Each time I criticize Jega on this forum, people call me several names.

If I was Jega, here are the things I would do, to build a legacy for this institution called INEC.

Successive INEC chairmen have started by asking for funding for compile a 'credible' voters register. How come what was credible in 1998 lacks credibility in 2010?

I think the answer is in lack of consistency and duplication of functions in government which should be seem as one body.

The National Population Commission (NPC), registered Nigerians in 2003. This registration was for Nigerians 18+. This registration lead to the production of national identity cards. During the registration, Direct Data Capture Machines (DDCMs) were used and vital data including fingerprints were taken.

If I were Jega, here is what I would do:

1.Work with NPC and ensure that National ID cards should be used as voters' card in 2011 and forthwith. (This will save the cost of successive 'credible' voters' registrations.)

2.Publish names of all Nigerians that were issued national ID cards. The names will be published online as well as in the LGA of the ID card holders

3.Work with NPC to ensure Nigerians that were issued National ID cards but have misplaced or damaged them, put down their names at their respective LGAs, with sworn affidavits

4.Ensure eligible Nigerians (18+) that do not currently have a national ID, are registered afresh, using the DDCMs that NPC used in 2003 (Saving the cost of fresh re-registering and purchase of the machines)

5.Harmonize the 2003 data with the fresh one and flag off names of those with multiple registrations, for possible prosecution.

This will save Nigeria billions of taxpayers naira as well as build a platform for conduct of subsequent elections as the national ID (which I have never had to use since I obtained it) can be used for elections.

Is it that no one is thinking up there or its another avenue to loot in the name of compiling a 'credible' voters' register? sad

I welcome N'Landers to fault my logic

It beats me. With over 100,000 people in government, either as politicians or as civil servants, I can't help but wonder why they are not thinking
