Business / Osinbajo, Elemelu, Dangote Others Seek Business Growth In Africa by nheugate02(m): 2:34am On Dec 09, 2017
Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and founder, Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu, were among prominent Africans that yesterday, unanimously agreed that entrepreneurship will create the needed jobs, increase the Gross Domestic Products (GDP), and generate revenue for governments on the continent.

Speaking at the 2017 Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Forum 2017, in Lagos, Osinbajo specifically noted that history has a way of tying entrepreneurs down, and can “equally tie us down compelling us to look backwards and becoming a barrier to achieving our goals.”
With the theme, “The Tyranny of History,” the Vice President stated that African political history is dominated by wars, famine, failures of the states. According to him: “Our economic history is characterised by poverty, infant mortality, illiteracy, among others. Our history can frighten us or cripple our hopes. Our failures of the past are tyrannical weapons of history. History is not only a record of the past, it is the past. It is gone. The history of Africa does not determine its future, unless we allow it. The days you live in now are better than the past. Many years ago, mobile phones didn’t exist, and you had to queue for hours at telephone exchange to make calls. Today, we can’t imagine life without our smart phones. We are getting nearing beating hunger and famine than before in human history. Tests have shown that the current generation are smarter than the past.”

The professor of law, who sounded philosophical continued, “Dreams pursued with single mindedness are more powerful than facts. Hopes and imaginations are more potent than history because your history is not your destiny.”On his part, Elumelu noted that entrepreneurship is a bottom-up solution to economic growth and development, focusing on empowering the individual, who in turn creates hope and opportunity in his or her own community.

Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he said, “I have committed $100m to identify, train and fund 10,000 African entrepreneurs over a 10-year period, with the goal of realising $10 billion in revenue for the continent and creating a million jobs. We want to incubate a new generation so that these young women and men can, themselves, become the catalysts for further entrepreneurial-led growth. The time is now to invest in our entrepreneurs. If Africa invests in our youths, the continent’s GDP could rise by $500 billion a year, and per capita income for Africa will grow by 55 per cent in the next four years.”

He emphasised that “Growth in Africa is our responsibility and our opportunity. Nobody, but us can develop Africa. Africa’s destiny lies in the hands of a new generation of African entrepreneurs. All of us are aware that our continent’s problems cannot be solved with rapid growth in population. This demographic explosion and the need to crate meaningful employment for the next generation cannot be solved by more government jobs- we must democratise job creation, and the surest way to achieve this is by creating and empowering entrepreneurs. Only entrepreneurs will create the millions of jobs that we need, to lift our economy out of poverty.

Dangote in his remarks, identified challenges of power, inconsistencies in policies, corruption, among others as factors dragging the continent back. The Forbes’ Africa richest man, who described the continent as a land of opportunities, urged “entrepreneurs to always develop solution-driven mindset, think big, start small, be prudent, passionate, build good teams, take risks, and be daring,” adding that failure is a precursor of success.Continuing, Elumelu stated: “If we turn to agriculture, everybody will be rich.”

“The Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship programme is driven by my inclusive economic philosophy of Africapitalism. We believe that a vibrant African-led private sector, with significant participation from entrepreneurs, is the key to unlocking Africa’s economic and social potentials. We are already seeing so many success stories. Companies such as CCHub (technology), BudgiT (civic advocacy) and COMSAT (technology), that received support from The Tony Elumelu Foundation, continue to break grounds in creating new tools to make our society a better and more prosperous place

“With bright and creative minds such as these, and the other 3, 000 entrepreneurs that The Tony Elumelu Foundation has empowered over three years, it is only a matter of time before young Africans build technologies that rival the Ubers and ebays of this world, and which have direct application to the lives and ambitions of our people in Africa.”

On their part, Governor Abdul’Aziz Abubakar Yari, of Zamfara State, his Katsina State counterpart, Alhaji Aminu Masari, CEO Honeywell Group, Oba Otudeko, urged the young entrepreneurs to be consistent in the pursuit of their goals.

Technology Market / 3 “ugly” Sites That Make Millions And What U Can Learn From Them by nheugate02(m): 2:01am On Dec 09, 2017
Does beautiful design matter?

If you look at the success of some of the most popular sites on the web, it seems to be a mixed verdict. Yes, many have had beautiful designs for years, but for some well-known sites, aesthetics promptly took a backseat to form and function… and stayed there.

And surprisingly, most of their visitors don’t seem to care.

There’s something comforting about a homely design. The average site portrays a kind of “mom and pop” flair that instantly lowers people’s built-in B.S. detectors and says, “Hey, we’re just like you!”

In fact, these ugly sites have gained such a fanatically loyal audience over the years that their owners wouldn’t dream of updating their design today. They pride themselves on a site that may not be much to look at, but it’s incredibly easy to use and understand.

Here are four such sites, as well as lessons we can learn from them:

#eBay

By today’s standards, eBay did everything wrong. Back in 1997, they plastered the site with banners, browser buttons, and a cluttered logo that breaks the rules of good logo design.

Today, they’ve toned down their elementary school-inspired color scheme, nixed the banners and provided a clearer path to action on the homepage, and their logo remains one of the most recognizable in the world.

But it’s still pretty ugly.

What We Can Learn from eBay:
EBay’s pages are designed to take you to the products you want to buy, as quickly as possible. It’s not just because that’s what’s profitable. It’s what people come to eBay to do: buy stuff. EBay knows this, and so the entire website is designed to help them.

If you’re running an e-commerce site, it’s a good approach to model, because everyone pretty much understands it. Even 80 year old grandmothers are supplementing their retirement income by selling stuff on eBay — and you know if grandma can use the website, it must be doing something right!

#Google

Can we really call Google “ugly?”

Well, maybe or maybe not, but it’s certainly spartan. Over the years, countless competitors have tried to spring up with more stylish, feature-rich layouts, but Google has so far beaten them all, remaining the undisputed king of the search engine hill.

In fact, Google seems to take pride in its minimalist designs. And why not? It’s one of the most popular websites in the world, and in 2009, they brought in almost $24 billion in revenue. Something seems to be working.

What We Can Learn from Google:
Remove the clutter.

Back when Google first started, it’s simple design was one of its biggest selling points. Everyone was used to the packed, portal-style homepages like Yahoo, and they were actually relieved to see such a simple page.

And it’s a lesson that applies to a lot more than just search. For example:

If visitors come to your website in search of a price quote, you could make your home page a calculator of sorts, asking them the necessary questions and then spitting out an estimate
If your audience consists mainly of beginners looking for information on a certain topic, you could publish a PDF beginner’s guide to your topic and then give it away on your home page
If your people are coming to your website to schedule an appointment, you could make your home page a calendar, where they can click a day and schedule a time
The key is to find out what task your audience wants to accomplish and then make it the focus of your website.

You can always increase the complexity once they become a customer or subscriber. For instance, Google may have an ultra-simple homepage, but if you sign up for an account, you can customize it with any number of widgets, making it as complicated as you want.

The important point, of course, is that it can’t become more complicated until after you sign up. This avoids confusing new users on the front end, while giving more experience customers everything they want at the back.

#LindaIkeji

A common argument within tech circles is that Nigerians do not like good design and they point to the continued success and growth of Linda Ikeji’s blog . What makes for good design? What makes a website usable? Why are seemingly poorly designed products successful?

How Does This Relate to Design?
When users decide to interact with your product, it’s because they need it to achieve a goal. Good design allows people achieve the task that they want to as quickly and easily as possible. When a user visits/uses your website/app/chatbot/other product, they should be able to accomplish what they set out to do without difficulty.

Based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Steven Bradley introduced the Design Hierarchy of Needs

The most important needs are functionality and reliability. Linda Ikeji and Nairaland fulfill those needs. Linda Ikeji’s blog provides gossip (functionality), is updated regularly and the stories are found to be true a lot of the time (reliability).

Why Bother?
Now you’re probably asking yourself: “if people care primarily about functionality, why should I bother with aesthetics?”

If your website is beautiful, but your users can’t easily do what they want to do on it, then it’s pretty much useless.

So, where do aesthetics come in? What stands you out from your competitors is how your product looks and feels. Androids and iOS devices pretty much have the same functions, but many people prefer Apple because they believe it’s more aesthetically pleasing.

You can have good design that isn’t beautiful, but you definitely can’t have good design that isn’t functional. So when you’re building products ask yourself: “is my design actually functional, or is it just nice colours and pixels?” Is your design truly good or do you just think it is? Can your users do what they need to easily?

Beautiful design is not always good design and good design is not always beautiful.

Think about Function First, Aesthetics Second
So should you immediately start scrutinizing every image on your site and turning all your links into a 90’s shade of blue?

Well… no. Don’t do that.

You should, however, focus on function first. Figure out what your users are there to do, and then help them do it.

For Google, it’s, “search.” For eBay’s, it’s, “buy (or sell) stuff.” For LindaIkeji, it’s, “gossip news.”

So, think about it:

Why did your visitors come to your website?

And how can you create a design that helps them?

Answer those questions, and whether or not your website is “ugly” will become secondary. You’ll already be on your way to a good design.

Jobs/Vacancies / Job Seeker Turns Entrepreneur... If You Wait!!! You Waste by nheugate02(m): 1:11am On Dec 09, 2017
The rate of Unemployment in Nigeria has risen quite a percentage higher.

New data published by Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) pegs the unemployment rate at 14.2% in the last quarter of 2016, up from 13.9% in the preceding quarter. It's the ninth consecutive quarter that the unemployment rate in Nigeria has increased.

With all these it can only mean one thing.. BAD Governance!!! Yeah right!!

This is one statement we have been hearing ever since we were young.. We always put the blame on the government.. but forgetting we also have a 75 percent role to play in the way our life goes.

here is a story of a young girl in Canada:

Evelyn Morett was in high school and scouring online job sites in search of part-time work - without success - back in 2011.

Frustrated, she questioned why there wasn't a job search website targeted to teens and students.

It was that experience that led her to develop a website aimed specifically at a youths in search of work. Morett took a year off after graduating high school to launch teenwork.ca, an online base of job listings for young people in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and a resource for youth needing help with their job searches.

"I found it quite inefficient and time consuming. It was hard to find a job," said Morett, of her traditional search at the time. "Many other students were expressing to me the same difficulties."

Since launching the website in January 2012, when she was 18, the response has been terrific and Morett now plans to take the site national.

The website has more than 3,000 job listings. It's a free service for job seekers. For employers, the costs for employers ranges from $50 for single 30-day listings to $500 for up to 12 months.

Interest in the site has grown in light of the labour picture among the younger generation.

While Alberta had the lowest unemployment rate in the country last month at 4.5 per cent, the rate for people aged 15 to 24 jumps to 8.9 per cent - 10.1 per cent for males and 7.6 per cent for females.

"Youth unemployment in Alberta is nearly twice as high as it is for the overall labour force. Much of that has to do with their lower levels of experience," said Todd Hirsch, senior economist with ATB Financial.

"It's quite normal to see young people struggling a bit to find work - even in booming economic times. It is the classic catch-22 situation: Without experience, they have trouble landing a job, and without landing a job, they have trouble gaining experience."

Eveyln's mother, Louise, administrates the website. Most job listings now are from Saskatoon - where Morett launched the site - and Edmonton. The goal now is to build a following in Calgary and Regina.

"It just makes it a lot easier for young people to find jobs that are targeted to them and for employers it makes it a lot easier for them because their ads are targeted to the potential employees," said Louise.

She said the website wants to solidify its presence in Saskatchewan and Alberta because that's where the economy is strong right now and where employers are starting to have a hard time to find employees.

The plan is then to expand to British Columbia and then in the eastern part of the country.

So my dear Job seeker.. look around there is a problem somewhere to solve..

Turn that problem solver to a money spinner.

#And the Beauty of it, is that nowadays, with a good idea, sharp mind and confidence you can have a lovely website where you can start your business from your room #

Business / Re: *Get a Professional website/mobile app dis season @ discounted prices* by nheugate02(m): 12:46am On Dec 09, 2017
The Clock is Ticking!!
Business / *why Many Great Ideas Foa(fail On Arrival) And How Not To Join The Band Wagon!!* by nheugate02(m): 12:44am On Dec 09, 2017
Breaks my heart.

According to Bloomberg, *8 out of 10 entrepreneurs* who start businesses with a very great idea fail within the first 18 months. A whopping 80% crash and burn.

But why? What can we learn from the colossal amount of failure with small business that we can apply to our own business aspirations?

At the surface level the primary reason businesses fail is they simply run out of cash.

But trust me -- the cracks in the foundation start well before the brutal day of financial collapse.

Thus I will give you 4 reasons for failure and more importantly, what you can do to avoid it happening to you:

Reason #1: Not really in touch with customers through deep dialogue.
An amazing thing happens when an entrepreneur sees a potential opportunity in the market, or dreams up a new idea for a product/service: they retreat to a cave.

this is the worst move an entrepreneur can make because complete understanding of your customer is imperative to your success. Listen -- in my mind entrepreneurs must walk 1,000 miles in the shoes of their customers. Not 10. Not 100. One thousand.

Your customer holds the key to your success deep in their pain, behavior, dreams, values and the jobs they are trying to accomplish.

Your Solution:
In 1999, four smart guys wrote a book called ‘The Cluetrain Manifesto’. Although the book is a tough read in my opinion, there is one silver bullet piece of wisdom shouting from the pages.

Markets are conversations.

Dialogue is key. And 140 character tweets don’t count. Real dialogue with real customers (via whatever channel is best for them).

Nathan Furr and Paul Ahlstrom, co-authors of the book ‘Nail It, Then Scale It’, said it best:

Which would you rather do -- talk to customers now and find out you were wrong or talk to customers a year and thousands of naira down the road and still find out you were wrong?”

You must try to be as open as possible when it comes to feedback channels. And one of the best and fastest way of getting them is through web platforms where you customers don't have to see you face to face before giving their feed backs.

Reason #2: No real differentiation in the market (read: lack of unique value propositions)
Entrepreneur.com just put out a story entitled “Why Everyone Will Have To Become An Entrepreneur”. If this holds true (and I think it will), instead of your competition being 5,000 other Tom, Dick and Harrys, it will soon be 50,000 of these guys.

Meaning? Plenty of noise and chaos for those without uniqueness fighting for the bottom scraps. Most times this is a slow killer of businesses. Barely hanging on, entrepreneurs with some customers and some revenue skimp along for months or even years. Every painful inch wondering to themselves if this is all there really is.

Your Solution: First, agree with me right now this is a core element which must be addressed. Entrepreneurs who take this lightly end up in trouble.
Entrepreneurs of today wants to do so much, so early in a short time of startup do are already doing so many things rather than creating a blue ocean of differentiation for themselves where they can reign.
They must learn to scale their business as slim as possible and build up on it.

Reason #3: Failure to communicate value propositions in clear, concise and compelling fashion.
Next up is the debilitating disease called ‘failure to communicate’. Many entrepreneurs work hard to discover a point of differentiation then blow it because they do not communicate their message in a clear, concise and compelling manner.

Your Solution: It’s pretty simple. Learn how to communicate better. Again, I reference point #1 above. If an entrepreneur is truly engaged in conversation (read: dialogue, not monologue), then you’ll learn the language of your customer.

Be the 3 Cs,
Be clear, concise, and compelling..don't beat around the bush!!!
With a good Design Sprint and understanding your value proposition communication will be superb with facilitation of the internet.

Reason #4: Inability to nail a profitable business model with proven revenue streams.
In the end, this is the sum total. Fail to accurately achieve product/market fit where money gets made, and you’re sunk. Entrepreneurs can actually have each of the four above reasons solved, but still miss the business model boat.

Your Solution: Startups need to move swiftly without spending tons of cash to figure out their secret sauce. Using tools and methodologies such as Minimum Viable Products, Lean Marketing and Experimentation is critical.

A perfect example of this comes from Tony Hsieh’s book ‘Delivering Happiness’, wherein he describes the early days of Zappos (the E-Commerce Online). He and his co-founders weren’t even sure back in the late 90’s that people would dare order shoes over the Internet. So they ran a quick test: Up goes a website with shoe images taken from manufacturers’ websites, some buy now buttons and watch to see what happens.

Think and move quickly, ‘fail fast’ if you’re going to fail at all, and nail your business model.

Otherwise, you’re in the 80% bracket my friend.

In all maximizing the power of the Internet cannot be over-emphasized...
