Division Of Nigeria (for Or Against?) : Vote Now! by Ellyptical: 10:58am On Jan 20, 2010
The news has it that Sudan will hold a referendum for the south to secede after votes are cast and the majority of the votes from the seceding  south, are in favour of the division.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Sudanese_independence_referendum,_2011

Going by the agitation and instability in Nigeria today, one may say that the division of Nigeria is near. However, once would always love to imagine that it would be peaceful, though we know it may not.
In the actual practice, only the people who are agitating for secession are allowed to vote if they want to pull out of the nation (like was the case in Canada's Quebec) but since we cannot censor the states of origin of the people on the forum, it would be thrown open.

Vote for the secession of Nigeria into the following nations
1) Arewa Republic
2) Republic of Biafra
3) Niger Delta Republic
4) Oduduwa Republic

After Voting, please drop your geopolitical zone, State of Origin, Region (town or village withing your state) and and the country you will belong to.
Use the format below.
e.g

South South/Delta/Asaba/Biafra or

South South/Rivers/Bonny/Niger Delta Republic or

South East/Anambra/Onitcha/Biafra or

North West/Sokoto/Sokoto/Arewa or

South West/Lagos/Epe/Oduduwa

If you vote against secession, please also drop your details but you do not need to drop the country i.e
e.g.
South West/Lagos/Epe

What's this new division you are trying to sneak in - Niger Delta Republic?

Have you not considered the population make up of these territories?

The Niger Delta Republic is unlikely to have a population above 5 Million of which a majority would be of Igbo heritage. Therefore the region would be constantly under threat of aniliation from its bordering neighbours? Biafra is likely to overrun it within weeks?

The Division should be three - the same as before the civil war - North, West and Eastern Nigeria.

Or even better - just 2 divisions; Biafra and 'The Rest Of Them' (Nigeria)

Hmm!

Not Voting For, not Voting Against

My Stand? A Nation put together by GOD cannot be divided
by mere men, no matter how hard we try.

Yes we all have the right to whatever our reasons, grievance,
opinion, etc, are; I feel the sometimes. But, I can tell you
categorically that we can't even tell correctly if secessions will
be the solution, except of course we want to tell ourselves that
we can correctly tell the future.

I don't care how the Nation "Nigeria" came to be, what I know
is that it was Heavenly setup and if God is not ready to divide
what He had put together, I'd been waiting to see who else can.

*Just my personal opinion though*

Re: Division Of Nigeria (for Or Against?) : Vote Now! by Ellyptical: 3:15pm On Jan 20, 2010
@ Sun of God,
I understand the fear of inherent in the other parts of Nigeria, when it comes to Igbos. They are just too successful and progressive for your understanding.
One mistake you must never make is concluding that Igbos are invasive and possesive. That is not our stye and has never been. The hausas are the ones known to be very possesive and invasive. If you doubt it, ask the Jos natives (the beroms and the langtangs) who are currently struggling with hausa nomads over the ownership of jos - their motherland.
The Biafra will not one day wake up and invade and overrun anyone. We are christians and will never do that.

Like I said on another post, i seroiusly feel sory for the christians in the middle belt. The hausas will have no opposition in the senate of Arewa while passing Sharia as a national law. After that, jihads and mass killings will become the order of the day in Benue and Plateau states which are predominantly christian.
By the time Gowon (who is from Plateau and is a christian) is seeing his home being burnt down like they are doing now in Jos, he will be helpless since there will be no christian majority in the south to scream blue murder.
I see Ojukwu asking him, 'Gowon, should we come rescue from those you fought for is 1967? . . . Ha ha! Well . . Live with the consequences of your actions.'

Igbos are peaceful. We did not start the war. We only declared a republic to defend ourselves and Nigeria declared war and launched an offensive against us.
Obrigado.

Ellyptical,

You have given me something to think about.

My apologies, But it seems we (Igbo's) are owed big time for what 'Nigeria' has put us through. And my initial response was with this thought at the forefront of my mind.

We CAN go it alone!

I have noticed on countless occasions that the average Yoruba man is always afraid of taking decisive action. They exhibit this lilly-livered behavior and always chicken out in the last minute when courage is most needed.
Here we are with someone asking if we are going to be happier apart. Even if we will not be happier apart, is it not worth the lives that will be saved by the division? If Biafra had been formed in 1966 would the countless lives that were lost in the 62 different religious clashes that have happened between 2000 and date?
http://www.modernghana.com/news2/260135/1/62-cases-of-mass-islamic-terrorism-unleashed-on-ni.html

Mr Man,
Live is the important thing. If the division will put an end to the loss of lives, please go for it. Learn to priorities issues. I am still amazed that if this were to be a house (let's say senate or reps) someone will argue against division on the grounds that 'we cannot tell if we will be happier apart'. Even if we cannot tell, for 49 years we have been together and unhappy. Why not try something different?
A popular saying has it that madness is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result . . . food for thought.

May be the likely scenario. However the territory of Biafra may even extend up to the north! I know there are many northerners (the Christians) who would like to join. I also know that those northerners are prepared to fight for what they believe in. I don't see them continuing with the Islamic north. This is just a compassionate suggestion. Of course Biafra will only include people who join willingly, and are willing to adopt its ethos. It can even end up only in Igboland. We march forward nevertheless.
And my vote is a resounding YES!

Don't compare us to the us. When they fought their was it wasn't because of a system that gives undue favours to a certain region while the others are slaves more over they came together in agreement on certain terms. We've had various national conferences but of course megidas gainin from the system will always make us slaves. Wake up. We shouldn't be practising trial by error because we have a lot of nations to study empirically and learn from their mistakes. If i have a friend who made so many mistakes in life before getting his ground would you consider me wise in making the same mistakes instead of learning.

Marvix,
You made a point. The American civil war was fought at a time when the nation was almost 100 years old. However, you fail to see the big picture. What was the cause of the Biafran war and what was the cause of the Amercan civil war?
You cannot use apple tree as a yardstick for analysing how oranges grow and expect to make a good analysis. The american civil war was a selfless war. The south did not want slave trade to be abolished and decided to opt out of the nation so that they could continue with slave trade. Abraham Lincoln stepped in and that was the war. Four years after the war, the defeated south was reintegrated fully into government.
In the case of Biafra, some people up-north felt that some 'infidels' deserve to die. Over 10,000 Igbos were killed in cold blood even before the war. How then can you compare the two?
Again, there was the American civil war and that was it. In the case of Nigeria, the very thing that caused the war (jihad and uprisings in the north) is still plaguing us till today even as I type (Jos). It has refused to end and there is no sign that it will end in the near future.
There are HUGE ideological, social, religious and cultural differences between the north and the south in Nigeria and such gulfs hardly exist in advanced/advancing nations. We are talking of country where the people in the south were calling the US after 9/11 to find out if their loved ones were affected and the people up north were carrying pictures of Osama and jubilating.
We are talking of a country that the people up-north finish prayers in the mosque and scream 'Allah Hakubar' and start slicing people's throats.
We are talking of people who cut open a pregnant womans stomach, bring out her foetus and crush it with their feet during they Kaduna crisis.
We are talking of people who cut of Gideon Akaluka's head, placed it on a pole and were running around the streets jubilating.
Mr Man,
Can't you see the huge ideological difference? Is there any sign that it will get better? Does it look to you like there will be a time the north will opt to stop sharia law and respect the fact that we are a secular nation?
Does it not look to you like the decision of Abacha to register Nigeria in the Organisation of Islamic Conference is plot to Islamise Nigeria?
Nigeria's case is peculiar and the earlier you accept that, the better.
It has never been in record that a nation was plagued with Islamic Extremist uprisings and later overcame them. No! It never ends, it only gets worse.
Please stop comparing apples with oranges. You will make erroneous conclusions.
Nigeria is not one. Accept that simple truth . . .
. . . . Oh! Sorry . .maybe you have not lost someone in the north before. I pray you do not wait for that to happen before you see the big picture.

Obrigado.

Well . .In the case of a referendum, it's the secessionist that votes, not the rest of the country. I am trying to draw a random sample with this. The page has not got enough publicity. This is evident in the number of views and replies. I need to see the input of the ND people.
