Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that those benefiting from fuel importation will do all in their power to frustrate the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

In an interview with Financial Times, the former President described the Dangote refinery as a project that should encourage both Nigerians and non-Nigerians.

“Aliko’s investment in a refinery, if it goes well, should encourage both Nigerians and non-Nigerians to invest in Nigeria.

“If those who are selling or supplying refined products for Nigeria feel that they will lose the lucrative opportunity, they will also make every effort to get him frustrated,” Obasanjo stated.

Obasanjo shared his opinion on the heels of recent allegations by the President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, that some
that some government and non-government officials were making efforts to frustrate the $20bn refinery.

Officials of the Dangote Group recently cried out that international oil companies were frustrating the refinery by refusing to sell crude or by selling to them at a premium up to $4 above the normal price.

This prompted the Federal Executive Council’s directive to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, to sell crude oil to Dangote Refinery and other local refineries in naira and not in United States greenback.

They also accused the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority of deliberately granting licences to individuals to import dirty fuel.

The regulator denied this, saying Dangote diesel was inferior when compared to the imported ones

The NMDPRA Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, also stated that the country would not stop fuel importation to avoid a monopoly by the Dangote Group.

Dangote commenced operations at his behemoth facility located in Lagos last December with 350,000 barrels a day. The refinery hopes to achieve its full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day by the end of the year.

The refinery has begun the supply of diesel and aviation fuel to marketers in the country while petrol supply is expected to commence in August amid regulatory resistance.

Kwankwaso Blames Dangote Refinery Saga On Vested Interests
In the wake of the controversies, former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, while weighing in on the disagreement, blamed the saga on vested interests.

Reacting via his X handle, Kwankwaso blamed what he described as ‘unnecessary fuss’ on vested interests, saying it could damage investor confidence in the Nigerian economy.

"The creation of unnecessary fuss around its integrity by some vested interests is very unfortunate, and it stands to undo all the years of hard work to maintain the fragile investor confidence in our economy,” he said.

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general elections described Dangote’s refinery as a crucial asset for the nation’s energy needs and economic stability.

He also stressed the importance of protecting the asset from any threats that could undermine its operations.

“I was privileged to visit the magnificent Dangote Refinery, and I was marvelled by the sheer commitment that went into the quality of its establishment,It’s time for us to rally around this National Asset to ensure that the monumental project does not fail. It cannot fail, and the Nigerian government must understand this by demonstrating fairness and confidence in both domestic and foreign critical investments,” he stated.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has pleaded with Nigerians to shun the planned nationwide hunger protest.

He said better days are ahead and Nigerians will soon breathe a sigh of relief.

He said President Bola Tinubu recognises the right to peaceful protest but circumspection should be the watchword.

He said the government was weary of protests being hijacked by bandits, insurgents, and other criminals.

He urged the citizens to go about their legitimate businesses and avoid actions capable of disturbing the peace of the country.


Akume made the plea at a briefing alongside four key ministers and the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The others are the minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, the coordinating minister of the economy and minister of finance, Wale Edun, the minister of budget and national planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu and the minister of solid minerals, Dele Alake.

Akume begged Nigerians to pursue the path of peace, dialogue and collaboration.

He said: “Ladies and gentlemen, it is in the light of these aforementioned situation and accomplishments that we wish to inform you that Nigeria is a work in progress and in due course, we shall breathe a sigh of relief.

"The ongoing economic hardships would abate very soon and we shall all enjoy endless prosperity"

“We therefore appeal to Nigerians of whatever persuasion, belief, demography, gender and status to shun calls for protest against hunger by prioritising peace and progress.”

Ahead of the hunger protest scheduled to begin on Thursday, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has mocked organisers to go ahead with the demonstration while they watch on eating.

Akpabio made this disclosure on Tuesday while addressing delegates of the Niger Delta Development Commission in Rivers State.

The Senate President, who seems displeased with the planned protest, said the Niger-Delta people are not ready for a regime change while referencing the statement of the MD of the commission.

“All of us feel the impact of what is happening now. But we are aware it will be for a short while. MD, I want to want to thank you for what you said. You said we are not interested in regime change; let us own this government.

“Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be there eating — I must thank the Niger Delta.

“We acknowledge the fact that the impact of oil and gas activities in our region has done immeasurable damage to our people,” he stressed.

He assured that the National Assembly is ready to help with legislation to curb oil spillage and environmental pollution in the region.

“The specific issues faced by the Niger Delta must be contained in that communique because we are going to make it available to Mr President.

“The ones that need legislation will come to us, the ones that need intervention will go to NDDC, the ones that need more money will go to the president and commander-in-chief and I assure you that those issues will be addressed,” he maintained.

The PUNCH reports Akpabio called for an emergency meeting of the Senate due to the forthcoming protest scheduled for August 1 to 10.

A circular signed by the Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze on Monday, said the meeting was of “National Importance”.

The internal circular did not give further details on the emergency meeting.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, just one day before the commencement of the nationwide planned protest against hunger and hardship.

The memo wrote, “Dear Distinguished Senators, the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate be convened as follows: Date: WEDNESDAY, JULY 31st, 2024; TIME: 12 NOON.”

Mega Economic disaster, brought about by the removal of fuel subsidy, has left so many Nigerians with a portfolio of difficulties in ever increasing daily living costs.

Even our once enjoyable fuel priced, at N450 per litre which seemed a lot little easy difficult nowadays it is either N850 a litre, at most 1000 black market price therefore, the suffering is too much.

Federal Government on it's own effort, has tried to alleviate the economy through cash policies of grants and Loans to Nigerians, but this good gesture continues to linger unperturbedly Inadequate to cover the spread.

Regardless of the increase in our Nation Minimum Wage to record worthy N70,000 many Nigerians continue to be without unemployment in such a way that they may not be shortlisted to be among those on the minimum wage payroll.

At this moment of Empirical Literary illiteracy, it is in my well experienced wisdom to say"Protest"will constitute a great disaster to our National discipline. Having witness firsthand what happened that day at the Lekki toll gate, we should reject any thought of protest because we will only be putting ourselves on a keg of gun powder.

Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in the 2023 election, has described the death of Ohanaeze Ndigbo President -General, Mr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as shocking.

The former governor of Anambra expressed his sadness over the demise of the Ohanaeze president on his X handle on Friday.

Obi said he was a bridge builder who would be remembered for so many positives.

“I am greatly disheartened by the death of an elder statesman and President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

"The devastating reports of his death have left all who knew him heartbroken.

“He was not just a father to many, but a bridge builder who remained committed to the peaceful coexistence of the nation,” he said.

Obi said that Iwuanyanwu was undoubtedly a patriotic Nigerian whose desire for justice, equity, progress and development of the nation transcended tribal boundaries.

"He was one of those revered father figures, who had always given me useful advice.

“He promised me that he would soon be alright to continue with his contributions to the progress of the nation. I continued to pray for his quick and full recovery.

“I sincerely condole with his immediate family, the Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, and the entire nation over the death of this revered patriarch,”he said.

Obi prayed that God should grant us all the fortitude to bear his sad loss and grant him eternal rest.
