Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 5:52pm On Nov 26, 2009
ahh multiget fall my hand! u sure say u set am well? u sure?

anyways, i can see that u dey yori yori. will do the installs on diff partitions of course. i don get the scope. na one bootable partition plus logical partition for the oda linux distros, and one for home hehe.

ehen lynx b4 i also forget, i remember ur misadventure with aptoncd, well u dont need that at all, there is a folder i think in /var where every package u download in apt or synaptic gets its deb stored. back up that into a cd and u can always get ur apps back whenever u reinstall or format! as in am ashamed of my self for not figuring that out a long time ago. bye bye to re downloads. las last i upgrade them l8r
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 12:32pm On Nov 28, 2009
just downloaded lighthouse linux which is actually customised puppy linux; personally i feel puppy is not as fully featured as it used to be even tho i cld always add those features i wanted, anyway i have put it on my company laptop as a frugal install, ok it's quite large and all but even without the extra addons i still prepare it to the default puppy, by default it comes with 3 window managers jwm, icewm and lxde and 2 file managers rox and pcmanfm; i think this is the puppy 4 me sha

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 2:35pm On Nov 28, 2009
Av wanted 2 get dt lighthouse puppy o! It seemed 2 b d only 1 of all d pimped pups dt made sense, bt my internet game is not it right now. Zain is not behavin.

My attraction sef is d eyecandy. D normal puppy reminds me of cartoons. Nice but i still get questions like is dis a os? As in REALLY?!!
Lol
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 6:28pm On Nov 28, 2009

well me i'm not complaining abt my service sha but i know what u ,mean about the eyecandy
i don't particularly like jwm and rox

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:52pm On Dec 02, 2009
@4llerbe, just in case you don't know the thing about dos type partitions is that you can have only 4 primary partitions
however one and only one of those primary partitions can be an extended partition. now while technically you can have up to
40 (i think) logical partitions wich are created in the extended partition, if your hard disk is sata or of linux sees all your partitions
as /dev/sd* (i.e. /dev/sda1, dev/sda2 , /dev/sdb1/ , ) you can have only 15 logical partitions in an extended partition; the reason
has something to do with the fact that the sata driver does (or at least used to do ) scsi emulation and apparently u could only
have 15 scsi disks on one port (i think again)
anyway if you're sure you'll not need more than 4 partitions you can make all of them just primary partitions, however if you think
you may need more in the future then make it 3 primary and 1 extended partition and you can then make as many logical partitions as you think you'll need in that extended partition
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 2:03pm On Dec 03, 2009
ok sir. thank u sir. yessir: lol. actualy i knw ubuntu will install into a logical partition. not just sure about winblows. hummn, which reminds me hw do u manage 2 keep a seperate partition for windows? u cant share a ext partition wit windows and i dont think u can use ntfs as home? anyway which is fully read n write in ubuntu fat or ntfs? i think its fat shey?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 3:51pm On Dec 03, 2009
windows too will, my win 7 is actually installed in an logical partition; by default linux supports
fat with the vfat driver, the ntfs driver that comes with the linux kernel on the other hand
has only safe read access; however there's another driver ntfs-3g which is based on
fuse (file in user space) which allows ntfs write and most linux distros have it, puppy
definitely does, and so does ubuntu; If you decide to edit /etc/fstab make sure the driver
you use is ntfs-3g and not ntfs unless you are sure you'll never want to write on your ntfs partition
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:59pm On Dec 03, 2009
ok sir! u see i was askin cos i was thinkin abt sharin stuff like music btw d 2 os n dnt tink /home can b ntfs shey? lol. think il stick 2 a dual boot jare. dnt see d need 4 more n 1 linux. ehen pls write out dt java path stuff 4 me. 4 settin java afta installing.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:40am On Dec 04, 2009
will talk abt the java stuff later, but on my pc i have a fat partition where i put all my music in fact
another where i have backups of my installer files (linux) another for the windows backups
in short i almost don't keep any non-system files on my my os partition or at least i back them up on
another partition so that if i lose all my data i'm still cool ands i can share them across oses
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 11:48pm On Dec 09, 2009
I lost pwr on my system. And wen i l8r put it on d thing booted, showed me d splash screen then goes into a terminal. Iv tried all i rmbr, startx, gdm, stopped d gdm n ran reconfigure. Still no way. Wats goin on? Its kaput shey?

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:47am On Dec 11, 2009
wow oyb i love ur setup, what is your total disk capacity?

mr 4llerbe if u're in lagos, just call me i think i still have those cd i burnt 4 u that u didn't come to collect,
we can arrange to meet somewhere, of course most of them are last year; as for jaunty i can only lend u the cd
since it's an original (by the way i thot u said you were sent karmic)

as for your X problem, i think there's log file i think /var/log/xorg.log or something like that, if u can't find try locate xorg.log
then use tail <xorg.log path> that should give u an idea of what is wrong
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 2:02pm On Dec 11, 2009
i still have karmic and kubuntu, it was the karmic that did the nonsense. then i googled and found that the gdm sef comes broken!!!! amazing. and i have been looking for a way to even restart the thing no way. wat am i going to do with a terminal window. humph!

i installed kubuntu yesternite and it took me all of five minutes to decide i still did not like it. are u sure the only difference is the gdm? there was sometin about the thing that just i dunno, puts me off. i couldnt even change the foolish wallpaper.

these cds would happen to be which distros? includes mint?

am in lagos naw, i live in lagos, just go on excursions to weird places. are u still hanging out at ogba weekends, so i can come 2 get them?

@OYB
PLS I KNOW AM REALLY WEIRD BUT WHAT IN GODS NAME IS THAT SCREENSHOT? DO U WORSHIP THAT PC OR SUMTIN? HAHA!!!!! I BOW O!!!!
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 3:04pm On Dec 11, 2009
mint, puppy4; i don't remember if i had got opensuse for u too;
the first -and last time i tried kubuntu i didn't like it much either even though i generally prefer kde to gnome
if u want i cld also dash u my mandriva (i have a problem with ditros that automatically mount all my partitions, all 20+ of them - puppy does too but i'm not afraid of working on it - even if it means breaking it after all i can just delete my save file and start again)

no mind oyb, he's oppressing us with his terabyte harddisk
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 3:15pm On Dec 11, 2009
ahhh, ur the man. lets make that puppy lighthouse puppy naw.

am very greedy so i will take all u give me. which brings to mind how do u store ur cds? mine were brand new, i put them in a bag and stored them somewhere a few months later they had all gone bad!!!! the cds were supposed to good ones! ithink i will just be storing iso's on my pc henceforth.

ok so i beep u soon, lemme buy credit. am using my sim to do fbt so no credit on top grin grin grin grin grin

nb. i dey follow some ignoramuses drag am for that win7 thread, i need some competent support
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 3:21pm On Dec 11, 2009
lighthouse abi? ok
i usually buy the large pack of cds and i buy cases with them - and i have a partition where i keep my isos
in fact on more than one occasion i have used a virtual machine to install on my harddisk directly
from iso - though it can be very slow, especially using a distro like opensuse, i still have beef for kde4
by all means call, u still have my number right?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 11:58pm On Dec 12, 2009
ok where o i start, first thanks weaver, i truly appreciate.

now i see a bit of the reason why you people do all these other OS'es. man it was like a candy store. but still i dunno if its just me but they really seem to be the same thing to me!!!! what is different in mandriva and ubuntu oda than the default apps, the support u get and maybe performance. if not u could take one for the oda easily!!! even the KDE versions.

anyway lemme do it in this manner,
1. MEPIS.: NOW THIS IS temptation!!!!! pure and simple. wonderful default rendition of KDE, great performance in livecd mode, saw all my hardware, worked without soiling, excellent collection of default apps!!! im in love.

drawback, i dunno ,its debian shey? so my knowledge in ubuntu simply ports over? terminal cmds, installing, what repos do they use? mepis or ubuntu? how does coping workout?

and also kde 3.5, am sure there are newer ones? will this one still bne supported fully.

2. FEDORA- forget it, too slow for my liking, bare bones install lil apps, seems to be a poor attempt at ubuntu. same interface.

3. MINT- its felicia! sob sob, thats a bit old aint it. isnt that 8.04? is that still supported? hmmnn, i just dunno.

4. MANDRIVA- HMMMNNNN, this is ubuntu to me o, i dont knw wat tthe diff is in these os'es, the engines shey, just there does av a couple of apps too is an option but uncertainties making me think twice. these are all angels i dunno, ubuntu is just fine

5 SLAX. forget it, puppy makes it look inferior!! plus its slower than puppy. display too basic.

6 LIGHTHOUSE PUPPY- now this guy makes me really proud. now this is a fully functional OS with class. all those addons are just what is needed. u could put a bank on this. someone should give that fella a kiss for me. thats good work. every thing even wine.

so i dunno, mint felicia, mepis or mandriva. i just want a smooth transition. those my options
the winners are lighthouse, mepis, mint, mandriva
