Autos‎STAR ⭐ Benue Inventor Turning Scrap Metal Into World-class Motorcycles by nathyx(op): 7:27am On Jul 13
‎In the heart of Gboko, Benue State, Nigeria, lies a remarkable grassroot innovator Johnson Lubem Noah, better known as the force behind Lubem Custom. This Self-taught Tech STAR ⭐ has risen from humble beginnings to become a celebrated local inventor and motorcycle 🏍️ manufacturer. Using condemned iron scraps, discarded parts, and sheer determination, he builds and customizes robust, affordable motorcycles that rival imported models often at half the price while offering superior durability for Nigerian roads.

‎Born in 1993 in Gboko Benue State, Lubem’s inventive spirit emerged early. As a child around age 5, he crafted toy cars and bikes, earning the nickname “engineer” from his grandmother who recognized his talent and, in 2000, took the young Lubem to a motorcycle mechanic workshop for apprenticeship.

‎While peers mocked him — calling him a “madman” for carrying scrap metal in one school bag and books in another, Lubem immersed himself in mechanics. He would change into work clothes after school, scavenging materials and experimenting relentlessly.

‎After completing workshop training around 2010, customers began bringing brand-new bikes for him to customize into his distinctive designs. That validation was pivotal says the STAR ⭐ “People will buy bikes and come to me so I can change it into my own design. So, that made me understand that I am special.”

‎Now in his early 30s, LuBem has crafted over 50 motorcycles from scratch and customized more than 100 Bikes including Cafe Racers, Street Cubs, BMX Cubs, power bikes, and more — all tailored to Nigerian needs: sturdy frames with advanced suspension for rough terrain, low fuel consumption, LED lights, remote starters, trackers, and even app connectivity in some models.

‎Nigeria’s Talent Laden Youth bulge needs more role models like him: Self-Starters who create jobs, solve local problems, and boost national pride. With better access to funding, mentorship, and policy support for indigenous manufacturers, innovators like Lubem could drive real industrial growth.

Science/TechnologyAfrica Must Setup And Use Its Own Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp Etc. by nathyx(op): 3:54pm On Jul 04
Africa is home to one of the world's fastest-growing digital populations, with hundreds of millions of users engaging daily on social media. Yet, the platforms dominating this space include Meta's Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, alongside X (formerly Twitter) and others which are overwhelmingly foreign-owned. This dominance extracts value while raising serious concerns about sovereignty, youth wellbeing, data security, and economic opportunity. It's time for Africa to invest in building and prioritizing its own social media ecosystem.

‎Today in Africa, Foreign social media giants have achieved near-total market penetration across the continent. As of mid-2026, Facebook holds around 88% market share in social media traffic in Africa, with WhatsApp as the dominant messaging app and Instagram and TikTok gaining strong traction among younger users.

‎These platforms generate enormous revenues from African users through advertising and data-driven models. Meta's global revenue exceeded $164 billion in 2024 and approached $200 billion in 2025, with significant contributions from emerging markets including Africa are categorized under "Rest of the World" While exact Africa-specific figures are often opaque due to Meta's use of structures like its Irish subsidiary for international users (minimizing local tax contributions), the continent's hundreds of millions of active users represent a massive, growing revenue stream. African users fuel ad targeting, content engagement, and data collection, yet much of the economic value flows outward.

Science/Technology‎Mastercard Setup African Cybersecurity Hubs In Nigeria And South Africa by nathyx(op): 9:21am On Jul 01
Mastercard has launched an Africa Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence, a pan-African initiative it said will help financial institutions, government bodies and businesses share threat intelligence and shore up their defences.

‎The announcement was timed to a visit to both countries by Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach and carried endorsements from President Cyril Ramaphosa and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Mastercard tied the initiative to commitments made to the South African government during the G20 meetings in Johannesburg last year and to recent talks in Abuja.

‎Payments giant Mastercard is selling security alongside transactions, with South Africa and Nigeria first in line to benefit from the phased roll-out will start this year in South Africa and Nigeria.

‎Mastercard described the Africa Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence as a virtual hub “delivered through connected digital platforms” rather than a physical facility, with no rand value, no named local partners and no staffing figures attached.

‎Its first-year offering centres on a cyber-risk analysis covering up to 50 organisations and an Africa-focused threat-intelligence feed from Recorded Future – a US$2.65-billion threat intelligence firm Mastercard bought in December 2024. Collaboration among security chiefs, joint exercises and resilience assessments make up the rest.

‎The centre is another step in Mastercard’s expansion from a card payments network into security and intelligence services – capabilities it increasingly sells alongside the transactions it already processes, with one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies as the proving ground.

‎Mastercard said it has invested more than $12.6-billion in cybersecurity since 2018, a figure it did not break down.

‎On the threat picture, Mastercard said South Africa is the continent’s most-targeted market, accounting for about 29% of ransomware attacks and 40% of phishing incidents in Africa, with only an estimated 35% of incidents reported. It put Africa’s digital economy on course to reach $1.5-trillion by 2030.

‎Interpol’s 2025 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment, drawing on Trend Micro figures, recorded more ransomware detections in South Africa than any other African country – 17 849, ahead of Egypt’s 12 281 – and found phishing made up about a third of reported incidents continent-wide. Interpol estimated cumulative cybercrime losses across Africa topped $3-billion between 2019 and 2025.
