you guys still going at it ? If he decides to spend the money on Nollywood, except if it was in clear terms that the money is for movie producing, then $200 million can go a long way in the Nollywood's infrastructure if you ask me. If govt bailed out banks, why should govt bail out the movie industry ?

You might a point. It is definitely an alternative approach but the piracy is one of the few employment areas for the tons of unemployed youths in Nigeria.

Blocking them from making a living might lead to other problems if no alternative is available. Re: Idle fingers.

Your argument is now going circular. According to you, blocking piracy might lead to other problems because the infringers are umemployed youths who will have no alternative. But the essence of blocking the piracy is to make sure that the industry is growing so as to create legitimate jobs, whose benefits will outweigh any interest in allowing pirates to continue to operate with impunity.

Without law and order and respect for the intellectual property rights, the growth of the industry will be stifled, which will not help to create jobs. I disagree with you on that point.

As I said, you have a point.

The reality is that any copyright protection enforcement would most likely cost Nigeria loads considering our development stage and will lead to very few making money.

Not only Nigerian films will benefit but also Hollywood movies, those will just milk Nigerians.

Furthermore, even more advanced countries are losing out on the piracy wars as I can watch anything online.

The way government can counter that expense is to increase taxes on the industry, that will still not stop online piracy.

Although a slightly increased effort might be appreciated, I don't think the Naija govt is capable.

So, mate, it is not a circular argument.

What is GEJ doing at the Silver Bird 30th anniversary watching some bunch of american black chics winning their waist while he's not gone to Benue state to access the damages caused by the recent volcanic eruption? What does these kind of action portrays

If he was Yoruba would you ask? Just a question,

Even the foreign affairs minister is there with him, instead of putting pressure on the the Iranian embassy to produce the deadly weapon dealer that is hiding in their embassy. What a government?

I am not sure why you called your grandfather d.umb- ofcourse, you alone will know that. May be you should practice putting your argurment accross instead of resulting to baseless insults and useless rhetorics. Afteral, you start complaing of leadership when you cannot string two sentences without insulting other people. I wonder what company will appreciates such communications skills.

Like I said maybe some people should step out NL and do a little research on issues before making ignoramus comments. I don't understand why many Nigerians' first instinct, when confronted with sound and probably superior ideas, is to get confrontational.

This topic would have been a good chance for people with good understanding of the issues of nollywood to discuss the issues why others can just may be read and learn something. Like the typical Nigerian system, if we can get our way we destroy everything. God help us if this the generation we hope to rely on in the future.

ASSWIPE!!!!!!!!

Now . . . .Unlike the ridiculous comment you made about British History, you managed to twist my words, but I will still address the questions. To show you how daft you simply are for even thinking you can score cheap points.

1. Dividing the pie six ways: You insist on saying ''dividing six ways''. I suggested this might be one of the ways the dictum of Federal character could play out. But the primary point was, a bureaucracy, whether committee or even a full fledged public body will need to be created to distribute the funds . And it could also play out that each region would create a film body which is a multiplication of bureaucracies. And what do bureaucracies do best. They meddle. They try to justify their existence and in so doing do more harm than good.

2. On Channel Four. Unlike the BBC, funding for Channel Four comes from both Advertising and the Public Purse. Which puts it in a bit of a dilemma. The fact it has to take money from the public purse means it is subject to public scrutiny about its output. So part of its budget must go to programmes that it knows will not make money. Channel 4's biggest franchise the past decade was BIG BROTHER and its Celebrity spin off. Solid, profit making fodder. Because of a racism row, the channel was criticised by Ofcom and the Culture Minister, disregarding the profits the company made from it. The Minister went on to say,

"Channel 4 has always been at its strongest when it has closely adhered to its public purpose: innovative, educational, distinctive, and appealing to diverse audiences,"

This is what a broadcaster with even the tiniest bit of connection to the public purse has to cope with. Now imagine if it was our
greedy and I TOO KNOW politicians.

3. And there was no conjecture about GEJ providing funds for films that would lose money. The provision of these funds would most likely be made without regard for whether there is going to be a profit or not. Primarily because there is no incentive to. Nepotism, tribalism and plain old corruption would most likely be the critical factors in determining where the money goes to, and not hardknuckle cost benefit analysis. ITS THE WAY BUSINESS HAS BEEN DONE. DON'T KNOW WHY YOU THINK IT WILL BE ANY DIFFERENT NOW.

I do know actually. . .You are dumb.

4. Now on PHCN. You were probably too busy recollecting all the many times your Father called you a slowpoke that you did not consider what I wrote.

My introduction of PHCN had to do with your naivete over extra funds not helping a venture. All I did was show you a venture where extra money has simply sucked in more and more money. More money poured into an institution does not equate to improvement. THAT IS ALL.

I don't know what your point is about civil servants running PHCN. Or do you mean non - civil servants will administer these funds. Or GEJ will simply hand it from his bedroom to each nollywood producer that catches his fancy?

I will echo your father again. . . .slowpoke. grin grin grin

5. Now, on the textile industry and the INTERVENTION FUND to help revive it. The fact it is a dead industry is irrelevant. The point is, the funds are trying to serve thesame purpose. Help an industry that is thought to be ailing.

I don't know where you got this idea of a BUOYANT industry. If it was buoyant, why would government decide to intervene at all.

While cinema audiences were climbing in the UK in the early 1990s, few British films were enjoying significant commercial success, even in the home market."

Now. . .back to the issue at hand.

On buoyancy of Nollywood. The following will do

Hard times hit Nollywood

These are not the best of times for stakeholders in the Nigerian home video and film industry. Everybody, from the producers and marketers to actors and actresses, seems to be affected by a glaring dip in the fortunes of the industry.

An indication that the hard times had crept in came when marketers began to grumble aloud about sharp drops in the sales of home video films. Many reasons were advanced for this. Some people believed that it came as a result of diminished interest in most of the films that were released in the market. They said that most of the films had become boring and monotonous and consumers no longer found it necessary to buy them. Others attributed it to the proliferation of films recorded on inferior CDs in the market.

Sources informed http://nigeriafilms.com that the movie marketers reacted by slashing the fees earned by actors and actresses so much that it forced some of them who couldn‘t endure the humiliation to stay off the screen.

The situation has become so bad, they say, that even notable actors and actresses, such as Ini Edo and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, whose faces used to be seen by viewers regularly on the screen, no longer enjoy hundred per cent patronage from filmmakers.

Apart from that, it appears that the marketers and producers alike are now less inclined to hiring some of these popular artistes, whom they have labeled ‘overused‘. ”They are simply tired of featuring these artistes. What they are doing now is looking for new and younger people that they won‘t have to pay a lot of money to appear in their films,” a source disclosed.

Now. . .Pertaining to this quote you posted here.

You did not see the beginnng line in the link (1990s) that said: "With Eady gone many studios closed or focused on television work, film production in the UK hit one of its all-time lows in 1989. While cinema audiences were climbing in the UK in the early 1990s, few British films were enjoying significant commercial success, even in the home market."

Remember your contribution was that Public intervention helped to buoy the industry after it fell into hard times in 1989.

And remember you also said FILM4 was an arm of CHANNEL 4 a public institution. So Intervention by FILM4 can be inferred as Public Intervention.

And you also said Four Weddings and A Funeral was the first time people started watching British Films. A film that was produced by FILM4. Proof for you that public intervention helped the industry.

BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR ARGUMENT. FILM4 WAS SET UP IN 1982. WELL BEFORE THE CRASH OF THE FILM INDUSTRY IN 1989.

SO PUBLIC INTERVENTION DID NOT SAVE THE INDUSTRY FROM CRASHING IN 1989 IF WE ARE TO FOLLOW YOUR LINE OF THOUGHT.

And I will also add that the BBC has been involved in Film Production as far back as the 1950's when it bought Ealing Studios, the studio responsible for famous films like PASSPORT TO PIMLICO, THE LADYKILLERS etc.

So Public Intervention was there when the FILM INDUSTRY CRASHED IN 1989. IT COULD NOT STOP IT.

YOU FOLLOW. . . . . wink wink wink

Now. . .Pertaining to this quote you posted here.

You are retarded!!!

You are what? . . . . . You are retarded!!!

Say: Yes Sir!

Where did I say Four Wedding and a funeral is the first time people started watching UK films?

You want to use conjectures on me, slowpoke?

That is by the way.

Your retarded challenge was that you did not agree that British films where on a decline before the success of Four Weddings?

Now you want to change the argument and strawman me?

You are dumb!

Admit you are retarded for disputing a fact I gave you before I progress and hang you with the asinine gibberish you put up here. I am going to fking choke you with it, you asinine goat!

Now. . . .You said my analogy using the textile industry was not apt based on your contention that Nollywood was buoyant.

But I just gave you a link from an industry insider who clearly said ''NOLLYWOOD IS IN TROUBLE''.

So your objection is overruled. And we can thus use the TEXTILE INDUSTRY intervention as a template for predicting the performance
of this intervention right?
