Henry240: Wrong wording by mean. I meant the J-10s Combat Radius, not range. It's combat radius is 550KM.
It's ferrying range is 825km. 1650 / 2. I guess the load and flight profile affects these ranges. http://chinese-military-aviation..co.uk/p/fighters-ii.htmlestimated): length 17.1m, height 5.4m, wingspan 9.8m, normal TO weight 12,400kg, max TO weight 18,600kg, internal fuel 4,500kg, max external load 6,600kg, g load +9/-3, max speed Mach 2.0 (high altitude)/Mach 1.2 (1,450km/h @ sea level), TO distance 400m, combat radius 1,100km, static ceiling 18,000m, ferry range 3,200km. However, the image below seems to be a semi-official leak

Henry240: Which brings me to another question, are the S.F units we see across Africa actually S.F units in the mould of the SAS, Delta, SEAL, Spestnaz Alpha or are the highly mobile units in the mould of the Australian 2 Commando? Zimbabwe does have an SAS unit in addition to the Para Regiment and the Commando Regiments. |

Henry240: For a country as large and sparsely populated as Namibia, do you actually need the J-10? It's range is just 500km.
How many J-10s are you expecting, when is the contract supposed to be signed?

MikeCZA: Can they afford to even leave their bases? Zimbabwean used to operate these in the 90s. I remember them being kitted more like the second picture than the Rhodesian version. Not sure what they have now.

frumentius: I hope you've been an observer of this forum for a while. Else, you'll be disappointed if you want honest discussions about African militaries. My advice no.1: stick to photos and you'll be fine. No.2: Ignore the insecure gnats that try to draw you in. Seems I am not able PM, can you please try PM. |

There is a side of me that can see how, generally, a cheaper system cannot perform the same level as a more expensive system. However, the procurement systems, are flawed. What is the role of selection trials? What about acceptance tests? How do you sign a document authorising shipment when you have not tested the system to the limits? I was having a very similar discussion with a friend today. I get disappointed in us. Also, while the Tz experience is real, is the cause the rocket system per se or they are not fielding all the sub-systems that supposed to make a complex system like that effective? I watched the Syrians loosing planes to rebels for years. When Russians went in, I expected to start loosing planes within days! no, it did not happen that way. The Su-24 shot dwon by Turkey does not count. However talking about inaccuracy of the MRLS, I was just watch this: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=02c_1457736826 . my God, they scatter. But they very same systems decimated Ukranian formations last year. Something about the smaller armies and complex systems I think. |

Do we know if any force on the continent has the 40km plus rockets for these systems? Or the guided types? I like it when we can make the most of a seemingly old system. |

Lots of politics ... ... A lot of these developments and decisions are mostly driven by politics, dirty secretive politics with public option generally well managed where it matters. |
