Ibori Petitions Agf Over Alleged Efcc Manhunt by evil666(m): 1:20am On Apr 13, 2010
FORMER Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, has petitioned the Attorney General of the Federation over reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun a manhunt for him in connection with a petition on his transaction in the Ascot-Wilbros matter, which took place while he was in office.
Despite the fact that the Delta State Government had cleared him, a report by Saturday Punch indicated that that the anti-graft agency has re-opened investigation into the matter and wants the former governor to appear to make a fresh statement.
In a letter by his lawyers J.B. Daudu and Co. to the EFCC, copied the AGF, Ibori reminded the body of series of efforts to investigate him on various allegations, all of which had come to nothing and wondered what would have necessitated another effort.
“It is a matter of public record and judicial decisions that you have on behalf of the Attorney General vigorously investigated every aspect of our client’s tenure as governor of Delta State and failed to find any crime committed inclusive of allegations of conspiracy, official corruption, diversion and misappropriation of public funds, stealing and money laundering for the period of 29th May 1999 to 29th May, 2007.
“That the said investigation was predicated upon the instruction of the first respondent and the petition of various persons, including, but not limited to a group christened “Concerned Elders and Citizens of Delta State.”

The said investigation covered among other issues the purchase of Wilbros by Ascot and the role of the applicant in respect thereof.”
The petitioner also reminded the anti-graft body that the matter had been dismissed in court, for which the Commission, dissatisfied had gone on appeal in Benin, wondering why it would not subject itself to a process it had begun and allow it to run its full judicial course.
In very simple term, elementary terms, Ibori’s lawyer said, “What your organization is doing by seeking to reinvestigate a matter you have already investigated and charged to court and for which the alleged offender has been discharged (which in this instance amounts to acquittal) amounts not only to complete infraction of the Nigerian Constitution but is a breach of our client’s fundamental human rights.

“Nowhere in the world, except of course, in some notorious banana republics is the rule of law and constitutionality trampled upon so aggressively as you are doing in this instance.”
Arguing that the commission should have done a thorough investigation on the matter before going to court to avoid running foul of the principle of double jeopardy, they regretted a situation where it had begun criminalising the former governor on the pages of newspapers without any formal invitation to clear his name.
The letter, signed by J.B. Dauda (SAN), threatened to head to court to seek judicial redress should any attempt be made by the EFCC “merely because you control the coercive forces” to interfere with Ibori’s liberty.
Daily Independent had reported of an alleged concerted pressure from both Ibori’s traducers in his state, championed by Chief Edwin Clark and the Presidency with the full knowledge of Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan on the EFCC to cage the former governor ahead of 2011 elections.

Ibori is more than a criminal, a treacherouus animal, who represents nothing but a disgrace to politics democracy and power. he abused his office as a gov, absconded with the state wealth. So he has every right to be scared of AGF EFCC and co because he also knows his time is up. grin grin grin

EFCC let me ask you one question. Is UMY entitled to all the Medical expenses he used while away to saudi Arabia,if not why not bring him to justice for embezzlement of public fund, abi that fund is not public?who is free of embezzlement in this country

In political settings where public officials are held accountable for their actions, somebody with Mr. Babangida’s history of numerous manifest crimes against Nigeria and Nigerians would have long been sentenced to a stiff jail term and permanently barred from participation in his country’s public affairs. Babangida’s ambition to maneuver himself once more into power is arrogant, condescending and downright insensitive to the feelings of Nigerians whose affairs he ruined during his term as military dictator.

It is certain that the outcome of Babangida’s inordinate presidential run will depend on Nigerians’ collective resistance or acquiescence. Enlightened Nigerians cannot afford inaction or consent by default in the face of the avoidable train wreck that is a Babangida presidency.

There is no question that, in the coming weeks and months, unscrupulous Nigerian politicians, hired hagiographers and commentators, will come out in droves to champion Babangida and to try to rewrite his tragic history. Many of these would-be praise singers have a record for contributing to the ruination of Nigeria through their own corrupt practices.

We are confident, however, that Babangida will be stopped by the strong will of the vast majority of decent, conscientious Nigerians. These forward-looking citizens have every reason to stoutly defend the right of Nigeria to move away from her sordid past embodied and represented by the likes of Babangida. They have the energy, passion and vision to ensure the transformation of Nigeria into a 21st century nation that is able to serve the legitimate aspirations of her citizenry and to command the respect of other nations.

Nigeria should move forward, not backward. The country abounds with talent, at home and abroad, able to arrest her stagnation and turn her into an enviable, even model, polity. The Babangidas in our midst only know how to take Nigeria further away from the path of meaningful development and significant progress.

To reward Babangida with Nigeria’s highest political office despite his atrocities would indeed establish a terrible precedence and encourage political leaders in the continued destruction of Nigeria. Surely, this is not the kind of signal Nigerians want to send.

The Nigeria Democratic Liberty Forum (NDLF) is aware of the ill-advised encouragement that some foreign governments have provided Babangida. We condemn in the strongest terms this attempt by foreign powers to foist a certified disaster on the Nigerian people, a move bound to perpetuate and deepen Nigeria’s crisis of development and stultified democracy.

In order to register the outrage and resistance of Nigerians, NDLF will forward a petition letter; http://petition.ndlf-ng.org with signatures of Nigerians to the US government as well as other governments in Europe that may be goading Babangida to steal power.

This petition should serve as the cry of millions of Nigerians who say NO TO IBB and to the foreign governments around the world that may be sponsoring him. This signature petition drive is one of numerous activities NDLF intends to embark upon to STOP IBB and his likes from continuing to hold Nigeria hostage.

We also encourage individuals in their own ways to mount a campaign against Babangida in an effort to take our country back. We enjoin Nigeria’s labor unions, civil organizations, professional bodies, artisans, religious groups, and ethnic group associations to rise in rejection of a Babangida presidency. IBB poses such a serious threat to the interests of Nigerians that we should forge a mass movement to demand that Nigeria must move forward and say NO TO IBB.

If you believe that Nigeria should not be sacrificed to Babangida’s unpatriotic and nefarious whims and egotistical ambitions, please sign the petition; http://petition.ndlf-ng.org. We also urge you to forward it to ALL the Nigerian contacts in your email box – and persuade them to sign.

You can also print copies of the petition and hand it to Nigerians in the streets, churches, mosques, and homes. Explain to them that the stakes are high – and they need to make their voices heard. Signed copies of the petition should be emailed to petition@ndlf-ng.org. Please avoid apathy and indifference. Be involved in this struggle to free our beloved country.

Go to http://petition.ndlf-ng.org and make your voice heard. FREE NIGERIA: SAY NO TO IBB

I know for sure, if this is the kind of Politics Jonathan wants to play, then, he has planned to fail. This will just make people turn away their supports for him. Americans are the worst kind of friends for anyone to keep. If Yar'adua returns today, they will still celebrate him. Using government tools to hunt your detractors, will only make the masses to have pity on them, and then make you unpopular.

Jonathan is towing a dangerous path here. Let him concentrate on good governance, else he will fail.
Take for example, if Ibori decides to sponsor another Niger Delta crisis, who will suffer? He knows so well, he cannot send the military against his own people, so what happens? This is a very dangerous game to play.

Please note, I hate corruption and hate everything all about it. Let everyone be held accountable for their actions.

So how exactly, sir, do you recommend we deal with people who believe their sole reason of existence is to loot Nigeria dry?. . and how exactly does one concentrate on good governance without focusing on transparency?

Sir, i'd advise you stop speaking for the masses in this case, no one will have pity on him if he is found guilty {am sure as hell he's guilty}. and instead, folks will sing Jonathan's praises like Happy birds, his record will go down in history as one of the people who refused to celebrate corrupt officials.

And saying he'd be unpopular? sir, you lied!!!

Ribadu is still popular, and even though hunted in the past, still has the backing and approval of a larger percentage of 150 million people

My brother. . . . .I really don't know how to reply all these people. That Ibori stole is no news. What is new is that his own ''stealing style'' is way out of the imagination of many - many people who know how to steal. To them, he stole so much, he's broken the record for stealing and should be made to pay.

Your observation about Warri and Delta State during the time of Ibori as governor caught my attention.  Without mincing words, the man performed wonders in Delta State when he was governor. I have stated here on this forum some two years back that Ibori practically brought peace to Warri when he was governor. Warri was heading for total destruction. He came and saved the day. Airport road, Warri, that I thought can never be dualised was dualised by this guy. Warri, Ughelli, Asaba, Sapele, Ogara, Amukpe, Agbor, Ubulukwu, Igbuzo, etc all felt the presence of a governor when Ibori was at the helm of affairs.

At some time, because of the gigantic bridge constructed by him at Bomadi to link the Ijaw hinterland with their kins at the waterside, even as far as some villages in Bayelsa, Ibori was awarded the title of Deputy Governor General of the Ijaw Nation! It was Ibori who made it possible that the two strategic but neglected Federal road dualisation projects: Benin - Warri and Benin -  Asaba was completed during his tenure. I gathered he contributed funds(from Delta State purse) to finance these projects, at a time when OBJ was busy using state money to build hiltop mansion at Ibara, Abeokuta. Today, the only properly constructed road linking two Niger Delta states remains the Benin-Warri dual carriage way. Go figure. I make Benin in just 35 minutes from Warri. I remember hitting 150km/h speed on that road - with ease and no fear of accidents!

You know, some folks come here to tell us how much Ibori got as governor of the state - for eight golden years. They said he should have transformed Delta to another Houston, Dallas etc with what he had at the time. Well, I tell them, I'm satisfied with what I have in Delta now.

Now to Goodluck J: All I have to tell him is that he should not come home to the Niger Delta if he's not able to dualise the East-West Road from Warri to James Town in Akwaibom State at the end of his tenure. He should stay with Peter Odili in Abuja. No excuse for non performance will be entertained.

People, print media and all can say whatever they like. Ibori is my man anyday.
