Crime › UNICAL Issues Alert On Impending Cult War, Kidnapping On Campus by NigeriaLibrary(op): 11:53am On Nov 13, 2022 |
The management of the University of Calabar has raised an alarm about a plan to unleash mayhem on campus by rival cult groups.
The warning was contained in a statement signed by the institution’s registrar, Gabriel Egbe who cited an intelligence report as the basis for the alarm.
Egbe said the classified report indicated an imminent terror attack on staff and students of the institution.
According to the release: “The security report indicates that any moment from now, there will be
heightened cult activities and kidnappings within and around the University environment.”
The release also disclosed that the abductions are to be carried out by militants and their targets would be resident lecturers and some unidentified students.
The statement warned: “The attackers, according to the report may use the waterways and adjoining creeks to launch their attacks.”
The management of the university, according to the release, is reiterating its earlier position on
closing all entry and exit points into and from the campus, just as it reminded the Acting Chief
Security Officer of the institution to ensure adequate surveillance of all residential areas, especially those leading to the waterways.
The management, further assured staff and students that they would leave no stone unturned in ensuring a robust synergy between the internal security personnel and other security agencies in the task of protecting the lives of all residents and those doing legitimate business on campus.
While urging students to go about their legitimate activities “without fear of intimidation from any quarters,” the authorities of the institution called members of the university community to promptly report any unusual movements within and around the campus to the Acting Security Officer on a designated phone number. https://dailypost.ng/2022/11/09/unical-issues-alert-on-impending-cult-war-kidnapping-on-campus/?amp=1

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has stated that the institution has put in place several mechanisms to help hardworking students excel in their academics.
Prof. Obi stated this while addressing freshmen admitted for the 2021/2022 Academic session at the occasion of the Freshmen Orientation Ceremony held at the Institution’s International Conference Center.
“You have the right to say no to sexual advancement and molestation, I am a mother and we as parents did not send our children to be feasted upon by old men, but to be protected. We have centres you can report to, like the Centre for Gender Studies, Guidance and Counselling, as well as, some Youth Friendly Hubs.”
The University Administrator urged the students to be humble, well-dressed, polite and respectful to the staff of the University, this is even as she prayed for God’s guidance.
Also speaking, the Registrar, Mr Gabriel O. Egbe who spoke on “University Policies, Rules and Students Discipline”, said it is a tradition for the university to bring together freshmen to expose them to the basic policies, rules and regulations of the University, as well as, other range of services and privileges available to them as significant members of the University Community.
Mr Egbe said policies, rules and regulations are made to achieve certain ends intended to benefit all, this is even as he said the university is a corporate entity comprising the student, staff and Management.
He also urged the staff to play by the rules and regulations of the University which are geared towards actualising the mission and vision of the University, adding that, the University can be comparable to any other within and outside the country.
The Registrar further admonished the freshmen to imbibe the culture of self-discipline to win that “prestigious prize” which is the certificate, adding that, they should not relent in their determination to excel.
Earlier, the Dean, of Student Affairs, Dr Anthony Eyang while welcoming the freshmen to the institution, tasked them to hearken to the already laid down foundation for the task ahead. Dr Eyang assured the students that the institution is blessed with a dynamic Vice Chancellor that has put all that is needed in place to make them excel in their academic performance urging them to maximise the opportunity given to become better alumni/ambassadors of their alma mater and our dear country.

UNICAL Prof Attends COP 27 Despite Failing to Secure Appointment from Egypt Gov, Days after Refusing to Endorse Peter Obi
The 27th Conference of the Parties (COP 27) opened yesterday in the Egyptian City of Sharm El Sheikh, with delegates agreeing to adopt as an agenda item, the proposal by the Africa Group of negotiators for developed countries meet the costs incurred by developing countries when repairing infrastructure damaged by floods and other extreme climate conditions.
Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui of the University of Calabar was in attendance alongside other international delegates as a Leading Member of the United Nations’ Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Women Caucus Group, despite failing to secure any appointment from the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt ahead of the Conference. Recall, during the 26th Conference of Parties on Climate Change in Glasgow, Professor Aniebiet played a significant role during the Edu-Tech segments of the Conference and even received an appointed from the United Kingdom Government as a Member of the COP 26-UK Universities Climate Network.
In the buildup to the Conference in El Sheikh, the Nobel Prize nominee participated in various United Nations High Level Meetings, including the Climate Change High Level Meetings held in the German City of Bonn and was widely expected to lead Edu-Tech deliberations during the Conference. At the end of the meeting on “Partnerships for Capacity Development and Climate Change” in Germany, one of the participants said they were “looking forward to meet and work with Aniebiet Inyang Ntui during the High-Level Deliberations of COP 27”.
This all comes a week after the Most Read Researcher in Nigeria, came out through statements to various media groups including The Cable, to refuse to endorse Peter Obi for Presidency. She went further to claim that she is not “interested in any divisive issues or any political appointments” from the Labor Party. In June, Obi went to Egypt to understudy the education, power and finance sectors of the North African country and went with various high position officials. https://www.opinionnigeria.com/unical-prof-attends-cop-27-despite-failing-to-secure-appointment-from-egypt-gov-days-after-refusing-to-endorse-peter-obi/https://twitter.com/OpinionNigeria/status/1589709908621918209?cxt=HHwWgoCg9aev5I8sAAAA
