The old gear you guys used to wear makes your men seem so much more professional.

If you compare footage of your guys in Sierra Leon or Liberia to footage of your guys today... the "old boys" seem, aesthetically, to be the more professional army

Emphasis: aesthetically speaking, not refering to actual ability or quality but meerly the effect the uniform has on "image"

1.2.3...trouble breaking out on the thread. From the usual quarters deliberately miscronstruing your words! embarassed

Indian, Brazilian and SA special forces.
IBSAMAR 5: India, Brazil, South Africa Maritime Exercise held every 2 years, starting in 2008 with the host rotating amongst the 3 democracies in BRICS. Normally held in SA because it's central to both India and Brazil, this year's exercise was held in India because both the Brazilian and SA Navy were there for the International Fleet Review.

@Henry: you should have read the wailing in various Indian defence for after the first exercise when they compared the pics - not the equipment they chose to bring - of their SF to SA and Brazil! cool

More Exercise IBSAMAR V 2016. A real joint exercise of equals, where everybody brings their experience and learn from each other. No basic soldiering being taught! grin

there were no special forces soldiers participating from the Indian naval side cool
for the Indian navy the special forces equivalent is the MARCOS and another unit which is classified and they did not participate.
these soldiers are from regular naval units tasked with security of naval bases, assets, anti piracy and SAR ops.
these units are the precursor to the, to be raised in future Indian marine core.

The Brazilian Navy was represented by Brazilian Naval Ship Amazonas with Special Forces, commanded by Commander Alessander Felipe Imamura Carneiro.

The South African Navy was represented by South African Naval Ship SAS Spioenkop with integral helicopter and Special Forces, commanded by Captain MA Boucher.

The Indian Navy was represented by INS Mumbai guided missile destroyer, INS Trishul stealth frigate and INS Shalki Shishumar class submarine

IBSAMAR 5 mandate was Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Surface firings, Air Defences, Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS), Flying Operations, Search and Rescue and tactical procedures. and had nothing to do with dedicated Special Ops .

If Chad Were to Fall, ISIL Could Threaten All of Central Africa

Pushed back in Iraq and Syria, Daesh (ISIL/ISIS) has been attempting to establish a foothold in Libya. Speaking to Atlantico, French writer and geopolitical analyst Frederic Encel explained the threats facing the Central African country of Chad, and why it serves as a crucial foothold in preventing Daesh's spread south across the African continent.

Recently, professor Bakary Sembe of Senegal's Gaston Berger University warned that if the Chad 'protective barrier' were to fall, Daesh militants may quickly spread throughout the Sahel, the geographic zone between the Sahara Desert in northern Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa to the south.

With the webbings? huge back-pack? water bottle etc..? what you are seeing here is the new army, we're more focused on mobility and maneuvering not digging trenches and staying put. . now we have a better logistic system so no need for individual soldier to be heavily ladened with equipment that should be carried by support elements.

summary

we are a more mobile force now than before

Maybe internet warrior was too harsh. I am currently serving in the SANDF, as a planner. I am presently assigned to the Joint Operations division and have been working in the planning section on both active ops and exercises since 2010.
I don't make claims; I go by what I know and what I've experienced.
The very senior Indian, Brazilian and SA Special Forces officers who spend their time at JOps in SA and their respective countries every year planning these exercises every 2 years since 2008 are obviously fooling all of us.

Here in Nigeria, we see our army as an invincible force, a powerful force to be reckoned with... we believe that they are the most powerful land force in the world {which might be true if you talk about physical strenght, dedication and patriotism}.
If you take a Nigerian soldiers uniform he feels naked....
The Nigerian army have been in existence for a long time... fighting a new foe every day
keeping us safe
keeping Africa safe

take your time to enjoy this long photo journey...

True, I agree with you. Our ECOMOG days troops looked so professional in those old time gear, especially the all green with the big pouches and their good old FN-FAL rifles, they looked good looked 'warlike' and no nonsense. Two things, those days most troops tuck in their shirts, makes anyone look smart, now most will fly their shirts. Also those days less vehicles were available, so they need big pouches for ammo/water/food, but now so many Toyotas and LAVs to store ammo/other supplies.
