The Lagos State government will henceforth stop issuing approval for the construction of building above three floors in Ebute-Metta East and West, in a bid to prevent building collapse in the area.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development in the state, Dr Idris Salako who made the announcement on Wednesday May 11, said the move followed an audit of buildings in the area.

Salako said the low-lying nature of Ebute-Metta and its negative impact on some of the buildings, most of which showed serious defects, made it mandatory for the government to apply special measures to save lives and property.

The commissioner who revealed that the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has been told to stop taking applications for approval above three floors in the area, called for the understanding of stakeholders in the state, saying the decision was taken in the best interest of the people.

He said;

“The soil and topography, the low water level and effects, as well as the inability of structures in this area to bear loads above three floors were considered in arriving at this decision.

“To guarantee the safety of lives and property by ensuring that we put a halt to lives being cut short by incidents of building collapse, the government has been compelled to invoke the relevant sections of the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law 2019, as amended, to address the crisis.”

Ghanaian movie star, Yvonne Nelson has opened up on finding love with a man from her country.

Speaking in an interview with Kingdom + FM in Accra, Nelson disclosed that she has been unlucky in romantic relationships with Ghanaian men.

She added that she had several men she genuinely liked, but they didn’t think she liked them, hence their relationship failed.

Nelson said;

The Senate, today, May 10, amended the Electoral Act 2022, to allow "statutory delegates" to participate and vote in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties.

Those identified as "statutory delegates" include the President, Vice President, Members of the National Assembly, Governors and their deputies, Members of the State Houses of Assembly, Chairmen of Councils, Councillors, and National Working Committee of political parties, amongst others.

The bill to amend the 2022 Electoral Act No. 13 was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.

Omo-Agege said the bill seeks to amend the provision of section 84( of the Electoral Act.

According to him, the provisions of the section "does not provide for the participation of what is generally known as ‘statutory delegates’ in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties."

"The extant section only clearly provides for the participation of elected delegates in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties held to nominate candidates of political parties.

"This is an unintended error, and we can only correct it with this amendment now before us," the Deputy Senate President said.

Speaking after the bill to amend the 2022 Electoral Act was passed, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said that the amendment became imperative in view of the deficiency created by the provision of Section 84( of the extant Act.

He said: "The amended Electoral Act of 2022 that we passed this year, has a deficiency that was never intended and that deficiency will deny all statutory delegates in all political parties from participation in congresses and conventions.

"And, therefore, such a major and unintended clause has to be amended before the party primaries start in the next eight days. This is emergency legislation, so to speak.

"Our expectation is that the National Assembly – the two chambers – would finish with the processing of the amendment of this bill between today (in the Senate) and tomorrow (in the House of Representatives), and then the Executive will do the assent.

"That is so important to enable every statutory delegate to participate in the party primaries right from the beginning that will start on the 18th of May, 2022.

"So, this is an emergency effort to ensure that nobody is denied his or her rightful opportunity as a delegate, especially the statutory delegates, and these are those who are elected.

"These are the President, Vice President, Members of the National Assembly, Governors, Members of the State Houses of Assembly, Chairmen of Council and their Councillors, National Working Committee Members of all the political parties and so on.

"This is a fundamental effort to ensure that we address this within the week, so that by next week, the Electoral Act, 2022 (amended version), will be very salutary for us to start our party primaries."

A burn survivor is lucky to have her skin back to normal just 6 months after she was burnt.

The Twitter user took to the platform to share side-by-side photos of herself on November 2, 2021 and on May, 2, 2021, six months apart.
She had severe burns on her face, neck and shoulders in November 2021. Fortunately, she has now healed completely and the burns left no blemish.

Buhari has returned to Twitter 11 months after he stopped tweeting following the ban on the microblogging platform.
The Buhari administration banned Twitter after the platform deleted tweets by the president, threatening to treat members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the “language they understand”.

The ban was announced on June 4, 2021 and was lifted on January, 13, 2022, after 7 months.
Following the ban, the President stopped addressing citizens via Twitter.

Even when the ban was lifted and many politicians and their aides returned to the platform, Buhari didn’t return until today, May 2.
In his first tweet in 11 months, Buhari sent his best wishes to Muslims celebrating Eid-el-Fitr while addressing the problem of insecurity in the country.

Photos of the three-storey building that collapsed in Ebute Metta area of Lagos state have been shared online.

The photos as seen on Google Photos shows the building standing at 31, Ibadan Street, Ebute Metta, before it collapsed on Sunday night, May 1, leaving many trapped.

The death toll has risen to eight as at the time of filing this report, while 23 persons have been rescued from the rubbles.
According to reports, the building was dilapidated and distressed before it eventually gave way.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director General of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said the building had been sealed for demolition due to it’s dilapidated state but the occupants refused to move.

Super Eagles of Nigeria stars will receive $10,000 each for the victories over Egypt and Sudan at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

This comes after the Nigeria Football Federation and the Eagles reached an agreement over the mode of payment for wins and draw at the tournament.

According to PUNCH, the meeting between the players and the NFF officials was held before the start of the tournament in Garuoa.

The Eagles are expected to receive the sum of $5000 for a win and $2,500 for a draw following the meeting.

“There is an agreement that the players will receive $5000 for a win and half of that for a draw, while they won’t get a dime for losing,” an Eagles official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

The players and officials of the team would be paid their bonuses in full after they qualified from the group stage of the competition,

The three-time African champions will also receive outstanding bonuses for two previous matches , a team official told PUNCH Sports Extra in Garoua.

“We don’t discuss how we pay players their bonuses in the media,” our source added.

“Has any player complained? We are focused on our mission here and won’t want to be distracted by these issues.

“There is an agreement with the players’ representatives, coaches and the NFF officials on how everybody will be paid and we will keep up to our promises when the time comes. All we want is the boys to be focused and in doing that we have promised to keep to the agreement.”

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has told the National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu that only the best is needed to govern Nigeria going forward.

Makinde said this while receiving Tinubu who paid him a condolence visit on Saturday January 15, over the death of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi; the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji and former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Speaking at the state house, the APC national leader said;

“I want to thank you, the governor. It was only last night that I thought of my coming here and we are here today. Having lost a former governor of this state, the Olubadan of Ibadanland and Soun of Ogbomoso, it is just for us to go back to the sense of value of people and their lives.

“With this situation, we share in your loss. You, as the governor in the saddle of power, take responsibility for the situation here. I want to say that we thank God Ibadan has been peaceful and not a den of violence but peaceful.

“Every other thing that has happened has taught us in the book of religion that we are just passing through and we will leave one day. But no matter how long, it is difficult to absorb the loss easily.

“Thank you for being accommodating. We gave you a short notice and you responded.

“That is a demonstration of good character, which is rare. People get, sometimes, intoxicated with power and the arrogance of office can be overwhelming, but not with you. Thank you for receiving us so quickly.”

On his own part, Makinde stated that Tinubu might have to question himself on why he needs to come to the government house as people might read different meaning to it, given that this is a political season.

Addressing Tinubu’s interest in contesting in the 2023 presidential election, the Oyo state Governor wished him well but added that Nigerians “want the best for this country and only the best is good enough at this particular time.”

Makinde said;



“I want to welcome you to Oyo State. We are really grateful for this visit. This is the year political parties will elect their candidates towards the election that is coming next year. So, what this has demonstrated to us is, you stood for politics without bitterness.

“During this political season, you may have to question yourself on why you need to come to the Government House because people might have another interpretation to it. But you sent a message across to me and I was delighted to host you in Ibadan.

“We lost two traditional rulers almost in quick succession.

“First, it was Soun of Ogbomosoland, and we were planning for the burial when the Olubadan of Ibadanland also joined his ancestors. We were still in the middle of that when former Governor Alao-Akala also died. I can see that in Oyo State, we try to take politics out of what we call ‘Omoluabi’.

“We may fight, struggle for political positions but we know power can only come from God and He gives it to whomever He will like to give it to at whatever time.

“We really thank you for this visit and want to let you know that we have taken proper notice that you have risen above politics and all that is going around here to visit us at this moment that we are grieving. We say thank you.

“Let me also use this opportunity to wish you well in your political quest to govern this nation. We want the best for this country and only the best is good enough at this particular time.”
