Hi sweeties,

Please I seriously need ips uniport past questions and answers plus recommended mathematics or engineering textbook to study in preparation for ips exams. Even current affairs, mostly world current affairs, just don't know where and how to get a compilation of them.
Google is just disappointing me with india's current affairs when I search for world current affairs. grin

Career / Re: Which Speciality Is The Best In Medicine And Surgery by nkiruberyl: 7:08pm On Jan 22, 2016
Internal medicine like in other countries is supposed to be the most well paid because it's broad like it covers a bit of every other field and u also have to specialise e.g in endocrinology etc after your part 1 exams if and when you pass. N/B: internal medicine is the most stressful but it's truly worth it. You will have this satisfaction in you, that you're able to heal a patient who has exhausted every other option and labelled an 'emergency'. Also, there's a big room for research and development. So many untapped fields waiting for who's interested and passionate enough.

For me,follow your heart and what really interests you as a doctor. The money flows whatever field you are in as a consultant, but you have to trust me that it's not an easy route to get there.

But community medicine, its a no no for me. Personally,i dont fancy it in this country for doctors.

innovation and product development as regards new product formula cards. I had my IT in SC Johnson wax limited Lagos, makers of Raid and Baygon insecticides, mosquito coil, nixoderm etc. At a point we required cheaper raw materials for the coil production that will be just as effective and yet accessible. Only chemistry will break your choice down to its empirical form for in depth understanding and likely applications. It was assigned to me as a challenge and after 2 weeks I came up with cassava. It was tried and worked just fine. That's innovation. On product development, during the ebola period, there was a need for an effective hand sanitizer. We didn't study the virus, but we know exactly the amount of each reactants to put together and save our selves. What started like a lab joke was later commercialized by the same firm and sold in plastic containers to the public. I just love chemistry.

I love I love I love...man,you just revived my hope for chemists in this country. you see, you're opportune to feel and enjoy your core course unlike most of us. Right now, I need you! Maybe this will feel better through a personal interface other than nairaland and yes yes,i need the pack. Berylokafor@gmail.com. *mwah* *mwah*. I'm really excited! Expecting your mail sooooooon.
Career / Re: Confused!!.... Which Job Should I Go For? by nkiruberyl: 2:45am On Jan 19, 2016
yeniajayi:
Hey nairalanders.... Just in a moment need your help....

After several months of looking for a well prefer job that suits my career.... It was just untill this month that I was called by several companies that had interviewed me in the past for employment.. But the first offer that came first was from a pharmaceutical company which offered to pay me about 55k as their medical sales representative and after then they sponsored my trip to their head office which is outside lagos for trainings to allow me have a better product knowledge of my work. The training was quite huge as they spent so well to keep me comfortable in a hotel for about a week with feeding couple with little allowance coming back.. But now after getting back to lagos to start the job, I got an offer of employment from a company(which isnt too related to my field) but are willing to pay 12ok......
Now am at a cross-road thinking which one should I go for? Looking at the reasources the pharmaceutical firm had spent on me and also that I do like the job description of the pharmaceutical firm own as it gives room for me to build myself more.

So what can I do? As both require me to start work immediately by monday

You like the job description et al is because you're fresh from their training and definitely, they kept you spell bound by their endless stories of how sales people are ruling the world. Honey, the field is crazy! Marketing is one job, my generation will not attempt. Trust me,when reality dawns on you, you'll be singing an entirely different song.
Mind you, you're not into production or quality control/assurance of any sort, so I'm wondering the career you're building as a sales person when you studied biochemistry.
What you don't also know is that sales people, mostly females are disregarded here in nigeria. Immediately you start talking to potential clients, all they see in your face is that spelling that begins with V. It'll take you enough wits and grace of God to get past this initial stage and also believe me baby, this company you're feeling all mushy mushy for will drop you like the expenses spent on your training is stolen funds they care less about once you don't start meeting targets.
Don't get me wrong, people build careers as sales people and of course it comes with perks like you having a network of friends, supposed clients, whom you can also sell your products to whenever you start your own business or even beyond business, you never can tell BUT in this country, its only favourable for men. once you start succeeding as a lady, you're seen as a free ass giver unless the madness of marketing is well spelt on you body(e.g is boil-like pimples all over your face, spit drying from endless speeches to customers to convince them etc ),that is when people will actually start believing your success is on merit.

For the 128k job that is not your supposed career, grab it like one of Sidney Sheldon's protagonist,leslie...infact, that's why I enjoy reading his novels, his women are always focused! What am I saying? The money involved,128k, in this our times should make it a challenge for you to build a career on the job and love it. If you are smart, you won't regret this action.

Someone in this thread mentioned that your company might be testing you to know if you're greedy by asking you to take a job in a company YOU,YOURSELF applied months ago to (plz permit me to laugh in swahili, huhuhuhu) and that with time, the pharmaceutical company will match the pay of the 128k person. You all need one day special training from me on what a career in sales here in nigeria means.

N/B: I sincerely feel for the pharmaceutical company that I'm dissing their hustles like this not minding the money they've spent on you. of course,i have a conscience..well,ill blame it on the jobless state of the country that oblivious of what people want are pushed to apply for all sorts of job.

My 2cents!

yea true to a reasonable extent. I passed out July 2015 so am quite fresh, just that I knew my way around a little. If you know what you did and think sch is all der is, I see it as choice. But there's always something about experience you can't buy with masters. There must be a beginning (mostly humble ones) and den the projection happens. Am so positive about chemistry. I always feel I can create anything! Like am d most dangerous man alive right now and many of such feeling you know cool

Woow,im as fresh as you are but your confidence is out of this world. You know your way around, now I'm curious...m.sc starts September and i'm so in need of a job till September happens. I'm in ph, I need your guide.
VcStunner:
good to have you. Industrial chemists are not toyed with by those who want to excel in innovation and product development. You as a chemist need to know your course very well on the other hand. Nothing gives confidence like knowledge. Try to know almost everything about life, I mean it won't do you well to have a 2-1 but don't know the name of the immediate past minister of commerce and industry or the coach that took ur national team to world cup in 2002. Little things like this maybe all it will take you to earn above 90k after grad. No one will ever ask you to synthesize cholestryl palmitate on arrival. Let no one ever tell you der is no job!! Jobs are everywhere, pple change it everyday! Be totally prepared.

Chemists in "innovation and product development"...now, i'm confused. Knowledge of current affairs, nice one! Though I go further with gmat and shl. Can u please recommend books whether hardcopy or softcopy I can soak myself in,in preparation for IOC's exams and interview?...IOC,i mean international oil companies(total, mobil etc).
Thanks vstunner!

I know of where you can get a year m.sc on that. Very intensive but expensive

Wow, congratulations...Nowadays,chemists are not really acknowledged and NYSC is only in schools. Guess it's been a while you served. For multinational jobs, its almost impossible unless with an m.sc. Most chemists are in the bank, schools, companies as marketers, front desk officers etc.

Project management and health, safety and environment (HSE) certificates. Didn't take neither of the 2 certs for me. Never went to compete with guys in the field, so I got me Stock and Inventory supervisor position. Versatility is key though. My igbo nature is helping smiley

Really, nice to here. What company is that?

checked it up.... sounds like a bright idea, though I get the feeling it's quite competitive smiley
No specialties yet, just drifting around with a couple of professional certs, and hoping to get a nod from PTDF for MSc. Currently I work with an engineering firm, nothing related.

For a chemist with just b.sc in an engineering firm, you've done well for yourself. Can I please know some of the professional certs you acquired and what it took you to get to the firm you are in,right now? If it's too personal an info to dish out,i dont mind giving out my email address.
Thanks!

Do your m.sc in environmental sciences/mgt. IPS is expensive in terms of the fee & the school is also competitive in terms of admissions. As an Industrial chemist, you are not limited by your environment...

Yes,it is expensive but I just can't keep my eyes off there. ive tried severally to check up other schools,my thoughts are still geared towards ips at the end of the day. Well, thanks for the advice but it is engineering in ips or nothing. Though I had interest in environmental studies but that interest is now dead due to some factors I considered.

Ok,its institute of petroleum studies in ph. they have various oil and gas courses for m.sc and phd. you can google it for more clarification. Just out of curiosity,as a chemist what are you doing now? Like what have you specialised in?

you may not like the idea of the location but Othman Dan fodio University sokoto may be ur best shot because the department was recently improved by PTDF for that specific course. So it's safe to say you can liken a masters in the sch with what's obtainable in Hertherfordshire, Swansea uni and Co. But other schools exist though e.g UI, AUN-yola, for 18months duration

Thanks a million @vstunner.i think I've made up my mind to go for engineering in ips, uniport.though it'll cost me an extra year of pgd.but please if you have the knowledge, which of the ips courses is the best bet for me in terms of opportunities out there. They don't have Chem. Engineering but petroleum engineering and other oil and gas courses. Please help me out if you know.
Meanwhile, are you a chemist? I mean,im just wondering because of your indepth knowledge on what I want.
Well,thanks alot!

this country is not stable at the moment for one to predict the trend of things accurately... but all indications are pointing towards agriculture that's why the need for petrochemistry. Biomass and renewable energy resources havn't really found their place in the economy. Except you are an individual who wants to go in fresh to invest. I strongly believe Petrochemistry will compete favorably cuz we are facing a new challenge of finding what else to do with our chemicals. Think of Paints, Bonds, plastics, polymer, recycling companies, fertilizers, insecticides, germicides, pesticides etc. Chem. Eng will be nice too if you have the patience for PGD, but my instinct doesn't tell me much about Environmental studies, Nigeria hasn't found a use for that yet.

@vstunner- thanks a lot for this piece.please can you recommend good schools that can be likened to ips, uniport or any institute that I can do the m.sc in petrochemistry for one year not minding the cost?
Career / Re: Professionals, Career Guides, Experienced Chemists, Please Come In Here! by nkiruberyl: 6:12am On Jan 14, 2016
VcStunner:
Industrial Chemistry is a very very versatile course, so wide that you can do your masters even in Chem. Eng. But with the trend of events right now in the country, I really think one should start looking at petrochemicals ( M.sc Petrochemistry ) in that way you are widening ur chances into fertilizers, polymer, oil and gas etc. But a more interesting one is Analytical Chemistry where u can be important in all manufacturing firms and even lecturing combined.

Thanks vstunner. I actually was thinking chemical engineering b4 the oil industry started messing up and also adding the fact that I need to do pgd first coz I don't have an engineering background. But what if I go into eviromental studies. Like waste management, natural resources, sustainable development, do you think it's viable out there in the labour market?
Are there opportunities for environmentalists in nigeria? Please I need to hear from you thanks!

Funny enough if someone had advised you otherwise, would you have agreed? I really don't think so.

The problem is a lot of people are blinded to the Reputation (or past reputation) of big names.

From experience, the best in science are self-taught. Though you might need some guidance (depending on whom you are) but in developing countries such as Nigeria, you are better off having Google as your partner. Because most of those lectures (average teachers all got their content online with little or no modification.

I believe you have learnt some lessons anyway though in a hard way

Certainly..though I was advised about the past glory thing but trust me,Niit certificates still speaks volume in the I.T world. Henceforth, its me and google. Uhlala. Tnx alot!
