OBASANJO'S RESPONSE ON BBC'S HARDTALK.

“My friends who are not from the East of Nigeria where Igbos come from often ask me why there is so much anger in the East and among Igbos. Some wonder why, despite the famed Igbo” wealth’ and enterprise all over Nigeria, the people still complain that Nigeria is unfair to them. Some insinuate that the anger comes from the loss of the 2015 election by Jonathan who the Igbos heavily backed.
And why is it that the current generation of Igbos are so angry as to contemplate carrying arms against the country? With lots following Nnamdi Kanu of IPOB with his secessionist message. Those not following Kanu may despise his antics and rhetoric but are sympathetic to his underlying message. And what is that message? That Igbos don’t feel wanted in Nigeria. That decades of official marginalization and discrimination should be stopped or they should be allowed to take their chances in a new nation.
First, for those who think this is all about Jonathan and Buhari. It is not. Igbos were disappointed that Jonathan did not win. But those whose candidates lose elections lick their wounds. It is allowed. It happens when your candidate loses election. Why did the Igbos invest so much emotions in Jonathan, a non-Igbo from Ijaw? It was more because of the fear of their experience in the past 50 years. Nigeria has placed an embargo on any Igbo man becoming Nigerian president and Igbos understand this.
Jonathan was the next best thing. Other parts of Nigeria have supported their sons to the presidency. Some have bombed Nigeria into submission to get their sons to Aso Rock. Igbos have little capacity to blackmail Nigeria to the presidency. They chose Jonathan as their “Igbo”. But that’s not to say that they are angry enough because he lost to contemplate going to war on his behalf. Jonathan was not really the model of a President the Igbo would go to war for. And even his Ijaw people have accepted his loss.
So? Igbo anger has been building up in Nigeria since the 70s. As kids, people made choices in other parts of Nigeria school years based on the narrative of the Igbo place in Nigeria. They knew about the glass ceiling against Igbos.
After the civil war, despite the “No winner, no vanquished” program, Nigeria placed glass ceilings and no-go areas for Igbos. The war reconstruction program was observed more in the breach. There was the “abandoned” property program that was introduced to drive a wedge between components of the former South-East Nigeria. While the country was too embarrassed to put the discrimination program down in an official gazette, it was there for anyone who cared to look. It was evident in the Igbo police officer who stayed in one position while less qualifies juniors progressed to become his bosses. It was evident when no Igbo qualified to become the Inspector General of Police, or lead any division in the armed forces. It was there when "sensitive" or "lucrative" positions were shared in Nigeria and Igbos were conspicuously absent.
It was there when Igbos were only fit enough to be made Minister of Information until Obasanjo administration came to power. And even recently, it was there when Buhari appointed 47 people to man the critical roles in his government and no one from the South east was there. Any time there is a federal appointment in Nigeria, its usually the east that is left to shout. It was there from Buhari first term as a Military Junta to his second coming and any other time in-between.
The Igbo elite called it marginalization. Other Nigerians countered by saying no part of Nigeria was getting enough. Marginalization was universal. But they forgot something. The Igbo cry of marginalization was official policy. It was expected. ----------to be continued.

Ali won an immediate rematch on points but it was another tight affair. Ken was handed a shot at fearsome champion, George Foreman in 1974. But Futch was no longer in his corner – Norton would later claim his management sacked him – and he went into the biggest fight of his career with relative stranger, Bill Slayton, as his new trainer.
The relationship did not begin well as a ferocious Foreman chewed up Norton in two rounds. Despite the wreckage, Slayton and Norton built a sturdy relationship.
“I thought Kenny was an arrogant, cocky guy who acted like he was better than anyone else,” Slayton recalled about their early meetings. “But I later learned that he’s a beautiful guy. He’d do anything in the world for a friend.”
Norton won seven straight – including wins over Jerry Quarry, Ron Stander and revenge over Jose Luis Garcia – before securing a 1976 rubber match with Ali, who had regained his title with a stunning win over Foreman.
The fight was held at Yankee Stadium in New York. Ali, showing the signs of a punishing career, was deemed lucky by many to cling onto his title but the men that mattered (referee Arthur Mercante, judges Harold Lederman and Barney Smith) gave the champion a unanimous decision. Norton was furious. “You don’t win!” he screamed at his nemesis at the end of the showdown. “I beat you, you son of a bitch. I beat you!”
He remained bitter about the decision until his dying day. But it was boxing he was angry with, not Ali.
“I admire the hell out of him,” Norton said, “I’ve always liked Ali. I liked him before we fought; I liked him after we fought. Just not during.”
Norton impressed in his next outing – a one-round drubbing of the hyped and unbeaten Duane Bobick – and followed it with a split decision over the awkward Jimmy Young in a November 1977 WBC eliminator. He wanted a fourth crack at Ali but the old man lost his title to Leon Spinks three months later. When Spinks decided to make his first defence against the man he took the title from, the WBC stripped him of their belt and awarded it to Norton.
He was the first heavyweight in history to win the title outside the ring (Lennox Lewis would be the second after the same organisation handed the Englishman their belt after Riddick Bowe had dumped it in a dustbin).
Norton – unlike Lewis – failed to make a successful defence but his reputation as a fighter should be enhanced by the night he lost his title. The 15-round war with Larry Holmes remains a glorious exhibition of heavyweight boxing. Courage and skill oozed from the combatants and, after 14 rounds, it came down to a winner-takes-all final three minutes. The final round was intoxicating but Holmes sealed the title by the slenderest of split decisions.
First-round losses to Earnie Shavers and finally, to the emerging Gerry Cooney in 1981, forced him out of the game with a record of 42-7-1 (33). He earned $16m along the way; second only to Ali at the time.
Five years later, after appearing at a fundraiser in Los Angeles, his Clenet Excalibur hit two curbs, plunged over the edge of the roadway and crashed into a tree.
Norton underwent surgery that saved his life but he was not the same man when he awoke. He couldn’t speak or walk, and his memory was shot. Ali performed magic tricks beside his hospital bed while his family prayed for him.
Norton regained his ability to walk, and despite deep and slurred speech, his health had improved by the time he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
Norton acted in several movies, most notably Mandingo (1975), in which he played the slave-turned-fighter Mede.
In addition to Ken Jnr, Norton’s survivors include his wife, Rose Conant; daughter Kenishia and two other sons, Keith and Kenny John.

On This Day: Heavyweight great Ken Norton passed away
Nduka Felix Uzuh, looks back at Ken Norton, a heavyweight destined to be remembered as a jawbreaker.
BREAKING Muhammad Ali’s jaw will always be Ken Norton’s claim to fame but the former WBC heavyweight champion, who died in 2013 aged 70 after a long illness, deserves to be remembered for so much more. Let’s also talk about his place in heavyweight history as one of the best in a great era; the physique that looked like it had been sculpted from golden marble; the hellacious dogfight with Larry Holmes; and the fierce determination that fuelled survival from a horror crash in 1986.

Norton was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, in 1943 and quickly developed the kind of self-confidence that only the physically blessed enjoy. His pristine physique was the envy of many and it developed effortlessly.

“I can only attribute it to good genes,” Norton explained in his 2000 autobiography. “I never worked out with weights, and that includes when I was boxing professionally.”

By the time Norton was in ninth grade, he measured almost six-foot, was an outstanding athlete, and cocky beyond his years. After mouthing off at the dinner table, his father threw a glass of water in his son’s face in an effort to cool the arrogance. The youngster unwisely challenged his maker to a fight, and after being flattened by a single punch, quickly realised that it takes more than muscles to rule.

His fight education continued after he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1964. “Damn Norton,” laughed Futch, “that photographer done got your best side in that picture. You gonna listen to me now?”

Norton paid attention to another lesson in the dangers of over-confidence. 13 wins and three years passed before Norton was matched against Muhammad Ali.

“Norton’s no mug but he hasn’t a chance with Ali,” was Boxing News’ verdict. He surprised everyone. Norton won a close decision over 12 and broke Ali’s jaw. Norton’s unconventional style was all wrong for “The Greatest”.

“Kenny gave Muhammad a hard time,” Ali’s trainer, the late Angelo Dundee, said. “I used to call it the ‘Hopalong Cassidy style.’ He took all the slickness out of Muhammad and you couldn’t time Kenny. He was such a good fighter and a big man. He used to bend down to neglect his own height and make things awkward.

On This Day: Heavyweight great Ken Norton passed away
Nduka Felix Uzuh, looks back at Ken Norton, a heavyweight destined to be remembered as a jawbreaker.
BREAKING Muhammad Ali’s jaw will always be Ken Norton’s claim to fame but the former WBC heavyweight champion, who died in 2013 aged 70 after a long illness, deserves to be remembered for so much more. Let’s also talk about his place in heavyweight history as one of the best in a great era; the physique that looked like it had been sculpted from golden marble; the hellacious dogfight with Larry Holmes; and the fierce determination that fuelled survival from a horror crash in 1986.

Norton was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, in 1943 and quickly developed the kind of self-confidence that only the physically blessed enjoy. His pristine physique was the envy of many and it developed effortlessly.

“I can only attribute it to good genes,” Norton explained in his 2000 autobiography. “I never worked out with weights, and that includes when I was boxing professionally.”

By the time Norton was in ninth grade, he measured almost six-foot, was an outstanding athlete, and cocky beyond his years. After mouthing off at the dinner table, his father threw a glass of water in his son’s face in an effort to cool the arrogance. The youngster unwisely challenged his maker to a fight, and after being flattened by a single punch, quickly realised that it takes more than muscles to rule.

Rinsola Abiola, daughter of the late Bashorun Moshood Abiola and Special Assistant on New Media to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Rinsola made the announcement in a statement she personally signed on Friday.
She said her reason for quitting the party was due to the constraints limiting the reach of youth in APC.
According to her, she made series of consultations after the passage of the Not Too Young To Run Bill but was not convinced with the responses she got.
The Statement reads; ”I write to formally communicate my decision to relinquish membership of the All Progressives Congress. This has been a five-year journey during which I have met some very exceptional people and learned from you all.
”Last year, while we – youth advocates and those of us in political parties who fall within the youth demography – were advocating for passage of the Not Too Young To Run Bill, I approached a handful of our leaders and expressed my intention to run for office if the Bill scales through. Thankfully, this year, Not Too Young To Run became law and young people (from 25) can now seek to occupy elective positions.
”I began consultations in October 2017 but have now concluded that while legal constraints may have been done away with, there are greater challenges that we all must contend with. Apart from the usual issues like funding and violence, undemocratic dictates which are now (erroneously) viewed as the norm also pose a serious challenge. I have been told in no unclear terms that I “must not run”, that I “should not even consider it”, and that there are “consequences for disobedience”.
”I believe strongly that such things should not be tolerated in a democracy which many people fought for, with some of our heroes – my father inclusive – losing their lives in the process. I also believe that if those who fought for this democracy had listened to such veiled threats or even thought about the consequences that they might face, civil rule would not have been restored when it was.
”In 2013, I left youth activism for mainstream politics because I believed governance was a more efficient vehicle for bringing about change; there was nothing that I wanted more than to be part of the process of making this country work again and contributing my quota to national development. I believed – and still do – that there’s only so much that one can do to elevate the living conditions of one’s people as an individual, and that occupying a position with the backing of the Constitution gives a lot more power to change lives and in much greater numbers.
”I have always advocated for enhanced youth and women participation in politics; this is why I believe that simply accepting this situation or making peace with what can only be described as tyranny and injustice as some have advised me to, would make me both dishonest to myself and untrue to everything I’ve ever advocated for.
”I want to thank you all sincerely for everything you have done to help me grow and I hope that our relationship remains cordial irrespective of political leanings. I remain committed to the ideals which led me to join politics, and will join another party once I’m convinced that inclusion for youths and women is an issue they prioritise and that internal democracy truly matters.
”I certainly do not have it all figured out yet, but the conviction that led me to join APC now demands that I stand and fight not just for myself, but also for other women and young people in similar circumstances. Mine is a grossly underrepresented demography and injustice, in all its forms and irrespective of who perpetrates it, must be resisted. The decision of who gets to represent us is one that should be made by the people and it is not up to any individual, no matter how highly placed, to tell me that I must not even try.

Some Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress met with front-line presidential aspirant under the platform of Young Progressives Party (YPP) Prof. Kingsley Moghalu in a bid for the Former Nigeria’s Apex bank Deputy Governor to quit his Presidential ambition and support President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

Moghalu, LeadersNG learned, got the attraction of some power brokers close to the Presidency over his well articulated and cutout blueprint for a greater Nigeria. A presidency source told LeadersNG that the president heard of Moghalu’s presidential bid and has tasked his men to convince him to join his campaign train.

Professor Kingsley Moghalu is well accepted among the young people due to his oratory prowess, dynamism and wide knowledge of the socio-economic problems facing the country.

His campaign has focused on the core issues affecting the country and his nationwide meetings with opinion leaders, Stakeholders, youth groups and masses have proven his readiness to confront the country’s myriads of challenges.

LeadersNG gathered that in a meeting between the representatives of the president and that of the YPP aspirant, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, the Former CBN Deputy Governor was promised a ministerial role if the president wins re-election.

Another source in the know told LeadersNG that negotiations are ongoing and that the President men have promised to give Moghalu a juicy ministry.

“He has been offered Kemi Adeosun’s job. If the President wins re-election, he would drop the embattled minister of Finance who had been alleged to have forged her NYSC certificate”. – A presidency source told our correspondent.

When LeadersNG correspondent further probed the source concerning funding of Kingsley Moghalu’s campaign, the source revealed that some persons in the government may have been providing funds for the YPP aspirant which has enabled him to go round the country, set up a formidable media team helping to spread his agenda. But the source said he does not have much details about the Funding.

The Vice President, LeadersNG gathered is disposed to Moghalu whom he believes can do a better job in managing the country’s already battered economy than Kemi Adeosun. The VP had met with Moghalu even before the president’s men met with him.

You would recall that LeadersNG had reported about the #67MillionYouth Initiative of RED MEDIA which was solely to sway young voters for Nigeria’s Septuagenarian President re-election.

RED MEDIA, LeadersNG understands is the one managing Moghalu’s communications and town hall meetings across the country. The PR firm around February this year was contracted with the sum of One Hundred Million Naira to help manage Moghalu’s campaign.

An official in one of the government agencies told LeadersNG that it was the minister of Transport, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi that recommended RED MEDIA to Kingsley Moghalu and that the PR firm’s 67 Million Youth Initiative got further funding from the NNPC GMD and Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Elrufai.

If leadership ng, were not being economical with the truth, they would have provided proofs of their claims with factual informations and cheque documents of fund transfers from APC or rotimi amaechi , to YPP or Kingsley moghalu.
