Reuters report that Atiku's ban from the US was lifted for two weeks to encourage democracy in Nigeria. The report says lobbyist for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar convinced the US congress to issue him a visa for only two weeks despite an ongoing ban, because Atiku's inability to visit the US was becoming a major liability in his quest to defeat president Buhari in the upcoming presidential election in a couple of weeks. The Reuter report says Atiku's US ban continues to be in effect and Atiku currently remains unable to visit the US because of two corruption cases against him in the states. NIGERIA, September – According to the report published by the Council on Foreign Relations, Nigeria has the highest percentage in the world of children not registered in school. The UN Human Development Index ranks Nigeria 152nd out of 188 countries. The report says the problem is worse in the southern part of Nigeria than in the northern. The north has 12 million children enrolled in madrassas, which even though not adequate, seems to help the numbers of unrolled kids in school up north. While the UN recommends 25% of national budget be spent on education, Nigeria spends 7.1. Well behind countries like Ethiopia which meets the 25% recommended threshold. Wealthy Nigerians send their kids to neighboring Ghana and other countries, while not so wealthy send thiers to private school. The poor, who are the owverwhelming majority, are left at the mercy of the decrepit public institutions. Source: http://atigari.com/2018/09/18/nigeria-has-highest-percentage-of-kids-not-in-schools/ |
UK, September 12 – A Nigerian national Benard Okorhi 39, who is currently seeking asylum in the United Kingdom, is battling efforts by the UK’s court to extradite him to the US to face fraud charges. The Allegations The United States Department of Justice allegation against Mr Okorhi, is that he was part of an elaborate US$15 -million dollar fraud scheme that targeted American businesses and individuals. The scam The case, dubbed Operation Keyboard Warrior by American authorities, targeted an alleged Africa-based conspiracy dating back to 2012. The scale of the alleged fraud is massive. The indictment alleges the fraud was based in Africa where the suspects tapped into the servers and email systems of a Memphis real estate company in 2016. They used fake email addresses and other means to find large transactions of money and would email other businesses to re-direct money to them, American authorities contend. Along with the real estate scams, the group allegedly also took part in “romance scams, fraudulent-check (cheque) scams, gold-buying scams, advance-fee scams and credit card scams,” dating back to 2012, according to a Western District of Tennesee news release from June. Both money and goods, such as cellphones and construction materials, were shipped from the U.S. to Ghana, South Africa and Nigeria through both victims and people recruited by the alleged fraudsters to help them. Often they used fake identifications to make social media profiles. The Extradition The UK crown prosecution is trying to secure Mr. Okorhi extradition to the US on the basis that they believe the allegation brought forward by the US. They argue that there is sufficient proof to show that the Nigerian man was involved in the online scam alongside persons from other countries including Mr. Babatunde Martins, 62, another of the accused who was among those arrested in Ghana. The Proof The UK prosecutors say a critical piece of evidence that justifies the need to extradite Mr Okorhi to the US, are email exchanges between Okohri and Martins, which includes a photo of Okohri that came from his Nigerian passport. They also argue that the email in question was linked to Okorhi’s Facebook page. Defense Okorhi’s defense are however putting up a strong case against his extradition, countering that the courts cannot be absolutely certain that the photo in question is that of Mr Okorhi. They contend that it does not make sense that Okorhi would send emails to himself, and that he may not have known the scheme was being carried out. They say Okorhi may have being a victim of identity theft. The case returns to London court with a decision on Sept. 18. CANADA – Delegates of the Conservative Party of Canada also known as the Tories, which is one of the major political parties in Canada, have voted to ban automatic citizenship for babies born in Canada. While the resolution reached by the delegates is non-binding and was only passed by a slim margin, it does expose growing antipathy towards birthright citizenship. Canada and the US are two of the only remaining countries that issue automatic citizenship to children born on their soil. Meaning when a baby is born in either of these two countries, whether or not by a resident or a visitor, the child automatically becomes a citizen. There have been worries that some might take advantage of this law to engage in a practice commonly called birth tourism, where people travel to either of these countries to give birth for the sole purpose of having their babies become citizens at birth. The resolution reached by the Tory delegates to ban birthright citizenship require that it be barred to any child not born to a parent who is a Canadian citizen or is a permanent resident. Supporters of the ban argue that the ban encourages “passport babies” who take away resources from Canadian residents. While critics of the ban, including opponents even within the Tories, arguing that the ban risks making some children born in Canada stateless and that the ban is even more extreme than what the US president Trump, who is widely regarded as anti-immigrant is proposing. source: http://atigari.com/2018/08/27/canada-tory-delegates-vote-to-end-canada-citizenship-at-birth/ |
