As part of the family empire, I lived a life of luxury. Then doubts began to surface.

Almost 15 years ago, on a shoreline outside of Athens, Greece, I stood confidently in my relationship with the Lord and my ministry trajectory.


I was traveling the world on a private Gulfstream jet doing “gospel” ministry and enjoying every luxury money could buy. After a comfortable flight and my favorite meal (lasagna) made by our chef, we prepared for a ministry trip by resting at The Grand Resort: Lagonissi.


Boasting my very own ocean-view villa, complete with private pool and over 2,000 square feet of living space, I perched on the rocks above the water’s edge and rejoiced in the life I was living. After all, I was serving Jesus Christ and living the abundant life he promised.


Little did I know that this coastline was part of the Aegean Sea—the same body of water the apostle Paul sailed while spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. There was just one problem: We weren’t preaching the same gospel as Paul.


Lavish Lifestyle
Growing up in the Hinn family empire was like belonging to some hybrid of the royal family and the mafia. Our lifestyle was lavish, our loyalty was enforced, and our version of the gospel was big business.


Though Jesus Christ was still a part of our gospel, he was more of a magic genie than the King of Kings. Rubbing him the right way—by giving money and having enough faith—would unlock your spiritual inheritance.


God’s goal was not his glory but our gain. His grace was not to set us free from sin but to make us rich. The abundant life he offered wasn’t eternal, it was now. We lived the prosperity gospel.


My father pastored a small church in Vancouver, British Columbia. During my teenage years, he would travel nearly twice a month with my uncle, Benny Hinn.


Prosperity theology paid amazingly well. We lived in a 10,000-square-foot mansion guarded by a private gate, drove two Mercedes Benz vehicles, vacationed in exotic destinations, and shopping at the most expensive stores.


On top of that, we bought a $2 million ocean-view home in Dana Point, California, where another Benz joined the fleet. We were abundantly blessed.


Throughout those years we faced countless criticisms from both inside and outside the church. Dateline NBC, The Fifth Estate (a Canadian news program), and other shows did investigative work.


Well-known ministry leaders took to the airwaves warning people about our teachings, and local pastors told their congregations to steer clear of pulpits filled by a “Hinn.” At the time


I believed we were being persecuted like Jesus and Paul, and that our critics were just jealous of our blessings.


We Stand for your Religious Liberty
Within the family, we didn’t tolerate criticism. One day I asked my father if we could go heal my friend from school who had lost her hair due to cancer.


He replied that we should pray for her at home rather than going to heal her. I thought to myself, Shouldn’t we be doing what the apostles did if we have the same gift? At that point,


I didn’t question our ability to heal, but doubts began to stir about our motives. We only did healings in the crusades, where music created the atmosphere, money changed hands, and people approached us with the “right” amount of faith.


Other doubts would surface. What about unsuccessful healing attempts? I learned that it was the sick person’s fault for doubting God.


Why would we speak in tongues without interpretation? “Don’t quench the Spirit,” I was told. “He can do what he wants.” Why did many of our prophecies contradict the Bible? “Don’t put God in a box.” Despite the questions, I trusted my family because we were so successful. Tens of thousands of people followed us; millions packed stadiums annually to hear my uncle.


We healed the sick, performed miracles, rubbed elbows with celebrities, and got incredibly wealthy. God must be on our side!


Before going to college, I took a year off and joined Benny’s ministry as a “catcher” (someone who catches the people who are “slain in the spirit”) and personal assistant. This was a rite of passage in my family, as nearly every nephew worked for him at some point.


It was a show of loyalty and gratitude. That year was a whirlwind tour of luxury: $25,000-a-night royal suites in Dubai, seaside resorts in Greece, tours of the Swiss Alps, villas on Lake Como in Italy, basking on the golden coast of Australia, shopping sprees at Harrods in London, and numerous trips to Israel, Hawaii, and everywhere in between.


The pay was great, we flew on our own private Gulfstream, and I got to buy custom suits. All I had to do was catch people and look spiritual!


A Life-Changing Verse
After graduating college and returning home, I met my wife, Christyne. I had no idea that God would use her in bringing about my salvation. In fact, my family and I were nervous because she didn’t speak in tongues.


We set out to fix that problem by having her attend one of Benny’s crusades, but nothing happened. Next, she attended a service at my home church in Vancouver, but that didn’t work either.


Finally, she received some coaching at a youth conference, but she couldn’t manage more than a few mumbled syllables. I truly thought I could never marry her unless something changed.


Then one day she pointed to a verse I had never seen: 1 Corinthians 12:30 (“Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?”). I was shaken to the core. There it was plain as day—not everybody has to speak in tongues.


Soon, the domino effect began. Other longstanding beliefs were failing the biblical test. No longer did I believe that God’s purpose was to make me happy, healthy, and wealthy. Instead, I saw that he wanted me to live for him regardless of what I could get from him.


While struggling to strike out into ministry, I received a call from a pastor-friend who was planting a church in California, offering me a part-time youth pastor position.

It seemed like a perfect place to learn and grow, so Christyne and I packed up and took a step of faith as newlyweds.


Soon after joining the staff, God put the final crack in my false belief system, and the truth came bursting forth like a wave of grace. One of my first preaching assignments was John 5:1–17—the healing at Bethesda. As I studied for the sermon, my pastor-friend gave me a trusted commentary.


Then the Holy Spirit took over. The passage showed that Jesus healed one man out of a multitude, the man didn’t know who Jesus was, and the man was healed instantly!


This left three treasured beliefs in tatters. Isn’t it always God’s will to heal? No, Jesus only healed one man out of a multitude. Doesn’t God only heal people if they have enough faith? No, this crippled man didn’t even know who Jesus was (let alone have faith in him).


Doesn’t healing require an anointed healer, special music, and an offering collection? No, Jesus healed instantly with a mere command.


I wept bitterly over my participation in greedy ministry manipulation and my life of false teaching and beliefs, and I thanked God for his mercy and grace through Jesus Christ. My eyes were completely opened.


I am thankful that my wife was willing to question my insistence on speaking in tongues and that my pastor loved me enough to disciple me out of prosperity gospel confusion.


I’ve seen how God uses evangelism and discipleship to transform lost souls into found saints. A Christian’s greatest ability is availability.

For those who are not paying attention, things are deteriorating in Nigeria. Nigeria is a country in West Africa with a population of about 180 million people.

It's the most populous black nation on earth with oil and gold but also gargantuan challenges. Last night, at about 7pm local time, Boko Haram terrorists stormed an internally displaced persons camp in Rann,

A locality in the northeastern Nigerian state of Borno, and killed several United Nations aid workers, kidnapped some and killed many soldiers.

The full picture is not yet known. Last week Monday, at about the same time, Boko Haram stormed a school with over 900 schoolgirls in the northern Nigerian state of Yobe and kidnapped at least 110 of them.


They remain missing to date. On the Cameroonian side of the border, the killings and attacks are virtually every day

These attacks have increased in intensity in recent months.

They are coming a year to a presidential election in Nigeria, the same way they came a year to a presidential election in 2014 when hundreds of girls were kidnapped in Chibok enraging the world, including the then United States First Lady, Michelle Obama.


That mass kidnap is believed to have cost the former President Goodluck Jonathan the presidential election and painted him as a feckless leader.


Mr. Buhari, a retired Major-General, trash talked Jonathan and came to power spitting fire and vowing to defeat Boko Haram and rescue the Chibok girls.

He also promised to fight widespread and endemic corruption. But in the end, his boasts amounted to naught. The economy collapsed. The naira weakened to its lowest ebb since independence from brutal, wicked Britain in 1960.


Boko Haram regrouped and began launching attacks again and kidnapping schoolgirls. Officially, Boko Haram says western education is evil, and only a caliphate where pure Islam is taught and enforced would save the world.


But the real reason is oil, and international players seem to be involved, supplying weapons and training for nine years now. Between 25, 000 and 100, 000 have been killed since 2009, millions have been displaced, and thousands have been kidnapped and turned into either sex slaves or suicide bombers.


Things are bad, and Nigeria and Cameroon and Chad and Niger need prayers right now, in addition to resources to deal with this monster.

The Televangelist Benny Hinn Admits Going Too Far With Prosperity Gospel in the wake of Billy Graham's Death


In the wake of the death of renowned evangelist Billy Graham, controversial faith-healing televangelist Benny Hinn, who has often been criticized for his endorsement of the prosperity gospel, said in a stunning confession Wednesday that sometimes he has taken the erroneous gospel too far.


"We get attacked for preaching prosperity, well it's in the Bible, but I think some have gone to the extreme with it sadly, and it's not God's word what is taught, and I think I'm as guilty as others. Sometimes you go a little farther than you need to go, and then God brings you back to normality and reality,"

Hinn, 65, said as he reflected on Graham's death with a ministry colleague in a Facebook Live broadcast.


He admitted that as he has grown older and come to understand the Bible more, he now realizes that some of the things he learned from preachers when he was growing up aren't biblical and the popular interpretation of the prosperity gospel — the teaching that believers have a right to the blessings of health and wealth and that they can obtain these blessings through positive confessions of faith and the "sowing of seeds" through the faithful payments of tithes and offerings — is one of those things. "The more you know the Bible, the more you become biblically based and more balanced in your opinions and your thoughts because we are influenced.

When I was younger, I was influenced by the preachers who taught whatever they taught. But as I've lived longer I'm thinking to wait a minute, you know this doesn't fit totally with the Bible, and it doesn't fit with the reality. So what is prosperity? No lack. I've said this before," Hinn said.


He then elaborated on how he believes "no lack" should be interpreted. In Replacement To Prosperity Gospel Preaching


"Did Elijah the prophet have a car? No. Did not even have a bicycle. He had no lack ... Did Jesus drive a car or live in a mansion? No. He had no lack. How about the apostles? None lacked among them," Hinn said. "Today, the idea is abundance and palatial homes and cars and bank accounts. The focus is wrong ... It's so wrong."


He said even though he has been accused of living lavishly and flying private jets in the past, that is not how he currently lives.


"I mean forgive me. People have accused me of things that aren't even real. One guy wrote a comment 'Oh he's worth 40 million.' Oh, how I wish. I would give it all to the Kingdom before God Almighty," he said.


"'Well he flies private jets,'" he continued mimicking criticism. "No, I don't. I have not flown privately in dear God years. I fly commercial just like anyone else....


"We all sadly make the mistake of thinking that this is what God wants and God says 'No, that's not what I want.' It's time to live biblically. You know it all comes down to one thing.

Do we love Jesus, yes or no? If we love Jesus then it's all about Jesus. If we don't love Jesus then it's about other things," he said.


Hinn was one of six televangelists who were part of a 2007 Senate inquiry that raised questions about the personal use of church-owned airplanes, luxury homes and credit cards by pastors and their families, and expressed concern about the lack of oversight of finances by boards often packed with the televangelists' relatives and friends.

No definitive findings of wrongdoing were made. Hinn's World Healing Center Church and Joyce Meyer Ministries were the only two ministries that fully cooperated with the investigation and even implemented financial reforms.


Hinn, who was born into a Christian family in Israel, has repeatedly been accused of being a fraud and criticized for living extravagantly while leading a ministry that rakes in more than $100 million annually.


In a 2009 interview on ABC's "Nightline," Hinn denied being a fraud.


"I think if I were fooling the people, over 35 years of it now, I would have been caught already fooling them," he told the network.


Last April, after criminal investigators from the IRS and inspectors from the U.S. Postal Service, executed a closely guarded raid on the offices of Hinn's ministry in Grapevine, Texas, he revealed that they were looking into "certain operations of the church."



While he did not go into much detail about which aspects of his ministry federal officials had reviewed, he said in a statement on Facebook that he was confident the investigation will end favorably.


"As has been widely reported, Benny Hinn Ministries is cooperating fully with the governmental entities that are reviewing certain operations of the Church. The ministry has undergone intense scrutiny over the years, and we remain confident that there will again be a positive and speedy outcome in the days ahead," his ministry said.


During the broadcast, Wednesday, one of his colleagues, who has known him for 30 years, said Hinn would give every material thing that he has for the presence of the Lord.

As a pastor, Hinn also said he wants his life to end right with God.


"We all want to finish right," he said of pastors. "We all start right. Sometimes we, you know, stumble here and stumble there, but when you come right down to it, we all want to finish right. I'm 65 years old, I surely don't want to blow it at this point in my life and I thank you for praying for me. I really mean that."


Hinn, who began the conversation by reminding his audience of a prophesy he made in 1989 that the deaths of his mentor, Oral Roberts, and Billy Graham would bring about a great revival, said since both men are now dead, the revival has now been set in motion. Roberts died in 2009.


"What we are gonna see is a revival. Three things are going to happen; there's no doubt in my heart and mind because it's in the Bible. If you look at the Old and New Testament, you'll see three things always happening at the same time. Number one, evangelism. What was the first thing that happened in the book of Acts? People saved," he responded. "The second thing, miracles, people healed. But the third thing was what? Prosperity. ... Here we are in this season. We're gonna see amazing things happen in those areas of our lives and get ready for your children to be saved in a big way, your families to be saved in a big way, loved ones respond to the Lord in a big way."


He also pointed out that Christians across the world are being persecuted and that American Christians have been spared "up to now," but he wasn't sure if "we will be spared for a whole lot longer."


"I am praying. I want persecution to come for my sake 'cause I want to get purer before the Lord ... I think persecution ... like fire purifies," he said.


"The early church was persecuted. There is no respecter of persons and persecution is a part of our life. All who live godly will suffer persecution, and we've been spared in America, but things already are turning against us. No, you know what? For us, that's really a better way to say it.

They're against us in the natural but who cares the natural? Think what God will do with it for our lives. What glory it will bring, the power it will bring," Hinn said.


In 2015, Hinn was hospitalized with atrial fibrillation, an issue he said he has been dealing with for more than 20 years.


According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which refers to a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. This can result in the heart beating too fast, too slow or just irregularly altogether. If the problem goes unnoticed, it, unfortunately, can lead to increased risk of stroke, chest pain or heart failure.
