Nigeria has been identified as both a major target of cyberattacks and a key source of cyber-enabled financial crime in Africa. This is according to the INTERPOL African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026, which highlights the country’s complex position in the continent’s rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape. The report highlighted Nigeria as one of Africa’s ransomware hotspots, recording 5,822 detections in 2025. The report found that while Nigerian government agencies and businesses are increasingly being targeted by ransomware attacks, criminal networks operating from the country continue to play a prominent role in business email compromise (BEC) schemes and international money laundering. Nigeria has Launched a new National Cloud Framework to Strengthen Digital Security in the country. The Framework is built on a solid architecture that emphasizes Digital Security by enforcing a safe and secure cloud regulatory instrument. The signing ceremony, held at the headquarters of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in Abuja, brought together key stakeholders from Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. Representing Galaxy Backbone, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju joined the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Engr. Nadungu Gagare, NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa, and other government officials for the official launch of the regulatory instrument. According to Galaxy Backbone, the National Sovereign Cloud Regulatory Instrument establishes Nigeria’s national guidelines and governance framework for cloud adoption, cloud services and supporting digital infrastructure. The framework also provides unified standards for cloud governance, covering areas such as data classification, data sovereignty, cloud security, risk management and investment promotion. The company said the initiative represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to build a trusted, secure and resilient digital economy by creating a clear regulatory environment for cloud computing and the protection of national data assets. Galaxy Backbone added that, as the Federal Government’s shared digital infrastructure and services provider, it remains committed to supporting the implementation of policies and technologies that enhance digital trust, strengthen data security and accelerate the country’s digital transformation agenda. China Robot Import Ban: What it means for both Countries as Chinese authorities raise alarm citing US Suppression United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday, announced a total ban on the Importation of foreign- Chinese made humanoid robot imports to the US citing "unacceptable risks" to America's national security. The Ban applies to advanced robots - including humanoid and four-legged machines. Many of which are made in China, which is competing with the US to develop robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). The move comes just days after OpenAI disclosed that its advanced AI models autonomously escaped a testing environment, gained internet access, and hacked into systems at Hugging Face, a major AI platform. No human intervention directed the actions. The models acted on their own initiative to achieve their goals. OpenAI described the event as an "unprecedented cyber incident" and worked with Hugging Face to contain it quickly. Mastercard has launched an Africa Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence, a pan-African initiative it said will help financial institutions, government bodies and businesses share threat intelligence and shore up their defences. The announcement was timed to a visit to both countries by Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach and carried endorsements from President Cyril Ramaphosa and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Mastercard tied the initiative to commitments made to the South African government during the G20 meetings in Johannesburg last year and to recent talks in Abuja. Its first-year offering centres on a cyber-risk analysis covering up to 50 organisations and an Africa-focused threat-intelligence feed from Recorded Future – a US$2.65-billion threat intelligence firm Mastercard bought in December 2024. The centre is another step in Mastercard’s expansion from a card payments network into security and intelligence services – capabilities it increasingly sells alongside the transactions it already processes, with one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies as the proving ground. Mastercard said it has invested more than $12.6-billion in cybersecurity since 2018, a figure it did not break down. On the threat picture, Mastercard said South Africa is the continent’s most-targeted market, accounting for about 29% of ransomware attacks and 40% of phishing incidents in Africa, with only an estimated 35% of incidents reported. It put Africa’s digital economy on course to reach $1.5-trillion by 2030.
