Massive Whale Swept Ashore At Seme Border

By Laide Adekunle

A massive whale was swept ashore yesterday morning at Seme border. The whale, which was already dead, was swept into the Customs quarters at Seme by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Hundreds of people were seen this morning hacking at the fish, which was already smelling badly. But the stench did not deter the emergency butchers who all scrambled for a piece of the action.

As the crowd was becoming uncontrollable, the Customs officers chased everybody out of their quarters and later set the fish ablaze.

Not long ago, a dead whale was also swept ashore at the Lagos Bar Beach. It also attract a huge crowd and some people hacked it to pieces and carried them off despite the odious stench it was emitting.

When last have you ever heard of a whale anywhere near Nigeria?? Talk less of people going at it without fear??
Re: Lol:food-hungry Lagosians Hack On Dead, Smelly Whale - Food Is Ready by debosky(m): 8:00pm On Oct 25, 2007
Koboko its no joke or hoax, a similar incident happened sometime last year.

it was a beached whale and it was probably alive when the people started cutting and taking pieces off it, so it happens quite frequently.

Re: Lol:food-hungry Lagosians Hack On Dead, Smelly Whale - Food Is Ready by debosky(m): 8:18pm On Oct 25, 2007
listen there is no reason to be shocked - these people are poor and can barely afford protein in their diet, what do you expect them to do when the sea 'gives' them such a 'gift' as this?

Whales wash up from time to time, although I can't give you the exact frequency, this is the second in the past year and a half or so.

It is a race for survival, nothing more. Some want it for the novelty though, but generally its the poor underbelly of society engaging in this.

sad but true.

A few years ago there was a similar story on the BBC website about a dead whale that ended up at the Bar Beach. People came out to hack off the flesh for meat untill a group of area boys took control and started charging a fee for the privilege!

In a perverse way, it sums up some of the realities of Nigeria, such as poverty, hunger, extortion and the never-say-die entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians.

They are on a diet strictly composed of fish meal, so i think they must have been following doctors orders

stopping being naive.

Japan hack to death thousand of whale every year.

They should have medical expert to check its not poisoned and allowed the people to 'orderly' hack it for food.

Food is the worst thing to waste.

The British go whaling, the Japanese go whaling, we don't. We wait if a whale washes up shore, then we eat it. To a lot of people it's more of fun than anything else. Some people might have been hungry but most might have gone to take part just to say they did.

Why does prince charles or Dick Cheney go hunting in the bush? Is it because they are hungry?

I doubt that the Whale was rotten and smelly or else nobody would have gone a mile near it. For God sake, this is Lagos where in some areas during this season, you'll see fish swimming in your gutters. There's fish in all the waters and we don't see people stopping on their way from work or school to catch some so please.

How in the world is whaling same as hacking at a dead fish or a live fish that washed up shore?? Are you sure the Japanese do this? We are speaking of the equivalence of going out to pick up already dead chicken or road-kill to eat here. Whaling is a sport like hunting and it also a means of livelihood. Should we encourage our people to each sick animals that wash up on our beaches then?? Cause if you think this is right, I could print out flyers and we can have them all over lagos in a matter of days proclaiming it is ok that they continue doing this.

Anyway, I have HEARD of these sort of thing happening last year or so in Nigeria but my problem and the very reason why I find such stories hard to believe is that each time, there seems to be no pictures to back up the claims. Sorry I am remain a skeptic when it comes to these sort of reports. I have read me too many PRIME PEOPLE as a kid to know to want more information when I get news, especially from Nigeria, like this. You would think that in this day and age, someone would have at least captured a video or even a picture and placed it online or in a newspaper or something.

1. Japan and Russia go whaling, yes, but that's a far cry from hacking a washed-up whale for food. It's far more likely that in a developed country the dead whale will be kept for marine biologists to autopsy and check into the causes of its death.

2. Why prince Charles and Cheney? Thousands of people go hunting yearly, and many of them for sport. The animals killed are always eaten afterwards.

3. You really do think that impoverished, hungry people give a hoot if the meat is smelling or not? You remind me of when i was a kid and i used to wonder when i heard that people would jump into smelling gutters to hide from bombs during the biafran war. I always used to think that NOTHING would ever make me jump into a gutter, but now i know better. Desperate times call for desperate measures, whether it's jumpinginto a smelling gutter or hacking a dead, stinking whale to pieces.

@FSU
what i want to know is, why the 'lol' in your topic? Why laugh at the lengths less priviledged people will go to preserve their lives. i think it's in pretty bad taste.
Re: Lol:food-hungry Lagosians Hack On Dead, Smelly Whale - Food Is Ready by almondjoy(f): 1:42pm On Oct 26, 2007
@KoboJ.

You think the "natives" who are within proximal range of this cursed whale would wait for camera men stuck on 3rd Mainland Bridge traffic with operating day light marauders to pose for photo shoots?  Like we have "sky cams" to report above ground level events in Nigeria?

The privileged few who have managed to encounter a camcorder in this life time of theirs would not be caught dead near this rancid, unfortunate creature that found it's destiny apportioned to the shores of Africa.

However, if it were the case that some form of a "wait and take" device was available by design or default, the hungry "natives" would be too quick in hacking away that no iota of forensic evidence would be able to prove that the mirage of this said creature ever existed not to talk of fragments of its vertebral remains.

So please re-orient yourself with the realities of the environment you are discussing here to save you the grief of "disbelief".

Regards!---A.J.

Well, Texazzpette has graciously provided something that we cannot make out here so---I rest my case as with my previous post.   For all we know, to please people like kobojunkie--someone may have uploaded or downloaded the burning of a refuse dumpster/bush farming, caption of a tire-blazing, high-way robber or the roasting of a boar constrictor to make "the point here."   Best case scenario---the "natives" are already in a communual  "Food Is Ready" barbecue session, enjoying the "feast of whales"!

Ladies and gentlemen---Do you see any "whalic" remains in the above "shoot"?

I rest my case!

Here is the thing I know of Nigerians, we are copycats. You fit find Nigerian who literally lives under a bridge and has a Cell phone equipped with Camera. That is why I find it hard to believe that the newspapers are able to post these stories online but not post pictures. Have you not seen videos on youtube from nigeria of fights and other things?? I am sure they exist.

Thank you for the picture @Texazzpette, this is so far the first of such I have seen online. By the way, this fish did not come out dry ( I am guessing) Did the people in the picture pour gasoline or kerosene on it to get it to burn?? If so, you mean sey dem dey chop am with the kerosene and all

@kobojunkie,

I think it was back in 2001 that the first whale "landed" ashore somewhere in Lekki. I remember some of my colleagues and me going to take a look after hearing the reports. And true to some of what people have said here, there were people there cutting and taking pieces of the fish. Now whether they eventually took them home to eat, I do not know. And as someone said too, Area Boys eventually took over and started charging money.

Now this no be "dem say, dem say", I was there and saw it myself. I am sure we took pictures which I will try and look for this weekend. I'll post the pictures next week if I find them. I just hope I brought it along when I left Naija.

When people are hungry they can do anything Haven't you heard of people eating sacrifices placed at junctions and you are now complaining at the whale?

Bu burning it , they have turned it into ready made fish barbecue so all you need is your bowl of Garri and enjoy the God given Manna from the sea.

You people in Diaspora are actually oblivious of the desperate situation at home ( Naija) people sleep and live under the bridge and you are now complaining that they eat

whale people eat frog, they eat lizard, when they are desperate they can eat shit.

It is only to address the hopeless situation in Nigeria not to blame the people that eat dead whales at least they have not comitted any crime!!

this is the kind of irritating topics people post about Nigeria and Africa from most parts of the world and they claim they've done nothing wrong.

OH BROTHER!!!!

Anywhoo, I need to see those pictures please @DayoKanu, I mean those pictures would be classic. I may end up putting together collection of those.

Hey, like many said earlier, there is nothing really wrong with the story and LOL is not a bad idea. These are people eating food. So what if we would not eat the same or something, at least we should be happy that even in the bad, these people, through all there problems have food to eat for the day. I can imagine some of them may not have had food to eat for days and God sent them this fish ( even if I do not think so). If the man wants to add LOL to his post, no need for us to start insulting him cause of that
