Some diseases get a lot of attention and subsequently people are aware of how to cater for their suffering loved ones.

Asthma; I don't know how many people 'really' know what an asthma patient feels like; the reactions to dust, pollens, cold food/drinks, fan , harsh weather, colesterol-containing foods, etc, a host of things can trigger an asthma "attack".

People around may be insensitive to these, and may inadvertently make the life of a sufferer worsened. Yet, there is no cure, but numerous suppresants(amyinophyline; ventolin etc)

I would like asthma sufferers, or those who care for them to tell me how they cope; drugs they use, and preventive measures; and testimonies if any has been "healed".

I used to have asthma attacks when i was younger. Now i don't have them anymore
I protect my chest, dress warm and avoid letting the wind hit my chest by any means necessary
I stay away from strong products like strong hair creams, strong perfumes,( i wouldnt date or marry any woman who uses these) stay away from animal dander eg from cats and dogs
I avoid dust. dust is the easiest way to trigger an attack.
I don't use inhalers. inhalers made my attacks worse. I used ventolin and piriton almost every night those were hard times couldn't sleep well cause mucus from my lungs blocked my air pipes and i could not breathe

Ok if this is a true story, then the guy in question is very stupid and insensitive how would you not know that somebody is having an attack? just picture running a 5 kilometer race, you are out of breath right? then at the end of the race someone hands you a straw, and tells you to use it to breathe. Thats what an asthma attack is! You can't breathe well because your airways are blocked, so anybody who compares it to sexual pleasure is a damn fool a slowpoke, idiot, for lack of better words. I just feel so strongly about this issue.

it goes away naturally for some people and then comes back when they're older.
For some it's not serious (mild asthma).

My doc says i might develop it (i have respiratory allergies) so i stay away from dust, pollen and triggers (anything with a strong smell basically). I take my meds too so i'm good to go i think.

if you have asthma, carry your inhaler w/ you wherever you go!!

well at my high school there were a lot asthmatic patients and some with bronchitis and others with hay fever. those with conditions like hayfever and bronchitis should be careful to take their medication so that it does not become full blown asthma. asthma first and foremost is an allergy so it can go away and there are different levels of seriousness of asthma.

some who is always having serious atttacks and ending up in hospital could be prone to death. i personally knew at least two ppl who had crazy attacks mehn, it was fear all the way but by the grace of God they are alive today and i believe the attacks have lessened in intensity and occurence. unfortunately i do know a girl who died from having an asthma attack. yes she had her inhaler, as you should always do but she panicked because of the intensity of the attack which made everything worse, efforts to give her some hydrocortisone or whatever the second line of treatment is was not fruitful due to agitation and inability to find a vein. she was rushed to the hospital but had to make a detour to a smaller clinic because her condition was worsening, but alas it was too late

what brought on the attack? over excitement for independence day
so rest in peace darling soala, till we meet again

so avoid being in the rain, colds, over strenous activity adn most importantly DO NOT PANIC

A girl in my secondary school died of Asthma and the funny thing is before that no one took asthma seriously we just used to fake and say we had asthma to avoid punishments like sweeping and jogging

@ Rare
Asthma is not a disease, please.

I've been asthmatic (unfortunately, hereditary) since birth. Cold is definitely not good, i mean exposing your body, especially your ribs directly to cold. It's worse when you are FAT. I have a friend who has outgrown his asthma simply by jogging all the time. Outgrown in the sense that he has not had an attack or symptom in the last 6 years.
Sleep in a well ventilated room. If you depend on AC make sure you have a back up generator at night coz if not, by the time there's outage, you'd be gasping for breath in the middle of the night.
DO NOT SMOKE. Your trachea is too thin already and there could be mucus blocking them, you shouldn't add tobacco particles to make it worse.

I do a lot of excercise at times, and i run 100 metres, i make 12secs mind you cheesy

You should know when its coming, at least it doesn't just come immediately unless you are doing some heavy exercise like pushing a car, gyming or running (on an on) so whenever you notice it, reduce your workload at all cost and REFUSE to be stressed up. Sit on a chair with ur elbows above your shoulder (sit facing the backrest).

Some foods or fruits are good, i know of ginger and garlic and i've heard of supplements too. I have an inhaler (VEntolin - dats all)
That's all for now. I wish all o' you well, and most importantly, PRAY TO YOUR CREATOR. And don't think about it coz there's nothing you can do about it.

i think there are now inhalers that do include glucocorticoids and beta2 adrenoceptors. This inhalers are currently the best line of treatment for asthma.
New drugs are presently undergoing clinical trials but it will be yrs before any form of cure for asthama will ever be found because asthama is basically an abnormal response of the body's immune system to harmless antigens that would normally pass unoticed in normal individuals.

Treatment - Take your drugs, do not smoke and stay away from allergens!

i have a lot of asthma patients and so ive noticed that they do better with a daily therapy of advair which is mix of fluticasone and salmeterol (steroid and bronchodialator respectively). advair is meant to manage asthma as in prevent future asthma attacks, its not meant to stop an athma attack, thats what ur albuterol inhaler is for.

What are the symtoms of asthma? When one is having difficulty in breathing, does that mean the one is asthmatic. I want to know if one can just develop it after twenty year. When is no no sure thing in the family before

Exactly! that is the best medication available right now. The steroids (fluticasone) are meant to relieve inflammatory symptoms, i.e increased mucus production. salmeterol is a beta2 agonist drug that is meant to relax bronchoalveolar smooth muscles so you can breathe better. Presently the best therapy available! There are NO drugs that can PREVENT asthma attacks just yet, probably never will be because asthma is your own body's reaction to harmless antigens, blocking them might lead to immunosuppression which means you become more susceptible than others to opportunistic infections.

sudden feeling of chest tightening, difficulty breathing/gasping for breath, most times your heart starts beating faster because your brain wants to get more oxygen to vital organs of your body as it feels you are not getting enough. It is possible to develop asthma later in life but most adults are probably only experiencing an allergic attack and may not be due to asthma. simply find what you are reacting to and remove it!
My brother used to have symptoms when he was younger but he's outgrown them now.

I think I get the summary of how to take care of self. It is really summarised by the one golden rule: " Find out what your body reacts to; and avoid it completely. With discipline you'll get used to it"

I remember whenever I'm out with my guys; and they are always stunned that I reject cold drinks. I don't need to explain. Simply, I just do not want to, that's my reply to any question.

Does anybody use the drug; DEXACORTIN (made in Ghana)? When I started using it ; it was like magic. I didn't have an attack for about a year and a half. I also developed very fat cheeks during the time. I stopped using it after this relief as the drug's documentation ordered. But now, I get attacks a little more often; albeit mild attacks, nothing outrageous.

The most annoying thought of asthma is that you have to depend on some kind of medication lifelong. It's scary!!!
But you need to see me when I'm relieved; I the greatest soccer player amongst my friends. What irony?!

Pele Rare, understand ur anger at this predicament. It's unfortunate that some don't seem to outgrow the ailment as some do.
The fattening of your cheeks is what is know as moon facies. It is a side effect of corticosteroid therapy, you might also notice you start getting "extra tires" around your abdomen too. Another side effect is you may find urself easily developing secondary infections so you want to be extra careful as corticosteroids do suppress your immune system. Also it is advisable not to be on steroids for too long as it may cause shrinking of your adrenal glands which means you would have to remain on steroid therapy for life since your body can no longer produce its own steroids.
Advair like bluenubian suggested earlier might be a very good therapy for you, it is proven to be very effective and attacks asthma from two different cellular stand points.
One note of caution - Never go off steroid therapy abruptly!!! Wean yourself off it gradually by reducing your dosage with time before you eventually stop.

My daughter has asthma she had to inhale when she was small with a paryboy an in hailing marchine.
Now she uses Viani Mite. daily.
We had an allergy test done also.
She is not allowes to roll in grass i dust her room very often and expose of all these dust catchers.(unnecessary items in the room that gather dust.
We only get a fake tree for Christmas.
When she plays outside in the spring i wash her hair almost every day.
She also suffers under a lot of nose bleeding depending on the pollings in the air.

Thank you for the advice. I know the root of my problem now, but the problem is being able to identify it. Because i am working in a manufacturing company that uses all kind of chemicals. But i will try to avoid the harsh ones if i can.

Hey rare i drink coke with no ice too! you're not the only one
did you ever have an attack after laughing too hard. Then i used to avoid running/laughing too hard.
find out what triggers your attack and eliminate it it's very hard to do., me i had to come to yankee to eliminate dust. Naija you have to sweep the living room, then sweep the compound then dust your aunty's boysquaters, then you play football on red dusty sand. cool yourself with cold drinks, then on your way home you have to run to catch a moving bus. Then have the attack at night.

Me: Sir I can't sweep i'm asthmathic.
Teacher: If you dont do it i'll give you 12 strokes!!!!!"

i am quite amazed and yet impressed to see true opinions and to read from the real posters from their personal experiences.

Its really hard to cope when you are asmathic but one thing i know for sure is, there is a cure for it here in nigeria but meeting the true ones is quite rare, hard to get and hard to find the true ones. i use to be one till 1996 when i finally got rid of it, its was quite hard each time i have the attacks then and it was damn too serious and too bloody, funny enough no one can feel or understand you better than yourself during the time of the attack. herbal drugs really work and from the time i got my cure or if i am allowed to use the word "outgrown" mine, i have helped quite a lot of people through the same way i was helped. its damn hard and since 1996, i do virtually everything, which includes blending with any imv or any kinda weather or those things that triggers the attack.i take raw ice now and i do alot of racing!

"Garri" is one thing that triggers the attack most at that time and when i laugh just too much. its like a stigma when you have to carry your medications all around, although i was recommended to stay on ventolin at that time but my parents wont lemme because they felt it would on widen the spectrum and it would become more harmful when i am used to ventolin but since 1996, i have gone for quite a number of test and its been confirmed that i am asthma free.

For all those presently undergoing the attack, i am so sorry and i feel you close to my heart, its so hard especially when you meet that asmathic kid who cant even describe what he/she feels.

My daughter even takes her pellow with her.
Dont ask me what nose bleeding has to do with Asthma but if she dose not take it along thats 3 days nose bleeding and up to 4 times a day.
Re: Asthma Patients. How Do You Make Your Life Bearable? by Ashiwaju(m): 2:26pm On Jun 27, 2006
dts one critical case, nose bleeding somehow has something to do with asthma, you get some bleeding when its too serious and too critical. some would even faint, you notice some people with high shoulders and their chest is always up when they have an attack. the causes are yet unknown so sad.

and the SS patients too has nose bleeding
Re: Asthma Patients. How Do You Make Your Life Bearable? by mamaput(f): 2:38pm On Jun 27, 2006
wELL THE Medication my daughter takes (daily ) helps alot .She has no SS not even AS because my dad is AA and my mum was white.
But i remember once i brought a christmas tree and her nose started to run(Blood) like a tap.
I had to throw the tree away after 2 days. It was not yet xmas.
People with too many anamals in the house.
I had wanted to get rid of the cat but we tested her . With cat hair there is not much problem.
A rabbit or bird will be worse the DR says. because of the feathers and the hay.

Asthma and hay fever are just the worst.
Re: Asthma Patients. How Do You Make Your Life Bearable? by Ashiwaju(m): 2:59pm On Jun 27, 2006
dont know much about hay fever but i hear they could lead asthma
Re: Asthma Patients. How Do You Make Your Life Bearable? by otokx(m): 5:46pm On Jun 28, 2006
I still get symptoms of asthma from time to time now but not as severe as before. The "good" thing about asthma is that it gives a lot of signal before manifesting itself; giving you time to adjust your schedule. Drinking garri, eating indomie, groundnuts, corn, fried yam is sure to trigger an attack in me so I avoid such.

Sometimes, sudden change in weather conditions can also be a cause. Infact I have noticed that the humidity in Port Harcourt is so much that asthmatic people suffer a lot. I have been told that if i should go to such places as Abuja, Jos, Lokoja or Akure where there is less humidity that it will be much better for me. Taking my inhaler around is something i do although i don't necessarily use it as often because I believe more in preventive measures. Any time I get the warning signs especially on Sundays then I have to skip church because our meetings are very loud and full of activity - dancing, singing and the penterastal "u know what"
Re: Asthma Patients. How Do You Make Your Life Bearable? by Bobbyaf(m): 3:10am On Jul 31, 2006
Well I grew out mine, but I rememebr I used to faint easily after extreme exertions. One of the best things for asthmas is to use O-3 supplements. The O-3 somehow plays a role in reducing the body's over production of mucous, which triggers the problem.

I am a health and lifestyle consultant , and have seen my friends put their asthmatic children on O-3 supplements, and believe me after awhile the asthma just disappeared. Its really amazing what nutrition can do.
