Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday formally handed over 362 units of one bedroom, one bedroom room and living areas and two bedroom apartments at the Odoragunshi Housing Estate in Ikorodu.

This will form the first in the series of houses that will go into the pool of houses that will be available for the public.

Speaking at the ceremony which took place at the Odoragunshi Housing Estate, Epe, which was renamed as Michael Otedola Housing Estate, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) stressed that the new houses would be available by mortgage or what people prefer to call rent to own.
Governor Fashola also stated that the details of how the new housing policy will work will be unfolded in the next few weeks when the Lagos Home Ownership Scheme would be formally launched.
The Governor recalled that during the last elections, he repeatedly gave assurances that if the people support the Action Congress of Nigeria with their votes and empowers the administration to form the government, it would be in a position to implement its housing programme that was already at a very advanced stage.
“Let me also restate what I have had cause to say in the past, that the problem of housing was not that of building alone, it was also a problem of sustainability. The problem manifested itself in various forms, such as the congestion in our ports which compounds the cost of imported components of building materials.
“It also manifested in the rate of foreign exchange which adds to cost of building, the absence of long term mortgages and funding, exacerbated by high interest rates which compel our citizens to desperate situations in order to raise money to pay for houses in one single payment; the reluctance of investors to invest in housing because of the difficulty of repossession when tenants default,” he stressed.
He reiterated that immediately after the elections, the State House of Assembly endorsed the multi-pronged solutions proffered by the State Government by promptly passing the new housing law which eliminated many of the difficulties that the old law inflicted on landlords who wanted to recover their premises from defaulting tenants.
Governor Fashola added that the new law also introduced many other innovative policies for the benefit of landlords and tenants alike; just as the government is already getting reports of its favourable implementation by landlords, tenants and estate surveyors and agents alike.
While also shedding light on Housing Arbitration Rules of the Lagos House Ownership Mortgage Scheme and Official Website of the scheme which he launched on Monday, Governor Fashola said the two policies and programmes show the character of the government as one that is methodical and has a plan.

This is confusing! Ikorodu and Epe were mentioned simultaneously. which one are we to take as the location of the flats. What fashola owns Ikorodu people is good road. is it that Ikorodu is not part of Lagos? The only road leading to that town is impassable. Even the federal govt is not bothered about the road. Also, all adjacent roads within the town are terrible. for instance, Agric-owutu road, ori-okuta road, Agbede road just to mentioned but few.
Fashola, this time around, you need to do something urgently.

I know this estate. It's on the road to Ijebu-Ode from Epe, at the Otedola's home town of Odo-Ragunsin. It was completed over 3 years ago, and this "handing over" is just a political publicity stunt, typical of Fashola, to deflect the argument that he's not built any affordable housing.

Minimum cost of these houses is N7 million. How many people in Lagos can afford that? In fact, how many people in that area can afford that, since it's so far from Lagos that attempting to live there and work in Lagos will be a fool's errand?

Fashola is just an attention seeking incompetent thief, who is helping himself and his boss to the treasury of Lagos State.

Could somebody please help me ask him what he did with the N65 billion revenue Lagos State got in the month of July 2011

@djustice

How much did it cost the government to build the houses, how much for the land, if it is more than 7 million then the government has done well by subsidizing it. Your average mechanic that builds his own bungalow spends millions as well.

As I have said before else where, your stupidity is what will eventually kill you. The commissioner for Budget and Planning was quoted in Thisday as saying that the state made N262 billion IGR in the first half of this year, as against their IGR target of N450 billion. Why don't you get your two remaining brain cells working, and divide N262 billion by 6 months. That should, if your nearly-dead brains cells are still working, give you a figure of N45 billion per month. The Federal Ministry of Finance stated in information published in Thisday last week Monday, said they gave LASG N13 billion, and gave the Local Governments in Lagos State N9 billion, making a total of N22 billion Federal Allocation.

Please, I know it's hard, but try to make the effort to put those two remaining cells to use and add N22 b to N45b, and see if it does not exceed my conservative figure of N65 billion. Ignoramus.

Ignoramus of the highest order! When did Fashola become the one to account for the Local government funds you are adding to what Lagos state goverment collected as revenue?
Obviously you are so dumb you can not differentiate between Local goverment funds and state government funds.
What a colossal waste of scarce resources on your education by your parents.ve you a figure of N45 billion per month. grin grin grin grin cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy Honestly, you're quite a comedian, aren't you? Who doesn't know about a little something called a joint State and Local Government Account? Why will you come here pretending you don't know that the account in question is where both state and LG Federal Allocations are paid into, and is controlled by the state? You're either seriously stupid, or seriously uninformed, or both, which, quite frankly, is disastrous for someone with your already miniscule brain capacity.
