As Nigerians, we should all in one unison, discard this call for protest at first hearing. Having witnessed at fore front, the terrors of "ENDSARS" protest in 2021 which brought the country down on its knees, no Nigerian should ever wish to witness this calamity again completely.

WHAT IS THE CRY OF NIGERIANS ??

Mega Economic disaster, brought about by the removal of fuel subsidy, has left so many Nigerians with a portfolio of difficulties in ever increasing daily living costs.

Even our once enjoyable fuel priced, at N450 per litre which seemed a lot little easy difficult nowadays it is either N850 a litre, at most 1000 black market price therefore, the suffering is too much.

Federal Government on it's own effort, has tried to alleviate the economy through cash policies of grants and Loans to Nigerians, but this good gesture continues to linger unperturbedly Inadequate to cover the spread.

Regardless of the increase in our Nation Minimum Wage to record worthy N70,000 many Nigerians continue to be without unemployment in such a way that they may not be shortlisted to be among those on the minimum wage payroll.

At this moment of Empirical Literary illiteracy, it is in my well experienced wisdom to say"Protest"will constitute a great disaster to our National discipline. Having witness firsthand what happened that day at the Lekki toll gate, we should reject any thought of protest because we will only be putting ourselves on a keg of gun powder.

It will be in the interest of the FG, to develop and further promote more cityzen beneficial programs, that will alleviate the sufferings of Nigerian Cityzens so that national coherety can remain sustainably adequate.

Less than one week to the commencement of the nationwide "Day of Rage" protest, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development has announced the relaunch of the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF).

In the announcement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the ministry invited Nigerian young entrepreneurs with what they tagged "a vision for the future", to apply for the fund.

The Ministry which had last posted something on its X account on December 28, 2023, said that revealed that N110billion fund had been approved and was dedicated to empowering youth in priority sectors to drive economic growth.

Ahead of the proposed nationwide protest, the Federal Capital Territory police command has deployed a total of 4,200 policemen across the nooks and crannies of the nation’s capital.

The command also announced the deployment of explosive ordinance device experts at various strategic locations.

The command in a statement on Friday by its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the deployment was to ensure public safety, protection of protesters and to prevent the protests from being hijacked by non-state actors.

She added that there would be raids on identified black spots, uncompleted buildings/shanties, and stop and search operations among others in collaboration with sister security agencies.

She said, “The FCT Police Command, in anticipation of the planned nationwide protest by some human rights activists and Nigerian youths to publicly express their displeasure over hunger and hardship, has proactively deployed material and human resources across the nooks and crannies of the nation’s capital.

“The proactive deployment, which is aimed at ensuring public safety, protecting protesters, and preventing protests from being hijacked by non-state actors, is characterised by visibility policing, the deployment of explosive ordnance device experts and personnel at various strategic locations, raids on identified black spots, uncompleted buildings/shanties, stop-and-search operations, vehicular and foot patrols, and synergy with sister security agencies.”

Adeh noted that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, warned that the destruction of public and private properties would not be tolerated during the protest.

She said, “The Commissioner of Police FCT, while acknowledging the right of residents to protest, advises that it should be peaceful.

"The CP vows to resist all forms of violent protest and lawlessness, as the police will not be stampeded into allowing the destruction of public and private properties or loss of lives.”


Adeh urged residents to be vigilant and take advantage of the police emergency lines to report suspicious activities.

The former governor of Anambra expressed his sadness over the demise of the Ohanaeze president on his X handle on Friday.

Obi said he was a bridge builder who would be remembered for so many positives.

“I am greatly disheartened by the death of an elder statesman and President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

"The devastating reports of his death have left all who knew him heartbroken.

“He was not just a father to many, but a bridge builder who remained committed to the peaceful coexistence of the nation,” he said.

Obi said that Iwuanyanwu was undoubtedly a patriotic Nigerian whose desire for justice, equity, progress and development of the nation transcended tribal boundaries.

"He was one of those revered father figures, who had always given me useful advice.

“He promised me that he would soon be alright to continue with his contributions to the progress of the nation. I continued to pray for his quick and full recovery.

“I sincerely condole with his immediate family, the Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, and the entire nation over the death of this revered patriarch,”he said.

Obi prayed that God should grant us all the fortitude to bear his sad loss and grant him eternal rest.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has said it understands what Nigerians are facing because of the state of the nation’s economy, but warned against embarking on unrest, saying that is not going to provide any solution to the problems at hand.

Also, the student body has called on those behind the planned protest to come out in the open and stop hiding their identities, adding that it is necessary for Nigerians to interrogate their motives for the planned action.

According to the National President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, in a statement on Wednesday, there is need to have a clear assessment of tbe situation and the necessary steps to take instead of embarking on mob action.

The body also assured that Nigerian students would not be part of any step or action to set the nation on fire, noting that cutting off the head is not the antidote for headache.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) found it necessary to address the pressing concerns and burning contemporary issues affecting our beloved country and, most importantly, the student community.

“Firstly, NANS acknowledges the significant hardship being experienced by citizens across Nigeria due to the implementation of recent reforms and policies by the government. These measures, though aimed at steering our nation towards sustainable development, have undoubtedly brought about economic challenges that have impacted every Nigerian household. We understand the frustrations and difficulties the citizens are facing, and we are deeply empathetic to the plight of all Nigerians.

“However, we must remain steadfast and patient. The transformation we all desire is not an overnight process. It requires collective resilience and perseverance. We are optimistic that in no distant future, the positive outcomes of these reforms will become evident. Citizens patience and understanding are vital during this period of adjustment.

“NANS also wishes to categorically distance Nigerian students from any protest against the government at this time. We have observed that certain individuals and groups are attempting to exploit the current economic situation to incite unrest. This is evident in the fact that the organizers of the protests have chosen to hide their identities while making inflammatory statements that are capable of engendering chaos. They are simply economic saboteurs because their aim is to add to the current economic realities facing Nigerians for selfish political gains.

"The over 40.1 million nigerian students will not be cajoled into the grand conspiracy of this obscured individuals in the name of “Ending bad governance” if they themselves cannot pass a simple integrity test by revealing themselves and openly engaging us in open debates, rather than lurking around our campuses in an attempt to railroad the students constituency into execution of their hidden agenda. The students have enjoyed an uninterrupted academic calendar in over a year now, the organized labour, including the academic staff unions are all being engaged by the federal government at different stages of dialogue to ensure that the uninterrupted streak in our academic pursuit is sustained. We will not allow those with hidden agenda and identity to create artificial crisis that would disrupt our academic pursuit.

We believe in constructive dialogue and engagement as the best means to address our grievances.

“In this light, we want to express our profound appreciation to the government for the full commencement of the disbursement of the NELFUND students loan. This initiative in just about a year of this administration, is a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting education and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder our academic pursuits.

“We are particularly pleased that the process has been streamlined, allowing eligible students to access loans without the need for intermediaries, thereby promoting transparency and efficiency. We would ensure that we allow the open channels of engagement with the government and hold them to task on their other policies to revive the economy and ameliorate the hardship in the land.

“We call on all Nigerian students to focus on their academic activities. Your education is your greatest asset, and it is crucial that you do not allow external distractions to derail your progress. Stay committed to your studies, and avoid being swayed by those who seek to use you for their own agendas.

"We also call on parents to play an active role in guiding and monitoring their children. And ensure they remain focused on their academic goals and refrain from participating in any protest that might jeopardize their future or disrupt the peace and stability of our nation.

“Furthermore, the NANS national leadership has set up a coordinating, monitoring and intelligence gathering (CMIG) team across the zonal, states and campus structures, to identify those who have over some couple of weeks, been lurking around our campuses
to mobilize students for their selfish and disruptive protest"

“We have decided to identify, compile their names and blacklist them as regressive agents who are actively out to not only incite violence, but also disrupt the smooth running of our academic calendar.

"The NANS president and national executives, in conjunction with the zonal coordinators, will soon embark on a zonal sensitization tour of the six zones to engage with our Students and inaugurate the CMIG, which would report directly the situation room at the NANS national Head quarters.

“Finally, NANS remains dedicated to advocating for the welfare and interests of Nigerian students. We will continue to engage with the government and other stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the challenges we face. Together, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and for Nigeria.”

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said the Dangote Refinery should be fully supported and not vilified adding the success of Dangote is linked to the success of Nigeria and Africa at large.

He said this in a series of posts on his X handle on Tuesday, July 23 noting that the conflict between Dangote Industries and some government agencies are deeply troubling.

He wrote:
“The recent conflicts between Dangote Industries and some government agencies are deeply troubling. This issue transcends political affiliations and personal grievances. It is fundamentally about Nigeria’s economy, future, and the well-being of its citizens. Given Alhaji Dangote's significant contributions to Nigeria, it is crucial that these disputes are resolved swiftly. Government agencies should be directed to offer the necessary support for the seamless launch and operation of the Dangote Refinery and its associated enterprises. The refinery has the potential to generate approximately $21 billion in annual revenue and create over 100,000 jobs, with numerous additional positive impacts on the economy.

“Its strategic importance in addressing Nigeria’s fuel crisis, boosting foreign exchange earnings, and fostering economic growth cannot be overstated. The refinery is too vital to fail and must not be hindered, considering its crucial role in our national welfare.

“The Federal Government and its agencies need to recognize the significance of Dangote’s contributions. Alhaji Dangote is not just a businessman; he is a national and African brand symbolizing patriotism, commitment, and impactful entrepreneurship.

Out of their envy they force him to import crude while we have it in abundance being shipped out of this country by mafias. Thank God for Dangote's refinery as its presence will make other refineries in Nigeria to function. It is now that i somewhat desire a northern president for we saw how Buhari supported Dangote, any northerner as president would do the same for right now it's now a government of Nepotism. Actually, price of fuel will come down in the future as long as we now have Dangote.

Nigerians have called out the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority, Farouk Ahmed, for saying the diesel produced by the $20bn Dangote refinery is inferior to the ones imported into the country.

It appears Ahmed incurred the wrath of Nigerians, who accused him of trying to demarket the refinery owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.

PUNCH Online reported earlier that Ahmed had told the Dangote refinery that the Federal Government would not stop the importation of petroleum products, saying Nigeria cannot depend on one refinery to feed the nation.

The agency also said the diesel from the Dangote refinery contains a high sulphur content of about 1,000 parts per million.

Reacting to allegations that the NMDPRA was giving licences to some traders to import dirty fuel into Nigeria, Ahmed argued that it was the Dangote fuel that had the larger content of sulphur.

He revealed that the refinery, which has been selling diesel and aviation fuel in Nigeria for months, has not been licensed, stating that it is still at the pre-commissioning stage.

"The claim by some media houses that there were steps to scuttle the Dangote refinery is not so. The Dangote refinery is still in the pre-commissioning stage. It has not been licensed yet; we haven’t licensed them yet. They are still in the pre-commissioning. I think they have about 45 per cent completion,” he declared.

The NMDPRA boss warned that Nigeria cannot rely heavily on the Dangote refinery for its fuel supply.

According to him, the refinery had requested the regulator to stop giving import licences to other marketers so as to be the only fuel supplier in Nigeria.

“We cannot rely heavily on one refinery to feed the nation, because Dangote is requesting that we should suspend or stop importation of all petroleum products, especially AGO and direct all marketers to the refinery, that is not good for the nation in terms of energy security. And that is not good for the market, because of monopoly,” he stressed.

Speaking about quality, he said, “So, in terms of quality, currently the AGO quality in terms of sulphur is the lowest as far as the West African requirement of 50 ppm is concerned.

"Dangote refinery and some modular refineries, like Waltersmith refinery and Aradel refinery, are producing between 650 to 1,200ppm. So, in terms of quality, their product is much more inferior to the imported quality,” he alleged.

While the Dangote Group has yet to react officially to the allegations from the chief executive, Nigerians have taken to social media to demand Ahmed’s removal by President Bola Tinubu

An X user, Ohiozoje Augustine, said, “He should be immediately relieved of his duties to prevent the damaging impression that his actions were endorsed by those at the top.”

We are talking about promoting local production and exports to reduce demand for foreign exchange and strengthen the naira. Sola Solarin claimed, “This statement is self-indicting. If Dangote has not been licensed, why is he being allowed to sell diesel? If Dangote can meet our local needs, why do we need to import? We can restrict import without compromising energy security.”

The Oyo state government is confident that the recently approved N70,000 minimum wage by the federal government will not be too challenging to implement.

Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the chief press secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, confirmed this to The Nation on Friday, July 19.

Olanrewaju recalled that during the 2024 Workers Day celebration, the governor had pledged to pay whatever the national minimum wage would be set at.

He emphasised that the governor’s promise remains firm and noted that the state currently pays a minimum wage of N30,000 plus a N25,000 wage award, totaling N55,000 without any outstanding payments.

He concluded that increasing the payment from N55,000 to N70,000 would not be too difficult for the state government.

Olanrewaju said: “At the event marking Workers’ Day on May 1, 2024, Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, promised to pay whatever the national minimum wage is.

“That promise stands. So, Oyo will pay the new minimum wage.

“The current minimum wage in Oyo is N30,000 but since October 2023 the state has been paying N25,000 wage award.

“This means the state has been paying N55,000 minimum wage since October last year without owing a single month. Transiting from N55,000 to N70,000 will not be too herculean.”

The ousted Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume has said, he has accepted his recent removal by the
National Working Committee, NWC of the ruling All Progressives Congress, through a letter written the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio last Wednesday in good faith.

Senator Ndume who represents Borno South had accused Tinubu’ presidency of running a solo government despite hunger across the land, just as he had alleged in an interview with Arise TV last Thursday that Tinubu had been fenced off and caged by certain forces and expressed concerns over the lack of appreciable action by Tinubu in tackling poverty, insecurity, hunger, and other pressing issues.

The APC in the letter read by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, also asked Ndume to resign from the party and join either the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP or any of the opposition parties.

But Ndume who was in Maiduguri, and bereaved over the demise of his Sister In-law broke the silence to Journalists at his residence on Friday after the Third Day Funeral prayers.

He said: ” I had wanted to react, but because I was mourning since the day I was illegally removed as Chief Whip of the Senate, I now deem it feet to do so.

” I am a Democrat and a realist, and someone who always says the truth no matter whose Ox is gored.

“According to former US President, Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, and I quote ‘Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise, he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else’.

Therefore, I do not regret what I said during my interview with Arise TV, I thank all Nigerians who took to their Social Media Platforms and groups who issued a press statement aligning with my statement regarding excruciating hunger and insecurity under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

"Secondly, the NWC of our great party, APC recommended to the Senate that I should be removed which they did, I took that as an Act of God, because, it is God that gave me that mandate as Chief Whip, so I bear no grudges about what transpired, after all I do not contest to be the Chief Whip or to be the Vice Chairman of the Appropriation Committee. Rather, I contested to be a senator representing Southern Borno and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"So is not that am desperate, I am over 64 years now, and I thank God. As for the Chairman Senate Committee on Tourism offered to me, I want to say that, I am not a Tourist and not good in Tourism, as it is, I have spent over 10 years without going to any Foreign countries, I have never been to United Kingdom, even United States of America which I went was when I was schooling there.

” I was happy yesterday when the President approved the minimum wage to N70,000 only. Is a good move, but the minimum wage is still minimal compared to a 50kg bag of rice which costs over N70,000.

“On the advice(s) that I am free to join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP or any political party of my choice, I want to reiterate that, I am one of the Founding members of the APC. The result of a medical examination conducted on the 17-year-old girl allegedly raped by a police officer at the Area H Command in the Ogudu area of the state has been concluded.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to PUNCH Online on Friday.

Hundeyin said the result had been handed over to the police for onward investigation into the incident.

He said, “The test result. It has been handed over to the police and the investigation has continued.”


Hundeyin who did not disclose the outcome of the test added, “There will be another update in no distant time.”

Checks by our correspondent revealed that the test was processed at the Mirabel Centre.

The police image maker, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that the officer whose identity was yet to be disclosed had been taken into custody.

PUNCH City Round had reported on Saturday that the victim alleged that she was raped inside the Ogudu Police Station in the Ojota area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that the officer had promised to help the teenager retrieve her phone, which had been taken by ‘one chance’ robbers on June 16 while she, her grandmother, and her siblings were returning from Ikeja.

The suspect reportedly overheard the teenager recounting her ordeal to her mother at her shop and offered to help track her missing phone and take her statement.

The victim also noted that she was invited into the suspect’s office in the guise of getting her phone but the suspect carried out the alleged act.

The mother of the victim, Aramide Olupona, had disclosed that her daughter began bleeding a day after the assault and was taken to the Mirabel Centre, adding that the incident was also reported to the authorities.

Olupona, however, accused the police of trying to bury the case, saying, “The suspect’s wife and the rest of his family have come to my shop to plead with me saying he would soon retire, but what about my daughter who was raped? Is it because I am a poor woman?”

Reacting, Hundeyin added that the alleged act contravened the code of conduct of the police and therefore assured the victim’s family and the general public that there was no attempt to cover up the incident.

He said, “The Lagos State Police Command has placed under arrest one of its personnel accused of defiling a 17-year-old girl. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Adegoke Fayoade, has directed a full-scale and thorough investigation into the allegation.

"The command assures the public that there is no attempt at a cover-up as such hideous acts are at variance with the code of conduct and professional ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.

“To this end, CP Fayoade once again assures Nigerians that the officer will be dealt with under police regulations and the law if found culpable.”

The gun battle which was captured in a viral video seen on X by SaharaReporters was learnt to have occurred between the gunmen said to be the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and the deputy governor's convoy.

This was also confirmed in a press statement issued by Shaibu’s media team dated July 18, 2024.

The statement reads: “The Edo State Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, Thursday afternoon, escaped an assassination attempt on his life in Benin City the state capital.

“The attempt on the life of the deputy governor and other VIPs, including supporters who were at the Benin Airport to receive him, was carried out at the Airport exit gate roundabout, near Faith Mediplex.

“The attack orchestrated by state-sponsored thugs and members of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), witnessed sporadic shootings that left the cheering crowd who had come to welcome the reinstated deputy governor back to Benin, scampering for their dear lives seeking protection from the flying stray bullets.


“However, it took the effort and intervention of security officers to rescue the situation, leaving the state-sponsored thugs and local vilgiantees to run from the spot and allowing the rallying crowd to reconvene.

“Sadly, one gallant police officer attached to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, whose rode alongside the deputy governor's convoy, lost his life in the unprovoked brutal attack, with several officers and supporters wounded,”

A statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, indicated that President Tinubu also pledged to find ways to help the private sector and sub-national entities meet the minimum wage requirement.

Following the meeting, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, briefed the media and confirmed that the unions had accepted the offer.

Simi Ajaero, accompanied by Comrade Festus Usifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other representatives of Nigerian workers, stated that the unions had accepted the offer because there were other incentives attached.

Ajaero, who spoke to State House reporters after the meeting with the President, said the unions agreed to the offer because of other incentives attached.

He said another reason for accepting the offer is because “ the President promised a review every three years as against what obtained in the past.”

President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days.

Chappal Energies yesterday said it has acquired a 10 percent non-operated interest Sale and Purchase Agreement with Total Energies, EP, Nigeria Limited, onshore and shallow water assets within the Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, Joint Venture, JV, in the Niger Delta.

It said, “TotalEnergies EP Nigeria will sell to Chappal Energies its 10% participating interest and all its rights and obligations in 15 licenses of SPDC JV, which are producing mainly oil.

Production from these licenses represented approximately 14,000 barrels equivalent per day in Company share in 2023. “TotalEnergies EP Nigeria will also transfer to Chappal Energies its 10% participating interest in the 3 other licenses of SPDC JV which are producing mainly gas (OML 23, OML 28 and OML 77), while retaining full economic interest in these licenses which currently account for 40% of Nigeria LNG gas supply.

Commenting on the achievement, the Managing Director of Chappal Energies, Mr. Ufoma Immanuel expressed optimism on the development noting that the acquisition marks a significant expansion in the Niger Delta, thereby diversifying its Nigeria footprint between the offshore and onshore basins.

He added “Chappal Energies becomes the first Nigerian company to execute two significant transactions within a 12-month period.

“The transaction is poised to bring substantial benefits to stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, local communities, and the national economy. The closing is subject to certain conditions, including all regulatory and contractual approvals.

The transaction which is expected to close by December 31, 2024 includes a 10 percent interest in 15 Oil Mining Leases, OML, and two main export terminals in Nigeria, specifically the Forcados and Bonny terminals that are part of the SPDC JV.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) says it will follow to the end and ensure justice for the 17-year-old girl allegedly defiled by a police officer at Ogudu Police Station.

The agency’s spokesperson, Mrs Joke Ladenegan-Oginni, stated this in a post shared on its X handle at @LSdsva on Wednesday.

“The agency was notified of a distressing incident involving a police officer who was alleged to have defiled a child in a police station.

“Upon receiving the report, the DSVA immediately facilitated the necessary referrals for comprehensive medical and psychosocial support, which were promptly provided to the survivor.

“This matter was immediately escalated to the Gender Desk Department of the Lagos State Police Command, ” she said.

Ladenegan-Oginni said that a painstaking investigation was ongoing into the matter.

“We wish to assure the public that a meticulous investigation is currently underway.

“We trust in the leadership of the Lagos State Police Command to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into this incident.

“We believe that this is crucial in maintaining public trust.


“We reiterate the Lagos State Government’s Zero-Tolerance Policy for all forms of domestic and sexual violence and reaffirm our dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of all survivors, ” [/b]she said.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, sitting at Maitama yesterday declined request by the former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who is facing trial, to be allowed to travel abroad for medical examination.

The court, in a ruling delivered by trial Justice Hamza Mu’azu, held that the erstwhile CBN boss failed to adduce any evidence to establish that he was suffering from any life-threatening ailment.

It further held that no medical report was produced to support the claim that the defendant was ill, noting that he was currently facing multiple charges before different courts.

“It is an exercise of the court’s discretion to allow the defendant to go on a medical trip. The defendant through his counsel undertook an affidavit to produce him in court, and his offences are bailable and where there is need for the court to grant him the application to travel, the court should do so, but as it is, I failed to see any letter of medication in the defendant’s applications.

"As it stands, I cannot exercise my discretion to allow the defendant to travel out of the shores of the country, moreover he is also standing trial in three other courts, therefore the application has failed, and hereby dismissed,” Justice Mu’azu held.

Emefiele had through his team of lawyers, approached the court, begging it to permit him to visit the United Kingdom for medical check-up.

He specifically prayed the court to release to him, the international passport he surrendered as part of the conditions upon which be was released on bail.

However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which is prosecuting him, opposed the application.

The anti-graft agency, through its lawyer, Muhammad Omeiza, filed a counter-affidavit to challenge the request. It argued that no medical report was tendered before the court by the defendant.

More so, the prosecution contended that the defendant failed to show that no hospital in Nigeria could handle his medical needs.

It maintained that since Emefiele submitted his international passport to secure his freedom from detention, releasing same to him would amount to a variation of his bail condition.

While insisting that the ex-CBN governor posed a flight risk, the EFCC, added: “The defendant has co-conspirators all over the world.

“One Anita and Tony are all aides of the defendant who are currently in the UK. The defendant might be tempted to jump bail because he is standing trial in three different courts.”


However, Emefiele dismissed EFCC’s allegation as speculative, stressing that the agency had the capacity to secure his arrest from the UK should he refuse to return back for continuation of his trial.

The court, in its ruling, upheld EFCC’s position and dismissed the application as lacking in merit.

Emefiele is answering to a 20-count amended charges bordering on conferment of corrupt advantages, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery and obtaining by false pretences to the tune of $6,230,000.00.

The detained top official of Binance Holdings Limited, Tigran Gambaryan, who is facing money laundering charge, on Tuesday, arrived the Federal High Court in Abuja on wheelchair.

Cladded in a black T-shirt with blue jeans trousers, the defendant stood up from the wheelchair and walked slowly into the dock when his case was called up.

It will be recalled that the Binance official had on May 23, collapsed in the court room.

His lawyer, Mr. Mark Mordi, SAN, told trial Justice Emeka Nwite that the defendant fell ill inside the prison, adding that his health had continued to deteriorate.

Following an application by counsel to the defendant, the trial judge, on July 5, ordered the Nigerian Correctional Service to release his medical certificate before July 16.

Mordi, SAN, had prayed the court to summon the medical doctor at the health facility of Kuje Correctional Centre, to explain why he allegedly refused to furnish him with his client’s medical report, despite an earlier order of the court.

The court had on May 17, declined to release the defendant on bail, pending the determination of the case against him.

Justice Nwite said he was not convinced that the defendant, who is facing money laundering and terrorism financing charge, would be available to face his trial once he is released on bail.

According to the court, the defendant failed to present sufficient materials to sway its discretion in his favour.

The court held that based on affidavit evidence that was adduced by the EFCC, there was the likelihood that the defendant would jump bail.

It, however, ordered accelerated hearing of the matter. The EFCC had on April 23, urged the court to allow the Binance official to remain in Kuje prison.

The anti-graft agency maintained that it got a reliable intelligence that plans were afoot for the defendant to escape from custody and flee the country like his colleague.

It told the court that the defendant had attempted to secure a brand new international passport from the embassy of the United States of America.

EFCC further alleged that the defendant is an Armenian citizen by birth, saying there was a clear danger that he would jump bail if released from custody.

The defendant had in an application he filed on April 4, relied on provisions of sections 157 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to plead for bail.

He contended that the charge the EFCC preferred against him contained bailable offences, insisting that under the Constitution of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, he is presumed innocent of the allegations against him.

His lawyer argued that the prosecution failed to place any evidence before the court to establish that his client posed a flight risk.

“The prosecution has not presented any credible evidence to establish why the defendant should not be granted bail,” the defense lawyer submitted, adding that the claim that his client was planning to escape from the country was based “hearsay, unreliable and inadmissible evidence.”

“My client is anxious and very desirous to prove his Innocence. This whole thing is that they want to use the defendant as a leavrage to obtain information from his employer. That is basically what this case is all about.

“This is purely a state sanctioned hostage taking,” the defence counsel added.

He, therefore, prayed the court to grant the defendant bail and stipulate conditions that would ensure his attendance to his trial

While opposing the bail application, EFCC’s counsel, Mr. Iheanacho, drew attention of the court to the fact that the defendant’s colleague escaped from lawful custody.

“There was an attempt by this defendant to procure another travelling document even when he was aware that his passport was in custody of the state. He pretended as if the said passport was stolen.

Gambaryan was arrested and detained alongside his colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, over alleged involvement of their firm in money laundering and terrorism financing.

The Vice President, Oil and Gas, at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, has accused International Oil Companies, IOCs, in Nigeria of doing everything to frustrate the survival of Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals.

He said the IOCs were deliberately and wilfully frustrating the refinery’s efforts to buy local crude by jerking up high premium price above the market price, thereby forcing it to import crude from countries as far as United States, with its attendant high costs.

Speaking to a group of Energy Editors at a one-day training programme organised by the Dangote Group, Edwin also lamented the activity of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, in granting licences indiscriminately to marketers to import dirty refined products into the country.

He said: “The Federal Government issued 25 licences to build refineries and we are the only one that delivered on promise. In effect, we deserve every support from the government. It is good to note that from the start of production, more than 3.5 billion litres, which represents 90 per cent of our production, have been exported.

"We are calling on the Federal Government and regulators to give us the necessary support in order to create jobs and prosperity for the nation.

“While the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, is trying its best to allocate the crude for us, the IOCs are deliberately and willfully frustrating our efforts to buy the local crude.

‘’It will be recalled that NUPRC, recently met with crude oil producers as well as refineries owners in Nigeria in a bid to ensure full adherence to Domestic Crude Oil Supply enunciated under section 109(2) of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA.

“It seems the IOCs’ objective is to ensure that our Petroleum Refinery fails. It is either they are deliberately asking for ridiculous/humongous premium or, they simply state that crude is not available.

"At some point, we paid $6 over and above the market price. This has forced us to reduce our output as well as import crude from countries as far as the US, increasing our cost of production"

It appears the objective of the IOCs is to ensure Nigeria remains a country which exports crude oil and imports refined petroleum products. They (IOCs) are keen on exporting the raw materials to their home countries, creating employment and wealth for their countries, adding to their GDP, and dumping the expensive refined products into Nigeria, thus making us to be dependent on imported products.

‘’It is the same strategy the multinationals have been adopting in every commodity, making Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa to be facing
unemployment and poverty, while they create wealth for themselves at our expense.

‘’This is exploitation – pure and simple. Unfortunately, the country is also playing into their hands by continuing to issue import licences at the expense of our economy and at the cost of the health of Nigerians who are exposed to carcinogenic products.

“In spite of the fact that we are producing and bringing out diesel into the market, complying with ECOWAS regulations and standards, licences are being issued, in large quantities, to traders who are buying the extremely high sulphur diesel from Russia and dumping it in the Nigerian market.

"Since the US, EU and UK imposed a price cap scheme from February 5, 2023, on Russian petroleum products, a large number of vessels are waiting near Togo with Russian ultra-high sulphur diesel and, they are being purchased and dumped into the Nigerian market.

“In fact, some of the European countries were so alarmed about the carcinogenic effect of the extra high sulphur diesel being dumped into the Nigerian market that countries like Belgium and the Netherlands imposed a ban on such fuel being exported from its country into West Africa recently.

‘’It is sad that the country is giving import licences for such dirty diesel to be imported into Nigeria, when we have more than adequate petroleum refining capacity locally…

‘’It would be recalled that in May, Belgium and Netherland adopted new quality standards to halt the export of cheap, low-quality fuels to West Africa, harmonising its standards with those of the European Union.

‘’These measures synchronise fuel export standards with the European domestic market, specifically targeting diesel and petrol with high sulphur and chemical content. Historically, these fuels, with sulphur content reaching up to 10,000 ppm, were exported at reduced rates to countries lsuch as Nigeria and other West African consumers.

Belgium’s Minister of Environment, Zakia Khattabi, announced that his country followed the Netherland, which in April 2023, also prohibited the export of low-quality petrol and diesel to West Africa via the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

‘’Khattabi emphasised that the Netherlands’ decision to restrict dirty fuel exports had redirected the trade to Belgium, now used by oil producers and traders to export gasoline with excessively high levels of benzene and sulphur.

“He said for far too long, toxic fuels have been departing from Belgium to destinations, including Africa. They cause extremely poor air quality in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon and are even carcinogenic.

‘’In September 2017, an investigation by an international organisation, Public Eye, revealed that polluted and toxic fuels were being exported on a large scale from the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam for export to African markets.

As much as a quarter of the petrol and diesel available in West Africa originates from the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp. These fuels contain sulphur and other pollutants, such as cancer-causing benzene, in quantities up to 400 times the limits permitted in Europe. The Netherlands and Belgium were enjoined to enforce regulations to shield millions of Africans from exposure to toxic fuels.

‘’The decision of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, to grant licenses indiscriminately for the importation of dirty diesel and aviation fuel has made the Dangote refinery to expand into foreign markets.

‘’The refinery has recently exported diesel and aviation fuel to Europe and other parts of the world. The same industry players fought us for crashing the price of diesel and aviation fuel, but our aim, as I have said earlier, is to grow our economy.’’

He noted that because the refinery met the international standards as well as complied with stringent guidelines and regulations to protect the local environment, it had been able to export its products to Europe and other parts of the world.

While appealing to the federal government and the National Assembly to urgently intervene for speedy implementation of the PIA and to ensure the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians were protected, he said: “Recently, the government of Ghana, through legislation, has banned the importation of highly contaminated diesel and PMS into the country.

"It is regrettable that in Nigeria, import licences are granted, despite knowing that we have the capacity to produce nearly double the amount of products needed in Nigeria and even export the surplus. Since January 2021, ECOWAS regulations have prohibited the import of highly contaminated diesel into the region.”

The delivery date for the completion of the $700m Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben gas pipeline project, popularly called OB3, has been shifted from March 2024 to August, as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited announced its readiness to complete the facility.

On February 28, 2024, The PUNCH reported that the Federal Government had declared that the project would be completed in March this year, a project that commenced in 2016.

It announced this in February through the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, at the 7th Nigeria International Energy Summit in Abuja, where the minister described the OB3 gas pipeline as one of the biggest gas transmission systems in both Nigeria and Africa.

“I am highly elated to announce that going by the contractor estimates, the OB3 pipeline will be completed by March 2024 and the 42” 127km pipeline will supply 2BCF (two billion standard cubic feet) per day,”
Ekpo had stated.

But in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the spokesperson of NNPC, Olufemi Soneye, the oil firm declared that the project would be completed in August.

The Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC, Mele Kyari, confirmed this during an inspection tour of the OB3 pipeline River Niger Crossing operation at Aboh, Delta State, on Saturday, according to the statement.

By design, the OB3 gas pipeline is the interconnector which links the Eastern gas pipeline network to the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System in the West and the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano pipeline in the North.

The River Niger Crossing operation has been the major impediment to the completion of the strategic OB3 gas pipeline for over three years, NNPC stated.

This, it said, was due to the failure of the various technologies deployed to achieve the construction of the 48-inch pipe under the river bed between Ndoni in Rivers State and Aboh in Delta State.

It, however, noted that with the adoption of the Micro-Tunnelling/Direct Pipe Installation technology, the new contractors, Messrs HDD Thailand/Enikkom and Tunnelling Services Group (TSG), were making a headway with about 860mout of the 1,800m achieved so far.


Speaking after the inspection tour, Kyari expressed delight at the breakthrough, which signalled the imminent completion of the project.

He was quoted as saying, “This is a major project of monumental value to our country. What this means is that this is the only way we can deliver the gas revolution. I am very happy and convinced that, latest by the middle of August, we will complete this project. I have been assured of that by the project team.”

On the significance of the project, he said, “Once completed, we will see about 2.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas coming into our network. We believe that this will give our country a breathing space of demand, I am sure we can catch up with that kind of demand in the next one and a half years. We are happy that this will give us the platform to unleash the gas revolution in our country.”

Also speaking on the project during the tour, Ekpo expressed satisfaction with the pace of work at the OB3 River Niger Crossing operation.

“I was here last year and I saw the work that was going on. There was a promise that it would be completed by December last year. I took it with a doubt. But today, from what I can see, I am confident that by July or August, it will be completed and it will be commissioned by the President,” the minister stated.

The Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, said she was looking forward to the completion of the project having been assured by the technical team that the right technology had been found to resolve the complex challenges of the River Niger Crossing.

“As the minister and other speakers have said, we are looking forward to having this project deliver prosperity to Nigerians in the form of electricity and other areas,” Verheijen said

The Managing Director, Tunnel Service Group, one of the contractors to the project, Ingo Justen, who was on the ground to supervise the project at the request of the NNPC boss, expressed confidence that the current technology being applied in the execution of the project would lead to its speedy conclusion.

In a presentation, the Managing Director, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, Seyi Omotowa, disclosed that at the rate of progress with the new technology deployed, the River Niger Crossing operation, which is the only aspect of the OB3 Gas Pipeline Project left, would be achieved on schedule.

The estimated cost for constructing the OB3 gas pipeline is $700m. The project started sometime in 2016 and is also known as the East-West Pipeline.

It connects the Obiafu-Obrikom gas plant near Omuku, Rivers State, to Oben, Edo State and is to transport over two billion standard cubic feet of gas per day.

The Dangote Refinery is set to export a shipment of low-sulfur straight-run fuel oil (LSSR) from Nigeria to Singapore this week. The information is based on ship tracking data and market sources, indicating that this is the first time Africa’s largest refinery is entering the Asian market.

The shipment initiates a new trade route from the new refinery to Aisa, which reportedly lacks the low-sulfur fuel oil required for powering ships at Singapore, the world’s largest bunker hub

The $20 billion refinery can process about 650,000 barrels of petroleum products daily and is poised to be Africa’s largest and the world’s biggest single-train refinery when it reaches total capacity. The refinery has been touted as the solution to Nigeria and Africa’s petroleum product imports, especially petrol.

Dangote makes bold promise to Nigerians:

Chairman of Dangote Industries Aliko Dangote promised that Nigeria would not need to import petrol when PMS production begins in mid-July.

Reports say the Dangote refinery has shored up its LSSR exports, sending shipments to the Americas and Europe, according to data from Kpler and Vortexa.

The first Asian-bound shipment will arrive on Wednesday, July 26, 2024, aboard the Glencore-chartered vessel Front Brage and will deliver about 124,000 metric tons of LSSR to Singapore.

Market sources say the cargo was redirected to Asia due to weaker European demand. LSSR products from the Dangote refinery are priced against Rotterdam’s 0.5% LSFO quotes on a free-on-board basis. There is currently no pricing differential for the shipment. Another LSSR shipment from the refinery, about 157,000 tons, is expected to reach Singapore in July aboard the Stena Suede vessel. LSSR is always mixed with other fuels to create low-sulfur oil (LSFO) for bunkering or used as feedstock in various refinery processes.

The refinery began exporting petroleum products in February 2024 and bought crude oil from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) in December last year.

Africa’s largest oil refinery, Dangote Refinery, has moved the date of production of premium motor spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, from June to the middle of July.

The President and CEO of the refinery, Aliko Dangote, confirmed the new production date to newsmen at the $20 billion facility in Lagos on Monday.

Dangote mentioned that the change in date was due to a slight delay, prompting the shift from the originally proposed June to mid-July.

The CEO said the refinery will commence production of petrol between 10 and 15 of July, while supply to local marketers will commence from the third week of the same month.

“We had a bit of delay, but PMS will start coming out by 10 to 15 of July. But then we want to keep it in tank to make sure that it settles. So by third week of July, we’ll be able coming out to take it into the market,” Dangote said.

Backstory
Earlier, the Dangote refinery was expected to begin production and supply of petrol this month, according to different reports.

For instance, analyst at the Standard and Poor’s’ Global (S&P Global) Commodities Insights predicted that the refinery will start supply of petrol in the fourth quarter of this year, particularly in the month of June.

“We are starting to see signs of activities, but all eyes are on when we’ll start to see gasoline production will commence from that project. There is a significant amount of pressure from the Nigerian government for significant volume of that supply to be sent to the domestic market.

“In reality, when we see that start scale up is still subject to debate. Dangote has recently been espousing some punchy timelines. They have most recently been saying that they are looking to produce gasoline by May. But in reality, our analyst expect that would be something like the fourth quarter of this year in a more realistic timeline,” the analysts said.

Exportation of Jet Fuel
Meanwhile, the refinery has begun the supply of jet fuel and diesel to domestic marketers in the country.

In addition, the $20 billion facility started exporting its first jet fuel cargo to Europe.

The first shipment, loaded onto the vessel “Doric Breeze,” left the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos on May 27th and is now on its way to Rotterdam, Netherlands, as per data from S&P Global Commodities at Sea.

The Dangote refinery is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

Nigeria, despite being the most populous country in Africa and its top oil producer, ironically imports almost all of its fuel.

Primarily, this is attributed to the nation’s lack of sufficient refining infrastructure, a gap that the new refinery seeks to fill.

Dangote said the refinery is positioned to be one of the best petroleum refineries in the world.


“What we are doing is to be able to export petroleum products to anywhere and compete with any company. By next week, we’ll be producing about ten thousand ppm in terms of diesel which now what’s happening in that we import about 2 to 3 thousand. We will produce the best,” Dangote added.
