A total of 3,500 women from six local government areas on the banks of River Hadejia in Jigawa State have received training on techniques of parboiling paddy rice. The training involved using locally made implements for processing paddy into clean, polished and unbroken rice. The women underwent the four-day training facilitated by Atafi Agro- Merchandise Service Limited, Hadejia, in collaboration with a German development partner, GIZ Cari (Geselischaft lur International Zusammenarbeit West African Rice). The training, targets 6,000 women, is aimed at empowering individual women to process paddy in their homes. After the training, each of the women can process as much as two bags of 100 kg paddy per day. The modern technique requires only the usual pot, the size of which depends on the quantity, a tarpaulin, sieve, a clean piece of cloth for drying, and false bottom, which is the only imported implement. The false bottom, which is now replicated locally, is the implement that makes the difference in the entire process as it is what controls the regulating process to give the required temperature for steaming. Unlike in the traditional method where the paddy is parboiled in water, with this method, it is processed through steaming, which makes it easy to be milled. Hajiya Salamatu from Ganuwar Kuka in Auyo Local Government Area is a beneficiary of the training and she shared her experience thus: “We were introduced to modern and simple techniques for paddy rice processing. This has improved our economic status as our product is now hot cake in the market.’’ Explaining the procedure in processing the paddy rice under the new technique, Salamatu who is a women leader, said, “The first step is to clean the paddy by winnowing out all the debris, washing it very clean, drying it and then steaming it by using your false bottom.” She added that the false bottom was a small implement that would be placed at the bottom of the pot with small quantity of water under, which helped in steaming the paddy rice. “It is then dried off half way in the sun and under the shade before it is finally taken for milling,” she explained. She said in the market their product is not only the best but enjoys higher price than those locally processed. Jummai Mohammed, another woman at the training, said she could process as much as a bag of 100kg in a day because she had become more conversant with the entire process and that it did not require western education to master. The Director and Acting Secretary of Atafi Agro-Merchandise Service Ltd, Mohammed Auwal, said his company, in collaboration with GIZ Cari, organised the training on nutrition and parboiling for the women, saying 3,500 participants had already been trained and that plan was underway to train another set of 2,500 https://thefarmersdiary./2017/08/18/jigawa-women-shown-new-ways-of-parboiling-paddy-rice/amp/ |
https://thefarmersdiary./2017/08/15/fg-spends-n6-2bn-to-feed-pupils-in-14-states/amp/ The federal government yesterday said it had spent over N6.2 billion to feed about 3,000,000 pupils under its National Homegrown School Feeding Programme in pursuit of its Social Investment Programme (SIP). The federal government has raised the alarm on the rising demand for beef in the country, vis-a-vis its availability, saying the gap could lead to the scarcity of beef and dairy products in the country. The outlook was given by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, at a meeting with members of the Governing Councils of the three Federal Universities of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Makurdi and Umudike. Ogbeh said the country was consuming more cows per day than it was actually breeding, warning that if the disparity was not controlled, it would not be long before the country runs out of beef supply. Lagos State, according to him, has the largest consumption share of 6,000 cows per day. He added that the daily demand for cow meat was equally high in the FCT and five other states including, Rivers, Abia, Imo, Oyo, and Kano. “We are consuming more cows than we are calving. Lagos State alone consumes 6,000 cows per day. Add the figure from Rivers, Abia, Imo, Oyo, Kano States and FCT, it might not be long before we run out of beef,” Ogbeh said. He described the local cattle breed as about the least in the world, adding on the average Nigerian cows produce less than a litre of milk per day. According to World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates, Nigeria needs about 1.5 billion litres of milk annually. Ogbeh said due to the gap, government was spending billions to import powdered and reconstituted milk of low quality without any effect as 37 per cent of Nigerian children are malnourished. He appealed to the university community to rise up to the challenges by teaching people artificial insemination, saying their prompt response is key towards resolving the crises. The minister explained that Nigeria cattle produce low dairy yields daily arising from undernourishment and the grazing system for pasture. “In East Africa, they achieve 15 litres, some 20 litres. In Europe, they achieve 50 litres. The secrets are breeds and nutrition. Here, the roaming cows look lean, with poor meat quality. Cows are not meant to march around. They are not horses,’’ he said. The minister also enjoined the agriculture universities to be more innovative and enterprising by making it mandatory for every undergraduate to own a farm from 200 level to graduation while examinations should dwell 60 per cent on the success on the farm and 40 per cent on academic work. https://thefarmersdiary./2017/08/15/fg-warns-of-beef-dairy-products-scarcity/amp/ |

Some foods are meant to go together: eg bread and tea, pap and akara, rice and stew etc. I know we Nigerians like to combine everything in the name of food but there are certain people who take it an extra mile. I once mentioned a former neighbour who I caught drinking garri with boiled egg. The yorubas renamed palm oil beans to ewa goin and now they use its new name to combine everything they can with it. Some food combinations even sound gay e.g potatoes and bread; and lesbian eg boiled egg and beans. Here are 10 bizarre food combinations I have seen people eat with my two korokoro eyes. 1. Peppersoup and bread Its surprising that a 5 star restaurants offer this on their menu. How does one combine this? A bite of bread and two sips of peppersoup. Thanks, I’ll pass. 2. Rice and Okro I don’t even like okro to begin it. Now imagine someone having okro with rice when there’s stew or sauce. I remember visiting a friend and she asked her sister to serve me food. Lo and behold, it was rice and okro which I outrightly rejected. I have friends guilty of this disgusting combination 3. Rice and Egwusi Soup To be honest I wonder why people would rather have soups with rice rather than swallow’ which it was made for. The only soup allowed with rice is peppersoup and banga soup. – Frank Nweke Junior, 2001 Others include: thers include, https://thefarmersdiary./2017/07/23/10-weird-food-combinations-nigerians-eat/amp/ |

Cancer crusher Sprinkle on this spice to calm a cold, detox your skin, and even help fight cancer. A little pepper may go a long way with your health—it might even help ward off breast cancer. A chemical compound in peppercorns called piperine may be able to help prevent a breast cancer tumor from developing, a University of Michigan Cancer Center study suggests. Pepper’s potential cancer-preventing properties are heightened when it’s paired with turmeric; combine the two in a delicious Indian-style dish, such as yellow curry. Laundry aid Are your favorite clothes starting to fade? Grab your pepper shaker! The spice may keep colors vibrant longer, says Karyn Siegel-Maier, author of The Naturally Clean Home. Sprinkle about a teaspoon of ground pepper per load, along with detergent, into your washing machine at the start of the wash cycle. It will drain away with the water, so there’s no extra cleanup Skin scrub Get a smoother, clearer complexion with a scrub made from—you guessed it—pepper. It stimulates your circulation to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the surface of your skin, and the grains help slough off dead cells, says Wendy Allred, education manager at Bliss Spa. Try her clarifying at-home scrub: In a bowl, combine 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup unscented massage oil, 6 drops orange essential oil, and a pinch of ground pepper; stir together with a spoon. Rub the scrub onto wet skin in the bath or shower, wash off, then enjoy the lingering spicy scent (and your buffed body). Cold tamer All stuffed up? Pepper is a natural decongestant—it contains chemicals that irritate your mucus membranes, making them produce a thinner, more watery mucus (translation: giving you a runny nose) to help clear out your nasal passages, explains Neil Schachter, MD, a professor at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and author of The Good Doctor’s Guide to Colds and Flu. Just add a few pinches of pepper to a bowl of chicken soup—the perfect comfort food when you’re sick—and you’ll soon be breathing easier Color cues Black, white, and green peppercorns are all fruit of the same plant, so you can use them interchangeably. Their flavors differ: Black pepper is hot and pungent, white pepper is hot but less aromatic, and green pepper has a fresher flavor. Pick the one that suits your palate. https://thefarmersdiary./2017/07/12/surprising-benefits-of-pepper/amp/ |
