Nairaland / General / Must Read BLOG: The Top Ten Most Overrated Nigerians by nawaforweo: 11:11pm On Jun 12, 2012
This is what i got from a Poster on Ascology ooo

FULL LINK: http://ascology.com/news/green360/opinions-sent-stories/25262-Must-Read-BLOG-The-Top-Ten-Most-Overrated-Nigerians.html

Here is a compilation of my Nigeria's Top Ten Most Overrated people in my humble opinion. Before you read, being overrated does not mean being terrible.

It simply means what the Oxford Dictionary says; It means you are being talked about FAR MORE than your WORTH. My blog is also not aimed at comparing the "best" or "worst" people in an industry but at the most talked about (popular) people who are recognised yet not measuring up to the price tag on them. And this is in no particular order. But No.1 goes to the President of the Association, the President himself.

Nollywood Actress and Singer, Tonto Dikeh

This 2005 ‘Next Movie Star’ Nollywood actress seems to be good at what she knows how to do best; but definitely not movies. Gorgeous smile, eccentric body, fabulous show off of public ego, public captions & attention-seeking stunts; name it.

From producers accusing her of negligence of professional duties on set to causing troubles and stirring controversy with fellow acts and celebrities, one trouble to the other with social network fans on Twitter and a show of intolerance, ethics and moral obligation to youths on public courtesy towards criticism directed at her puts her on this list.

I ran a thorough check on reviews of her filmography and with utmost surprise cannot help but wonder if that’s the least movie producers and directors can offer Nigerians and their self-acclaimed global fans.

All I could attach to her is someone who is a product of the Westernized thinking of ‘If you’ve got it then flaunt it’ rather than letting her brains do the talking. I stand to be corrected that talent plays any part in today’s world of entertainment and if her role in ‘Dirty Secret’ is what industry critics call professional, then we all should brace up to welcome porn stars in Nigeria as “acting professional” too.

Also, nothing against adventures, but why she continues in her bid to become a Singing superstar after signing a recording deal with producer Kas, she should also take tutorials from much more talented but bandwagon industry seniors like Ramsey Nouah, Omotola Jolade-Ekehinde, Genève Nnaji, Jim Iyke and Desmond Elliot on what the Nigerian music industry really tastes like. I honestly don’t think quacks can survive that industry for too long unlike our dear Nollywood.

Nothing against you Tonto, we the ‘fans’ love you but please show us more talent, creativity than body exposures and stay off cheap& unwarranted controversy and utmost disrespect for tweeting fans.

Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan

He’s unarguably Public Enemy No.1 in Nigeria as of today. Barely less than a year ago, Nigeria elected a ‘fresh breath of air’ into its political arena and for the first time, a man who had no shoes. For the sake of readers not getting carried away by the minor aspect of the debate on who they should have voted for in the 2011 Presidential Polls, this is NOT a blame game on who Nigerians should have voted for or not but when we go out to vote based on cheap superstitious beliefs surrounding a man’s name and theatrical continuous ascent to power rather than genuine instincts and commonsensical opinions on who to vote for; the result is what we have today.

Nigeria has had dictators and authoritarian leaders but I stand my ground to say never has the country has a clueless leader as that of President Goodluck Jonathan. From worsening financial crisis to dwindling job rates, the much alarming rate of insecurity in the country, high rates in kidnapping, insecurity, and unending sight of corruption all coupled with him taking highly unpopular actions tantamount to causing uproars among his citizenry. No apology reserved and none owed but we’ve got a clueless leader as Commander-in-Chief who even with although rare laudable steps and actions, have ways of ill-timing or wrapping it up with negative effects attached; the Fuel Subsidy Removal, the UNILAG Renaming and the Al-Majiri school creations are such examples.

Typically, he is not an overrated person as of today he is downrightly detested by all n sundry. But the fact that President Jonathan is a product of an overrated & highly misinformed electoral campaign process and tactics, aided by celebrities, business moguls, eminent personalities, overwhelming misinformed youths and an amazing 78% of the voters elected him despite presenting no articulate and clear-cut manifesto as to how he aimed to carry out Presidential tasks; he makes the list as my Number 1 most overrated person in Nigeria.

Blogger, Linda Ikeji

Made-up stories, self-appreciation-storyline concepts, grammatical blunders, ludicrous blogging and intentional soliciting for public attention via scrupulous attacks on Nigerian celebrities and personalities, many who are in no way a match for her in talent and creativity puts her on this list.

Why Nigerian youths decide to honour a particularly misinformed person as their source of information is only known to them, but that isn’t a surprise. Didn’t examination body, NECO report a handful 3% of its candidates made the required credits with only 31% making the required credits by WAEC in 2011?

Well we can sit down here and blame government and the dwindling educational sector all we want for such alarming rates, but with an “Icon and Role model” whose writings and spellings are typical of that of a high school dropout being massively followed by a bunch of misinformed and ‘gossip’ seeking youths rather than more professional, educative, creative and talented bloggers. Maybe Pastor Tunde Bakare’s got an added reason to call us a Nation of Fools ruled by Idiots, so it seems.

Former Nigerian Footballer, Austin Jay Jay Okocha

I know I may get shot for this but I’ll take a pass. Austin Jay Jay Okocha was no doubt Nigeria’s most overrated football player throughout his playing career thanks to a misinforming media at that time. Before the advent of the internet and digital cable networks, Nigerians were made to believe that Jay Jay was a better player than Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo combined together with some even claiming racial discrimination, often pointing out he’d have won the World Footballer of the Year if he had been white; well epic failure.

I wish not to be caught in the web of misunderstanding; Jay Jay Okocha was a fantastic player and a skilful one at that, but not just at the figure at which we weighed him. A 1994 African Nations Cup winner and an Olympic Gold medallist say it all that he deserves some respect. That we hold a player like Austin Jay Jay Okocha in high esteem and yet could not win for himself a major league trophy despite a 20-year-old playing career sting in Europe is hard to swallow.

Many Nigerian players before, during and after Okocha specifically those who dare not breathe where he does could easily dismiss him by the counts of their achievements during their playing career for top European sides. Besides Manchester United and arguably Arsenal, teams like Chelsea, Madrid, Milan, Inter, Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and the SS Lazio, Valencia, Dortmund of those days have seen various top football coaches, managers and football scouts come and gone.

But could all these coaches be wrong for TWENTY YEARS of his Euro playing career not to have signed him on unto a top winning team? And I’m sure you wouldn’t want to know where the likes of PSG, Frankfurt or Bolton all rank in football at that time or now.

For whatever reasons his inability to play for a top flight European team over a 20-year period was and his inability to lead (as Captain) the Super Eagles team to the 2006 Germany World Cup with Angola leading the group, I’m sorry people, he made my list.

Musical Artiste, Kelly Hansome

Now this is one dude I bother why I’m writing about. Our music industry is without doubt filled with talents, creative geniuses and artistic bast***; maximum respect to them. But how this boy found himself in the league of men erodes me. From a highly contentious ‘Maga Don Pay’ hit single to helping Newspapers & electronic media sell traffic than he’ll sell his own albums; it’s a must he’s filed on this list.

His recent Twitter rant against, Kennis Music CEO, Kenny Ogungbe was one of the dumbest and audacious outbursts any professional artist can ever get in. There are professional ways to handle embittered business relationships but tweeting someone and accusing them over a failed contract or business relationship is like walking up to someone in Market and saying “Hello everyone, he stole my money and God will judge him for doing that”.

Not even the much trumpeted Don Jazzy vs Dbanj feud had both artists engaged themselves in Twitter handle castigations. Nature could be so unfair. How highly educated, talented, creative and hardworking Nigerians are bypassed by f these non-thinkers to fame-land amazes me.

Religion / Editorial: Could Jesus Christ Be Gay? by nawaforweo: 10:51am On May 21, 2012
On the much controversial Gays & Same-Sex Marriages, yesterday, I took the adequate liberty to finally conclude my closer study on the submissions and opinions of some people I’ve always followed on religion. Lord Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of London; Archbishop Antonio Mennini, the Vatican representative to Great Britain; Anglican Clergyman, The Rev Paul Oestreicher and also my friend and colleague Clifford Longley and I feel impetuously provoked to respond.

Let me make this very clear, I have no particular support or antagonism for LGBTs. My reasons are more philosophical. The statement that our Lord Jesus Christ was probably Gay should go into record as the MOST BLASHEMOUS statement in history and NO it was not made by an atheist or any of those scientifically enlisted non-believers but was made by an Anglican Clergyman, The Rev Paul Oestreicher. His opinion really made me sick and I feel nothing but total betrayal of our trust and acceptance of the Christian faith and religion.

But wait a minute, why should I be sick or disappointed?

As a cultured African, it is not an underestimation to say that Christianity was a forced religion on us and in as much as we’ve accepted it; I must confess I have no IOTA OF REGRET if I change my mind and my reasons are not farfetched. If the same people who brought a religion to us says it is not so or says it has changed, why should I bother myself to argue or go into a futile debate with them? Don’t forget, Nigeria’s colonial masters who brought Christianity into (Championed by the Church of England and the British Parliaments) have said homosexuality has come to stay, so WHY THE REMORSE AND WHY THE WHOLE NOISE?

Furthermore, it’s been passed on from generations to generations that the only way to Salvation (as far as Christianity is concerned) is through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour which I vehemently and passionately believe in. But the position of Archbishop Antonio Mennini, the Vatican representative to Great Britain is more of a compartmentalised escape root in kicking out Homosexuality amongst us, which I’m afraid doesn’t normally work out well.

Nairaland / General / Soldiers Beat Bus Driver To Death In Edo by nawaforweo: 7:10pm On May 18, 2012
A commercial bus driver identified as Isaac Onaiwu has been allegedly beaten to death by soldiers from the Nigeria Army School of Supply and Transport (S&T) Ugbowo in Edo State.

The late Onaiwu aged 48 died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where he was taken to by soldiers and policemen after being beaten to coma.

Sources at the hospital said the deceased was brought by soldiers and died few hours later.
Elder brother of the deceased, Matthew Onaiwu said his late brother was an operator of a campus shuttle bus between the UNIBEN and Ring Road.

He said his late brother had a collision with a car belonging to an Army lieutenant on Tuesday night following which soldiers dragged Isaac Onaiwu to S & T where he was allegedly beaten to a state of coma and later taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) by soldiers and policemen.

Matthew said his younger brother died Thursday afternoon at the hospital from the severe beating he received.
He said they had earlier reported the incident to the Ugbowo Police Station, Benin.

When contacted to confirm the story, the Administrative Officer of S & T, Capt. Uche said: “Why are you calling me? Who gave you my number? There is no such story here. Go back to UBTH.”

Crime / 18 Year-old Girl Dies After Horror Gang Rape by nawaforweo: 4:09pm On Mar 29, 2012
http://ascology.com/news/world-news/22828-year-old-girl-dies-after-horror-gang-rape.html

An 18-year old Ukrainian girl died Thursday almost three weeks after suffering a gang rape attack by youths which shocked the nation and raised new doubts about the competence of its police.

Oksana Makar was raped by three young men in their early 20s, strangled, burned alive and then left for dead in the attack in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv, investigators have said.

The victim was found by a passer-by after she was dumped by her attackers at an abandoned construction site. She was hospitalised with 55 percent burns in a critical condition, requiring the amputation of one of her arms.

Oksana Makar died of her injuries in a specialist hospital in the eastern city of Donetsk where she had been taken after her rescue, the clinic announced.

Her heart stopped beating after she suffered a pulmonary haemorrhage and she died despite three attempts to resuscitate her, the chief doctor of the Donetsk Burns centre, Emil Fistal, told AFP.

He said the fact she was able to survive for three weeks since the attack, which occured on March 9 or 10, according to the source, had only been possible due to intense treatment and therapy.

Politics / Breaking News: Boko Haram Vow To Attack Other Parts Of Nigeria by nawaforweo: 11:39am On Mar 03, 2012
http://ascology.com/news/local-news/22366-Boko-Haram-vow-attack-other-parts-Nigeria.html

JOS, - Islamist Sect Boko Haram has threatened to attack other parts of the country should the government refuse to listen to their demands in their ongoing string of attacks majorly in the Nigeria’s northern part.

The group which has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in which estimates have been put at thousands since it began its violent operation in 2009 did not give further details in the brief and short email.

The spokesman claimed it is only fair that the Nigerian Government shows sincerity and honesty if it truly intends to negotiate with the group rather than the path of 'smart games' it alleges government officials have been playing.

The group also faulted the government’s amnesty programme with the country’s Niger Delta militants calling it a failure which was built on bias.

"The foundation of this country was built on lies, deceit, fraud and inequity, this same government negotiated with some people everyone saw as terrorists and although they've been given money and pampered at the back, they are still carrying out attacks and people see nothing wrong with it" the group said in an email retrieved by Ascology News purported to be from Boko Haram spokesperson Abul-Qaqa.

"The government is playing smart games and henceforth we are planning out our own attacks in major areas of the country especially the South South to show that we are serious and want to be heard too" he added.

PHOTO: An emergency official looks on, after multiple bomb blasts by the Boko Haram sect killed around 180 people.

It is not immediately clear if the sect is responding to the recent re-emergence of militancy attacks in the Niger Delta region.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) yesterday claimed responsibility for the attack in Bayelsa in which four policemen were killed.

The attack has been seen by security experts as unwelcoming despite the amnesty deal militants in Nigeria's restive Niger Delta region reached with the government in 2010, although MEND's commander Jomo Gbomo denied the group was ever part of the amnesty deal.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in Nigeria's Hausa language, is responsible for the deaths of over a thousand people since it launched its sectarian attacks in 2009 in its bid to enforce the implementation of Sharia law in the country.

Nairaland / General / I'm Not Corrupt, I Pleaded Guilty To Save Nigeria's Image – Ibori by nawaforweo: 6:24am On Mar 01, 2012
LAGOS, - Former governor of Delta State, James Ibori has denied ever pleading guilty to corruption and fraud charges at a London court.

Speaking through his media assistant, Tony Eluemunor, who told reporters that James Ibori pleaded guilty to money laundering charges because he was trying to protect the integrity and image of Nigeria; a move to prevent a prolonged and further dragged matter after 9 years legal battle with authorities and also in order to enable the former Governor to start a life rebuilding process.

He said “the world was made to believe that Ibori’s guilty plea was a sudden turn around and not a well-deliberated act that was part of a plea bargain deal. But it’s on record that several Nigerian newspapers and media houses as of last Sunday published different versions of that story, that Ibori would plead guilty as part of a plea bargain arrangement"

“Of course, that plea bargain deal would only kick in with Ibori’s pleading guilty, which he did on Monday. After that plea, which had been successfully foretold by Nigerian newspapers, both the prosecution and the defence counsel were to return on April 16 and 17 to make their needed statements” Tony Eluemunor lamented

“What was not clear to Nigerians was that the prosecution lawyers were labouring at damage control as the publication in several newspapers that leaked the secret out never disclosed that the seven-year investigation against Ibori had not only cost the British taxpayer £14 million but was funded by the Department of Foreign Development"

According to him, James Ibori has not pleaded guilty to any corruption charge(s) and that any of such is nothing but propaganda and was subsequently dropped by the London Metropolitan Police for lack of evidence.

The survey targeted football fans at match-day hang-outs and football gatherings of which a mammoth 20% of the fans responded to be Manchester United fans, English rival Chelsea are 2nd with 16% fans while 14% of the fans support Arsenal and Barcelona coming 4th with 10% as fans.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill revealed in 2008 that the club has more than 14million fans in Nigeria (making it its 4th largest fan base), a record which has greatly increased owing club’s consistent record of successes since then and also being the first top English club to play on Nigerian soil.

The Poll however revealed that Liverpool FC has the most loyal of supporters with a larger 87% of the respondents (who supports Liverpool) interviewed having supported the club since they last won the English Premier League title in 1990 followed by Arsenal with 62% of the respondents having supported the club before the signing of Nigerian international Kanu Nwakwo in 1999 and still supporting the club despite not winning a major trophy since 2005.

Details from Social Networking sites also supported this effect with a global fan base of 22m of Manchester United faithful on Facebook, Chelsea trail behind by an enormous wide margin of just 8.4m fans, Arsenal are 8.7m and Liverpool follows with a close 8m fan base. Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are 24m and 26m respectively, an achievement which football experts are quick to point to the fact of ‘Two Contestants Only’ in the Spanish La Liga.

Politics / Mustread Guys "obama Sotu Address: Where Is Goodluck Jonathan - Johnny Babybrain by nawaforweo: 5:37am On Jan 27, 2012
Hey Guys, I think i should share this with you.

Yesterday’s State of the Union Address by the President of the United States Barack Obama was no doubt another highly important address not just to Americans but to the entire world. A time to add to the pages of history books of the United States Presidential library one of the most respected, valued & remarkable speeches in American history.

Typically, here is one speech which highlights the successes and inadequacies (shall I use the word failure?) of the American entire system from politics, economy, international diplomacy, security et al; and as usual, just like the preceding speeches as far back as the first one delivered by George Washington in 1790, President Barack Obama didn’t disappoint.

Yes he didn’t disappoint! Like George Washington, Abe Lincoln, J. F Kennedy and even his predecessor and least intellectual George W. Bush (yes I said that). A highly intellectual but evasive speech delivering; an undeniable characterisation of a genius political leader. A speech nicely delivered like a FedEx package to-fro romantic lovers on Feb 14. A perfect speech rehearsed to make average Americans feel how worthy and great their ‘God’s own country’ is doing and how everything is going on smooth even when it may be the contrary.

True to it, here’s the irony, the American President didn’t mention his country is broke, he didn’t mention Americans are borrowing 1 out of every 3 dollars they spend, the price of gas (fuel) has doubled up since he took office 3 years ago and he probably forgot to mention that, America’s acclaimed back-on-the-roll economy is built on borrowed money, investors are running to China and that country’s fast closing the gap on becoming the world’s biggest economy and lastly he ignored the fact that credit rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) has downgraded the credit ratings of the US for the first time in its history; a nightmare for investors, a nightmare for any thinking President.

As much as it’s easy to dwell on how his speeches were adequately filled with various successes and how the country should move forward whilst ignoring the shortcomings I aforementioned, we all can agree that speeches are a fast way to start and that’s an undeniable prerogative of a willing leader. Such speeches send oppositions shivering and make critics look ordinary, and yesterday even House Speaker and Obama's arguable number 1 political enemy, Republican John Boehner concurs.

Apparently, we saw a President who was comfortable being the C-in-C; his speeches were coherent, direct & perfected (even if rehearsed). We saw a president who sends out strong messages to terrorists “Our existence cannot be challenged…Human dignity can't be denied”. We heard a daring leader declared "Anyone who tells you that America is in decline or that our influence has waned, doesn't know what they’re talking about" and a challenging leader sending out a strong message to opposing countries "I’m announcing the creation of a Trade Enforcement Unit charged with investigating unfair trading practices in countries like China."

On jobs & slow economic recovery which oppositions and critics are slamming him for, he defiantly fired back ““Some of this has to do with the corrosive influence of money in politics. So together, let’s take some steps to fix that. Send me a bill that bans insider trading by Members of Congress, and I will sign it TOMORROW”

Simply and easily put, he bragged about his successes which the world need not be reminded of anyway and quoting his words thus:

“For the first time in nine years, there are no Americans fighting in Iraq. For the first time in two decades, Osama bin Laden is not a threat to this country. Most of Al Qaeda’s top lieutenants have been defeated. The Taliban’s momentum has been broken, ”.

“My message is simple. It’s time to stop rewarding businesses that ship jobs overseas, and start rewarding companies that create jobs right here in America. Send me these tax reforms, and I’ll sign them right away”

“The opponents of action are out of excuses. We should be working on comprehensive immigration reform right now. But if election-year politics keeps Congress from acting on a comprehensive plan, let’s at least agree to stop expelling responsible young people who want to staff our labs, start new businesses, and defend this country. Send me a law that gives them the chance to earn their citizenship. I will sign it right away”

“That’s why I’m sending this Congress a plan that gives every responsible homeowner the chance to save about $3,000 a year on their mortgage, by refinancing at historically low interest rates. No more red tape. No more runaround from the banks.”

Now, that’s the typical leader whose words clearly roll the carpet of his actions. Anyone walking along with his talks can clearly see the laden carpet and without bias draw a line of conclusion, he is a working President.

Back home in Nigeria, it’s a different ball game. We have a dysfunctional leader whose level of cluelessness is analogous to the level of ignorance of those who voted him to power based on sentiments & cheap superstitious beliefs. We have a President whose words are rightly & easily dismissed by terrorist groups & militancy circles.

We have a leader whose speeches (even whilst reading monosyllabically from an imperfectly jotted notebook) lack efficacy, coherence, strength, vitality and an obvious sign of disconnect away from his citizens. Speeches like the 2011 Independence Day Speech or President Jonathan's address at the 66th UN General Assembly are nothing but unconvincing and boring to say the least.

We’ve been blessed with a mesmerising but incorrigible Goodluck of a President who dares to tell the entire world ‘he is not a lion’ even when terrorists around the world are hungry lions looking for who to devour? A leader of the so-called ‘African Giant’ who lost his voice until the last day of conflict when Egypt and Libya was under siege, and his citizens being attacked and targeted.

Most unacceptable and unbelievable is a President who tells us to live with terrorism as a new trend amongst us? His excuses and those of his cabinet ministers during the Fuel Subsidy Removal (which I support but with diplomatic reasons especially when perfectly implemented) are baseless and highly unsubstantiated.

Sincerely yours, I could go on and on and bore you with an entire 300 pages of failures of the Goodluck Jonathan administration of governance in Nigeria. However, when the speeches & body culture of leaders do not parallel with the mindsets, opinions & demands of the people (even when contradictory), such is already enough codification for the weakness & incompetence of such leaders in its entirety.

Fair enough to Jonathan, he’s made a few remarkable (although imperfectly drawn up) statements, but he needs to learn one major rule of leadership & speeches; YOU WALK THE TALK – this Obama has fairly done, that Jonathan has refused to do.

In as much as we all can agree Nigeria’s got an incompetent and weak leader, someone who doesn’t seem (at least to me) ready to energise himself, brighten himself up like a sleeping giant and fight the temptations of political leadership anytime soon; can he at least start learning & mastering the act of speeches, body languages, word constructions & convincing skills; who knows what magic that would do?

Nigerians clearly do not have the luxury of time to wait till 2015 before we start counting our losses and clamouring for a change in leadership and that is if our congressmen do not help us easily & constitutionally before then anyway. Once again I repeat, if his speeches would do a magic where his actions obviously cannot, he better started doing that, we just do not have the luxury of time, lives and properties to waste anymore.

Today on Johnny Babybrain (oh that reminds me, here’s my first article on here under this platform for which I’m privileged to engage with you, I welcome you all on board). NOW HERE IS MY QUESTION: Reading President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech and the way he (like his predecessors) send strong signal messages through their speeches and comparing it to those of President Goodluck Jonathan & the entirety of his predecessors and circle of leadership at all levels of government in Nigeria, What do you see?

LONDON - Educated at an exclusive school in a picturesque patch of English countryside, Ghana-born trader Kweku Adoboli was known to neighbors as a polite and well dressed young man who mixed grueling hours in London's financial district with a lavish social life in the capital's nightspots.

But even the 31-year-old Adoboli, who was charged Friday with fraud and false accounting, appeared to foresee his work hard, play hard lifestyle unraveling. "Need a miracle," he posted on his Facebook page, just hours before his arrest early on Thursday.

Analysts and regulators were left questioning why Swiss banking giant UBS and its monitoring systems had failed to spot Adoboli's alleged fraud, which will cost about $2 billion in losses.

"Nobody blames the tiger for stalking its prey, but you do blame the zookeeper for leaving the tiger's cage open," said Stephen Brown, professor of finance at New York University's Stern School of Business.

Between 1992 and 1998, Adoboli was a boarder at Ackworth School, founded in the late 18th Century by Quakers, the religious organization which asks followers to develop a personal approach to religion.

["id":"rcomVideo_221601338","allowFullScreen":"true","allowScriptAccess":"always","wmode":"transparent","src":"http://www.reuters.com/resources_v2/flash/video_embed.swf?videoId=221601338&edition=BETAUS"]

Also known as the Religious Society of Friends, the Quaker faith stresses the importance of honesty and, according to the school's website, students are asked to observe periods of "reflective silence before meals," and attend regular worship meetings.

According to Vida Yeboah, a member of staff at the United Nations office in Ghana's capital Accra, John Adoboli, Kweku's father, had worked at the U.N. and was know by colleagues as a gentle, humble man.

The Times of London reported that Adoboli's father's worked in Ghana, Israel, Syria and Iraq — sending his son away to England to be educated.

At Adoboli's $31,500-a-year school, set in rolling countryside close to the town of Pontefract, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of London, Adoboli would have been taught the value of a peaceful, simple lifestyle.

Despite the childhood schooling in prudence, Adoboli lived in an expensive loft apartment in a trendy corner of east London — close to the capital's financial district — and discussed on his Facebook profile a fondness for fine dining.

Philip Octave, Adoboli's former landlord, said he left the 4,000 pounds ($6,300) per month apartment four months ago. "He was a very nice guy, very polite. He would speak to anybody. I haven't got a bad word to say about him," Octave said.

"He was very well spoken and dressed very smartly. He was a very quiet chap, actually," he added.

According to his social media profiles, Adoboli embraced his bustling and ethnically diverse area of east London — once downtrodden, but now home to well-paid traders and bankers working at nearby financial firms.

A favorite local nightspot was The Boundary, a swank rooftop bar and restaurant with views across London's banking district, known for its $1,200 magnums of champagne and pricey menu of seafood and traditional British game.

Adoboli also listed interests including expensive wine, photography and the gritty U.S. crime drama "The Wire" on Internet profiles, and disclosed he had been dating a nurse for at least a year. The banker said he enjoyed traveling to France, the U.S. and returning to Ghana to visit his parents.

After he graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2003 with a degree in e-commerce and digital business, Adoboli won a job with UBS as trainee investment adviser in 2006 — rising through the company to join its equities desk.

The trader's LinkedIn profile confirmed he worked on a desk known as Delta One and worked with exchange-traded funds — which track different types of stocks or commodities, such as precious metals. Adoboli and colleagues performed similar work to Jerome Kerviel, who gambled away $6.7 billion at French bank Societe Generale.

Brown said that banks have shown a tendency to fail to spot cases where ambitious and intelligent employees run into difficulty.

"These top banks hire the best and brightest ambitious young people and when they outperform everyone else the bankers want to believe in their brilliance so they look the other way," said Brown. "That's exactly what happened at UBS."

Brown drew parallels with the case of Nick Leeson, the Singapore-based trader who brought down British bank Barings in 1995 after he made around $1.4 billion of losses in unauthorized trades. Law firm Kingsley Napley, which represented Leeson, confirmed on Friday that it had been hired to represent Adoboli.

Kimberly Krawiec, a law professor at Duke University, in Durham, N.C., agreed that the culture inside UBS would need scrutiny following Adoboli's arrest.

"In the Kerviel case all the blame went to the rogue trader and Societe Generale got away with a slap on the wrist," Krawiec said. "That was a disappointing outcome because you have to accept there are broader forces at work when traders take on positions that are large enough to threaten large institutions and markets."

Nairaland / General / Is It Fair For A Court To Rule That A Man Must Live With His Hiv Infected Wife? by nawaforweo: 6:13pm On Sep 16, 2011
http://ascology.com/news/index.php?news=20110

TALKING POINT, - According to recent reports in a local Zimbabwean Newspaper that a court ordered a 38 year-old man to honour the 12 years marital vow he made to his wife who has been diagnosed with the HIV disease.

Authorities say the woman (whose name and that of his husband are being kept confidential to protect their privacy) through his lawyer asked the court to dishonour the divorce suit filed by the husband last November as a result of her health developments.

However, the court not only chose to dishonour the divorce suit filed by the husband but also ordered the man to 'put an end to the separated life' he has been living away from the wife; a ruling which will also make it a compulsion for him to leave with his health-challenged wife under same roof.

Although it is not determined if the man has been infected with the disease himself, it was reported the man had been separated from the infected woman for more than three (3) years before he finally filed for divorce.

Touching stories from The Avert Organisation and One Tough Pirate revealed that relatives and families of those living with HIV/AIDS diseases have the phobia of being infected - the phobia itself being the main reason for reluctance and disinclination to live with them.

Here's our question for you, while it should be agreed and uncontroversial that those living with life-threatening diseases such as HIV/AIDS are meant to be cared for, loved and not discriminated; Is the compulsion of living with them (as illustrated in this story) acceptable and legally fair? Your opinions!

BREAKING UPDATE: Stosur stuns Serena to win US Open.

In one of the most stunning upsets in US Open history, Australian Samantha Stosur shocked 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, 6-2, 6-3, to win her first major title.

Stosur kept her composure to win 6-2, 6-3 as Williams erupted in anger at the chair umpire in the second set, dominating the 13-time Grand Slam champion who had reached the final without dropping a set.

She became the first Australian woman to take the title in New York since Margaret Court in 1973, and the first to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon in 1980.

http://ascology.com/news/green360/editorials-avenue/19900-Behold-the-Fluid-donor-father-with-150-kids.html

TALKING POINTS, - When Cynthia Daily decided to take the step of letting a Fluid donor father her child, little did she envisaged the potential consequences of such an action.

According to a New York times Article, she used a donor registry to find out that her Fluid donor has fathered over 150 kids with growing numbers too.

Experts are however taking a look at the potential threats such steps could cause such as an increased risk for rare genetic disorders and accidental Inbreeding. Experts are also calling on US regulators to regulate the donor-bank industry as done in several countries.

The advantages of Fluid donations are vast and wide in its own little capacity without doubt, although many infertile couples as well as those with disabilities could take consolation in such a medical system but at what cost?

Such systems are highly recognised within the ranks of medical institutions in Western and developed countries, but what potential threats (no matter how little) should developing countries like Nigeria be on the lookout for if and when such medical operations are carried out under our nose without any governmental institution caring to check into the 'Fluid donor industry'

According to the report, countries such as Sweden, Britain and France limits how many children a Fluid donor can father, but not the United States and not even a plan yet for such systematic procedures to be developed, checked, coordinated or monitored in Nigeria.

How then are we able to check into illegal practices such as ill-medical practices & child trafficking?

Laughable enough, Wendy Kramer, founder of the Donor Sibling Registry claims that only 20-40% of mothers register the child birth of Fluid donor children; the multi-million dollar questions in this part of the world are - who's monitoring such developments and at what regulations (voluntarily or involuntarily)? What guidelines are put in place and what are our medical practitioners saying to the government and the member public?

According to Kramer, many parents are however shocked to find out how many half siblings their children have (invisibly) when checking the donor registry.

“They think their daughter may have a few siblings,” Ms. Kramer said, “but then they go on our site and find out their daughter actually has 18 brothers and sisters. They’re freaked out. I’m amazed that these groups keep growing and growing.”

Away from the negative consequences Fluid donation may pose, if however such a systematic procedure of child birth is not in this part of the world yet, then it is safe to say that we are still far from civilization and human advancement.

But what could be more special about this so-called Fluid donor that women turned to him to father over 150 kids? Matthew E. Kahn wrote on Environmental and Urban Economics that such a Fluid donor father should be greatly rewarded rather than raising questions over his '150 kids'. Could this man have earned so much from Fluid donation if an article like this is found consequential?

If that's the case, shouldn't developing countries like Nigeria be a 'hot cake' for such systems especially when child trafficking is high in this part of the world and many traffickers could take advantage of our poor medical monitoring system.

All-in-all, as much as we can agree with the fact that the Nigerian government is yet to identify the insatiable need for science, technology, civilization and modernization methodologies in solving the vast problems facing the country, yet can we not check into the dangers they possess?

http://ascology.com/news/local-news/19889-Where-The-Jonathan-Elected.html

OPINIONS & SENT - Since President Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in on 29 May 2011, insecurity has worsened, unemployment has skyrocketed, inflation has risen and the judiciary is in tatters. And Nigerians are asking, ‘where is the president we elected?’

At the ballots, Nigerians endorsed Jonathan overwhelmingly across the nation, giving him over 60 percent of votes cast, ten million more than votes recorded by his closest rival, Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC.

Indeed, out of about 37 million Nigerians who voted on Saturday, 16 April, 2011, 22 million voted for the president, giving him the strong mandate he needed to begin the process of fixing the comatose economy, reducing the high unemployment rate and improving the epileptic power supply.

Nigerians also anticipated that Jonathan would stop the skyrocketing inflation, save the tumbling aviation industry and give hope to millions of Nigerians who had become alienated by wasteful years of corruption and inefficiency in government.

For decades, political pundits had argued that to move forward, Africa’s most populous nation and second biggest economy needed an intellectual to man its affairs. Jonathan, a Ph.D holder and former university lecturer, was indeed seen as the saviour the country had been waiting for.

But, 100 days after he assumed office, the expectations of Nigerians for their president, have fallen to an abysmal low level. Indeed, Nigerians have written him off.

Before he was elected, he had ruled the country for one whole year after he took over from the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Jonathan orchestrated his own woes. Indeed, shortly after his inauguration, Nigerians were flabbergasted that the president had directed the National Assembly to amend the constitution for single term tenure of six years for future presidents and governors.

And while they were still trying to come to terms with the sinister move, Boko Haram, the Islamic sect, intensified its bomb attacks across the nation, with the president appearing to be clueless on how to tackle it.

The Police Headquarters was bombed on 17 June. The fortified United Nations office in Abuja was bombed on 26 August. Many other explosions have been witnessed across the country with scores of people killed in the process.

This is in addition to thousands of people killed by rioters in northern Nigeria after the presidential election. Jos, the Plateau State capital is boiling and scores are being killed daily.

Hafiz Ringim, the Inspector General of Police, who does not know how to make Nigerians safe, has remained on the job. The head of the State Security Service is still on the job and other security chiefs have not been replaced.

As the economy tumbles and insecurity worsens, the president seems to have diminished so much that Nigerians are wondering whether their president operates from Afghanistan.

As at today, according to government figures, 47 million Nigerians are unemployed and those who have unsteady jobs find it hard to make ends meet.

Nigerian youths are even worse off now than before Jonathan took over. And as if that was not big enough to swallow, Jonathan violated the spirit of the Nigerian constitution by dabbling post-haste into the dispute between the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the President of the Appeal Court, even when the matter was still in court, in a manner critics said was partisan.

Our president must get his priorities right and get rid of those who have failed the nation as fast as he can. He must tell Nigerians his plans to revive the economy, create jobs, reduce inflation and make Nigeria great again.

Celebrities / D'banj's Hit Single 'oliver Twist' Not Banned by nawaforweo: 10:45pm On Sep 02, 2011
http://ascology.com/news/entertainment/19748-DBanjs-hit-single-Oliver-Twist-not-banned.html

LAGOS, - Recent reports indicating that hit-single 'Oliver Twist' from multi-award winning Mo' Hits and Good Music star D'Banj produced by Don Jazzy was banned was sharply refuted by the NBC today.

"We have no reason to ban any song that has no tendency to cause turmoil, crisis or affects the integrity of persons, individuals, groups or society at large" spokesperson to the National Broadcasting Commission says.

"There are many other rules and regulations which govern airplays on Nigerian broadcasting media and as far as I am concerned the song has not breached any and such reports indicating it was banned are untrue"

It would be recalled that the hit-single 'Oliver Twist' by the famous 'Koko Master' D'banj received wide airplays and credits from critics and fans alike.

It also threw fans into deep comic mood when iconic producer Don Jazzy opened a Youtube competition tagged 'Oliver Twist Video Competition' aimed at showcasing how entertaining fans could be following the success of the just concluded 'Enigma' competition.

The song continued to receive airplays from radio stations across Nigeria as of the time of filing this report with radio stations in Lagos such as EKo FM, Top Radio and Unilag FG among those playing the song continuously to prove how untrue such a rumour is.

In further confirming the authenticity of this story, emails and calls aimed at reaching the NBC's Head of Public Relations Unit Awwalu Salihu were not immediately returned.

Such news would be widely received by practitioners after witnessing songs from artists such as Jahborne, Nkem Owoh, 2Shotz.

However entertainment stakeholders and fans are demanding reasons from the commission on why a song that was receiving wide and deserved airplays suddenly went into eclipse on radio stations.

And Serena Williams also won her match

NEW YORK, - Serena Williams stormed into the second round of the US Open tennis championships on Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Serbian teenager Bojana Jovanovski.

She was all smiles after the win, a marked contrast to her last singles appearance at the US Open, when her 2009 semi-final against Kim Clijsters ended amid jeers after she unleashed a tirade of abuse at a lineswoman.

The ugly outburst in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat eventually earned Williams a fine of $82,500, but she said on the eve of this year's tournament that the episode was long behind her.

Oh thanks your welcome. Its good to see your thread went far, i wish we can take this to that same height too. And nooo we Tennis fans are not yeye oooo. lol. About Kvitova crashing out to a Romanian, well I think (unlike the Men), many random people are coming out now and another Romanian has kicked out Li Na the French Open Champion. IN THE FIRST ROUND OOOOO. Ok here are the updates below.

Tennis - US Open DAY 2: The US Open is getting more interesting; Two Grand Slam winners are out already!! Following yesterday's crashing out of Wimbledon champ Kvitova , French Open Champ Li Na also crashed out unbelievably in the 1st round of the US Open to another Romanian teenager Simona Halep as top dogs Nadal, Federer and Djokovic cruised through. Read the updates below.

French Open champ Li out of US Open  -

NEW YORK, - Romanian teenager Simona Halep stunned French Open champion Li Na 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday in the first round of the US Open tennis championships.

Halep, ranked 53rd in the world, needed just an hour and 33 minutes to dispatch China's sixth-ranked Li, who became the first Grand Slam champion from Asia with her victory at Roland Garros.

Since that triumph, Li has become a heroine in her homeland, but she has struggled on the court, losing in the second round at Wimbledon to eventual semi-finalist Sabine Lisicki.

Her run to the semi-finals at New Haven last week marked the only time she has put back-to-back match wins together since Roland Garros.

"I really wanted to do well after Roland Garros," she said. "But it's not easy to do. Now I lose all the confidence on the court.

"I was feeling, 'Oh, tennis is just too tough for me.'"

It's a far cry from the confident face that Li presented earlier this year, when she reached the final of the Australian Open, then made her breakthrough triumph with victory over defending French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

The victory, watched by 116 million Chinese, catapulted Li among the country's sporting greats, generating frenzied media coverage and a massive boost for tennis in the world's most populous nation.

Now, Li said, she feels she's playing with a target on her back, with other players raising their level when they face her.

"Because after they beat you, they think, 'Oh, I beat a Grand Slam champion,'" she said.

Li, who showed she is not afraid to shake things up when she sacked her husband as coach and started working with Denmark's Michael Mortensen, said it might be time to make changes again.

"Before the match, I talked to my coach. I said I didn't have good timing to hit the ball. He told me everything is perfect, everything is fantastic.

"I say, 'Yes, everything is fantastic, but I always lose first round.'

"This is not fantastic. I think we need to change something. I think maybe the coach just tried to give me confidence, but I don't think I got it."

On Tuesday, Li looked out of sorts from the start, and Halep, 19, took full advantage to notch her first victory over a top-10 player in four attempts.

After taking the opening set, Halep gained an early break to lead 3-1 in the second.

Li squandered a golden opportunity when she failed to convert a triple break point in the sixth game.

Li finally managed to get the second set back on serve in the eighth game, then held to take a 5-4 lead.

In the end, however, she couldn't overcome 54 unforced errors -- the last a backhand long on match point.

Li's exit leaves the women's field without all three of this year's Grand Slam champions.

Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters, winner of the last two US Open titles, is absent with a stomach muscle injury. Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova lost on Monday, falling to another Romanian, Alexandra Dulgheru.

http://ascology.com/news/sports/tennis/19691-French-Open-champ-out-Open.html

NEW YORK, - Five-time champion Roger Federer relishes the US Open stage -- he's just not so sure about the court surface at the 2011 edition of the year's final Grand Slam.

"It's definitely slower," Federer said of the court surface in Arthur Ashe stadium. "It takes some getting used to.

"The issue for me is maybe did they make a mistake. Maybe they did paint the court a bit too rough.

"It's just unfortunate I think that maybe all the Slams are too equal. I think this should feel very different to the Australian Open, and now I don't feel it really does."

It didn't stop Federer from reaching the second round with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Colombian Santiago Giraldo.

Federer, owner of 16 Grand Slam titles, equalled Andre Agassi for the second-most Grand Slam match victories in the Open era with his 224th -- nine fewer than Jimmy Connors.

"It's just another way of saying 'Roger, you've been doing many right things throughout your career,'" he said of the impressive stat. "It points me in the right direction."

The Swiss great wasn't at his sharpest, dropping his serve three times and making 35 unforced errors.

Even so, the outcome against the 54th-ranked Giraldo -- who has never beaten a top-10 player -- was never in doubt.

That was all that mattered to Federer, who told the crowd afterwards that winning is "the only thing, really."

The third-seeded Swiss needed one hour and 46 minutes under the lights on the Arthur Ashe stadium court to advance to a meeting with Israel's Dudi Sela, who beat Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0.

Federer, who turned 30 earlier this month, is trying to win his first Grand Slam title since the 2010 Australian Open -- and keep alive his streak of eight straight seasons with at least one Grand Slam crown.
Federer eased through - http://ascology.com/news/sports/tennis/19672-Federer-reaches-Open-2nd-round.html

NEW YORK, - All-conquering Novak Djokovic found the going even easier than expected at the US Open on Tuesday, as food poisoning hampered the challenge of first-round opponent Conor Niland.

The qualifier from Ireland, ranked 197th in the world, wasn't expected to pose much problem for Djokovic, who has surged to the top of the world rankings with nine titles this season -- including two Grand Slams.

But a bout of food poisoning that lingered from Sunday morning had left the 29-year-old Niland physically weakened, and Djokovic needed just 44 minutes to take a 6-0, 5-1 lead before Niland called it a day.

"I felt great on the court, and that's something that's really important for the start of the tournament," Djokovic said of his abbreviated appearance on the Arthur Ashe stadium.

The quick match may prove a boon for Djokovic, who suffered just his second defeat of the season when he retired from the Cincinnati final against Andy Murray this month with a sore shoulder.

"I don't think I'm lacking any time on the court or matches," said Djokovic, who has now won 58 of his 60 matches this year.

"This year has been a very long year. So I really don't mind that I spend less time on the court."

Djokovic was part of a stellar line-up on the Ashe court on Tuesday along with women's world number one Caroline Wozniacki, defending men's champion Rafael Nadal and 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.

Wozniacki cruised into the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over 125th-ranked Nuria Llagostera Vives.

Politics / Cholera Kills 35 In Yobe, Sokoto by nawaforweo: 4:37pm On Aug 30, 2011

Cholera has killed 35 people in two northern Nigerian states in recent days, officials said Tuesday, with outbreaks frequent in the country during the rainy season.

"We have recorded 33 deaths from a cholera outbreak which infected 690 people in six (districts) in the last four days," said Fatsuma Talba, Yobe state health commissioner.

She said health personnel and drugs were being dispatched to the affected areas.

In Sokoto state, two deaths and 70 infections were recorded over the last week, said state Health Commissioner Abdullahi Maigwandu.

The highly contagious intestinal infection is transmitted by water soiled by human waste. The disease leads to diarrhoea, dehydration and death if untreated.

Cholera outbreaks occur regularly during the rainy season in Nigeria, when downpours wash contaminants into wells used by families.

The rainy season typically runs from April to September.
