Starting well is important.

But finishing well is also important.

Many people begin with passion but struggle to remain faithful when difficulties come.

Some start ministries and later become distracted.

Some begin relationships with commitment but eventually become careless.

Some start their Christian journey with enthusiasm but slowly lose spiritual discipline.

Paul understood the importance of finishing faithfully.

Near the end of his life, he wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7:

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

These are powerful words.

The Christian Life Is a Race
Hebrews 12:1 describes the Christian journey as a race.

The instruction is:

“Let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

Notice that the race requires patience.

Faith is not merely about a powerful beginning.

It requires endurance.

There will be seasons when you feel strong.

There will be seasons when you feel tired.

There will be victories.

There will be disappointments.

But the goal remains faithfulness.

Remove What Slows You Down
Hebrews 12:1 encourages believers to lay aside every weight and the sin that easily entangles.

Not everything that slows you down is necessarily sinful.

Some things may simply be distractions.

Too much entertainment.

Unhealthy relationships.

Excessive social media.

Unnecessary commitments.

Constant comparison.

Pursuing recognition.

Wisdom asks:

“Is this helping me run the race God has given me?”

Faithfulness Matters More Than Fame
The world often celebrates visible achievements.

But God values faithfulness.

A person may never become famous yet faithfully serve God for decades.

A parent may quietly raise children in the faith.

A teacher may influence generations without public recognition.

A church worker may serve behind the scenes.

A believer may pray consistently for years without anyone knowing.

Heaven's measurement is not always the same as the world's.

There is a significant difference between knowing about someone and knowing that person personally.

You can read someone's biography.

You can study their history.

You can watch interviews about them.

You can learn their achievements.

But none of these things automatically means you have a personal relationship with them.

The same principle applies to our relationship with God.

A person can know many facts about God without truly walking with Him.

Religious Information Is Not the Same as Relationship
Someone can memorize Bible verses.

They can explain Christian doctrines.

They can attend church regularly.

They can know the names of biblical characters.

They can discuss theology.

Yet Jesus warned about people who would possess religious activity without genuine relationship.

Matthew 7:22–23 describes people who did many things in Jesus' name but were ultimately told:

“I never knew you.”

This is a sobering statement.

It shows that religious activity alone does not guarantee intimate knowledge of God.

Paul Desired to Know Christ
Paul had extensive religious knowledge before encountering Christ.

He was educated and deeply familiar with Jewish religious tradition.

Yet after coming to Christ, he wrote in Philippians 3:10:

“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection.”

Paul already knew about God.

But he desired a deeper personal knowledge of Christ.

This is the heart of Christian spirituality.

God Invites Relationship
From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture presents God as One who desires relationship with humanity.

He called Abraham.

He walked with people.

He spoke through prophets.

He delivered Israel.

He revealed Himself through Scripture.

And ultimately, Christians believe He revealed Himself uniquely through Jesus Christ.

John 17:3 says:

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

Eternal life is described in relational terms.

Knowing God matters.

Jesus Reveals the Father
Jesus said in John 14:9:

“He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.”

Through Christ, believers see God's character expressed through love, mercy, holiness, truth, compassion and sacrifice.

Therefore, knowing Jesus is central to knowing God.

Success can be a blessing.

Promotion can be a blessing.

Financial increase can be a blessing.

Influence can be a blessing.

A growing ministry can be a blessing.

But success also carries a danger: pride.

When life begins going well, it becomes easy to forget the God who gave us the opportunity, strength, relationships and abilities that contributed to our progress.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says:

“But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth.”

The instruction is simple:

Remember God.

Success Can Change Perspective
When people struggle, they often pray intensely.

When the breakthrough comes, prayer can become less urgent.

When the business is small, the owner depends on God.

When the business becomes successful, self-confidence can gradually replace dependence.

When a ministry is starting, the leader may spend hours praying.

When the ministry grows, administration, recognition and influence may become the focus.

Success can quietly shift our attention.

Nebuchadnezzar Forgot
King Nebuchadnezzar became extremely powerful.

Daniel 4 records his pride as he looked at Babylon and attributed its greatness to his own power.

God humbled him.

Later, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God's sovereignty.

His story is a warning that achievement can become dangerous when we forget its ultimate source.

Joseph Rose to Power
Joseph provides a different example.

He became second in authority in Egypt.

He had influence, resources and responsibility.

Yet his story consistently points toward God's involvement.

Joseph told his brothers in Genesis 50:20 that God was able to work through what had happened.

Forgiveness is one of the most difficult expressions of Christian wisdom.

It is easy to forgive when the offense is small.

But what happens when someone deeply wounds you?

What happens when trust is broken?

What happens when someone betrays you?

What happens when the person who hurt you never apologizes?

The Bible does not ignore the seriousness of these questions.

Instead, it points believers toward the example of God's grace.

Colossians 3:13 says:

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another... even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

We Forgive Because We Have Been Forgiven
Christian forgiveness begins with recognizing God's forgiveness toward us.

Romans 3:23 reminds us that:

“All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

None of us approaches God on the basis of perfect performance.

We depend upon grace.

Ephesians 2:8–9 teaches that salvation is by grace through faith.

When we understand the magnitude of God's mercy toward us, it should influence how we respond to people who offend us.

Forgiveness Does Not Mean the Wrong Was Acceptable
This is important.

Forgiveness does not mean saying:

“What happened was okay.”

It means refusing to make revenge the governing principle of your life.

The Bible takes wrongdoing seriously.

Romans 12:19 says:

“Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

We can pursue justice while refusing personal hatred and revenge.

Forgiveness and accountability can coexist.

Jesus Taught Forgiveness
In Matthew 6:14, Jesus said:

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

Jesus repeatedly emphasized forgiveness.

In Matthew 18, Peter asked how often he should forgive someone who sins against him.

Jesus responded with a principle of abundant forgiveness.

Temptation is a reality every human being encounters.

The presence of temptation does not automatically mean that a person has failed God. The important question is how we respond when temptation comes.

Jesus Himself was tempted in the wilderness. Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that He was “in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”


This means believers should understand temptation rather than simply be surprised by it.

Wisdom helps us recognize temptation before it becomes a destructive decision.

Temptation Often Begins With Desire
James 1:14–15 explains:

“Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.”

Temptation often begins internally.

Something attracts our attention.

A desire becomes stronger.

We begin imagining possibilities.

Then we start rationalizing.

Eventually, if the desire is entertained and acted upon, it can produce sin and destructive consequences.

This is why wisdom requires us to recognize temptation early.

Satan's Temptation of Jesus
Matthew 4 records the temptation of Jesus.

Satan appealed to hunger, identity, power and ambition.

Jesus responded with Scripture.

Again and again, He said:

“It is written.”

This teaches us something important.

God's Word gives us a foundation for resisting deception.

When temptation says, “This is harmless,” Scripture can reveal the truth.

The Bible contains a powerful instruction in Proverbs 4:23:

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

The word “heart” in Scripture often refers to the inner person—the place of thoughts, desires, emotions, intentions and decisions.

Therefore, guarding your heart means paying careful attention to what is shaping you internally.

What you repeatedly watch matters.

What you repeatedly listen to matters.

Who you allow to influence you matters.

What you meditate on matters.

What you entertain matters.

Your Inner Life Influences Your Outer Life
Jesus taught in Luke 6:45:

“For of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”

What is inside eventually finds expression outside.

If the heart is filled with bitterness, bitterness eventually affects relationships.

If the heart is filled with gratitude, gratitude becomes visible.

If the heart is consumed by greed, financial decisions can reveal it.

If the heart is filled with love, compassion becomes evident.

Therefore, Christian wisdom involves more than controlling outward behavior.

It involves protecting the inner life.

Guard What You Think About
Philippians 4:8 gives believers a powerful filter for their thoughts.

Paul encourages believers to think about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, commendable and worthy of praise.

This does not mean ignoring reality.

It means refusing to allow unhealthy thoughts to dominate the mind.

You cannot always prevent a thought from appearing.

But you can decide whether to entertain it.

There is a place where nobody may applaud you.

Nobody may see your tears.

Nobody may know how long you prayed.

Nobody may know what you surrendered.

Nobody may know the battles you fought in silence.

That place is the secret place.

Prayer teaches us that Christianity is not primarily about public appearance.

It is about relationship with God.

Jesus taught this principle in Matthew 6:6:

“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret.”

Prayer Reveals Who God Is
When we pray, we learn that God is not merely an idea.

He is our Father.

Jesus taught His disciples to begin prayer with:

“Our Father which art in heaven.”

Prayer introduces us to God's character.

He is holy.

He is loving.

He is merciful.

He is faithful.

He is sovereign.

He is attentive.

Psalm 34:15 says:

“The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.”

The Secret Place Builds Intimacy
Public worship is valuable.

Corporate prayer is valuable.

Church gatherings are valuable.

But private devotion is also essential.

A person can know how to worship publicly while having little private relationship with God.

The secret place removes the audience.

There is no performance.

No need to impress.

No need to sound spiritual.

You can simply come before God honestly.

Prayer Teaches Dependence
Prayer reminds us that we need God.

Jesus said in John 15:5:

“Without me ye can do nothing.”

This is one of the most important lessons of prayer.

We may have skills.

Education.

Money.

Connections.

Experience.

But ultimately, our lives remain dependent upon God.

Prayer corrects self-sufficiency.

Christian growth is a journey.

Nobody becomes spiritually mature overnight.

When a person first comes to Christ, they begin a new life. They must learn Scripture, develop spiritual disciplines, understand their identity in Christ and grow in character.

Just as a child physically develops over time, Christians are expected to grow spiritually.


Hebrews 5:12–14 describes the difference between spiritual infancy and maturity.

The writer explains that mature believers have their senses trained through practice to distinguish good from evil.

New Birth Is the Beginning
When someone becomes a Christian, it is a beginning—not the end.

Jesus described salvation as being born again in John 3.

Peter writes in 1 Peter 2:2:

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”

The picture is clear.

A newborn needs nourishment.

Likewise, a new believer needs spiritual nourishment through God's Word.

Scripture Produces Growth
2 Timothy 3:16–17 explains that Scripture is useful for teaching, correction, instruction and training in righteousness.

The Bible does more than give information.

It shapes us.

It corrects our thinking.

It exposes wrong motives.

It teaches us God's character.

It helps us understand His expectations.

It equips us for good works.

Therefore, anyone who wants to grow in wisdom must develop a consistent relationship with Scripture.

Prayer Develops Dependence
Prayer is another important part of spiritual maturity.

Young believers may initially pray mainly about their needs.

Knowing God's Word is important.

Studying Scripture is important.

Memorizing Bible verses is important.

Listening to sermons is important.

Reading Christian books can be helpful.

But biblical knowledge reaches its purpose when it produces obedience.

A person can know what God says and still refuse to do it.

James 1:22 gives one of the clearest warnings:

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

God's Word was never intended merely to occupy our minds.

It should shape our lives.

The Difference Between Hearing and Doing
Jesus illustrated this principle in Matthew 7:24–27.

He described a wise man who heard His teachings and did them.


He compared him to a person who built a house upon a rock.

Then Jesus described someone who heard but failed to act.

The difference was not what they heard.

Both heard.

The difference was what they did with what they heard.

This is one of the clearest biblical pictures of wisdom.

Knowledge Without Obedience Creates Self-Deception
James says people can deceive themselves by hearing without doing.

Why?

Because listening to God's Word can create the feeling that we are spiritually progressing.

We may attend church every week.

We may listen to sermons every morning.

We may highlight Bible passages.

We may discuss theology.

But if none of this changes how we live, something is missing.

The purpose of Scripture is transformation.

Abraham Demonstrated Obedience
Abraham's faith was expressed through action.

Hebrews 11:8 says:

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out... obeyed.”

Notice the relationship between faith and obedience.

God spoke.

Abraham acted.

He did not have the entire journey mapped out.

He obeyed what God had revealed.

Sometimes we want God to reveal ten steps before we take the first one.

But faith often begins with obedience to the next clear instruction.

Noah Also Obeyed
Hebrews 11:7 says Noah acted on God's warning and prepared an ark.

His obedience probably looked strange to people around him.

But Noah was not called to follow public opinion.

He was called to follow God.

Obedience sometimes requires doing what is right even when others do not understand.

Saul's Failure
King Saul provides a serious warning.

In 1 Samuel 15, God gave Saul specific instructions.

Saul partially obeyed but kept what he considered valuable.

Understanding God's direction is not only a matter of human intelligence. Christians believe that God has given the Holy Spirit to guide, teach, strengthen and help believers understand spiritual truth.

Jesus spoke about this ministry of the Holy Spirit in John 16:13:

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.”

The Holy Spirit plays an important role in the believer's spiritual journey.

The Holy Spirit Is Our Teacher
Jesus said in John 14:26:

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance.”

This means the Christian life is not meant to be lived through human reasoning alone.

We study Scripture, think carefully, seek counsel and make responsible decisions, but we also depend upon the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit helps us understand and apply God's truth.

Spiritual Understanding Is Different From Information
Someone can possess extensive knowledge about Christianity without having genuine spiritual understanding.

A person may know Bible history.

They may know theological terminology.

They may memorize hundreds of verses.

But spiritual understanding involves allowing God's truth to transform the heart and conduct.

Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 2:12:

“Now we have received... the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.”

The Holy Spirit helps believers recognize spiritual realities that cannot simply be reduced to intellectual information.

The Holy Spirit Leads Us Into Truth
The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of truth.

This means His leading will never contradict God's revealed truth.

If someone claims that the Holy Spirit is leading them toward dishonesty, hatred, sexual immorality, revenge, pride or deliberate disobedience to Scripture, that claim must be examined.

God does not contradict Himself.

The Spirit who inspired Scripture will not lead us into a lifestyle that directly opposes Scripture.

Being Led Requires Sensitivity
Galatians 5:25 says:

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

Walking suggests an ongoing relationship.

Being led by God is not necessarily about receiving dramatic supernatural experiences every day.

Often, the Spirit's work is seen through conviction, wisdom, spiritual growth, obedience and increasing sensitivity to God's Word.

Waiting is one of the hardest lessons of faith.

Most people enjoy receiving answers.

We want prayers answered quickly.

We want opportunities immediately.

We want healing now.

We want financial breakthrough now.

We want the relationship now.

We want the job now.

We want the promise fulfilled now.

But God does not always operate according to our preferred timetable.

Sometimes the answer is wait.

And waiting can become a powerful classroom where God teaches patience, trust, character and dependence.

Waiting Does Not Mean God Has Forgotten You
One of the greatest dangers during seasons of delay is believing that God's silence means God's absence.

But Scripture repeatedly shows people who waited for God's timing.


Abraham waited for the fulfillment of God's promise.

Joseph waited through slavery and prison.

David waited before becoming king.

Israel waited for deliverance.

The disciples waited for the promised Holy Spirit.

Waiting appears repeatedly throughout Scripture.

Psalm 27:14
David wrote:

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”

Notice that waiting requires courage.

Why?

Because waiting can test our faith.

It is easy to trust God when everything happens quickly.

But delayed answers force us to ask:

“Do I trust God even when I cannot see what He is doing?”

Money is a practical part of everyday life.

We need money for food, housing, education, transportation, business, family responsibilities and many other needs.

Because money affects so many areas of life, believers need wisdom in how they earn, spend, save, give and manage it.


The Bible does not teach that money itself is evil.

Instead, Scripture warns about the danger of loving money and teaches believers to become faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to them.

1 Timothy 6:10 says:

“For the love of money is the root of all evil.”

The issue is not money.

The issue is what controls the heart.

Recognize That Everything Belongs to God
Psalm 24:1 says:

“The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof.”

This changes our perspective.

Instead of thinking:

“This is all mine,”

we learn to think:

“God has entrusted this to me.”

Stewardship means managing God's resources responsibly.

Whether you have little or much, faithfulness matters.

Work With Integrity
Proverbs 10:4 says:

“He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”

Scripture recognizes the value of diligence.

Christians should pursue honest work.

Money obtained through fraud, exploitation, corruption or deception cannot be justified simply because it produces financial success.

Proverbs 11:1 says:

“A false balance is abomination to the LORD.”

Integrity must remain more valuable than profit.

Learn to Budget
Wisdom involves planning.

Luke 14:28 asks:

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost?”

The principle is simple: think before committing resources.

A practical budget helps you understand:

What comes in.
What goes out.
What is essential.
What can be reduced.
What should be saved.
What should be given.
What debts need attention.
Budgeting is not a lack of faith.

It can be an expression of responsible stewardship.

Avoid Unnecessary Debt
Proverbs 22:7 says:

“The borrower is servant to the lender.”

Debt can become burdensome when it is accumulated without careful consideration.

Not every form of borrowing is automatically sinful, but believers should approach debt with wisdom.

Before borrowing, consider:

Can I realistically repay this?

What will the total cost be?

Is the debt necessary?

What happens if my income changes?

Will this decision limit my ability to meet important responsibilities?

Wisdom thinks beyond today's excitement.

One of the most difficult words for many people to say is “No.”

We want people to like us.

We do not want to disappoint others.

We fear rejection.

We fear missing opportunities.

Sometimes we simply want to fit in.

But biblical wisdom teaches that there are moments when saying no is necessary for protecting our faith, character, peace and purpose.

A Christian who cannot say no may eventually find themselves saying yes to things that compromise their values.

Jesus Set Boundaries
Jesus loved people deeply, but He did not allow people to control His mission.

He sometimes withdrew from crowds to pray.

He refused to be manipulated by religious leaders.

He did not respond to every demand.

He understood His assignment.

This teaches us that love does not require unlimited availability.

Joseph Said No to Temptation
Genesis 39 provides one of the clearest examples.

Joseph was tempted by Potiphar's wife.

He could have chosen secrecy.

He could have rationalized his actions.

Instead, he refused.

Genesis 39:9 records Joseph's response:

“How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

Joseph understood that the temptation was not simply about another person.

It was about his relationship with God.

Sometimes saying no requires remembering who we belong to.

Saying No Can Protect Your Future
One bad decision can have consequences far beyond the moment.

A person may say yes to dishonest money and later face legal or financial problems.

Wisdom and humility belong together.

A person may possess knowledge, experience and intelligence, but if pride prevents them from receiving correction, their understanding can become distorted.

The Bible repeatedly warns about the danger of pride.

Proverbs 16:18 says:

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

Pride can make people believe they are wiser than they really are.

It can prevent them from listening.

It can make correction feel like an attack.

It can cause people to repeat mistakes simply because they do not want to admit they were wrong.

Pride Says, “I Know Better”
One of the clearest signs of pride is an unwillingness to learn.

A proud person may reject advice simply because it came from someone they consider less experienced.


They may refuse correction from parents, pastors, mentors, colleagues or friends.

They may believe that admitting a mistake makes them weak.

But Scripture teaches the opposite.

Proverbs 12:1 says:

“Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”

Correction is not necessarily rejection.

Sometimes correction is protection.

Humility Creates Room for Growth
A humble person recognizes that they do not know everything.

This does not mean they lack confidence.

It means they recognize their dependence on God and their need for others.

Proverbs 11:2 says:

“When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.”

Notice the connection.

Humility creates an environment where wisdom can grow.

When we accept that we may be wrong, we become willing to learn.

Moses Demonstrated Humility
Numbers 12:3 describes Moses as very meek.

Yet Moses was one of the most significant leaders in Israel's history.

His humility did not prevent leadership.

It shaped his leadership.

He understood that his authority came from God.

This is an important lesson for anyone in leadership.

Humility does not mean weakness.

It means recognizing that leadership is stewardship rather than personal ownership.

Nebuchadnezzar's Warning
King Nebuchadnezzar provides a powerful biblical example of pride.

He became extremely powerful and successful.

Daniel 4 records how he looked upon Babylon and spoke proudly about what he had accomplished.

But God humbled him.

Eventually, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God's sovereignty.

Daniel 4:37 records his words:

“And those that walk in pride he is able to abase.”

His story reminds us that success can become dangerous when it makes us forget God.

Pride Can Affect Spiritual Knowledge
Pride is especially dangerous in spiritual matters.

A person may know many Bible verses and understand theology deeply.


But spiritual knowledge without humility can produce arrogance.

Paul warned in 1 Corinthians 8:1:

“Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.”

The goal of Bible study is not to become superior to others.

The goal is to know God and become more like Christ.

Jesus Demonstrated Perfect Humility
Jesus had every reason to demand honor, yet He chose humility.

Philippians 2:6–8 describes Christ's willingness to humble Himself and become obedient even unto death.

This is the ultimate example.

If Jesus demonstrated humility, His followers cannot make pride their lifestyle.

Not every form of wisdom comes from God.

Human beings can be intelligent, educated, experienced, strategic and highly successful while still making decisions that are contrary to God's ways.

This is why the Bible makes a distinction between earthly wisdom and godly wisdom.

James 3:13 asks:

“Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you?”

The passage then explains that genuine wisdom is demonstrated through conduct, humility and good works.


James 3:17 gives us a powerful description of wisdom that comes from above:

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.”

This provides a biblical standard for identifying true wisdom.

Earthly Wisdom Can Look Impressive
Earthly wisdom is not necessarily stupid or unintelligent.

In fact, it can look extremely impressive.

A person may be highly strategic, persuasive, ambitious and successful.

They may know how to manipulate situations to their advantage.

They may understand how to accumulate wealth, influence people and gain recognition.

But worldly success does not automatically equal godly wisdom.

James 3:14–15 warns:

“This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.”

The issue is the source and character of the wisdom.

The Characteristics of Earthly Wisdom
James connects earthly wisdom with bitter envy and selfish ambition.

This is important.

A person may appear intelligent but be driven by jealousy.

They may succeed because they are willing to step on others.

There are moments when life simply does not make sense.

You can do everything you know to do and still encounter disappointment.

You can pray sincerely and still face difficulty.

You can work hard and still experience failure.

You can love people and still be betrayed.

You can trust God and still walk through seasons of uncertainty.

During such moments, wisdom becomes especially important.

The question is not only, “Why is this happening?”

Sometimes the more important question is:

“How should I respond while I am going through it?”

Trouble Is Part of Life
Jesus never promised His followers a life without trouble.

In John 16:33, He said:

“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Christian faith does not mean pretending that suffering does not exist.


It means learning how to face suffering without losing hope.

Ask God for Wisdom
James 1:2–5 provides a remarkable perspective on trials.

James says believers should consider it joy when they experience various trials because the testing of faith produces patience.

Then he says:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.”

Notice the connection.

Trials require wisdom.

When life becomes difficult, we may not know what to do.

Should we wait?

Should we act?

Should we confront the issue?

Should we leave?

Should we seek help?

Should we change direction?

God can give wisdom for navigating difficult circumstances.

Do Not Make Permanent Decisions From Temporary Emotions
Trouble can affect our emotions.

When we are angry, disappointed, afraid, or exhausted, we may want to make immediate decisions.

But emotional intensity can cloud judgment.

Proverbs 14:29 says:

“He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding.”

Sometimes wisdom means waiting until emotions settle before making major decisions.

Pray.

Rest.

Seek counsel.

Think carefully.

Then act.

Remember God's Character
When circumstances become confusing, return to what you know about God.

Psalm 46:1 says:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

God's presence is not limited to peaceful seasons.

He is present in trouble.

He is present in uncertainty.

He is present in grief.

He is present when we do not understand.

The circumstances may change, but God's character remains dependable.

Joseph's Story
Joseph's life demonstrates how painful circumstances can exist alongside God's purpose.

He was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned.

Relationships are one of God's greatest gifts, but they can also become one of life's greatest sources of pain.

Friendships can experience betrayal.

Families can experience disagreements.

Marriages can face misunderstandings.

Church members can offend one another.

Work relationships can become complicated.

Because human beings are imperfect, relationships require wisdom.

Biblical wisdom teaches us how to love people without losing discernment, how to forgive without ignoring boundaries, how to communicate without causing unnecessary wounds, and how to build relationships that honor God.

Love Is the Foundation
Jesus made love central to Christian living.

Matthew 22:37–39 teaches believers to love God and love their neighbors.

This means relationships cannot be separated from our faith.

How we treat people matters to God.

1 Corinthians 13 provides one of Scripture's clearest descriptions of love.

Love is patient.

Love is kind.

Love does not envy.

Love does not behave arrogantly.

Love does not seek its own.

Love is not easily provoked.

These principles provide a practical framework for relationships.

Learn to Listen
Many relationship problems begin because people listen to respond rather than listen to understand.

James 1:19 says:

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”

Listening is an expression of love.

When someone is talking, put aside the desire to immediately defend yourself.

Ask questions.

Seek clarification.

Try to understand their perspective.

Listening does not mean agreeing with everything they say.

It means respecting their humanity enough to hear them.

Forgiveness Is Essential
Because people are imperfect, relationships require forgiveness.

Colossians 3:13 says:

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another... even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

Forgiveness does not mean pretending that the offense never happened.

It does not mean refusing accountability.

It does not always mean immediately restoring the same level of trust.

Instead, forgiveness involves releasing vengeance and choosing not to allow bitterness to control your heart.

Words are powerful.

A sentence can encourage someone who is discouraged. Another sentence can destroy someone's confidence.

Words can restore relationships, but they can also create wounds that remain for years.


Words can communicate truth, but they can also spread lies.

Words can bring peace, but they can also create conflict.

This is why Scripture repeatedly teaches believers to develop wisdom in how they speak.

Proverbs 18:21 says:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

This does not mean our words possess magical power to create anything we desire. Rather, it emphasizes the tremendous influence speech can have on people and situations.

Think Before You Speak
One of the simplest expressions of wisdom is learning to pause.

James 1:19 says:

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”

Notice the order.

Be quick to listen.

Be slow to speak.

Be slow to become angry.

Many conflicts happen because people respond before understanding what was actually said.

A wise person does not feel compelled to answer immediately.

Sometimes silence creates space for wisdom.

A Soft Answer Can Change a Situation
Proverbs 15:1 says:

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

Imagine two people in an argument.

One responds with aggression.

The other responds calmly.

The second person's response may not solve everything instantly, but it can prevent the situation from becoming worse.

This does not mean Christians should avoid difficult conversations.


It means truth should be communicated with self-control.

Truth Without Love Can Wound
Ephesians 4:15 instructs believers to speak:

“the truth in love.”

Both parts matter.

Truth without love can become cruelty.

Love without truth can become compromise.

Godly communication combines honesty and compassion.

If someone needs correction, we should not humiliate them.

If someone has made a mistake, we can address the mistake without attacking their dignity.

Gossip Is Not Harmless
Proverbs 16:28 says:

“A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.”

Gossip can destroy relationships.

Sometimes information is shared under the disguise of concern:

“I am only telling you so you can pray.”

But if the information is unnecessary and we have no responsibility to share it, we should ask whether we are truly helping.

Before sharing information about another person, consider:

Is it true?

Is it necessary?

Is it mine to share?

Will sharing it help?

Would I say it if the person were present?

Wisdom knows when to remain silent.

Social Media Requires Verbal Wisdom Too
In today's world, words are no longer limited to spoken conversations.

Posts, comments, captions, messages, voice notes, and online discussions are also forms of communication.

One of the questions many Christians ask is:

“What is God's will for my life?”

People ask this when considering relationships, careers, ministry, education, business, relocation, finances, and major life decisions.

Sometimes we wish God would simply write the answer across the sky.

But Scripture reveals that understanding God's will involves developing a relationship with Him, knowing His Word, renewing our minds, praying, exercising wisdom, and learning to walk in obedience.

Romans 12:2 says:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

God's Will Is Not Always a Mystery
Many believers become anxious because they think God's will is always hidden.

But Scripture clearly reveals many aspects of God's will.

For example, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says:

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

1 Thessalonians 4:3 says:

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification.”

God's will includes thanksgiving, holiness, love, obedience, faith, and our growing relationship with Him.

Before asking God which specific job we should accept, we should first ask whether we are walking according to the general principles He has already revealed.

Scripture Is a Guide
Psalm 119:105 says:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

The Bible provides moral and spiritual direction.

It teaches us how to treat people.

It teaches us how to respond to temptation.

It teaches us how to handle money.

It teaches us how to speak.

It teaches us how to forgive.

It teaches us how to serve.

It teaches us how to live with integrity.

Therefore, if we want to understand God's will, we must become people who know His Word.

God's Will Will Not Contradict His Word
This is an important principle.

If someone says, “God told me to do something,” but that action clearly contradicts Scripture, the claim should be rejected.

God does not contradict Himself.

For example, someone cannot justify dishonesty by saying God told them to lie.

They cannot justify hatred by claiming divine approval.

Knowledge is valuable.

Education is valuable. Experience is valuable. Information is valuable. Studying the Bible is valuable. Learning from history and listening to experienced people can help us avoid mistakes.

But the Bible makes an important distinction between knowing something and knowing what to do with what we know.

A person can have enormous knowledge and still make foolish decisions.

Someone can quote Scripture and still refuse to obey it.

Someone can understand financial principles and still manage money irresponsibly.

Someone can know how relationships work and still treat people badly.

This is why believers need more than knowledge. We need wisdom.

Proverbs 4:7 says:

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Knowledge Gives Information; Wisdom Gives Direction
Knowledge answers questions such as:

“What is this?”

“How does this work?”

“What does the Bible say?”

“What happened?”

Wisdom asks:

“What should I do with what I know?”

For example, a person may know that anger can destroy relationships. But knowledge alone does not guarantee self-control.

Someone may know that gossip is harmful. Yet they may continue spreading information about others.

No matter how intelligent, experienced, gifted, or spiritually mature a person may be, there are moments when they need the perspective of others.

The Bible does not present believers as people who must navigate life completely alone. Instead, Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the importance of wise counsel, godly relationships, correction, instruction, and community.

Proverbs 11:14 says:

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

Wise counsel can protect us from decisions we might otherwise regret.

Everyone Has Blind Spots
One reason counsel is important is that human beings have blind spots.

We may be too emotionally involved in a situation to see clearly.

We may want something so badly that we ignore warning signs.

We may be afraid to admit that our plan is failing.

We may interpret circumstances according to our desires.

Another person with wisdom and objectivity may see what we cannot.

Proverbs 12:15 says:

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”

The willingness to listen is itself an expression of wisdom.

Wise Counsel Is Not the Same as Popular Opinion
However, not every opinion is wise counsel.

Just because many people agree does not mean the decision is correct.

The Bible encourages believers to seek godly counsel.

We live in a world filled with information.

Every day, people encounter thousands of opinions through social media, television, podcasts, advertisements, conversations, books, videos, and online platforms. Some information is helpful. Some is misleading. Some is completely false.

For believers, the challenge is not simply finding information. It is learning how to discern what is true, what is beneficial, what is harmful, and what agrees with God's Word.

Discernment is the ability to distinguish between things that may appear similar but are fundamentally different.

Hebrews 5:14 speaks about mature believers who have their senses “exercised to discern both good and evil.”

Discernment Is Part of Spiritual Maturity
A spiritually mature Christian should not believe everything simply because it sounds religious.

Paul warned the church in Ephesians 4:14 against remaining spiritually immature and being “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.”

This is particularly relevant in an age when religious messages can spread rapidly online.

A statement can go viral without being biblical.

A preacher can be popular without every statement being correct.

A video can have millions of views and still contain theological error.

Discernment helps believers examine what they hear.

Test What You Hear
1 John 4:1 gives an important instruction:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”

This does not mean Christians should become suspicious of everyone.

King Solomon is one of the most fascinating figures in Scripture. He was known for extraordinary wisdom, wealth, influence, and accomplishments. Yet his life also contains serious warnings about the dangers of allowing wisdom and success to become separated from obedience to God.

Solomon's story therefore gives believers both inspiration and instruction.

His life reminds us that receiving wisdom from God is a great blessing, but wisdom must be continually accompanied by obedience, humility, and faithfulness.

Solomon Asked for Wisdom
When Solomon became king, he faced an enormous responsibility.

In 1 Kings 3:7–9, Solomon acknowledged that he was young and inexperienced and asked God for an understanding heart to judge God's people.

This is one of the most important lessons from his life.

Solomon recognized his limitations.

He did not pretend to know everything.

He asked God for help.

God responded generously.

1 Kings 3:12 says:

“Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart.”

Solomon's wisdom became widely recognized.

Wisdom Should Be Used to Serve Others
Solomon's request was not primarily about personal comfort.

He wanted wisdom to lead God's people.

This teaches us that wisdom should not be treated as a personal trophy.

God gives wisdom so that we can make righteous decisions, serve others, solve problems, provide direction, and contribute positively to the lives of those around us.

There are seasons in life when nothing seems to make sense.

You pray, but the answer does not come. You work hard, but progress appears slow. You trust God, yet circumstances become more complicated. You ask questions, but instead of receiving immediate explanations, you find yourself waiting.

One of the most difficult aspects of faith is trusting God when we do not understand what He is doing.

Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”

God's perspective is greater than ours.

We Do Not Always See the Whole Picture
Human beings naturally want explanations.

When something happens, we ask, “Why?”

Why did this opportunity disappear?

Why did this relationship end?

Why has the answer to prayer been delayed?

Why is the situation getting worse?

Sometimes God gives us answers. Other times, He gives us grace to continue without knowing everything.

Job experienced this reality.

Job suffered tremendous losses and asked difficult questions. His friends tried to explain his suffering through simplistic assumptions, but the book ultimately reveals that Job's understanding was limited.

At the end, Job encountered God in a deeper way.

Job 42:5 says:

“I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.”

Job did not receive every detail of the explanation he wanted. Instead, he gained a deeper awareness of God.

Faith Does Not Require Complete Understanding
Faith means trusting God even when we cannot see the entire picture.

Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as:

“The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

If we understood everything before trusting God, there would be little room for faith.

Abraham is a powerful example.

Hebrews 11:8 says that Abraham obeyed when he was called to go to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, “and he went out, not knowing whither he went.”

Abraham moved forward without having every detail.

Sometimes God gives us enough light for the next step rather than the entire journey.

Every day, people make decisions. Some decisions are small, while others can significantly affect the direction of our lives. Choosing a career, entering a relationship, accepting a job, starting a business, relocating, choosing friends, responding to an opportunity, or making a ministry decision can sometimes leave us asking, “Lord, what should I do?”

The Bible teaches that God cares about the direction of His children and provides wisdom for those who seek Him.

Proverbs 3:5–6 gives one of the clearest principles for making decisions:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

This passage reminds us that wise decision-making begins with dependence upon God.

Do Not Depend Only on Your Own Understanding
Human understanding is valuable, but it is limited.

We see only part of a situation. God sees the beginning, the middle, and the end.

Something may appear attractive today but produce problems tomorrow. Another opportunity may initially appear difficult but eventually become part of God's purpose.

This is why Proverbs warns believers not to lean entirely on their own understanding.

It does not mean Christians should stop thinking or planning. Instead, it means that human reasoning should remain submitted to God's wisdom.

James 1:5 says:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.”

When we do not know what to do, we can ask God.

Begin With Prayer
One of the simplest ways to bring God into our decisions is through prayer.

Philippians 4:6 teaches:

“In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Prayer allows us to place our plans before God instead of assuming that our desires automatically represent His will.

The Bible is more than a collection of ancient writings. For Christians, it is God's revealed Word and a foundational source of truth, wisdom, correction, instruction, and guidance. Yet owning a Bible is not the same as understanding it, and reading Scripture is not the same as allowing Scripture to shape our lives.

To walk in truth, believers must learn to understand God's Word and apply it faithfully.

Psalm 119:105 declares, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

This beautiful picture shows the role Scripture plays in the believer's journey. A lamp does not necessarily reveal the entire road at once. It provides enough light to take the next step.

God's Word Reveals Truth
Jesus prayed to the Father in John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

In a world filled with competing opinions, philosophies, ideologies, and voices, Christians need a reliable foundation.

Truth is not determined simply by popularity.

Something does not become true because many people believe it, nor does something become false because it is unpopular.

The believer therefore needs Scripture as a standard for evaluating ideas and decisions.

Understanding Requires Attention
Jesus repeatedly called people to hear and understand.

In Matthew 13:23, while explaining the parable of the sower, He described the good-ground hearer as one who “heareth the word, and understandeth it.”

This demonstrates that understanding matters.

We should not read Scripture merely to complete a daily reading plan. We should ask questions:

What does this passage say?

What did it mean in its original context?

What does it reveal about God?

What does it reveal about humanity?

What principle should I apply?

How does this passage point me toward Christ?

Such questions encourage deeper engagement with God's Word.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Understand
The Christian does not study Scripture entirely through human ability.

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would guide His followers into truth. John 16:13 says, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.”

This does not mean every personal interpretation is automatically correct because someone prayed before reading the Bible. Rather, believers should depend upon the Holy Spirit while also studying Scripture responsibly and carefully.

Prayer and study belong together.

Before reading, we can pray, “Lord, help me understand Your Word and show me how to live it.”

Knowledge is powerful. What a person knows can influence how they think, what they believe, how they behave, and the decisions they make. For Christians, biblical knowledge is especially important because our understanding of God shapes the way we live for Him.

Hosea 4:6 gives a sobering statement: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

This does not mean that every difficulty believers experience is caused by ignorance. However, the verse demonstrates the serious consequences that can occur when God's people lack knowledge of His truth.

Christian faith is not designed to remain shallow. God calls believers to grow.

Knowledge Helps Us Know God
The purpose of biblical knowledge is not simply to collect information. It is ultimately to know God.

Jesus prayed in John 17:3, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

There is a difference between knowing facts about someone and knowing that person relationally.

A person can memorize Bible verses and still have little understanding of God's character. Therefore, Scripture should lead us beyond information toward relationship.

As we study God's Word, we learn about His holiness, mercy, justice, love, faithfulness, wisdom, patience, and grace.

Knowledge Strengthens Faith
Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Faith is strengthened when believers understand what God has said.

When we know God's promises, we have a foundation upon which to stand during difficult seasons.

When fear says, “God has abandoned you,” Scripture reminds us of Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

When anxiety says, “You cannot survive this,” Scripture points us toward Philippians 4:6–7 and God's peace.

When guilt says, “There is no hope for you,” Scripture reminds believers of Romans 8:1 that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Knowledge gives faith something to stand upon.

Knowledge Protects Against Deception
Jesus warned about deception in Matthew 24:4: “Take heed that no man deceive you.”

One reason believers can become vulnerable to false teaching is a lack of biblical understanding.

Ephesians 4:14 describes immature believers as being “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.”

Not every form of wisdom is godly wisdom.

Human beings have developed remarkable knowledge, technology, philosophies, strategies, and systems. People can become highly intelligent and still make choices that contradict God's principles. Scripture therefore teaches believers to distinguish between earthly wisdom and wisdom that comes from above.

James 3:17 provides one of the clearest descriptions of godly wisdom:

This verse gives us a practical test. Godly wisdom is not merely about having the correct answer. It is also reflected in the character and fruit produced by that answer.

Wisdom From Above Begins With Purity
James says heavenly wisdom is “first pure.”

Purity speaks to motives, intentions, and actions. A person may present an intelligent argument, but if the motivation behind it is manipulation, jealousy, selfish ambition, or greed, that wisdom does not reflect God's character.

Godly wisdom does not require sinful methods to accomplish supposedly righteous goals.

Jesus taught that a tree is known by its fruit (Matthew 7:16–20). Likewise, wisdom can be examined by what it produces.

Does it produce honesty or deception?

Does it produce peace or unnecessary conflict?

Does it produce humility or pride?

Does it lead people toward righteousness or compromise?

These questions matter.

Godly Wisdom Produces Peace
James describes heavenly wisdom as peaceable.

This does not mean godly wisdom avoids every difficult conversation. Jesus sometimes confronted hypocrisy directly. Paul corrected serious problems within the early church. Biblical wisdom is not cowardice.

Instead, peaceable wisdom seeks reconciliation and restoration rather than conflict for its own sake.

Proverbs 15:1 says, “A soft answer turneth away wrath.”

A wise person understands that the way something is communicated can be just as important as what is being communicated.

There are moments in life when intelligence and experience are simply not enough. We face decisions about relationships, careers, family, ministry, finances, education, relocation, business, and personal responsibilities. Sometimes there are several options, yet we do not know which direction is right.

In such moments, the Bible gives believers a powerful invitation: ask God for wisdom.

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

This verse presents wisdom not merely as something humans must acquire through experience but as something we can receive from God.

Solomon Asked for Wisdom
One of the clearest biblical examples is Solomon.

When Solomon became king, he recognized the enormous responsibility placed upon him. Instead of asking God primarily for wealth, long life, or victory over his enemies, Solomon asked for understanding.

In 1 Kings 3:9, he prayed, “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad.”

Solomon understood something important: leadership without wisdom could become dangerous.

God was pleased with his request. According to 1 Kings 3:12, God gave Solomon “an understanding heart” greater than what had been possessed by those before him.

Wisdom is one of the most valuable treasures a person can possess. A person may have education, wealth, influence, experience, and intelligence, yet still make decisions that lead to destruction. The Bible presents a deeper foundation for wisdom—the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 9:10 declares, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

When Scripture speaks about fearing God, it is not primarily referring to being terrified of Him as though He were an unpredictable enemy. The biblical fear of the Lord speaks of reverence, honour, humility, awe, obedience, and recognition of God's authority. It is understanding who God is and responding to Him appropriately.

Wisdom Begins With Recognizing God
The world often defines wisdom as intelligence, academic achievement, experience, or the ability to solve complicated problems. While these things can be valuable, biblical wisdom begins somewhere deeper: recognizing God as the Creator and submitting to His authority.

Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
