Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, 81, has handed presidential powers temporarily to his prime minister while he undergoes surgery on his gall bladder, state television reported.

Prime Minister Ahmad Nazif would run the country until Mr Mubarak returned.

It said the surgery would take place on Saturday morning.

Mr Mubarak, who on Thursday gave a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, had also temporarily delegated power to Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif in 2004 when he had back surgery.

Mr Mubarak has ruled the North African country since October 1981.
