SEFAGO:

Yeah it sucks. I have gotten a somewhat offer from a very lowly ranked school though lol but it was my safety. I still have to nail that one. It is a big name school but lowly ranked in my field of interest. So when you applied for your PhD did you write the professors you wanted to work for? And did you contact professors? I know people who got in the backdoor route- they knew and had done research with professors in the evaluation committee.

"backdoor route" sounds like "unfair route".

Considering the nature of research at grad schools (at least the hard sciences like engineering), applicants with research experience (especially gained under a prof on the eval comm) are highly sought. All admission comms will look kindly on "continuity".

1. You dont need a new research orientation which may take the better part of a semester or two (potential savings in time).

2. Funding (for Reserach Assistants) most often come from the prof's research group via highly contested and limited govt/industry sources. Its smarter to give (yes, that GA stipend is really a gift from God to many nigerians) money to someone whose research capabilities you can verify personally than someone you know from an application (canda/kpali/paper), (potential savings in money).

Ofcourse there is the possibility that students with little or no experience with or without the prof may become excellent research assistants. However, when money and time is involved, most managers (including grad school managers) will choose to err on the side of caution. grin

SEFAGO:

hehe, I have gotten so many rejections in the past two days its quite demoralizing. I am a few steps away from breaking into tears

Its tough to get rejected by many grad schools but please do not give up. You can still get a yes for this fall.

Please dont hit yourself. Sometimes its a "sitting space" problem. Many grad schools receive applications from more qualified applicants than they can admit.

Mail profs at your proposed dept. Indicate your admission status. If the prof in question cant ask for a reversal, indicate your willingness to apply for the next admission cycle. Do a lot of research before you send that mail. Remeber applying to grad depts/schools with research focus like yours will do your application a ton of good.

Also try applying to some safety schools. That is schools with min. qualifications far below your GPA, GRE and TOEFL scores.

If you do decide to apply again, also consider applying very early. Have a complete application (this includes having all your recs and transcripts on file in the school) several weeks before the deadline. This idea, however, is hotly contested by some applicants I know. They feel applying a little late is ok. Personally I think having a late or almost late application potentially does more harm than good.

Just thinking about the stress of applying is stressful but now there is the added experience from former applications so the process would hopefully be easier. Wishing you good luck and testimonies right here on NL.

Hey people, been a long while. I'm expecting an admit any time soon. So nervous I've been freaking out, i hope it doesn't turn to paranoia. Can't just imagine that after all the stress I went through I would not get an admit- won't happen folks.

Infact, I'm expecting an admit with aid. Join me in prayers,

I'm with you my brother,

I believe in prayers so let us pray together. Superbrain, by the grace of God, we'll post our testimonies here.
Education / Re: Prove The Identities (math) by NKnight: 2:07am On Nov 14, 2009
As before, we will use the following identities sin(A+B) = sinA * cosB + cosA * sinB
and cos(C+D) = cosC * cosD - sinC * sinD

A = x and B = 17
C = x and D = -12

Expand

[ sinx * cos17 + cosx * sin17 ] * [ cosx * cos(-12) - sinx * sin(-12) ] = 0.7

Open up the brackets

sinx * cos17 * cosx * cos(-12) - sinx * cos17 * sinx * sin(-12) + cosx * sin17 * cosx * cos(-12) - cosx * sin17 * sinx * sin(-12) = 0.7

Make it neat
I would prefer to retain the cos17,sin17 etc till the last but u should get the idea so substitute for cos17,sin17,cos(-12) and sin(-12)

PLEASE FOLLOW DO THE EXPANSION URSELF WITH PAPER AND PENCIL and calculator!
SHOW UR WORKINGs IN AN EXAM!!!

make sure u get something close to this: 0.99619sinxcosx + 0.28598(cosx)^2 + 0.19883(sinx)^2 = 0.7

sub for sin or cos

(sinx)^2 + (cosx)^2 = 1

(sinx)^2 = 1 - (cosx)^2 (when u r solving use cos and see that u get the same answer)

let cosx=a to make the work look neater o! remember we are still looking for x and not a
if cosx=a then sinx=sqrt(1-a^2)

0.99619sinxcosx + 0.08715(cosx)^2 = 0.50117

0.99619*a*sqrt(1-a^2) + 0.08715*a^2 = 0.50117

0.99619*a*sqrt(1-a^2) = 0.50117 - 0.08715*a^2

Square both sides

(0.99619*a*sqrt(1-a^2))^2 = (0.50117 - 0.08715*a^2)^2

0.99239*a^2*(1-a^2) = (0.50117 - 0.08715*a^2)^2

0.99239*a^2*(1-a^2) = 0.25117 - 0.08735*a^2 + 0.0076*a^4

1.00113*a^4 -1.07974*a^2 + 0.25117 = 0

Classic quadratic, u can see it better if u sub a^2 with b

1.00113*b^2 -1.07974*b + 0.25117 = 0

b1 = 0.74 and b2 = 0.339

remember that b = a^2
therefore a = sqrt(b)

a1 = 0.86 and a2 = 0.582

also remember that a = cos x
therefore x = arc cos a (this will be cos^-1(a) on ur calculator)

x1 = 30.68 degrees x2 = 54.41 degrees

x1 = 30.68 degrees

0.68degrees =0.68*60minutes approx 41min x1 = 30deg41min

x2 = 54.41 degrees = 54deg25min

FOR THE OTHER VALUES

Notice that the cosine and sine curves are sinusoidal, the values of the function repeats periodically

so for cosx = 0.86 there are many many many values of x just keep adding 180degrees to either 30.68 or 54.41degrees.

The reason can be traced to what is called the period of a function. For cosx and sinx functions, the period is pi radians or 180degrees
That is cos(x) = cos(x+pi) when x is in radians
or cos(x) = cos(x+180) when x is in degrees

30.68,210.68,390.68 etc
or 30deg41', 210deg41', 390deg41' etc

Same goes for the other answer

My dear friend,

Please take the following advice to heart.

My high school math teacher told me that most of what I would learn in math would be by self study.
I understand that things are hard. Its hard for everyone to different degrees. One thing u can be sure about is that ur situation is not the hardest and it is also not the easiest.

Na naija we dey and nobi only u wey dey work dey school at d same time. Some dey try find work to supplement, but dem no see.

Seriously nothing can substitute for working hard TO GET THE BASICS because as I said earlier, evry in science depends on a few foundations. That is why you should get a book (even if na borrow) and study, study and study. After u know the basics cold, then the next important thing is to use the basics that u know to solve ur problems.

I sincerely hope you can develop yourself. Don't wait for your lecturers and then start looking for someone to blame.

A word is enough for the, smiley grin
Education / Re: Prove The Identities (math) by NKnight: 11:13pm On Nov 10, 2009
Please fellow Nl, help on these:
1.sinx-sin(x+60)+sin(x+120)=0
2.cox+cos(x+120)+cos(x+240)=0

We will use the following identities sin(A+B) = sinA * cosB + cosA * sinB
and cos(A+B) = cosA * cosB - sinA * sinB

For ur problem simply substitute for A and B as required and note that sin60=0.5*sqrt(3), cos60=0.5, sin120=0.5*sqrt(3), cos120=-0.5, sin240 = -0.5*sqrt(3), cos240= -0.5

(since there is no equation editing software let sqrt(x) be defined as x^0.5, where x is a number)

The first question would then become

sinx - sinxcos60 - cosxsin60 + sinxcos120 + cosxsin120

sinx - 0.5*sinx - 0.5*sqrt(3)cosx - 0.5*sinx + 0.5*sqrt(3)cosx

rearranging

sinx-0.5*sinx-0.5*sinx- 0.5*sqrt(3)cosx + 0.5*sqrt(3)cosx = 0

(1-.5-.5) * sinx - ( 0.5*sqrt(3) - 0.5*sqrt(3) ) * cosx

(0)sinx -(0)cosx

0-0

0. Done.

Ok so finish up Number 2.

If are interested in maths pls get a good maths book and study on your own. Sounds boring right, but believe me, if u hope to further ur studies along the sciences (I'm assuming u are still in highschool and yet to make that decision) the dividends far outweigh the time spent in proper study. In school I used Bunday, Stroud and Kreiyzig. Leave Kreiyzig until much later maybe ur first yr in college.

Appreciate the fact that the entire body of scientific knowledge is based on a few but exetremly solid set of foundations. Everything and I mean everything in science is built on previous knowledge.

If the foundation is false then everything built on that foundation will fail given sufficient time or under adequate attack.
But if the foundation is true then slowly but surely all progress will lead to light and neither time nor man made attacks will shake it.

This is true in core academic research and even in your academics. For example, if u miss the right form of the trig identity in Q1 then we wont be solving anything, it might as well be scratches on paper. Much later this problem would just become a small part of a bigger problem u would be solving and so on, grin

Properties / Naming Nigerian Streets. by NKnight: 4:44pm On Nov 01, 2009
Hello nairalanders,

Does anyone know the procedure to follow in creating or changing street names in Nigeria?

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) gives that power to the Local Government Councils.

1. The main functions of a local government council are as follows:
(a), ;
(b), ;
.
.
.
(g) naming of roads and streets and numbering of houses;
.
.
.

I would be very grateful if I can get answers to some of these questions:

1. What role do residents play in facilitating the naming or name change of a street?

2. Are there special privileges given to the first resident family on a street when it comes to naming of streets?

3. How do these privileges (if any) affect the renaming of the street at some future date?

Thanks guys!

@ zukkie4eva,
Thats the way to go! Morale High my brother.
Please get to know the deadlines for your application. If you are a Fall (or Spring) 2011 applicant, I'd say you almost have got all the time in the World. But if you are considering 2010 then make double sure that you will meet the deadlines.
Most competitive schools rarely have deadlines beyond Feb. of the admission year. The irony is that it is precisely those highly competitive schools that give out the most funding/scholarships to their admits. I guess thats why they are so difficult (relatively speaking) to get into, in the first place.

While preparing for the GRE let us not forget about the TOEFL.
Preparing for both at the same time and taking them within a a week or two apart does pay off.

@ All,
Does anyone in Nigeria know how long it takes to get the mailed scores from GRE?

@ SEFAGO,
I know u must be real busy now. Please dont forget to mail me.

@ Superbrain,
Please what dept is ur friend at MIT. Is he doing M.Sc. or Ph.D.? Any idea on the funding scenario there?

We will miss you. But your input is forever sealed on the pages of nairaland, (well, thats hoping the moderators leave 'em ). Hope you have a great time doing graduate work.
Could we summon up some courage and ask that you pop in, even if its once during the summer break?
Thanks. Good luck man!
Education / Re: Preparing for GRE by NKnight: 11:32pm On Sep 18, 2009
@ arshy,

You can convert your grades yourself unless your school specifically asks for a conversion/evaluation by a professional body. I think the Nigerian system is kind of a mix between the US credit system and the UK class system. For example, in Unilag, GPA is based on 5.00 scale even though we have first class, second class upper, etc.

So you may be familiar with the following (if u be naija student o!)
For a 1 unit course A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0
For a 2 unit course A=10, B=8,C=6,,
For a 3 unit course A=15, B=12, ,
.
.
.

For a pretty good estimate, just go through your transcript and replace the values of the grades as follows

For a 1 unit course A=4, B= 3, C=2, D,E=1, F=0
For a 2 unit course A=8, B= 6, C=4, D,E=2, F=0
For a 3 unit course A=12, B= 9, C=6, D,E=3, F=0
.
.
.
Say theres a dept in Uninaija where a guy has only 3 courses to take in 2 years to get a degree.

Year 1
nairaland101 (2 units)
nairaland102 (3 units)

Year 2
nairaland206 (5 units)

Transcript from uni naija
nrl101 (2) A 10 (2*5)
nrl102 (3) B 12 (3*4)
nrl206 (5) A 25 (5*5)
-----------------------
(10) 47
GPA at graduation = 47/10 = 4.7
i.e 4.70/5.00 equivalent to First Class Division(4.50-5.00) in Uninaija

GPA for uni yankee
nrl101 (2) A 8 (2*4)
nrl102 (3) B 9 (3*3)
nrl206 (5) A 20 (5*4)
-----------------------
(10) 37
GPA =37/10 = 3.7
i.e 3.70/4.00

You may have been quick to notice that GPA/5.00 = (GPA-1)/4.00 (that is subtract 1 from the Uninaija GPA to get the Uniyankee GPA. Caution: Use this ONLY when theres lots of A's in the transcript)

If theres a good number of B's and C's, I think its safer to just do the full GPA "re-calculation" as shown earlier.

If you kept a personal record (in spreadsheet format) when still in school then you are lucky. Just change the formulae you used
For A change 5 to 4
For B change 4 to 3 and so on. Click enter and you have your answer.

Dont be shocked by the answer, remember its now over 4.00.

Hi all,

@ Godeagle, arshy, SEFAGO, emmyclev
You guys have been great in the forum, especially with sharing your experience. Thanks a lot.
Took the GRE today. Had Q800, V590 and A(praying and hoping for 5). Currently serving but looking forward to grad study Fall 2010. Major Mech Engr, Unilag. Hope to continue same in a good graduate school. I am interested in fellowships and assistantships for Engr grad students.

Q is usually not very hard for Engineering guys (basically people with physical sciences background). V is something else. I think V requires long term prep to blast, unlike Q. I'm sure the humanities guys will disagree though. Reading wide helps because new words are seen/learnt in context. Avoid trying to cramp yourself cramming new words a few days to the test. The words will just float around somewhere outside your reach. Words in context are like anchored ships. Theres always something to hold on to.

I had hoped for a higher V but I am still very grateful to God and feel really thankful because he has helped me cross one more hurdle. For those of you preping for the test, I wish you speed, accuracy, steady feet, laser sharp memory and a little seasoning of Good Luck!
