I have to add that Assumpta is the biggest landmark in Owerri. It was bombed several times during the war but it stood its grounds.

In terms of culture, a trip to Mbari cultural centre and amphi-theatre would enlighten you. There are several carvings and artworks including the legendary Giant Alakuku.

Hmm! I always thought that was a Benin legend (as Olukuku though). Interesting, do the artworks simply narrate the legend or is that part of the local culture?

It's an Owere and Mbaise legend, but you never know. I started living in Owerri at the age of six and we were taught in primary school as well. I will ask my mum tho. The sculpture is about 10ft and lying on the side and if you go to Mbari cultural centre, there are guides to explain all the artworks there, so I guess they must have some documentation as well.

Thank you, I wish there were some hills tho cos I am biased towards hilly areas. I have got my own hilltop land in Umuahia.

Nigeria is quite interesting minus the violence. I travelled the rail route from KD to PH several times as a kid and the natural views are spectacular especially between Kafanchan and a place known as Langalanga in Plateau state and you could travel for hours without seeing any sign of human life, but would see some animals in the wild. That stretch is extremely rocky with rolling hills and mountain range and is a sight to behold. A smart/peaceful country would develop tourist camps within that stretch.

^^^ Owerri is quite hilly though its hills are not as obvious as Enugu's, but certain areas are obviously elevated and the views to the rest of the city are quite breathtaking. I know this may sound like Taboo to some but Ohakim must be given tremendous credit for his effort in restoring Owerri and replacing Okada's with the kekes and BRT style buses, he left a legacy that any honest person should give him credit for.

Yeah iknow what you mean, but I like those sudden bumps that seem to come from the ground and force routes to divert or go around them.

indeed but the problem with Nigeria is the people in it not the land which is very sad all those lands with wild animals and rolling hills that country could have make as twice in tourism  as they are  currently making in crude oil but the inhabitants hate one another and fight kill there fellow countryman cos of land and power northern part of Nigeria have spill so many blood in their land both innocent and none innocent for so many yrs and is hunting them without them knowing what is happening in there land no peace, fact never had peace since 1999 till date that land need some serious prayer ask GOD for forgiveness, for god to allow peace to reign with peace you can develop with peace you can think with peace your land will be bless with many things Nigeria don't suppose to lack anything their is places to explore for tourism but you as a Nigerians cant move freely or even tour the whole country the way Americans goes on holiday withing U.S they don't need to leave US.but in Nigeria you cant do that we lack all the amenities talk less of foreigners visit it wont happen,

Thats really interesting! In the Benin legend, he had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, is it the same in Owere and Mbaise? If it is the same, there must be a link between the two peoples, maybe travelers or migrations. Who knows? Its definitely interesting though.

I don't know much about him, only that he was loved as he was gentle. I must have just nodded my head as a kid as we were being taught about him. It is interesting to note that a people in Abia state (Umunneochi) claim that Alakuku was from there. I tried to google him and stumbled upon that info but I haven't got the link here, I'm afraid.

Igboland  has improved tremendously from the bombings of the Biafran war. Kudos to our can-do spirit. So far, Enugu and Owerri are the ebeanos

However, we have neglected Ebonyi for so long. Can we get a thread going where pictures of Abakiliki and other Ebonyi towns/cities can be posted?

I have one running here but we need to populate it with photos https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=771556.msg9246710#msg9246710

@ beaf, the former governor Ohakim employed sweepers for the roads but Rochas on assuming office sacked them, maybe because it was rumoured that the private company handling the cleaning of owerri is owned by ohakim.

@ onlytruth, if you travel along owerri-portharcourt road you'll find towns like umuguma, avu, oforola, obosima, obinze etc these are all on the outskirts(10 km) of owerri and our land was taken(compensated) and planned long ago by previous governments, in some areas of avu where futo lecturers live you can get for about 400 grand, while closer to the express is about 1million, per plot.
You need to see the kind of houses being built in some of these areas i mentioned and you would be speechless!

President jonathan awarded a contract to expand the express leading to portharcourt so
There is a rush now so you better hurry!

Avu is the best place to buy land now due to its peaceful and accommodating nature, 50% of the people living in avu are non indigens, most of the corpers, policemen and soldiers who live there have refused to leave, i know some military men and civil servants who now claim imo as thier state of origin cause they've fallen in love with the place even Kanu Nwankwo did the same.

My people are not business inclined, mostly farmers and like merryment and alcohol.

And you need to see owerri ladies, you'll know that Muna is just a tip of the iceberg.@ beaf, the former governor Ohakim employed sweepers for the roads but Rochas on assuming office sacked them, maybe because it was rumoured that the private company handling the cleaning of owerri is owned by ohakim.

Omenala nnem.I bu nw'owerri.Nye si ala Owerri a ri ya nma kwara li.Ejeme je gba'a cha ekere were tala ugba nuo mmii.

As a true Owerri son you should understand the above. My advice is that you people should organize your land before selling it so that Owerri will not go the way of Aba and Onitsha. And again you guys should ban construction of buildings above 3 storey.
Re: What City And State Is This? by omenala(m): 6:32pm On Oct 03, 2011
@ Nda Abagoro, ee mena!

Yes We are trying not to make the same mistakes as the ikwerres, Aba and Onitsha people etc.

But now our youths are seriously pressuring the elders to release farmlands for sale. Some families in my village have sold almost all thier land, the question we are asking ourselves is if we sell all now when our children grow up where will they build?

As of now there are people from the main Owerri municipal who have to go to the outskirts to buy land cause thier fathers left non for them.

Another thing that i'm proud of in Owerri are the kind of houses and hostels being built, for as low as 40 grand you can get a self contain apartment/flat wit detachable silver shower head, tiled floor, designer iron doors, dstv connection, steady water supply, its just as though the landlords in Owerri are in silent competition with themselves, even phcn gives relatively steady power supply to most parts of Owerri than Lagos!

The previous environmental agency was very strict on matters on drainage, building a house without proper drainage attracts thier wrath. Its difficult to find a face me i face you kind house looking like the ones you find in Lagos.

I just hope Rochas will continue to develope the city. And stick to Sam Mbakwe's master plan.
Re: What City And State Is This? by Abagworo(m): 6:50pm On Oct 03, 2011
@omenala.I love the hospitable nature of Owerri people as opposed to Onitsha,Ngwa and Ikwerre to their guests. That way the indigene-settler dichotomy is non-existent and encourages any investors.Do not sell your farmlands indiscriminately in order not to motgage the future of your people.

@face.I must have to admit that the tallest and most built men I have met in my life are from Umunneochi in Abia State. This is much off the average physique of the regular Igbo and the tall lanky nature of the regular Fulani. It calls for research. The "Alakuku" legend must be true.
Re: What City And State Is This? by Obiagu1(m): 3:01am On Oct 04, 2011
Onlytruth:

Nna it looks like Onitsha: Omagba, Nkpor or Awada area; not sure.
I won't be shocked if it is still Ala Owerre.

Onitsha build mostly 5 storey buildings whereas Enugu is 3, sometimes 4.
Re: What City And State Is This? by remarkD(m): 3:59am On Oct 04, 2011
My mom is from Umunneochi and had stories of Giant Alakuku when they were kids. I agree with the notion that people from that part of Abia are tall, cause all my moms siblings are standing at least 6 feet or so, i've not heard any other state/village claiming he had his roots elsewhere than Umunneochi, heard dude was scary, kids see him and flee!

^Yes,ajo nwa.LOLZ

@Only truth,I got a plot @ New Owerri @ 750K 3 years ago.Its double the price now.I think Avu,world bank and Prefab(the one behind Akwakwuma girls) should still be relatively cheap.Big boys with ego Igwe took over Orji/Okigwe road(erecting mansions within a space of 6 months),I tried getting a plot there, almost concluded with the sellers tupu one boy bia jiri pounds crash-ia my weak naira and today a magnificient hotel sits there.

Nna, you are kinda right, Achingali is along Mbaise rd. I have a business there, they are Obowo ppl(mu mom is from obowo too) but claim Mbaise just the way an Njaba-umuaka man claims orlu.
