nah, pls for now do not attempt a triple boot with 9.10 ooooo!!!!!!
grub 2 does not support more than a dual boot for now. if u wanna triple bot, u have to soil and do some tweaaking to return togrub legacy.

the damn thing is giving too many issues, why not chill for like a month, by which extensive updates will have been made. for non intensive, or commited users i suggest waiting till mint comes out.

@ lynx, well just lets see.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Nobody: 7:14am On Nov 15, 2009
heh

already done it

turns out linux is stubborn about primary partitions.

during install, when formatting the 30gb partition i reserved for linux, after creating the 5gb swap file, it assigned an unusable to the remaining 25gbs . i have two hard disks 80 and 500gb,

the 500gb is in like 7 partitions. turns out three were primary partitions.

i had to quit, log into windows, and delete one of the partitions. back to ubuntu, i now had two primary partitions

as a noob, i have abslutely no idea about how to amend grubs dialog - my winloader dialog is tweaked to windows 7 ultimate and windows 7 maxed out . anyways, i restored my winloader using easybcd 2.0 beta, then added an ubuntu entry to it.

so where do i get drivers for an nvidia quadro fx3700m, i cant maximize the graphics effects

and whee is a tool for the grub dialog?

If i undastand u, u hav added d new ubuntu to d windows bootloader? If u hav n it boots leave it at dt.

Drivers 4 nvidia use d proprietory drivers tool, it will locate n download d drivers.

Am happy to hear u dnt hav screaming issues bt then u didnt upgrade. Apparently clean installs are not problematic.

2 do d grub thang u hav 2 use d live cd n d grub thang in terminal though am not sure bt i think u might hav 2 uninstall grub2. Which is asking 4 trouble.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 8:49am On Nov 15, 2009
D took is d best way but if u hav drivers installed previously u shld remove them first.

Odawise add dis ppa to ur software sources- https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/libs

Put dt link in a browser address bar so u can get d pgp key for it on d site it opens, then install nvidia-180-modaliases in synaptic or software mgr. D drivers will then be in proprietary hardware thingy.

But did u check d synaptic 4 nvidia drivers? I rmbr in jaunty they used 2 be there.

Odawise u go to nvidia.com n download d drivers n install manually.

I got a hang of it n was playing(took me a while 2 figure out i was runnin on ram in frugal. Then i decided 2 use d gparted dt comes wit it n create a new partition 4 it only 2 click d wrong thing n delete my allocation tables. Am still in shock! Disconsolate. I hav stuff priceless on dt pc!
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 1:26am On Nov 16, 2009
4llerbe i thot this was ubuntu linux section - not the jokes section; u shld just have left it not frugal,
by default even on a full installation it still runs in ram - unless u specify otherwise when booting;
besides how much ram are u even trying to save by the time u have all ur puppy programs running, you're
probably still using under 1 gb - unless you also decide to run a virtual machine or some other heavy application in puppy;
i remember the time i deleted my windows partition years ago, i think i was trying to install ubuntu5 or maybe ubuntu6l then
i was used to creating my partitions, formatting them then specifying which partition i wanted linux installed on but no,
ubuntu still insisted on checking them for errors and i wasnt comfortable with the message it was givin me
(i actually had a terminal session running at the same time) then i wanted to time mke2fs /dev/hda9 which would have put
a linux filsystem in the artition i wanted, insted i went to type /dev/hdb9 whic was my windows partition; men i vex big time
fortunately even in windows don't keep my user files in my installation partition but it was very annoying
Re: Ubuntu Linux by lynxnoon(m): 10:10am On Nov 16, 2009

@ weaver it aint funny jare, am still sore, tseew, kai!

anyways pls sum1 shld help me b4 i throw the damn lapie at a wall! i decided to install mint ( to save time, i dont have the time these days at least not till dec it seems) so i make new partitions, made a small one for the damn puppy this time, 1 home, 1 /, and installed mint on the /, made 1 swap too

i hope i got the idea right sha, cos the only partition that showed in the computer was the puppy partition!

now to the problem, i did the modprobe thingy like i did with jaunty and added it to modules (this time it gave some strange pops and groans) anyways i rebooted and still did not have sound.

i ran alsamixer in terminal and saw all the mixer thingy, was able to move it and all that, was not muted.

checked the sound tab and saw that the card was recognised, had even been recognised from the onset b4 modprobe, strangely! so i checked and saw that i could increase vol and all but the speaker icon had a red x, apparently muted, clicking does not unmute!

wetin be dis 1 again oooooo! i go break dis pc oooooo!!!!!!

2.

i installed the puppy to hard disk but thot it wise not to write anything to mbr, now how do i add it to grub so i can boot into it also, and pls i do not want that thing all the time on ram!

SO BIKO @WEAVER AND ALL, MAKE UNA HELP ME OOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ LYNX, na yori yori u dey o!!!! i take it the updates helped? anyway, i tried the thing myself and it gave me no issues bar some jockey thing that was crashing, but when i think of all the work to get drivers, java etc, i change to mint. maybe when i get time i will install on my oda pc
Re: Ubuntu Linux by lynxnoon(m): 7:44pm On Nov 16, 2009

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:12am On Nov 18, 2009
Ah weaver, thanx jare, i don solve d sound ish. I took it from d base, unloaded all d sound stuff n started ova. I found dt d alsa still didnt work bt oss did so am ok wit dt.

Wat i need help wit is d puppy ish above. Then i want to use it @ work on d office pc wit winblows, am tired of free virus evryday. If i do frugal, hw do i combine wit xp. I cant write d mbr obviously, i dont want to boot cd all d time n i really not lookin 2 d ram stuff all d time. Its not my pc. So if i resize xp 2 make space 4 it where do i go from there? Install 2 hd, hw 2 boot witout cd n hw not to run on ram all d time.

Long thing shey?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by lynxnoon(m): 9:46am On Nov 18, 2009
very long tin
well me am sticking to mint n ubuntu
by d way finally fixeddat issue tru partial update. . . . tho d grub is stil 1.5 n not 2.0. . . . wats d difence anyway? undecided
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:42am On Nov 18, 2009
@lynx grub1 is actually grub version 0.x while grub2 is grub version 1.x

@4llerbe let me see, when i did it on my office lappy i used grub4dos; what you could do is
install grub on a flash drive for your frugal install - just to get the menu.lst config, then
put grub4dos on your system; for instance on lappy this is what i did
copied the files grldr, gldr.mbr (i think only one is actually necessary but just to be on the safe side),
menu.lst (in fact you can use the one in your flash drive) and grub.exe to my drive c:
after that i added an entry to boot.ini (system properties -> advanced -> startup and recovery settings -> system startup edit)
in my entry i added the line c:\grldr="Grub"
(i could have used "puppy" but i had more than 1 linux distro that i was using in a "frugal" install manner);
close and you should see the entry when you startup your pc.
if it doesn't boot try changing the line to c:\grldr.mbr="Grub"

note: this should work with winxp or 2000; with vista or 7 i can't guarantee; if you are using either and having
problem you might have to google it up

as for running from ram, you should look at the boot options that come up when u first startup
i can't remember what option is used to not load into ram by default maybe "puppy pfix=noram"
or something like that but when the Puppy boot menu (not grub o) comes up press f2 to see the
list of options

@lynx grub1 is actually grub version 0.x while grub2 is grub version 1.x
i ges am on grub2 den wink wink
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 11:20pm On Nov 18, 2009
if i say i understand u, na lie i lie.

i even used the excuse of virus to format the pc today, made new partitions, one ext2 and one ntfs for the xp.
i installed the puppy to the ext 2 and wanted to write grub to mbr, figured if xp overwrites it shld see the puppy but if not i repair the grub ntry to add xp. now the puppy refuses to write mbr saying its not a linux fs, its ext2 o !

i dunno jare, even where the thing d thing install i could not boot it unless with the cd!
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 4:50am On Nov 19, 2009
ok just explain this part, i installed the windows back, then booted the pupy cd, did a frugal install, then this time it refused to wrie to the mbr when i wanted to, how am i gonna be booting the frugal?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:30am On Nov 19, 2009
@4llerbe
what command do you use when you want to install to mbr?
assuming winxp is /dev/sda1 and puppy in /dev/sda2
what i would recommend is that when in grub (i.e in a terminal type grub then) type
root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0,1)
this should install grub in the mbr of your puppy partition

copy the menu.lst file to a partition that is recognisable by windows (just in case you can't boot back into puppy)

then you can go to this site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/grub4dos and get grub4dos (you may read my
previous post to get some info on configuring it if you feel it's necessary)
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 7:34pm On Nov 19, 2009
D grub dos thingy looked like it worked sha. Tanx weaver.

I sha sumhw trial n error made it boot. Bummer is sound is acting up. Works, wont work next boot, d alsa prog notwithstanding.

Then even worse it wont mount a flash no matter hw i try. D winblows works fine. Flash ok

Wonder o, if i rmbr, e be lyk wen on livecd n see am. Well, Na my main reason b dt o, all d flash wey dem go dey bring 2 copy stuff.

Den i install some pets, some work, some won't, esp bluetooth!
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 11:14am On Nov 20, 2009

only 1 soundcard on that pc? i only have that type of problem with multiple soundcards
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 10:26pm On Nov 20, 2009
Its kuku 1 my bro. 1 card. Its a p3 odawise id hav put ubuntu on it. Office too stingy 2 buy beta hardware.

Bluetooth i heard works cos on murga-linux.com, 1 mod is swearing ova evrytin dt he built d bluetooth .pets n they work.
Not 4 me they dhdnt. I installed it but it didnt work. I checked d dependencies n saw it was asking for wat id already installed.

Abeg, not bad 4 a small distro sha.
