Obama advised Jonathan to avoid a Laurent Gbagbo scenario In his victory speech, Nigerian President-elect Buhari Muhammadu gave "special thanks" to U.S. President Barak Obama for "timely intervention" for peaceful and credible elections in Africa's most populous country. Now, a senior member of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), the party of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who had lost the election, is shedding more light on Obama's role. "Both Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron repeatedly called President Jonathan to concede defeat before the official announcement [of the poll results] because they had reports that his opponent had already won," the source, who had been privy to the phone calls," told The Anadolu Agency. "That was why the president called Buhari around 5pm on Tuesday to congratulate him," he said. Garba Shehu, Buhari's campaign spokesman, told AA on Tuesday, March 31, that Jonathan had called Buhari and conceded defeat in the March 28 polls. "I can confirm to you that the president called Gen. Buhari to congratulate him at exactly 5:15pm," Shehu had told AA at the time. The phone call took place almost ten hours before Nigeria's independent electoral commission officially declared Buhari the winner with a total of 15,424,921 votes against 12,853,162 for Jonathan. The PDP source said Obama and Cameron had told Jonathan that waiting until the official announcement "may be too late to douse tension or quell possible anger by his supporters." "Both men told him it would be far too costly – for Nigeria, Africa and Jonathan himself – to play another Laurent Gbagbo," he told AA. In 2010, Gbagbo rejected the results of presidential polls in Ivory Coast after the election commission declared his rival, Alassane Ouattara, the winner. The move led to a political crisis in the West African country and more than 3,000 people were killed in the ensuing violence, according to UN data. Gbagbo's arrest in April 2011 finally ended the bloody, four-month-long conflict. "President Jonathan honorably agreed to save the country any further bloodshed," the PDP source told AA. President Jonathan's spokesman Reuben Abati has not responded to AA repeated requests for comment on the story. In his victory speech on April 1, Buhari gave "special thanks" to Obama for the latter's "timely intervention and support for peaceful and credible elections in Nigeria." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and other American officials visited Nigeria in the run-up to the election and met the two frontrunners to seek their commitment to fair and peaceful polls. Jonathan, a Christian from Nigeria's oil-rich delta region, is Nigeria's first democratically elected president to lose power to the opposition. His electoral defeat last week marked the first time for the PDP to lose power since Nigeria returned to civil rule 16 years ago after three decades of military dictatorship. Buhari's APC now commands a majority in both houses of the national assembly. Nigeria has special relationships with both the United States and the United Kingdom. The Nigerian political elite looks up to Washington as an example of the presidential system Nigeria has practiced since 1979 when it held its first presidential elections. Until recently, the U.S. was the major importer of Nigeria's crude oil. Nigeria also imports much of its local needs, including military hardware, from the U.S. The U.S. remains a major source of foreign aid to Nigeria. Nigeria, which declared independence in 1963, is a member of the Commonwealth, an intergovernmental organization of territories of the former British Empire. Most of Nigerian military officers get training at Britain's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Mons Officer Cadet School. http://www.aa.com.tr/en/rss/491052--did-obama-push-nigerias-jonathan-to-concede-defeat

(CNN)March 28 was a historic date in Nigeria's history as it marked the first time the opposition defeated the ruling party in democratic elections in Africa's most populous country and biggest economy. Muhammadu Buhari, a former military leader who had ruled Nigeria for a 20-month period in the early 1980s, campaigned as a born-again democrat and saw the tide of public opinion turn in his favor. Here, CNN's African Start-Up examines Buhari's campaign strategy and reveals the key business lessons entrepreneurs can adapt for startup success. If at first you don't succeed... keep going This wasn't the first time Buhari had run for the highest political office in Nigeria -- in fact, it was his fourth attempt. He could have quit on several occasions, but didn't, and his persistence was rewarded at last month's polls. Buhari's endurance and perseverance in the face of setbacks is a key lesson young entrepreneurs can take heed of, says Femi Longe, co-founder and programs director at CcHub, a tech innovation space in Lagos. "The reality is that starting a business is everyday slog," explains Longe, who is an expert in social entrepreneurship. "A huge chunk of startups is just surviving to see the next day. You don't know when the big break will come." Learn from mistakes and don't be afraid to re-brand Another area for entrepreneurs to take into consideration is Buhari's readiness to learn from the previous unsuccessful bids and make changes to the way he communicated his message. "He was willing to smile a bit more, was willing to dress in the outfits of the different tribes, he was willing this time to actually campaign extensively across the country to change the image that people had of him," says Longe. "There was a lot of work to make him more presentable." Similarly, startups need to be flexible and be able to adapt their campaigns to meed the needs of their target markets. Longe explains: "At the end of the day it's about your customers, it's about your users. And you need to think about how does my business appeal to each of their individual needs and concerns while not losing my core essence." Focus on setting the right agenda Buhari has also been praised for reading the ground reality accurately and delivering a focused and consistent message. Lazarus Apir, program manager of Transition Monitoring Group, a not-for-profit organization that helped monitor and corroborate official results, explains that even in Buhari's failed attempts in previous elections, he showed an unwavering focus on his outlook for the country. "Focus is very crucial," he says. "Buhari said security, he said corruption, he said infrastructure -- all of these problems have continued in Nigeria and today they are only at their worst. "He has kept the focus of things that he is seeing. If anyone wants to build a business empire for themselves, it is very important that they maintain focus. There is a temptation is to be overly dynamic but then (entrepreneurs) lose focus." Find the right team Many experts have hailed Buhari's choice of Yemi Osinbajo as running mate as part of the election success story -- a cue entrepreneurs can take in their business plans, says Longe. "The last time (Buhari) ran, he didn't have the appeal across the country. And this time he had an alliance that gives him appeal across the country. He has people that helped with improving the image of the areas where people had worries about his personality. He was able to work through all of them," he continues. "We are not judging him as an individual but the collective capabilities of the team around him. The focus is not on one man but the team. Where the man himself has a weakness, the rest of the team can cover that and you need to have your A-players in charge." Embrace social media and use it properly Social media has globally become one of the most important tools for candidates during election campaigns -- and Nigeria's race was no exception. Cynthia Mbamalu, programs manager at Nigerian youth charity YIAGA, said platforms like Twitter and Facebook helped the Buhari campaign to reach population pockets that they could have otherwise missed. "Social media provided the opportunity to connect with Nigerians, especially young people," she explains. "For the first time in a long while there were tweets targeted mainly at promoting the person of General Buhari and the party's vision for Nigeria." Mbamalu says the main selling point for startups to incorporate social media into their ongoing strategies is that it allows businesses to enter a vibrant marketplace and engage with customers. "Customer satisfaction is vital in every business endeavor; people are more open to a system that guarantees that their opinions are important. Social media provides the right amount of buzz a viable business idea may need." But she adds: "Businesses need to understand intrigue, trends and interplay on social media to strategically carve its niche." http://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/09/africa/startup-lessons-nigerian-election-buhari-campaign/index.html

The State of Israel has expressed its willingness to assist the in-coming administration of General Mohammadu Buhari (retd.) to fight insurgency. Israeli President, Reuven Rivlin, according to a statement by the Media Director of Buhari campaign organisation, Mr. Garba Shehu, made the pledge in a congratulatory letter signed by him and delivered to the President-elect on Monday in Abuja. The Israeli leader in the letter, delivered by the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Uri Palti, noted that the two countries faced “similar dangers and challenges in our daily struggle against those who want to terrorise our citizens.” He said, “The latest news regarding the Boko Haram-ISIS alliance underscores the need for like-minded countries to unite in the fight against such radical terrorist organisations. “I assure you that in this important campaign, Israel stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Nigeria. “I wish you every success in the challenging task ahead and trust that under your presidency, the relations of friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Israel will continue to expand and strengthen.” Buhari, according to the statement, expressed his warm appreciation of the Israeli gesture and pledged to work with all countries to their mutual benefits. http://www.punchng.com/news/terrorism-israel-pledges-to-support-buhari/ |

By Ben Agande Abuja – Barely a month to his exit having lost the Presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan, Sunday, reviewed his sojourn in government and declared that he has been in a cage for 16 years. President Jonathan who bared his mind when the Christian community in Abuja paid him the traditional Easter homage said he has had enough and expressed gratitude to Nigerians for giving him the opportunity to serve. While describing himself as one of the luckiest Nigerians today, President Jonathan said Nigerians had given him opportunity to serve the country in the last 16 years at different levels of leadership noting that he remained grateful to God and the people of the country for providing him with such privilege. His words: “this Easter period coincides with when I’m leaving but I always say I’m one of the luckiest Nigerians. From 1999 I have been in the hands of government. I am yet to see somebody luckier than me. “I was in the hands of governments for 16 years, not in government as a parliamentarian, because if you are in the National Assembly or state House of Assembly, you take care of yourself in your house. I was in a cage being taken care of by the government. But I think it is enough and I am happy, help me thank God for that”. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/i-was-in-a-cage-for-16-years-says-jonathan/

Vice President Namadi Sambo has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his decision to accept the outcome of the election. Speaking when the Christian community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) paid President Jonathan Easter homage at the the State House, Abuja on Sunday, Sambo noted that the decision has saved the country and made it the pride of Africa. According to him, Jonathan’s name in the country will ever be in gold. He said the President has groomed him in the past five years to PHD level while the same period would have been used by others in a conventional university to get Bsc. or Masters degree. “I am proud to be your deputy. You are my brother and teacher forever. For the five years I have been with you, I have got PHD from you. I am for ever loyal to you and we are of the same family.” Noting that Easter Sunday is a special day of resurrection of Jesus Christ, Sambo prayed for God’s wisdom for the president in leading the nation. www.thenationonlineng.net/new/i-am-proud-to-be-jonathans-vp-sambo/

Is this CAN President truly representing Christians ? |
Born-based Pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, said on Sunday that the wife of Christian Association of Nigeria President, Pastor Ayo Oristejafo, lied against him that he had begged her husband over the alleged N7bn bribe collected from President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the presidential election in the country. Musa-Dikwa had accused the CAN leadership of collecting N7bn from Jonathan to campaign against the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Maj-Gen.Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in the run-off to the presidential contest. The cleric told one of our correspondents on the telephone in Kaduna that he had not set his eyes on the CAN president for over a year now, let alone seeing him to beg as claimed by Oritsejafor’s wife. Musa-Dikwa challenged the CAN leader’s wife to tell the world where and how he had met her husband to beg for forgiveness over an allegation he said he had not regretted. According to him, the current leadership of the CAN must, as a matter of urgency, resign, and “sin no more” and stop “tarnishing the image” of Nigerian Christians. The pastor called on Oritsejafo and his cabinet to repent, urging the “real” men of God in the country to dissolve the current leadership of the Ayo Oritsejafor-led CAN before it was too late. He noted that he was not surprised at the current antics by the wife of the CAN leader to blackmail him as other means to armtwist him to meet the CAN president had long failed. He explained that on several occasions, the CAN leader had used the Directorate of State Services and other Christian leaders to get to him but to no avail. Musa-Dikwa added that he was aware all entreaties from some men of God for him to see Oritsejafor for “settlement” was aimed at rubbishing him since he blew the lid over the N7bn bribery scandal. He said, “I have not seen Pastor Oritsejafor in the past one and half years. They are the ones that have been sending emissaries to me for settlement, but I have always refused to go. “The wife(Oritsejafor’s) is lying. I have never seen Ayo’s wife in my life. They have used the DSS to force me to write statements. They are lying against their spirits and their God. “Let them bring witness(proof) that I went to beg Ayo. Is it in Abuja or Warri? “They have been sending men of God to me for settlement. The CAN’s North Central zone chairman, Yakubu Pam, even told me that I should go and meet Ayo and that he talked to him, but I refused. “Many of them(christian leaders) have been calling me, asking to meet the CAN leader and settle and I said, ‘what for?’ In fact, they said I should not talk again and that they know that all I have been saying the true. “Even they have called me, requesting that I denounced that they collected money and that they are going to give me money but I refused.” www.punchng.com/news/oritsejafors-wife-lied-says-borno-pastor-dikwa/ |
By Augustine Adah Snr Correspondent, Lagos A Yoruba traditional priest and the Egbeji of Nigeria, Bola Adegunloye, has predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, will win the governorship election on April 11. Adegunloye, who spoke to journalists in Lagos at the weekend maintained that “Despite the support and sympathy garnered by the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jimi Agbaje, it will be difficult for him to win the next governorship elections in Lagos State.” The priest, who claimed that he had predicted the defeat of President Jonathan in 2015 presidential election since last year, stated that with the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as the country’s president, Nigerians will definitely heave sigh of relief. Adegunloye stressed: “I want to tell Nigerians to remain hopeful and pray fervently because the new administration will chart a better course that will transform the country better than what we are experiencing at the moment”. He advised APC to be careful in managing internal disputes that may arise from the victory as many PDP members will soon want to join the party. He emphasised that what led to President Goodluck Jonathan’s “defeat at the poll was his inability to positively affect the lives of ordinary Nigerians while the opportunists were busy looting government treasury.” Adegunloye further predicted that APC will retain power for another eight years at the centre, strssing, “I see the victory of APC at the centre extending for another eight years.” dailyindependentnig.com/2015/04/yoruba-priest-predicts-victory-ambode/ |

Residents of Asaba, Delta State are yet to recover from the shock of how a 19-year- old Godwin (not real name) allegedly impregnated his mother while testing his love charm. According to report, the boy, famously known as Ekenem, was said to have gone to a native doctor, who allegedly prepared a love charm for him to use on his mother and one of the matrons in the college where he is a boarding student. It was gathered that the husband of the woman, who has been away for some time outside his Port Harcourt operational base, denied being responsible for the pregnancy during interrogation. But the victim, the suspect’s mother, while speaking to journalists said, “I did not know how it all happened, but all I can say is that a young man who looked like my son suddenly found his way into my room at the wee hours and I was speechless”, adding that the whole exercise had remained inexplicable. Speaking at the police headquarters to journalists, the suspect said, “I am deeply sorry for all that has happened, I did not mean to do this. I saw myself falling in love with her after the love charm prepared for me. I have to confess because I know by so doing, God will touch her mind and I know she will forgive me. I suddenly found that I was making love to mum when I thought the charm will not work, and upon the revelation, I threatened to kill her and the matter was reported to the police”, he said. DSP Celestina Kalu, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, who confirmed the report, disclosed that the boy had since been arrested over threat to life. |
