The president also warned the service chiefs that he would not hesitate to rejig the security architecture if the desired results don’t come in quickly.

Speaking to state house correspondents after the meeting, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno stated that although the military has made some progress, the president is determined to achieve a turnaround in the fortunes of the country.

in his words, he said;

“It is evident that a lot of successes have been recorded. Large numbers of people are surrendering in the northeast as a consequence of the relentless efforts of the armed forces, intelligence, and security agencies.

“This is very, very evident. We’ve never had such large numbers of people defecting from the other side, back to the Nigerian side, mainly, as a result of many issues within the theatre, issues of infighting among the various factions of the terrorist groups.

“But the new drive of the armed forces, the police, the intelligence agencies, there’s been greatest cooperation, greater synergy intelligence sharing, as well as our partners in the regional intelligence fusion unit.

“So the president was briefed, the president is quite happy that there’s been a tremendous success, especially with the advent of the new service chiefs and inspector-general of police.

“And he’s also made it very, very clear that he’s not ready to exit government as a failure. He is not going to tolerate that he’s made changes and is ready to make further changes if he is not satisfied. He is completely determined to ensure that there’s a turnaround in the fortunes in the theatre of operations.”

The NSA added that the president has given clear directives to the service chiefs to address the killings and unrest in Plateau State.

When asked about what the President is planning to do with members of Boko Haram who have surrendering, he said: “I don’t want to immediately divulge what has been decided on those plans till the president takes a firm decision.”

Nairaland / General / PIB Will Open Doors To New Investments In Nigeria’s Oil Industry – OPEC by NewsGeh: 10:24am On Aug 17, 2021
The Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammed Barkindo, has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari for signing into law the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

“I wish to extend my congratulations to you on signing into law the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), which marks a significant milestone for Nigeria’s oil industry and a historic achievement for your Presidency.

“With the stroke of a pen, you have inaugurated a new era for the industry following years of legislative efforts to strengthen the legal, regulatory, fiscal and governance framework of the petroleum sector.

“Indeed, the new law will enhance the Nigerian petroleum industry’s reputation, open the door to new investment and ultimately strengthen its position to meet the world’s growing demand for energy,” he said in a statement on Monday.

He added that the enactment of the legislation was timely as the investment outlook had become clouded by efforts aimed at accelerating a lower-carbon future.

According to him, the new law will help harness Nigeria’s potential to achieve its programme of raising oil production to 4 mb/d and oil reserves to 40 billion barrels, while also drawing on the country’s vast natural gas reserves to provide clean and efficient energy.

“In addition, these resources will be vital to supplying world markets with a broad portfolio of energy options and support global efforts to alleviate energy poverty as outlined in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7.

“The passage of the PIB by both houses of the National Assembly on 16 July and your act of signing it into law coincides with another significant milestone in our country’s history – the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s Membership of OPEC.

“This golden moment provides a unique opportunity to reflect upon Nigeria’s rise as a global energy supplier and partner,” he noted.

The OPEC scribe said since the 24th OPEC Conference on 12 July 1971, when Nigeria was welcomed as the 11th member country of the organisation, it had symbolised Africa’s leadership within OPEC and its pivotal support for global oil market stability.

He said the past year had been a time of enormous challenges for the world, for OPEC and for each member country.

Nairaland / General / First-ever Case Of Marburg Virus Disease Confirmed In Guinea by NewsGeh: 12:26pm On Aug 10, 2021
Health authorities in Guinea have confirmed a case of Marburg virus disease in the southern Gueckedou district. This is the first case of the disease identified in the country, and in West Africa.

Marburg is a highly infectious disease that causes haemorrhagic fever. It is in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola and was detected less than two months after Guinea declared an end to an Ebola outbreak.

A field laboratory in Gueckedou as well as Guinea’s national haemorrhagic fever laboratory which tested samples from a now-deceased patient confirmed the Marburg virus. Additional analysis by the Institut Pasteur in Senegal confirmed the result.

A medical team had been dispatched to probe the deteriorating condition of the patient who sought treatment at a local clinic in Koundou area in Gueckedou.

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa said “We applaud the alertness and the quick investigative action by Guinea’s health workers. The potential for the Marburg virus to spread far and wide means we need to stop it in its tracks”

“We are working with the health authorities to implement a swift response that builds on Guinea’s past experience and expertise in managing Ebola, which is transmitted in a similar way.”

Contact-tracing efforts are underway to find the people who may have been in contact with the patient. As the disease is appearing for the first time in the country, health authorities are launching public awareness and community mobilisation to raise consciousness and spur support to help curb widespread infection.

Nairaland / General / Swiss National Kidnapped In South-west Nigeria – Police by NewsGeh: 4:22pm On Aug 09, 2021
A Switzerland national has been abducted by gunmen in Ogun State, South-West Nigeria.

The Nigerian Police Force, on Sunday, said the man was abducted on Saturday after gunmen opened fire on his police escort on a road linking Ibese and Itori communities in the state.

Ogun State Police Spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the Swiss national and another victim kidnapped alongside were part of a small group visiting a cattle-breeding facility in the area.

Oyeyemi confirmed that the police and the vigilantes are on the trail of the kidnappers.

“The victims were coming from their farm when the kidnappers ambushed them, and the police escort there engaged them in a gun battle.

“Two of them were gunned down in the process while they made way with the expatriate and one other person.

“The police could not engage them further because of those already held hostage, but by the grace of God, we shall get them all. Our men together with the vigilante are currently on their trail.

“We also got an AK-47 loaded with 9 rounds of ammunition from them,” Oyeyemi stated.

Details of the abduction and whether the abductors have contacted authorities with ransom demands are still sketchy, but the Swiss Embassy says it is in contact with Nigerian authorities for clarification.

Heavy-armed criminal gangs, also called ‘bandits’, sometimes kidnap foreigners in Nigeria, mostly in the northwest and central regions of the country. This year, these criminal gangs have primarily targeted schools and universities to carry out mass kidnappings.

Since December, over a thousand students and pupils have been abducted. Most of them were released after their parents and guidance reportedly raised millions as ransom. Besides the bandits terrorizing parts of Nigeria, for the past 12 years, there has also been an Islamist insurgency in northeast Nigeria.

Nairaland / General / 18,000 To Write UTME Mop-up Exams – JAMB by NewsGeh: 10:11am On Jul 30, 2021
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has scheduled a mop-up Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 18,000 candidates for August 6 in selected locations in Nigeria.

JAMB’s Head, Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in a statement on Thursday, said no candidate, whose result had been duly released, would be rescheduled for another examination.

The statement read, “Following a detailed investigation and careful analysis of the highly-successful 2021 UTME, and with due consultation (resulting in gracious concession) with NECO, concerning the timetable of the council’s ongoing SSCE, JAMB has scheduled a mop-up UTME for Aug. 6, 2021, in some selected locations across the nation.

“No fewer than 18,000 candidates slated for the examination are being notified through both text messages on their designated phone numbers and their JAMB profiles.

“In addition, the candidates can check using their registration number on http://www.jamb.gov.ng/2021mopup.

Rescheduled categories include candidates who were unable to be scheduled for examinations in the initial round due to their inability to obtain the mandatory NINs or profile codes before the registration deadline. As a result, these candidates were required to purchase Bank Drafts (instead of the usual PINs) after the scheduled examination period, and they were then registered.

Also on the list are a few candidates who encountered peculiar biometric verification problems, or who failed biometric verification on the examination date (and were recaptured) but were not allowed to partake in the examination.

The statement noted that adequate screening arrangements had been made to reverify such claims and any candidate found to be involved in any form of impersonation would be identified for prosecution.

It also listed candidates who were unable to sit for the UTME, owing to the clash of timetables of the examination and the ongoing NABTEB examinations, and whose particulars had been verified and supplied directly to JAMB by NABTEB.

Nairaland / General / Nigeria’s Commercial Banks Directed To Sell Forex Directly To Customers by NewsGeh: 1:35pm On Jul 29, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to set up teller points in designated branches for the sale of Foreign Exchange (forex) to Nigerians.

The directive is sequel to CBN’s decision to discontinue the sale of forex to Nigerians through the Bureaux de Change operators.

The directive was contained in a letter to the DMBs by Haruna Mustafa, Director, Bank Supervision Department of the apex bank, on Thursday in Abuja.

“Further to the Monetary Policy Committee briefing of July 27, all DMBs are hereby reminded to set up teller points at designated branches across the country.

“This is to fulfil legitimate FX requests for Personal Travel Allowance, Business Travel Allowance, tuition fees, medical payments and SMEs transactions, among others.

“In this regard, DMBs are also required to adequately publicise the locations of the designated branches and make necessary arrangements to sell FX to customers in cash and/or electronically in compliance with extant regulations,” he said.

Mustafa further advised DMBs to ensure that no customer was turned back or refused FX provided that documentation and all other requirements are satisfied.

“Equally, undue delays, rationing and/or diversion of FX is strongly discouraged whilst DMBs are required to establish electronic application and alert systems to update customers on the status of their FX requests,” he added.

He explained that a toll-free line had been set up at the CBN for bank customers to escalate unresolved complaints related to their FX requests.

Mustafa said that the CBN would continue to closely monitor banks’ conduct and compliance with the directive in order to ensure an efficient FX market for all legitimate users.

Nairaland / General / Governor El-rufai Suspends School Resumption Indefinitely In Kaduna, Nigeria by NewsGeh: 9:42am On Jul 29, 2021
The Kaduna State government has suspended the resumption of schools across local governments of the state until further notice.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai while addressing the stakeholders’ meeting explained that the government took the decision due to the ongoing aggressive military operation against bandits in most parts of the state.

The meeting had in attendance the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), as well as professional and community-based associations that the operation was aimed at flushing the bandits out from their hideouts.

Governor El-Rufai emphasized that the government was committed to protecting vulnerable children from being attacked by fleeing bandits who were already feeling the superior firepower of the military.

He also disclosed that the military has deployed more troops to the state for the operation and warned the residents to be vigilant and mindful of unknown faces in their midst, saying fleeing bandits might infiltrate their communities

In his remarks, NMA Chairman in Kaduna, Dr. Aliyu Sokomba, asked the Federal Government of Nigeria to license the use of firearms for profiled citizens.

He stated that this was necessary to enable the people to protect themselves from being attacked by bandits since the security forces cannot be everywhere.

Sokomba believes licensing of firearms for citizens has become expedient due to the constant kidnapping of many people, including health workers.

A gender-based activist, Asma Mirza, who was also present at the meeting, stressed the need to deploy technology to the various flashpoints, including the forests and highways.

Kidnapping and banditry have become fast-growing organized crimes in Kaduna and some parts of the northwest region thereby posing a major security threat for the people.

Amid tension in which farmers have been forced to abandon their farms, some secondary schools and a tertiary institution were attacked by bandits recently in Kaduna.

Nairaland / General / Nigeria’s Central Bank Bans Sales Of Forex To Bdcs by NewsGeh: 1:22pm On Jul 28, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria has ended the sales of forex to Bureau De Change operators, saying the parallel market has become a conduit for illicit forex flows and fraud.

The bank said it will no longer grant applications for BDC licences in the country.

The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, said Tuesday in a live TV broadcast that henceforth, weekly sales of foreign exchange by the CBN will go directly to commercial banks.

“We are concerned that BDCs have allowed themselves to be used for graft,” Emefiele said.

He said several international bodies, including some embassies and donor agencies, have been complicit in illegal forex transactions that have hindered the flow of foreign exchange into Nigeria.

He said the organisations have chosen to channel forex through the black market than use the official Investors and Exporters (I&E) window, called Nafex.
