limited sustainability, poor scalability and heavy external dependency — made it unsuitable for long-term governance stability.

Now Governor Okpebholo’s Edo Cloud has tackled these weaknesses directly by delivering a platform that is fully state-owned, secure, sustainable, scalable, user-friendly and locally managed.

With the Edo Cloud now operational, Edo State has not only reclaimed control of its digital future but has also set a new standard for sub-national digital governance in Nigeria.

In an era where data sovereignty, institutional autonomy and service efficiency define governance success, Governor Okpebholo’s bold investment in a home-grown cloud platform stands out as a visionary and future-proof decision.

Edo State is no longer borrowing digital breath — it now owns its digital lungs.

Sports › Owan Marathon Organisers To Sponsor Athletes To Okpekpe, Lagos Marathons by natdandav(op): 4:02pm On Jan 25
The organisers of the annual 10km Owan marathon have announced plans to sponsor athletes to Nigeria's two elite marathon races, Lagos and Okpekpe, scheduled for February and May 2026 respectively.

The organiser, Chris Ojo, made the disclosure while speaking on the just concluded Owan marathon in a statement made available to newsmen.

While noting that the annual Owan race was actually on its 7th edition, Ojo explained that the decision to sponsor athletes, particularly those from Edo State extraction, is to groom them for global stardom.

He said that as part of the plan, a coach would soon be unveiled that will train and take these athletes to the mentioned marathan races in Lagos and Okpekpe in Edo state.

"This is the essence of the Owan marathon race; discover talents, and groom them for global stardom.

"The only way we can prepare them for global stardom is to constantly engage them in major marathon races in Nigeria and beyond," he stated.

Speaking on the just concluded this year's edition of the Owan marathon race, Ojo who described it as a huge success, said a consultant would soon be engaged as part of effort to take the annual event to the next level.

Ojo asserted that the consultant to be engaged would not only market and promote the event but also be involved in the planning of the main race.

According to Ojo, "all these are geared towards standardising the race that has begun to attract the participation of international athletes, particularly from Ghana and other neighboring countries.

"As you will recall, when we started this event, it was dominated by local athletes from Owan and other parts of Edo state, and progresses to other states.

"The 2026 edition saw athletes from Ghana stealing the show with their athletes carting away three of the six top prizes in both the male and female categories."

The Owan marathon organisers noted that the 2026 edition also saw the government of Edo state, including the Owan local government, showing more interest in the annual event.

Ojo particularly commended the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku and Chairman of the state Sports Commission, Desmond Enabulele, for their involvement in the 2026 editon.

According to the organiser, "their roles in this year's edition brought more glamour to the annual event as their promise of full participation in subsequent editions is also a boost to us."

Ojo said he initiated that annual event to provide a platform where talents, especially from the Owan community, can be discovered and nurtured.

While noting that he remained fulfilled that he has remained consistent in organising the annual event since the first edition, he, however, conceded that the race is not where he aimed for it to be.

According to him, that is the essence he planned to engage a consultant beginning from the next edition of the race.

Contractors: Okpebholo says performance will determine future jobs

Governor Monday Okpebholo has warned contractors that future jobs will be determined by their current performance, just as he reaffirmed his administration's commitment to quality, speed, and accountability in the execution of projects across the state.

The governor emphasised that his government does not owe allegiance to any contractor but to the people of Edo State.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Ebojele, the governor made this clarification in Benin on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting with major contractors handling key projects in the state.

The meeting focused on a comprehensive review of project status, progress timelines, quality standards, causes of delays, and contractor accountability.

Thr governor stressed that awarding contracts is only the first step, noting that effective follow-up and proper execution are critical to achieving value-driven and durable infrastructure.

According to him, "I’m happy you are here for this brief meeting. One thing is to give a contract, another thing is to follow up, and the third is execution.

“I have been visiting project sites and I can see work in progress, but I am not too happy with the pace of some of the projects. Projects that are seven to nine months old should have made more visible progress by now.”

While commending some contractors, including CCECC and Setraco, for improved performance, the governor made it clear that funding has never been an issue, as his administration has ensured prompt payment of contractors’ certificates.

“I can say it authoritatively that no contractor’s payment has been delayed. Nobody lobbied us to get paid. So, if we are paying you quickly, you must also work fast and complete projects within the agreed time,” he stated.

Okpebholo warned against any attempt to cut corners, emphasizing that his administration would not tolerate substandard work or unnecessary project revaluation.

He said, "I don’t delay payments because I don’t want any form of revaluation. If you come tomorrow to say I should revalue your contract, I will never do it. Since payment is not delayed, you must deliver as agreed."

He further stressed that future contracts will be strictly performance-based.

“The faster and better you perform, the faster we give you new projects. If you are not doing well, you will not get another job. We want projects that will last for Edo people, so that the next governor in 10 or 20 years will focus on other priorities.”

The governor cited recent site visits, including Church Road and Ekenhuan Road in Benin City, where he expressed concern over quality and drainage provisions, insisting that proper drainage systems must be included on both sides of Ekenhuan roads to ensure longevity.

Earlier, the Special Adviser on Projects, Phoebe-William Bello and the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Dr. Felix Akhabue, commended the governor for convening the meeting, describing it as a proactive step to directly engage contractors and fast-track project delivery, especially during the dry season.

Speaking on behalf of the contractors, Mr. Nazilh Nasr of NAFRO Nigeria Limited, handling the Benin Technical Road project, praised Governor Okpebholo for prompt payments.

He noted that although the project was initiated under the previous administration, the governor directed its continuation and has consistently honoured payment obligations.

" I want to thank the Governor for this opportunity and to say the previous government delayed our payment but since this administration, our payment has always been paid and you don't owe us". he said

Other dignitaries at the meeting included retired General Cecil Esekhaigbe, APC leader for Esan Central Senatorial District, and Mr. Sylvester Aigbobo, APC State Deputy Chairman, among others.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment by the contractors to accelerate work, adhere strictly to approved designs and quality standards, and maintain open communication with the Ministry of Works for timely intervention where challenges arise.

Business › Budget Transitions, Overlapping Appropriations, And Alignment With The Medium-te by natdandav(op): 10:56pm On Jan 16
Budget Transitions, Overlapping Appropriations, and Alignment with the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF)

This briefing note draws the attention of the Federal Executive Council to the fiscal management implications arising from the continued implementation of the 2024 budget into 2025, the delayed implementation of the 2025 budget despite its passage, and the passage of the 2026 budget in December 2025, which creates the risk of overlapping budget authorisations in 2026. The purpose is to support informed decision-making and promote orderly budget transitions consistent with the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework.

The MTEF is intended to provide a stable three-year fiscal framework that links government policy objectives to realistic macroeconomic assumptions and annual budget allocations. Its effectiveness depends on timely commencement and orderly closure of annual budgets. Prolonged reliance on earlier budgets or delayed activation of newly passed budgets weakens this linkage and reduces the credibility of fiscal planning.

From an economic management perspective, extended budget overlap creates policy misalignment. Budgets prepared under earlier macroeconomic conditions, particularly assumptions on inflation, exchange rates, energy prices, and debt servicing costs, become less effective when implemented far beyond their intended period. This can lead to unplanned adjustments, reduced policy impact, and weaker control over public expenditure.

Capital expenditure is particularly affected by delayed and overlapping budgets. Projects approved under earlier cost assumptions face rising input prices and financing constraints, resulting in slow execution, contract variations, and extended completion timelines. These delays reduce the developmental impact of public spending and weaken the intended growth and employment benefits of capital investments.

Overlapping budget implementation also complicates fiscal monitoring and debt management. When residual commitments from earlier budgets run alongside new appropriations, it becomes more difficult to clearly assess the fiscal position, manage deficits, and align borrowing with medium-term fiscal targets. This may increase reliance on short-term financing and reduce fiscal flexibility.

Predictability in budget implementation is also important for private sector confidence. Government contractors, suppliers, and investors rely on timely budget releases and clear expenditure priorities. Prolonged uncertainty can delay payments, affect liquidity in the private sector, and discourage investment, with wider implications for economic activity.

In line with MTEF best practices, it is advisable for government to prioritise the timely commencement of each fiscal year’s budget, ensure clear closure or ring-fencing of prior-year commitments, and align all annual appropriations strictly with updated macro-fiscal assumptions and approved expenditure ceilings. Transitional spending, where unavoidable, should remain limited in scope and duration and be clearly disclosed.

In addition, to prevent the practical and economic challenges associated with operating multiple budgets concurrently in 2026, the Executive and the Legislature may consider a structured merger of the 2025 and 2026 Appropriation Acts. Under this approach, the unimplemented provisions of the 2025 budget would be reviewed, updated, and integrated into the 2026 appropriation framework, allowing expenditure priorities to be rationalised, duplication eliminated, and cost assumptions aligned with current macroeconomic realities. A consolidated budget framework would provide a single, clear basis for implementation, monitoring, and accountability in the next fiscal year, while preserving the policy intent already approved by the Legislature.

In conclusion, orderly budget transitions are essential for effective fiscal management, economic stability, and development outcomes. Strengthening coordination around budget implementation, including consideration of a consolidated appropriation framework where necessary, will enhance the credibility of the MTEF, improve expenditure efficiency, and support the Federal Government’s broader economic and development objectives.
