Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Shagati(m): 10:27pm On Oct 17, 2011
I visited a friend's friend a couple of weeks ago and I saw this vehicle lying in his compound doing absolutely nothing!
Siena's Audi A4 Project (that I thoroughly enjoyed following) immediately sprang to mind. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-471750.0.html
Now the questions are:
Can we replicate a Siena Project here in Lagos with the limited access to parts and expertise and come up with something crisp and sparkling just like the Master (I do not use this term lightly) did in the UK?
Can I suitably interest Mr Audi himself, SIENA to participate and support this project? (To be honest, I have contacted him privately and this post is to show that we are serious  wink)
Re: Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Shagati(m): 10:38pm On Oct 17, 2011
A brief history of the Car according to the owner.

It was bought brand new from the Audi Centre (Stallion Motors) in 2003
Mileage is about 90,000km (couldn't verify this)
Air suspension's gone (will post pictures in a few moments)
One of the Turbos is gone
Leatherwork could use some care
Bodywork requires minimal attention
Alloys slightly scuffed but not irredeemable
Interior is fair considering that the car has been parked and exposed to the elements for more than a few months

So where do we go from here?
Re: Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Shagati(m): 10:46pm On Oct 17, 2011
The owner has asked for a token-ish amount to let "a part of him go" (in his own words) and I am very willing to undertake the financial aspect of this project.
I am a bit "techy" (mostly in my mind though embarassed) so it is more than unlikely that I would be handling any of the physical mechanical work personally.

So with the proper support all round, I am sure we can make this a reality yes?

Pictures to follow shortly

Looking good bud. The fact it looks so dirty, and has obviously been neglected means your restoration is starting from a blank canvas. A good base car too!

Don't forget the turbos are different, left and right. You'll need a KKK-03. The air suspension, can be replaced with conventional spring and damper set-up from an A6 Avant Quattro.

Keep us posted, if you need any advice or tips, just holler. cool

I know you say she's got a dead turbo, but does she still run? A blown turbo could be defective in different ways:

01) Blown oil seal (smoking, more under load).
02) Damaged bearing (rattling / whistling).
03) Cracked housing (hotside, in wastegate area).
04) Broken shaft.
05) Damaged turbine vanes.
06) Shaft seized (due to oil starvation).
07) Wastegate broken (flap detached).

Now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks for a quick response grin
I remember you mentioned the KKK-04 as being more applicable from a durability point of view? Does this still stand?

Now there is no way to actually confirm any of the above unless we get the car started. I wont be able to comment on this till then.
I will be seeing the car again this weekend and will try to get the engine to turn over.
Chap says battery and petrol and the car will start.

Remains to be seen
Re: Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Nobody: 12:19am On Oct 18, 2011
The KKK-03 turbochargers were fitted to the following 2,7T engines:

01) Audi A6 2,7T (230 bhp).
02) Audi A6 Allroad 2,7T (250 bhp).
03) Audi S4 B5 2,7T (265 bhp).

The KKK-04 turbochargers was fitted to the following 2,7T engine:

01) Audi RS4 B5 2,7T (380 bhp).

Fitting the KKK-04 turbo to your Allroad will work, and be more reliable (the shaft is much thicker). You'll need to replace them as a pair though, as the boost capabilities are different. They will also support more power too.

Hmmm that will be nice
Will check some prices online now

You may pm me details
Many thanks

Hi Siena

What can you say about the Arnott's Gen II air-sprints + Bilstein shocks?
Or the standard replcement kit is the way to go? (Non-adjusting Springs?)

The Arnott kit is good, I've fitted a couple, with good results. The Arnott kit has a lifetime guarantee as well. Cheaper than OEM Audi components, but more expensive than used stock Audi A6 Quattro bits.
Re: Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Nobody: 3:23pm On Oct 18, 2011
A brand new KKK-03 turbocharger is £380. This includes surcharge, as I won't be getting your old unit back. If you're buying a pair (advisable as replacement involves engine removal) I can offer a discount.

The KKK-04 is a lot more expensive, but not worth buying to fit to a KKK-03-engine 2,7T in Nigeria. The ECU will need a remap, as the different trims in the KKK-04 units means the engine won't run right with a KKK-03 map.

Complete Audi A6 Avant Quattro suspension (springs and dampers) works out £520 brand new, or £275 used.

Nothing stops me from sending the old units to you. How much of a discount are we looking at for the pair if I do send the old ones to you??

Please advise the merits and otherwise of new vs. used here. Cost of the used is looking very delicious from where I'm sitting

Price for a pair with surcharge is £760.

Price for a pair if your old units are returned is £672.

Of course brand new units are the preferred choice, they haven't been subject to use. Used are still a good buy over here - the roads are not bad, so the units don't get over exerted. Couple with the fact a lot of enthusiasts remove their stock suspension, to upgrade to a Sport set-up (lowered springs and stiffer dampers)

A lot of Audi A6 are also SE models, which means they ride high. The optional Audi Sport package is lower, and stiffer. Owners tend to replace their SE-spec suspension with Sport-spec. Some used suspension have covered less than 6,000 miles (half a year's worth of motoring).

Hi Siena
Any thoughts for wheels?
Stock are 17" and I'm sure 18" would make for a nice replacement but I get twitchy when profiles (aspect ratio) get below 50 because of the kind of roads we have in these parts

What are your thoughts on this?
Please recommend some wheels (pictures/price et al) for wheel and tyre

Thanks
Re: Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Nobody: 6:41pm On Oct 19, 2011
There's more to aspect ratio.

An 8,5 x 18" wheel, with 245/45x18 tyre still has quite a chunky sidewall (profile). It's 45% of the total width (245mm). On the other hand, a 225/50x18 on the same wheel will physically have a lower profile, and be vulnerable to pot holes and sleeping policemen.

Are you ref to these?

Cost + shipping to Lagos?
I hope we haven't forgotten shipping cost + lead times with the other parts as well?

Re: Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Nobody: 10:27pm On Oct 19, 2011
Yep, those are the wheels. shipping will be in the region of £400. Or £200 if you share van space with a client of mine. I have a van to ship to Lagos.

All the tyres are in great shape. My A4 had the same wheel size, but with 255/35x18 tyres.

My Audi S8 Quattro - 8.5"x18" Avus alloys, with 245/45x18 rubber:

And a closer comparison to your Audi Allroad - my old A4 Quattro Avant, with 8.5"x18" Flat Five alloys, with 255/35x18 rubber:

Re: Project Restore: 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T - Definitely IS! by Shagati(m): 4:21pm On Oct 20, 2011
Yes Siena,
Two days to go. I picked up a battery this morning

Hi Tedanne (thanks for looking in smiley),
Patience please, the car is not even in my possesion yet! wink
I am looking at getting it to start this weekend and thereafter towing/hauling it to the repair site
If the car starts, that's a whole lot of headache out of the way and will determine the sequence events will follow. . .
Timing belt, filters, new oil, plugs etc

No worries, I will keep the house properly updated in all regards

Cheers
