Following criticism of the federal government's plan to spend N16.4 billion on the celebrations of Nigeria's golden independent jubilee, President Goodluck Jonathan has slashed the anniversary budget to N9.5 billion.

The adjustments are included in the latest amended supplementary budget which the president presented to the national assembly for consideration and passage.

In a letter to the national assembly conveying his intentions, the president said listed the areas which the cuts affected and said it was a "slight amendment."
Contrary to widely circulated reports that the president, earlier, presented a budget of N10 billion for approval by the National Assembly for its Nigeria at 50 celebrations, the figures from the former supplementary budget shows that the actual figure that was budgeted for the event was N16.37 billion.

up johnny!!!  we are now back to where we started - 10 billion  cheesy cheesy cheesy

ROFLMAO!!! How in the world is he listening to the people in this? We wailed for a month that 10 billion is too much and we are getting a .5 billion cut. ROFLMAO!!

Why do I get the feeling we are getting the same runs Yar adua gave us? I mean Yar adua made the same claims when he SUPPOSEDLY changed his tactics on some issues as well. Ekiti debacle resulted from Yar adua LISTENING to us too. PRETEND banning of District 9, Suing of BA . . . we are on . . . lol

this celebration money should have been channelled towards infrastructures, that could have been commissioned on the 50th independence celebration, whats the point of spending so much when it wont matter to the common man.

I think 1billion is well enough to celebrate all that needs to be celebrated, the remaining 8.5billion could have been used to refurbish Federal schools, Hospitals and even organise celebration rallies in each state.

i tire!

lets say we have 30 foreign missions thats 20Million each, however if 10 people from each mission comes to abuja should cost maybe 2million - 5million per mission (transportation plus expenses)

this is clearly a waste of limited funds!

I guess they are not thinking what happens after the celebration, back to square one!

It's high time Nigerians start asking question on what their commonwealth is beign used for. The political class gambles with our temperaments/intelligence, if they get away with one deceit and nobody talks, they go ahead to plan a graver one. but if people will protest they'll be forced to think otherwise.
Imagine if all Nigerians can come together and observe "ONE NIGHT OF DARKNESS" by lighting candles and lantern only at the eagle square protesting the epileptic power situation in the country, the international community will hear it and the political class will feel uneasy.

Does GEJ have a backbone at all? He balks at every sign of resistance to his decisions - First, it was to FIFA, now, to save face with Nigerians.

While saving some money is good, how can he stand up to the polical hawks? They will probably use a well-oiled backdoor to siphon the N6.9Bn shortfall! Same difference!

E be like say Mr President no get liver jor!

Why not use this money to construct 2nd niger bridge and name it "golden bridge" or anything synonymous with 50th anniversary celebration, that will leave a golden legacy for jonathan. As for me this is simply a jamboree. Another avenue for corrupt politicians to enrich themselves.

By rough estimate, i guess the Nigeian population is about 100million. Just give each Nigeian 1million each and you incompetent leaders can jeun lo with the remaining billions and we can all have a wonderful celebration together.

Not that, the man is man of wisdom, but before you could know it, he will crap what he want. If he did not do that to FIFA, we Nigeria may though the he did not have anyright in Sport or something like that.

If they live this man to rule Nigeria, i believe that Naija go better small.

This is my first time of seeing a breakdown of any proposed government expenditure. We should be happy that someone is now willing to give us reasons to ask questions.

Nigerians should push for the passage of the Freedom of Information bill. That is the only way we can criticise and/ or understand government's actions.

BTW, I don't think spending 10 billion dollars (abt US $65m) is too much to celebrate a nation's 50 years anniversary. My opinion.

Goodluck Jonathan's cuts to the N 16.4 Billion Naira is not impressive. I don't see why we should be celebrating. I believe we all need to put on sack cloth wherever we are on this planet and mourn. We need to wail and gnash our teeth and repent deeply in our hearts as individuals and as a nation. I believe President Jonathan should have organized a live press conference with Nigerians which will be broadcast on Radio, Television and on the Internet. Our President will then give his Independence speech and take questions from Nigerians all over the World. He could use the opportunity to present his plans for the country to us and also address the energy crisis bedevilling Nigeria. The N16.4 Billion Naira is just too much. The money could be used to renovate selected Secondary or Primary schools all over the country. It is not yet time for celebrations. There is a lot of work to be done and after we've accomplished some things, we can then celebrate. It is not as if our Independence Anniversary should be dry and uninspiring, but the proposed cash should be reduced drastically. Cheers.
