Kidnapping in Ekiti politically-motivated -Oni

Ekiti State Governor, Engr Segun Oni has blamed the spate of kidnappings in the state on bitter politics.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Segun Oni

Oni said this while reacting to the kidnap and consequent death of the Atta of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Adeleye Orisagbemi, on Friday.

Acting Provost of the Ekiti State-owned College of Education, Dr. Gabriel Olowoyo and other citizens also lost their lives in the episode.

The governor assured that his administration would spare no efforts at bringing to justice criminal elements in the state.

Oni, who spoke during an emergency meeting of the state Council of Traditional Rulers, said there were strong indications that the spate of kidnappings in the state were politically motivated in view of earlier threats by a section of the opposition that they will make the state ungovernable.

He explained that the circumstances leading to the kidnapping of the Attah was extremely suspicious considering that the Oba had in a petition dated December 23, 2009 alleged that some individuals who are known associates of a certain politician were threatening to kidnap him.

Oni said that the fact that the criminal gang had been targeting officials of the State Government also lend credence to claims that activities of the criminal gang were politically motivated

He said, "How can some people out of lust for power unleash gangsters and terrorists on their motherland?

"Eyewitness accounts indicate that the Late Acting Provost was kidnapped because he was mistaken for a Commissioner in the state by the kidnappers. We were informed that he was brutalised by the criminals when he maintained that he was a lecturer.

"The leader of the gang who has been apprehended by the police is reported to have confessed that he was being sponsored by some politicians in the State. He was also reported to have confessed that negotiations between him and some politicians broke down when he was contracted to assassinate Senator Ayo Arise.

"We are also reliably informed that the leader of the gang who had been involved in armed robbery, kidnapping and killing of policemen and other innocent citizens of the State was a former local Government staff . We want to know who employed him and under what circumstances he left the Local Government service," Oni said.

He disclosed that the criminals recently made a failed attempt to kidnap the State Chief Judge in his chambers within the State High Court premises.

Oni also warned that his administration would take drastic action against any one claiming to be the regent of Ayede apart from the direct descendant of the late Oba Orisagbemi.

"We should respect our tradition. It is true that there was a suit against the Late Attah at the Supreme Court but he was never removed by any Court of competent jurisdiction.

"That is why we recognised him as traditional ruler of the town. So, for any one who is not a direct descendant of Oba Orisagbemi to lay claim to the regency of the town is an affront against the tradition of Ekitiland and would not be tolerated by the state government," the governor said.

Oni said it was unfortunate that some people were already laying claim to the regency of Aiyede even when the late Attah was still being mourned.

While commiserating with the traditional rulers on the demise of the late Oba Orisagbemi, Oni urged the monarchs to support efforts of his administration to strengthen security in the state by ensuring that no criminal element take shelter in their domain.

Governor Oni is one of the greatest fraud in South-West.He presently occupies the government House on a stolen mandate and will soon be removed by the election tribunal.
AS the Chief Security Officer of the state,he should be responsible for the lives of every citizen.
The spate of kidnapping in the state shows that the man is not capable.
