Results (exam, that is), is almost always PLURAL.

I wouldn't say INCORRECT. But, I prefer the first one.

Why?

Odemwengie is a striker. Fact. He plays International football for a certain country (Nigeria, here). You also have to understand the significance of 'the' in the phrase.

The statement does not relate to his nationality (Nigerian). It only explains, further, the proper noun 'Odemwengie'.

It is about the 'country' not 'nationality'.

Let's use 'England'/'English' to analyse this.

Rooney, the England striker, . . . . . . . ,

Rooney, the English striker, . . . . . . . . ,

You'd agree that the second statement seems to refer to (qualify) Rooney's race (nationality) and not 'country' (the one he plays for).

The idea here is not to qualify him in 'that' sense with the use of an adjective (Nigerian) but to explain 'Rooney' further in terms of football (international football, that is).

I'm not saying it is not allowed, though.
