its compulsory because its a private uni, am sure the op knows this. If it were to be a federal sch than the OP might have a case, because there are no rules or decipline what so ever, if you like attend, if you like don't. And in my opinion, its better not to even attend any program at all than leaving b4 the end. It doesn't just make sense

PS* There are rules and regulations in federal schools as well, and some level of discipline, just a little more freedom* If you were one of the parents and had a flight to catch or some other pressing issues to attend to, would you have stayed? If all the parents had left, who would the school punish? Call it rude but I like the fact that the graduating students bruised the school's ego by walking out on a meaningless program.
