As Nigerians, we should all in one unison, discard this call for protest at first hearing. Having witnessed at fore front, the terrors of "ENDSARS" protest in 2021 which brought the country down on its knees, no Nigerian should ever wish to witness this calamity again completely. WHAT IS THE CRY OF NIGERIANS ?? Mega Economic disaster, brought about by the removal of fuel subsidy, has left so many Nigerians with a portfolio of difficulties in ever increasing daily living costs. Even our once enjoyable fuel priced, at N450 per litre which seemed a lot little easy difficult nowadays it is either N850 a litre, at most 1000 black market price therefore, the suffering is too much. Federal Government on it's own effort, has tried to alleviate the economy through cash policies of grants and Loans to Nigerians, but this good gesture continues to linger unperturbedly Inadequate to cover the spread. Regardless of the increase in our Nation Minimum Wage to record worthy N70,000 many Nigerians continue to be without unemployment in such a way that they may not be shortlisted to be among those on the minimum wage payroll. At this moment of Empirical Literary illiteracy, it is in my well experienced wisdom to say"Protest"will constitute a great disaster to our National discipline. Having witness firsthand what happened that day at the Lekki toll gate, we should reject any thought of protest because we will only be putting ourselves on a keg of gun powder. It will be in the interest of the FG, to develop and further promote more cityzen beneficial programs, that will alleviate the sufferings of Nigerian Cityzens so that national coherety can remain sustainably adequate. Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in the 2023 election, has described the death of Ohanaeze Ndigbo President -General, Mr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as shocking. The former governor of Anambra expressed his sadness over the demise of the Ohanaeze president on his X handle on Friday. Obi said he was a bridge builder who would be remembered for so many positives. “I am greatly disheartened by the death of an elder statesman and President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has said it understands what Nigerians are facing because of the state of the nation’s economy, but warned against embarking on unrest, saying that is not going to provide any solution to the problems at hand. Also, the student body has called on those behind the planned protest to come out in the open and stop hiding their identities, adding that it is necessary for Nigerians to interrogate their motives for the planned action. According to the National President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, in a statement on Wednesday, there is need to have a clear assessment of tbe situation and the necessary steps to take instead of embarking on mob action. The body also assured that Nigerian students would not be part of any step or action to set the nation on fire, noting that cutting off the head is not the antidote for headache. “The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) found it necessary to address the pressing concerns and burning contemporary issues affecting our beloved country and, most importantly, the student community. “Firstly, NANS acknowledges the significant hardship being experienced by citizens across Nigeria due to the implementation of recent reforms and policies by the government. These measures, though aimed at steering our nation towards sustainable development, have undoubtedly brought about economic challenges that have impacted every Nigerian household. We understand the frustrations and difficulties the citizens are facing, and we are deeply empathetic to the plight of all Nigerians. “However, we must remain steadfast and patient. The transformation we all desire is not an overnight process. It requires collective resilience and perseverance. We will not allow those with hidden agenda and identity to create artificial crisis that would disrupt our academic pursuit. We believe in constructive dialogue and engagement as the best means to address our grievances. “In this light, we want to express our profound appreciation to the government for the full commencement of the disbursement of the NELFUND students loan. This initiative in just about a year of this administration, is a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting education and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder our academic pursuits. “We are particularly pleased that the process has been streamlined, allowing eligible students to access loans without the need for intermediaries, thereby promoting transparency and efficiency. Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said the Dangote Refinery should be fully supported and not vilified adding the success of Dangote is linked to the success of Nigeria and Africa at large. Nigerians have called out the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority, Farouk Ahmed, for saying the diesel produced by the $20bn Dangote refinery is inferior to the ones imported into the country. It appears Ahmed incurred the wrath of Nigerians, who accused him of trying to demarket the refinery owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote. PUNCH Online reported earlier that Ahmed had told the Dangote refinery that the Federal Government would not stop the importation of petroleum products, saying Nigeria cannot depend on one refinery to feed the nation. The agency also said the diesel from the Dangote refinery contains a high sulphur content of about 1,000 parts per million. Reacting to allegations that the NMDPRA was giving licences to some traders to import dirty fuel into Nigeria, Ahmed argued that it was the Dangote fuel that had the larger content of sulphur. He revealed that the refinery, which has been selling diesel and aviation fuel in Nigeria for months, has not been licensed, stating that it is still at the pre-commissioning stage. "The claim by some media houses that there were steps to scuttle the Dangote refinery is not so. The Dangote refinery is still in the pre-commissioning stage. It has not been licensed yet; we haven’t licensed them yet. They are still in the pre-commissioning. I think they have about 45 per cent completion,” he declared. The NMDPRA boss warned that Nigeria cannot rely heavily on the Dangote refinery for its fuel supply. According to him, the refinery had requested the regulator to stop giving import licences to other marketers so as to be the only fuel supplier in Nigeria. “We cannot rely heavily on one refinery to feed the nation, because Dangote is requesting that we should suspend or stop importation of all petroleum products, especially AGO and direct all marketers to the refinery, that is not good for the nation in terms of energy security. And that is not good for the market, because of monopoly,” he stressed. Speaking about quality, he said, “So, in terms of quality, currently the AGO quality in terms of sulphur is the lowest as far as the West African requirement of 50 ppm is concerned. "Dangote refinery and some modular refineries, like Waltersmith refinery and Aradel refinery, are producing between 650 to 1,200ppm. So, in terms of quality, their product is much more inferior to the imported quality,” he alleged. While the Dangote Group has yet to react officially to the allegations from the chief executive, Nigerians have taken to social media to demand Ahmed’s removal by President Bola Tinubu An X user, Ohiozoje Augustine, said, “He should be immediately relieved of his duties to prevent the damaging impression that his actions were endorsed by those at the top.” @realist_waley opined: “It’s a very deliberate reckless talk that should warrant a query from the government. We are talking about promoting local production and exports to reduce demand for foreign exchange and strengthen the naira. He and the oil marketers are rather focused on their selfish interest to keep importing and depressing the naira. “You should be talking about competition for local producers instead of trying to manipulate Nigerians to focus on your propaganda that Dangote wants a monopoly. Well, it’s Nigeria that will suffer it because Dangote Refinery will just focus on exports.” Johnson Ayodeji asked, “Oga, is it Dangote that made the government-owned refineries moribund for decades? or has Dangote stopped any other person from building a refinery? The ousted Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume has said, he has accepted his recent removal by the National Working Committee, NWC of the ruling All Progressives Congress, through a letter written the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio last Wednesday in good faith. Senator Ndume who represents Borno South had accused Tinubu’ presidency of running a solo government despite hunger across the land, just as he had alleged in an interview with Arise TV last Thursday that Tinubu had been fenced off and caged by certain forces and expressed concerns over the lack of appreciable action by Tinubu in tackling poverty, insecurity, hunger, and other pressing issues. The APC in the letter read by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, also asked Ndume to resign from the party and join either the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP or any of the opposition parties. But Ndume who was in Maiduguri, and bereaved over the demise of his Sister In-law broke the silence to Journalists at his residence on Friday after the Third Day Funeral prayers. He said: ” I had wanted to react, but because I was mourning since the day I was illegally removed as Chief Whip of the Senate, I now deem it feet to do so. ” I am a Democrat and a realist, and someone who always says the truth no matter whose Ox is gored. “According to former US President, Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, and I quote ‘Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he stands by the country. Chappal Energies yesterday said it has acquired a 10 percent non-operated interest Sale and Purchase Agreement with Total Energies, EP, Nigeria Limited, onshore and shallow water assets within the Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, Joint Venture, JV, in the Niger Delta. It said, “TotalEnergies EP Nigeria will sell to Chappal Energies its 10% participating interest and all its rights and obligations in 15 licenses of SPDC JV, which are producing mainly oil. Production from these licenses represented approximately 14,000 barrels equivalent per day in Company share in 2023. “TotalEnergies EP Nigeria will also transfer to Chappal Energies its 10% participating interest in the 3 other licenses of SPDC JV which are producing mainly gas (OML 23, OML 28 and OML 77), while retaining full economic interest in these licenses which currently account for 40% of Nigeria LNG gas supply. Commenting on the achievement, the Managing Director of Chappal Energies, Mr. Ufoma Immanuel expressed optimism on the development noting that the acquisition marks a significant expansion in the Niger Delta, thereby diversifying its Nigeria footprint between the offshore and onshore basins. He added “Chappal Energies becomes the first Nigerian company to execute two significant transactions within a 12-month period. “The transaction is poised to bring substantial benefits to stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, local communities, and the national economy. The closing is subject to certain conditions, including all regulatory and contractual approvals. The transaction which is expected to close by December 31, 2024 includes a 10 percent interest in 15 Oil Mining Leases, OML, and two main export terminals in Nigeria, specifically the Forcados and Bonny terminals that are part of the SPDC JV. The detained top official of Binance Holdings Limited, Tigran Gambaryan, who is facing money laundering charge, on Tuesday, arrived the Federal High Court in Abuja on wheelchair. Cladded in a black T-shirt with blue jeans trousers, the defendant stood up from the wheelchair and walked slowly into the dock when his case was called up. It will be recalled that the Binance official had on May 23, collapsed in the court room. His lawyer, Mr. Mark Mordi, SAN, told trial Justice Emeka Nwite that the defendant fell ill inside the prison, adding that his health had continued to deteriorate. Following an application by counsel to the defendant, the trial judge, on July 5, ordered the Nigerian Correctional Service to release his medical certificate before July 16. Mordi, SAN, had prayed the court to summon the medical doctor at the health facility of Kuje Correctional Centre, to explain why he allegedly refused to furnish him with his client’s medical report, despite an earlier order of the court. The court had on May 17, declined to release the defendant on bail, pending the determination of the case against him. Justice Nwite said he was not convinced that the defendant, who is facing money laundering and terrorism financing charge, would be available to face his trial once he is released on bail. According to the court, the defendant failed to present sufficient materials to sway its discretion in his favour. The court held that based on affidavit evidence that was adduced by the EFCC, there was the likelihood that the defendant would jump bail. It, however, ordered accelerated hearing of the matter. The EFCC had on April 23, urged the court to allow the Binance official to remain in Kuje prison. The anti-graft agency maintained that it got a reliable intelligence that plans were afoot for the defendant to escape from custody and flee the country like his colleague. It told the court that the defendant had attempted to secure a brand new international passport from the embassy of the United States of America. EFCC further alleged that the defendant is an Armenian citizen by birth, saying there was a clear danger that he would jump bail if released from custody. The defendant had in an application he filed on April 4, relied on provisions of sections 157 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to plead for bail. He contended that the charge the EFCC preferred against him contained bailable offences, insisting that under the Constitution of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, he is presumed innocent of the allegations against him. His lawyer argued that the prosecution failed to place any evidence before the court to establish that his client posed a flight risk. “The prosecution has not presented any credible evidence to establish why the defendant should not be granted bail,” the defense lawyer submitted, adding that the claim that his client was planning to escape from the country was based “hearsay, unreliable and inadmissible evidence.” “My client is anxious and very desirous to prove his Innocence. This whole thing is that they want to use the defendant as a leavrage to obtain information from his employer. That is basically what this case is all about. “This is purely a state sanctioned hostage taking,” the defence counsel added. He, therefore, prayed the court to grant the defendant bail and stipulate conditions that would ensure his attendance to his trial While opposing the bail application, EFCC’s counsel, Mr. Iheanacho, drew attention of the court to the fact that the defendant’s colleague escaped from lawful custody. “There was an attempt by this defendant to procure another travelling document even when he was aware that his passport was in custody of the state. The Vice President, Oil and Gas, at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, has accused International Oil Companies, IOCs, in Nigeria of doing everything to frustrate the survival of Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals. He said the IOCs were deliberately and wilfully frustrating the refinery’s efforts to buy local crude by jerking up high premium price above the market price, thereby forcing it to import crude from countries as far as United States, with its attendant high costs. Speaking to a group of Energy Editors at a one-day training programme organised by the Dangote Group, Edwin also lamented the activity of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, in granting licences indiscriminately to marketers to import dirty refined products into the country. He said: “The Federal Government issued 25 licences to build refineries and we are the only one that delivered on promise. In effect, we deserve every support from the government. It is good to note that from the start of production, more than 3.5 billion litres, which represents 90 per cent of our production, have been exported. "We are calling on the Federal Government and regulators to give us the necessary support in order to create jobs and prosperity for the nation. “While the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, is trying its best to allocate the crude for us, the IOCs are deliberately and willfully frustrating our efforts to buy the local crude. ‘’It will be recalled that NUPRC, recently met with crude oil producers as well as refineries owners in Nigeria in a bid to ensure full adherence to Domestic Crude Oil Supply enunciated under section 109(2) of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA. “It seems the IOCs’ objective is to ensure that our Petroleum Refinery fails. It is either they are deliberately asking for ridiculous/humongous premium or, they simply state that crude is not available. "At some point, we paid $6 over and above the market price. This has forced us to reduce our output as well as import crude from countries as far as the US, increasing our cost of production" It appears the objective of the IOCs is to ensure Nigeria remains a country which exports crude oil and imports refined petroleum products. They (IOCs) are keen on exporting the raw materials to their home countries, creating employment and wealth for their countries, adding to their GDP, and dumping the expensive refined products into Nigeria, thus making us to be dependent on imported products. ‘’It is the same strategy the multinationals have been adopting in every commodity, making Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa to be facing unemployment and poverty, while they create wealth for themselves at our expense. ‘’This is exploitation – pure and simple. Unfortunately, the country is also playing into their hands by continuing to issue import licences at the expense of our economy and at the cost of the health of Nigerians who are exposed to carcinogenic products. “In spite of the fact that we are producing and bringing out diesel into the market, complying with ECOWAS regulations and standards, licences are being issued, in large quantities, to traders who are buying the extremely high sulphur diesel from Russia and dumping it in the Nigerian market. "Since the US, EU and UK imposed a price cap scheme from February 5, 2023, on Russian petroleum products, a large number of vessels are waiting near Togo with Russian ultra-high sulphur diesel and, they are being purchased and dumped into the Nigerian market. “In fact, some of the European countries were so alarmed about the carcinogenic effect of the extra high sulphur diesel being dumped into the Nigerian market that countries like Belgium and the Netherlands imposed a ban on such fuel being exported from its country into West Africa recently. ‘’It is sad that the country is giving import licences for such dirty diesel to be imported into Nigeria, when we have more than adequate petroleum refining capacity locally… ‘’It would be recalled that in May, Belgium and Netherland adopted new quality standards to halt the export of cheap, low-quality fuels to West Africa, harmonising its standards with those of the European Union. ‘’These measures synchronise fuel export standards with the European domestic market, specifically targeting diesel and petrol with high sulphur and chemical content. Historically, these fuels, with sulphur content reaching up to 10,000 ppm, were exported at reduced rates to countries lsuch as Nigeria and other West African consumers. Belgium’s Minister of Environment, Zakia Khattabi, announced that his country followed the Netherland, which in April 2023, also prohibited the export of low-quality petrol and diesel to West Africa via the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. ‘’Khattabi emphasised that the Netherlands’ decision to restrict dirty fuel exports had redirected the trade to Belgium, now used by oil producers and traders to export gasoline with excessively high levels of benzene and sulphur. “He said for far too long, toxic fuels have been departing from Belgium to destinations, including Africa. They cause extremely poor air quality in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon and are even carcinogenic. ‘’In September 2017, an investigation by an international organisation, Public Eye, revealed that polluted and toxic fuels were being exported on a large scale from the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam for export to African markets. As much as a quarter of the petrol and diesel available in West Africa originates from the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp. These fuels contain sulphur and other pollutants, such as cancer-causing benzene, in quantities up to 400 times the limits permitted in Europe. The Netherlands and Belgium were enjoined to enforce regulations to shield millions of Africans from exposure to toxic fuels. ‘’The decision of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, to grant licenses indiscriminately for the importation of dirty diesel and aviation fuel has made the Dangote refinery to expand into foreign markets. ‘’The refinery has recently exported diesel and aviation fuel to Europe and other parts of the world. The same industry players fought us for crashing the price of diesel and aviation fuel, but our aim, as I have said earlier, is to grow our economy.’’ He noted that because the refinery met the international standards as well as complied with stringent guidelines and regulations to protect the local environment, it had been able to export its products to Europe and other parts of the world. While appealing to the federal government and the National Assembly to urgently intervene for speedy implementation of the PIA and to ensure the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians were protected, he said: “Recently, the government of Ghana, through legislation, has banned the importation of highly contaminated diesel and PMS into the country. "It is regrettable that in Nigeria, import licences are granted, despite knowing that we have the capacity to produce nearly double the amount of products needed in Nigeria and even export the surplus.
