congrats ....Mr. adewale....coding is the future. By the time am done with P.HD Applied finance, i should have built an app or software that will be able to predict stock prices with precision using the idea of fundamental and technical analysis

I earnestly look forward to that. Few years ago, I built a model for predicting US stock prices; however with a precision accuracy of about 56%.

Oh I don't like their food too lipsrsealed
For yams and plantains, I actually thought it was hard to get at first but I found it in an Asian store. They even sell cocoyam, yam and red oil. And it's cheap too

Russian store has yams too.
Fish is also cheap in Asian stores compared to german supermarkets
We buy meat directly from the company cause where I live has many meat processing industries around.
But I think you can get cheaper meat in Turkish and Russian stores.
There's what we call Grieß, it's eaten as a substitute for the Nigerian semovita. You can get them it.
Oh before I forget there's also okro in Asian shops

Will modify when I remember some things

Wow. Thanks!

Wo wohnst du? (Besides, I hope you don't mind me sending you a PM as I wouldn't want to derail this thread either..)

Hi. I'm sorry to interfere, I have been searching for yams and plantains at the grocery stores but I'm yet to find any. To be sincere, I can't eat their food here, it's just tasteless. I would be grateful if you can provide details of 'where to shop' and other 'how to adjust guides'.

Dankeschön.

calculator123:

hello Sir, I am still an undergraduate studying statistics in a federal university around. I want to get my MS and PhD in Statistics but at present, I have no clue about what full blown research entails.
please can you demystify it for me?
Hi.

I think I can give an hindsight to what you truly mean since I had my undergraduate degree in Statistics as well, however the advise I'd give are purely mine and is subjected to criticisms. I'd be giving anecdotes which I believe will help you also.

First, what do you truly want to do? A degree in statistics will open your eyes to many fields (supposing you're good enough) such as Data Science, Economics, Quantitative economics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Quantitative finance, and other fields that requires computing /calculations. I was once in your shoes, now I'm in a Quantitative Economics programme for my masters degree.

From the above, I believe you now know a degree in Statistics provides you with a wide range of options (provided your quantitative skills are good). However, since your question stated you're only concerned about "research ", I would implore you to decide what field you want to apply "your statistics" to - from this, you can now decide the research you want to delve into. Also, get some programming skills - Learning R or Python + SAS, Java or C++ won't hurt. In fact, I can categorically say, if you're proficient with any of these, research becomes easier as you would be faces with solving problems and where does research stem from? Problems of course!

Moreover, volunteer to analyze undergraduates projects, be closer to a lecturer in your department whom you know is smart [sic], take your thesis and internship (IT) seriously and when you're done? Write GRE and TOEFL, on your SOP state the above listed skills (provided you acquired them) and experiences; emphasize on how you believe these skills are useful in graduate school, how you believe you can succeed and how the department's requirements fits your description.

I'm sorry I can't explain further as I'm very busy, but please "graduate with a First Class degree or a very strong 2:1". I never regretted graduating the top of my school as it had opened lots of opportunities.

I would leave the rest to my boss (Baum1) and GboyegaD. We all have similar profile (BSc. Statistics). I hope they can contribute.

P. S: Pardon my grammar errors, I don't have time to edit anything now.

Best.

As a statistician, I would say his argument is very weak. In fact, all he has said is an "hypothesis " since he has no data or proof to back it up.

Besides, "Statistics don't lie, Humans do... "

And no one would blame you for that.

I remember few years ago, this guy was talking about DEPRESSION, SUICIDE, falling out of status and taking antidepressants drugs. I remember people here rallied round him (I won't mention names) but is this what THEY get for all the support?

Just today, you stated how someone assisted you before the end of the same day, you threatened him with a lawsuit, Why - because you know he works in a big company and you can get some cash or what?

I'm certain you won't win this case; I'm just worried your actions will inadvertently let the GOOD people we have here think twice before rendering help.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT ROLE

Who we are

Baum Tenpers Global Investments Ltd was formed to fill an existing void in allied research that combines academic and professional research activities relating to Nigeria and other parts of the world. We are a team of independent researchers with a focus on Africa, Europe and Asia. We provide academic and professional advisory and research to clients in these regions, with future plans to cover other parts of the world. Our broad services include

-Business and financial advisory
-Investment and project management
-Research, Training and Professional Consulting
-All-purpose Contracts Execution

What we want

As part of our expansion drive, mostly driven by a recent surge in demand for our services, we are looking to add a hardworking and determined individual to our small team. The successful person will work remotely as a research assistant, reporting to the principal research analyst, with a scope to develop into a fully-fledged research analyst and part-take of the associated benefits. This job is suitable for anyone based anywhere in Nigeria or elsewhere

Typical profile of a successful applicant

- Has OND/HND/Bachelors of Science Degree or higher from an institution in Nigeria and or elsewhere
- Studied at least one of Management/Economics/Finance/Accounting/Business Administration/Marketing/Sports (PE)
- Has excellent writing skills and can produce a coherent research commentary at short notice
- Possesses a computer with internet and has access to electricity, either through NEPA or otherwise, during work hours
- Can deliver good quality at all times, on or before deadlines, irrespective of how tight are the deadlines

Mode of work

Essentially a work-from-home job. The job requires a computer connected to the internet and steady access to electricity during work hours.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will
 Collect economic and finance data, summarize data
 Conduct research on the internet
 Handle requests from analysts
 Articulate research ideas in writing, from insights gained from data and directions given by analysts
 Compile information from multiple sources

Compensation

For any month worked, there is a minimum salary of NGN 30,000 and a maximum salary of NGN 60,000 only when assigned tasks are completed at reasonable levels as determined by the assigned supervisor. This means there is a guaranteed income of NGN 30,000 for any task reasonably completed in a month, no matter how little is the task. This income rises to NGN 60,000 depending on the volume and quality of work done. There is also a discretionary bonus during months of high loads of work.

Method of application

Send your application to baumtenpers@gmail.com. In your application file, include a CV and a recent writing sample (not a cover letter). The writing sample must be coherent, address an issue and should be a minimum of 4 pages and a maximum of 8 pages. As this is a writing-intensive role, applications without writing samples will unfortunately ‘not’ be considered. Academic writing samples are preferred.

Although we welcome those with some research experience, the role does not require any research experience. We however are only interested in applicants who have gained some academic research skills demonstrable in well-written research papers – final year projects, term papers and the likes.

Application Closing Date
7th August, 2017

Machine learning is not about algorithms.

When you open a textbook or a university syllabus, you'll often be greeted by a grocery list of algorithms.

This has fueled the misconception that machine learning is about mastering dozens of algorithms. However, it's much more than that...

Machine learning is a comprehensive approach to solving problems...

...and individual algorithms are only one piece of the puzzle. The rest of the puzzle is how you apply them the right way.

Sir, am very much with you. I started learning r language about 2 weeks ago. I am determined to master this programming language but I need help. With only basic statistics background, what are my chances in machine learning? So far, I have covered data types and structures in r, and am presently on control structures. Please, I'll be glad if you can follow through with this thread. Also, if you have time to spare, I will appreciate mentorship. Thanks.

Good day sir, I understand your plight perfectly but you have to continue with your personal learning, with time you would master it. More so, since you have a basic statistics background, i can't say it's enough but you can improve on it with time as you need to also improve on your mathematics to understand some topics.

Unfortunately, I don't have much time to spare but i have dedicated at least 45 minutes to this thread daily and I'm positive it will increase as i get response from others (i tend to be a good listener than talker). Now, i would love it if you can share any topic you read or any question you have on this thread though this will not divert the aim of this thread.

Thanks for reaching out, hope to hear from you soon!

I appreciate all your honest replies, i have to avoid stories that touches the heart.

1. I went to one of FedEx office in Port Harcourt to make inquiry on the prepaid courier service and i was told they don't give this to people and i have to pay (N3,700) for them to ship it to Lagos and another (N3,700) in order for the embassy to send it back to Port Harcourt. My question is, how do i get a prepaid courier service without wasting valuable time?

2. I was recently told to apply for long term visa after my Schegen visa application was rejected hence the embassy booked an appointment for me on July 12. My question is, do i have to send my transcript to the embassy for them to certify (and convert to its German equivalent) or i should go with it on the given day?

Thanks for taking your time to read this, i will be anticipating your replies.

Now, don't be scared by the terminologies you see above, you will master them all but more importantly know when to use them. The major challenge people face in machine learning is knowing what algorithm to use and when to use it. For example, people use linear regression when they ought to use logistic regression. Hey! i know what you're thinking, you recall i said i would place more emphasis on practice instead of talking right? My next post, i would introduce you to R and we move from there, how about that?
