BREAKING: Tribunal Directs INEC to Provide Materials Related to Kogi Gubernatorial Poll Within 48 Hours

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Kogi has given INEC 48 hours to issue certified copies of electoral materials on the Nov. 11 off-cycle election in the state to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

It also ordered INEC to allow SDP’s forensic experts to examine some electoral materials.

The materials include the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and result sheets for Adavi, Okene, Okehi, Ogori-Magongo, Ajaokuta, Lokoja, Kogi and Bassa Local Government Areas.

The tribunal ruled on Saturday in Lokoja that the SDP requested the materials to prove its case in the petition it filed against the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the election.

Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu gave the order following two ex-parte motions filed on November 19 by the SDP and by its governorship candidate, Alhaji Muritala Yakubu-Ajaka.

Justice Birnin-Kudu said the orders became imperative in view of the time constraints the tribunal had to discharge its mandate.

“The order is in compliance with Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended) and with the Electoral Act (2022).

“INEC is hereby ordered to produce all the documents being sought by the plaintiffs within 48 hours to enable proceedings to go smoothly and without hitches,’’ he declared.

SDP and Yakubu-Ajaka earlier filed seven ex-parte motions to support their demand but withdrew five and pursued two.

Lead counsel to the petitioners, John Adele (SAN), had earlier told the court that efforts made to obtain certified copies of materials used in the six local government areas from INEC had been fruitless.

“Time is of the essence in this matter, and that is why we filed the motions to your lordship to help salvage the situation.

“Each time we approached INEC since Nov. 13, its officials failed to avail us with even one of the electoral materials for which we requested.

“We believe that if your lordship grants our application, INEC will do the needful to enable us to prosecute this case within the time limit,’’ he prayed the tribunal.

Edison had announced his emergence as Speaker on October 30, 2023, following an explosion in the Assembly complex the previous day, believed to have been orchestrated to stop the move by Amaewhule and 23 other lawmakers to impeach Governor Siminialayi Fubara.

Crisis In Kano As APC, NNPP Stakeholders Fixed Saturday For Mega Protest

There is tension in Kano as stakeholders of the APC and those of the NNPP have fixed street demonstration for Saturday.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, the Director-General of the Gawuna/Garo Campaign Organisation, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, who led other stakeholders consisting of members of the Kano State House of Assembly, former commissioners, ex-special advisers and other stalwarts of the APC in the state, he said while the NNPP would be staging a mass protest in Kano on Saturday, the APC would organise a mass rally same day.

Bichi said the information available to them showed that NNPP stakeholders fixed a mass protest for Saturday after meeting with their leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He however, insisted that APC stakeholders would also hold a mass rally same day in Kano, in support of the party’s candidate.

When asked to explain why the APC would hold a mass rally on Saturday when it was already established that the NNPP would be staging a mass protest in Kano, Bichi said, “We are also going for a mass rally on Saturday as part of democracy.”

Answering a question on likely outbreak of violence, he said, “We are law-abiding citizens and will not do anything to disturb peace, but we will not hesitate to protect our lives and belongings.

Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) Reacts As Aircraft Conveying Tinubu’s Minister Crash-Lands In Ibadan

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has reacted to the incident involving the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and some of his aides, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital..


The NSIB, which is under the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, is charged with the responsibility to investigate any civil aircraft accident and serious incident arising out of or in the course of air navigation and occurring either in or over Nigeria.

News earlier reported that an aircraft conveying the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and some of his aides, crash-landed near the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The HS 125 aircraft, which is a private jet operated by Flint Aero, was reported to have crash-landed on Friday night.

It was gathered that the aircraft departed Abuja Airport for Ibadan at about 6:41 pm and crash-landed into the bush during an effort to land at about 7:21 pm close to the airport runway in Ibadan.

A source told Leadership that the pilot of the aircraft was cleared for landing before the incident, adding that all persons on board and crew members were, however, safely evacuated. The source added that the aircraft was substantially damaged.

Again, 35 People Killed, At least 50 Sustains Injure in Egypt Fatal Accident

At least 35 people were killed and more than 50 others injured Saturday in a “horrific collision” on an Egyptian highway involving a bus and several cars, state media reported.


Traffic accidents are common in Egypt where roads are often in bad repair and the highway code is frequently disregarded.

“A horrific collision on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natrun led to the death of 35 people, at least 18 of whom burnt to death,” said the Al-Ahram news website, indicating “at least 53 were injured”.

Images posted on social media showed an overturned lorry lying across the fast lane on a charred tarmac.

Further on is at least one bus and a minibus, both largely gutted by fire, as well as many cars, some still in flames.

Crowds of people can be seen standing by the road, gazing at the crash site alongside queues of cars as thick black smoke spirals into the air.

Official figures say 7,000 people were killed in road accidents in 2021 in the Arab world’s most populous country.
