EBONYI ROADS ARE BEST IN SOUTH-EAST, SAYS BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright, has commended Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State for developing infrastructure in the state barely two years of his administration. Arkwright, made the commendation during a state banquet organised in his honour by the state government in Abakaliki on Sunday night. The High Commissioner who was on a working visit to the state, said he travelled on smooth roads into and within the state, describing the roads in Ebonyi as the best in the South-East. "Ebonyi roads are the best in the South-East," the envoy added in a statement on Monday by Umahi's Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya. ArkWright told the guests at the banguet that he was on the visit to look into the opportunities in agriculture, rice production and infrastructure in the state. Decribing Ebonyi as a young state, he pointed out that he was optimistic about its future. He promised that the United Kingdom would partner in realising the dream. His words," We are here to look into the opportunity in agriculture, rice production and infrastructure. "As a young state, Ebonyi is quite optimistic to the future and the United Kingdom will be a partner to realising the future. "The United Kingdom is aware of the challenges of development in Africa and Nigeria in particular". Earlier, in his remarks,Governor Umahi had called on the British Government to help Africa, especially Nigeria. "The British Government should move on to help Africa. Nigeria is the largest country in Africa. When you brought to us religion, we accepted it but you didn't bring your technology. I think there is the need to develop your technology in Nigeria, Governor. Umahi said. " I want to take that opportunity as you said and we want to partner you in the area of agriculture. We have a lot of mineral deposits like zinc, salt, lead and others. In fact, we are sitting on money. "We also need your help because we have a lot of internally displaced persons from Ezza-Ezillo and Ezza communal clashes. There is the boundary clashes between Cross River and Ebonyi in which a lot of people have been displaced. There are also those from Izzi, Abakaliki and Ikwo axis that were displaced ".

UMAHI'S, 2 YEARS OF IMPACTFUL GOVERNANCE By Philip Nweze Everyone must leave something behind when he dies... Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die...It doesn't matter what you do, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's different after you take your hands away. – Ray Bradbury. The above quote summarises the concept of governance. Providing good governance that will outlive this generation ought to be the heart and soul of any right thinking leader. It is perhaps the only way to keep a date with history in future when your name would be recited like a favourite song by posterity when our generation must have faded away. This is a fact well understood by our governor, Engr David Umahi. Governor David Umahi is a man who doesn't need any form of introduction as far as Nigerian politics is concerned. My comments are prompted by the Governor's tall legacies in his mere two years of service. Umahi understands that if his government will be remembered for good, he must begin to think of a post-Umahi era, when he would be venerated like Kwame Nkruma of Ghana, Julius Nyere of Tanzania and Nelson Mandela of South Africa. This reasoning has remained his propelling force. He inherited a crumbling state and built it from the scratch. Here in Ebonyi, David Umahi can readily be our own Mao Yes Tung; he can be our own John Fitzgerald Kennedy because he is full of developmental ideas. His widely acknowledged innovative approach to leadership has placed our dear state on the map of national relevance and brought back the Ebonyi pride. The List speaks for itself. And it is an eloquent testimony to the high esteem and touching adoration the great people of Ebonyi State have for their Governor. The Ebonyi State Administration of Chief David Umahi has an impressive list of achievements in key fields of human endeavour but I will leave his accomplishments at just three: human, infrastructure and welfare strides. Suffice it to say that in time, his high standards of performance in office shall remain the benchmark for measuring service delivery in public office. It is obvious that Umahi is on a God-sent mission to ressurect the state from retrogression. He inherited an empty treasury and left developments rather than excuses for people. After Mr Michael Okpara of blessed memory, the next great leaders of Ndigbo are/were in this order: Jim Nwobodo, Sam Mbakwe and David Umahi. Mr Jim Nwobodo and Sam Mbakwe learned from the master, Ogbuefi Nnamdi Azikiwe. They learned what public service is supposed to be and they both subordinated their individual goals, and family needs to public service. Since this piece is about Chief Umahi, l will drop Mr Sam Mbakwe and Nwobodo off from here. I brought them in because both were healthy rivals and colleagues whose footsteps Umahi has followed doggedly and tenaciously. The first two dwarf the third by a million miles for the last governs a small state with a radius of not more than 50 miles. But they all share similar passion and zeal for service. Umahi is perhaps the correction of the lower caliber leadership that has become the bane of the Igbo after Nwobodo and Mbakwe. He has designated himself as a caring Governor who ponders daily on the sufferings of his people. By all comparism, Umahi is still topping the chat as the best Governor Ebonyi ever had. He assumed the mantle of leadership of the state on May 29, 2015, barely nineteen by the military in 1996. With the state virtually lacking infrastructure, Umahi settled down quickly to the task of governance, mobilising the people and available resources to facilitate development. In Abakaliki, the state capital, Umahi has completed the asphalting of all major roads in a very short period. He has extended the same measure to other roads in the rural areas. The governor is noted for his perfectionist approach to state matters as reflected in the quality of his projects which has virtually touched every part of the state. He has transformed the much neglected Abakaliki capital into an emerging city and a subject of national dialogue. He has made the voice of the Ebonyi man relevant in Nigeria's dialogue. The administration of Chief David Umahi must be remembered for reconnecting the state to Nigeria's mainstream politics. Many must have forgotten that there was hardly any love lost between Ebonyi state government and the Federal Government before Umahi arrived at the gubernatorial scene. Through discipline, diligence and respect for superior authority, Governor Umahi has made Ebonyi state one of the most reliable and friendly allies of the federal government. The government of Chief Umahi definitely stands as a trail blazer in the area of youth empowerment. There was a time when youths were given wheelbarrows and overused motorcycles as objects of empowerment. But Umahi came in and revolutionised the trend. He has been able to engage the teaming population of youths in the state productively, so that the issue of social insecurity, crimes and criminality would be reduced. He is empowering the youth by creating wealth and job opportunities, to the extent that many youths in their hundreds are either serving as political appointees as Senior Technical Assistants and Technical Assistants or are proud owners of business investments. This development has helped reduce youth restiveness as the youths that benefited from this act of benevolence are now enjoying useful existence on their own. The exploits of Governor David Umahi's administration in agriculture should not pass without being mentioned. His rice Programme in the state is a good effort aimed at placing Ebonyi on a strong financial footing and independence as the food basket of the nation. The lean finances of the state government vis-a-vis the number of projects being executed in various parts of the state defies every rational elucidation. The courage and boldness he has demonstrated in handling the task of developing our young state are quite uncommon. This piece is demonstrative of the joy and excitement an average Ebonyian feels. The legacies of Umahi led administration are so many that no five pages of any newspaper can contain them exhaustively. It would, therefore, be unrealistic for any reader to expect to read in a single stretch, all the achievements of the Umahi's government.

*Gov Umahi offers scholarships to four best Mathematics students* The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr Chief Dave Nweze Umahi, has awarded university scholarships to four junior secondary students for their outstanding performance in Mathematics and Oral Mental Arithmetic competitions. He announced this during presentation of the students to the State Executive Council at the Government House, Abakaliki on Wednesday. The four students are Miss Igwe Amarachi from Government Technical College Agba, who was the overall best competitor; Miss Ikechukwu Mary from Uburu Secondary School; Sorochukwu Nwefuru from Government Technical College, Abakaliki and Ori Catherine from Government Technical College Agba. Umahi, according to a statement on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, was particularly impressed with the intelligence displayed by the students while answering questions on the subjects without using four figure table or calculator. He said that the fund for them to study Medicine after their secondary education would be made available to them ahead of time to ensure that nothing constituted a barrier to their study. The governor directed his Personal Assistant, Mr. Silas Onu, to liaise with the parents of the children to open accounts for them, adding that payment of their school fees into the account would commence next week. Clarifying that the money would not be accessed until they gained admission into the university, Umahi said that the scholarship would last six years. His words: "I will pay your school fees for Medicine in advance. We'll open accounts for four of you and I will know how much the school fees for each and everyone of you are. I will pay the money into the accounts. It will stay there so that as you enter the university, you will not have problem of school fees. We will tell the bank not to release the money until you start university education." In an interview, one of the organisers of the programme, Mr. Alike Friday, said that students from 12 schools drawn from the three senatorial district of the state participated in the training. He explained that they were taught how to do addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and others off hand. LESSONS FROM UMAHI'S VISIT TO ABIA By Philip Nweze On Thursday May 4 2017, Governor David Umahi led a strong delegation to Abia state as part of a broad tactical action to broaden the economic prospects of Ebonyi state. The two day official visit took the Governor and his team to key project locations as well as public private institutions that have bearing with trade, investment, commerce and agriculture. The governor and his team of key government functionaries from the line ministries and agencies as well as the leadership of Abakpa main market traders association were in Abia state as part of the resolve of Governors of the south east zone to collaborate and share ideas as a way to promote good leadership and improve the happiness index of their people. Governor Umahi who on arrival was received in audience by his Abia state counterpart, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu at the Government House Umuahia during a courtesy call, renewed the bilateral relations existing between the two sister states. Guided by the host Governor, Engr Umahi and his team visited a number of projects, including the Abia pilot mushroom farm in Umuahia which yields about 1,600 kilogrammes of mushroom that generates close to 132 million naira in eight weeks, the state's poultry farm housing over 2,500 birds situated within the Ministry of Agriculture complex as well as a palm plantation site. He also inspected exhibition of made in Aba products in Ariaria, erosion control projects, and a one stop shop public private partnership and investment promotion firm where he offered a joint investment proposal between Ebonyi and Abia states and inspected a number of road projects as well as a multi skills and entrepreneurship acquisition centre: makers of furniture, bricks and metal works, located at Ngwa. Governor Umahi also performed the flag off ceremony for the reconstruction of the age-long deplorable 5.7km Port Harcourt express road, Aba during which he expressed contentment for the significant milestone recorded by Ikpeazu administration in the area of superstructural development, e commerce, security and youth entrepreneurship. He explained that the reconstruction of Port Harcourt road in Aba which had remained impassable for years was very strategic to realising the dream of making Aba which is the commercial nerve center of Abia state the Dubai of Africa. The peer review mechanism provided the Governor with the opportunity to tap from the Abia experience. He and his team listened to presentations on Abia state's economy and business opportunities. His consultations with his Abia counterpart, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu were extensive and thorough, all geared towards realising his vision of making Ebonyi state a brand name in trade and commerce. Governor Umahi through his actions and pronouncements has left no one in doubt that Ebonyi state is well on course towards experiencing industrial explosion soon. The governor's burning desire to expand the investment opportunities in Ebonyi state came alive again when he announced the setting up of the Ebonyi Investment Commission to further understudy Abia state on how to attract and nurture more investors to do business in Ebonyi state. The move sealed the resolve of the Umahi led administration to take the state's industrial march to the next level. The Ebonyi leader believes that the private sector driven initiative being experimented by Abia state was a viable option to enhance economic growth in the zone. He realises the need to reposition the state from a consumer economy with massive investment infusions which will catalyze the intended industrial revolution. The Governor's choice of Aba for this important mission is not misplaced. He has in different fora spoken glowingly about the place of Abia in the industrial space in Nigeria and its ability to serve as a corridor for exchange of ideas and expertise to sister southern states. An average Aba man is a man of ideas with a great creative mind that manifests skill, trade and craft. From the Aba tailor, the Aba shoemaker, bag markers to the fabricators, there is a generic talent that grows in the ancient city. The Aba made goods remain a story that has gone far and wide. The power of the creativity of the artisans and tradesmen and their profound skill in developing local content have transcended many shores. Aba regarded as the fashion capital of Nigeria and Japan of Africa, boasts of more than 100, 000 artisans engaged in shoe making and other leather goods and over 20, 000 people engaged in garment making. The new administration in Ebonyi state is thinking about indigenous industrialization - home breed technology which is what Aba summarily represents, hence the burning desire to activate partnership with Abia state government. The visit has signaled the start of an improved collaboration between two potential giants who share similar passion. On a general note, the visit reveals that there is a lot governors can learn from one another if only they're humble enough to understand that nobody has a monopoly of knowledge. Umahi's visit to Ikpeazu leaves big and memorable lessons to other governors and leaders to always interface and exchange ideas to move their states forward. The opportunity of setting up the proposed vocational training institutes for skills acquisition and development that the visit offers will enhance the process of bridging the gap between industry and academia in Ebonyi state. The target is to make Ebonyi the leading light of the new Nigeria market especially in commerce, Agriculture and investment. To achieve this, the Ebonyi state government has taken seriously the issue of infrastructural renewal of the state because you cannot talk about industrialization in a place where there is dearth of infrastructure. Currently, strategic roads are being constructed in the three senatorial zones of Ebonyi state with a view to making the state accessible from different directions. With the planned industrial development, Ebonyi state will soon experience a very comfortable internally revenue framework, massive employment opportunities and boundless wealth. The state is fast opening its doors to the world. Let us join hands and welcome the benefits that knock on our collective door. Ebonyi state governor has made several deals and connections to attract direct foreign investment too. He has travelled to industrialised super countries like China and Dubai. In his visit to these countries, the governor has had the opportunity of engaging with leading investment companies and investors, attending investment and development conferences and inspecting blue chip companies and infrastructure. All of these are in a bid to attract foreign direct investment to the state. He knows that the task of achieving economic transformation of Ebonyi state from a civil service economy to an industrialised economy in record time cannot be achieved by common place endeavour but through action. The governor has never hidden his intention to harness the potentials in the state. Where others see failure he sees success. The optimist says the glass is half full. The pessimist says the glass is half empty. Chief Umahi is an optimist. The Ebonyi state government is now ready to receive industrialists, to offer them the assistance they need to make their enterprise sink deep roots in the soil of Ebonyi state. Wealth and prosperity is on course for us all.
