Fashola Hands Over Four Major Projects, Affirms That There Is No Alternative To ACN

Feb 10, 2011 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday handed over four major projects, namely a Home and Clinic for the Physically Challenged Children in Owode Orile, a Mini Water Works with 2 million gallons capacity in Ikorodu and two Rural Electrification projects in Olorunshogo and Abule Ijede, affirming that there is no alternative to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) anymore.

Governor Fashola who addressed the people at each of the handing over ceremonies added that the Action Congress of Nigeria by its superiority of ideas and very clear evidence of its success through life changing policies have become the party to beat.

"If we work as a party, we are the only one that can defeat ourselves. The Peoples Democratic Party is deficit in ideas. The Action Congress of Nigeria offers you the better alternative. This is the time to change things in Nigeria. It is possible that Nigeria would be great again".

"The evidence of how they have treated their own candidates is there in the papers. Today, one list is submitted, tomorrow it is substituted and replaced by another one. They are playing yoyo with their Governors. They cannot keep simple agreement, even the agreement for zoning, they breached it in their own party. The ACN is the only party that keeps its promise", Governor Fashola said.

The Governor commended the people for heeding the call of the Government to participate in the voters registration exercise, reminding them that there is still a claims and objections exercise which will soon come up.

Governor Fashola emphasized that all those who participated in the registration must go back to the registration points during the claims and objections exercise to check their names, addresses and photographs to be sure that they have been captured correctly and also ensure that no foreigner or unknown faces gets onto the register.

He charged the people to guard against what took place before the restoration of the mandate in Ekiti where foreign names like Mike Tyson and non-existent names like Mr White and Mr Brown found their way into the Nigerian voters register.

While congratulating leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria for the mature way they have handled issues in the party, Governor Fashola urged all those who secured tickets of the party to be humble in their success by reaching out to those who aspired and did not get it.

He added: "Those who did not get the tickets, there is something bigger than the party to build. There is Lagos Satte to build and there is Nigeria to build".

Speaking at the handing over of the Home and Clinic for the Physically Challenged Children, Governor Fashola said there were hospitals for able bodied people whereas those with life challenging disabilities never had any, emphasizing that such will stop with the handing over of the clinic.

He added that the Clinic is the third type of such which Lagos has delivered, adding that there is a home constructed in Ipaja by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) to look after women who are victims of domestic violence and their children. He noted that another home for children with Downs Syndrome was commissioned in Surulere during one of his birthdays.

While assuring the people that the story of care for people with disabilities will not stop with this hospital project but must continue, he added that people with disabilities must not be limited in their capabilities because Government failed to act.

Governor Fashola explained that as part of conscious efforts to cater for the needs of all segments of the society new roads are being provided with sidewalks and ramps that will allow those with disabilities to move about conveniently without interacting in a conflicting manner with able bodied people.

The Governor told the gathering at the commissioning of the Mini Water Works in Ikorodu that the water works is the nineth of the 15 water works, each with a capacity for two million gallons of water daily completed and being handed over by the State Government across the State.

He reiterated that the State had undertaken a capacity upgrade of the Iju and Adiyan Waterworks that initially had a capacity of 115million gallons but delivered 40million gallons per day due to unstable power supply from the Federal Government.

The Governor also added that through its superiority of ideas, the present administration in Lagos has delivered a 12.5 MW Independent Power station that services Iju and Adiyan water works and has ensured that water moved from 40milliongallons to 105million gallons.

Said he: "But our journey is not completed. We need to build at least five more water works with 50million capacity and located in strategic places like Iju, Agege, Badagry, Odomola and Epe. The procurement plan has been completed".

"Water helps us to fulfill our commitment to the people through preventive healthcare by eliminating diseases and positioning the people to live a healthy life".

Governor Fashola told the gathering that the greening and beautification programme is part of the strategies to reduce the rate at which the people fall sick and go to hospitals.

Speaking at the handing over of the rural electrification projects at Olorunshogo and Abule Eko in Ijede, Ikorodu, the Governor said the State is bringing electricity to the people and has solved the problem of having to wait for imported transformers because a transformer manufacturing industry has been established in Lagos by the State Government in partnership with the Elsewedy Group of Cairo, Egypt.

He thanked members of the community for their understanding, saying for the past 12 years the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been promising Nigerians that it would provide electricity to no avail.

Earlier, in her welcome address at the Home and Clinic for the Physically Challenged Children in Owode Orile, the Commissioner for Women and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Joke Orelope-Adefulire said it is in order to save the lives of physically challenged children and their parents that the home which is the first phase has been established.

She added that the home will also provide relief to working mothers of disabled children as they go out to earn a living, adding that Government also recognizes that the disabled children have inbuilt abilities which only a conducive environment can nurture to reality.

Also speaking at the handing over of the two rural electrification projects in Ijede, the Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Lanre Balogun said the project will bring a new lease of life to the benefiting communities.

He said the completion and successful handing over of the projects represents a continuation of the commitment of the present administration to providing the dividends of democracy to the people.

Speaking while welcoming the guests at the handing over of the Mini Water Works, the General Manager of the State Water Corporation, Mrs Dele Fatusi said the Mini Water Works will boost the water supply capacity of the State thus keeping diseases at bay.

She expressed the appreciation of the Corporation to the State Government for believing in the capacity of the organization to turn around the water supply capacity of the State.

In a goodwill message at the handing over of the Home and Clinic for the Physically Challenged Children in Owode Orile, a representative of the UNICEF in Nigeria, Mrs Sarah Nyanse commended the State Governor for taking the issue of people with physical disabilities very serious.

She added that the establishment of the clinic would put smiles on the face of children with physical disabilities as well as their mothers and would restore their confidence that they are not disadvantaged by virtue of their conditions.

Also speaking, a representative of the founder of Down Syndrome, Mrs P.K Peters said it is a thing of joy that Lagos State is taking the lead role in providing care and affection to children who are disadvantaged by the nature of their births.

The Governor who was received enthusiastically by residents who trooped out to welcome him was accompanied on the trip to the various commissioning points by members of the State Executive Council, legislators representing the State at both the State and national levels, Candidates of the Action Congress of Nigeria in the forthcoming elections, Chieftains of the party and was received by traditional rulers and community leaders.
