The Nigerian senate on Thursday prescribed a
minimum of seven-years imprisonment as punishment
for perpetrators of cyber crimes and online fraud,
popularly known as ‘yahoo yahoo’ in Nigeria.

It would be recalled that the bill on cyber crimes was
sponsored by Senator Adegbenga Kaka, and the
decision of the senate on the cybercrime bill was based
on the recommendation of the Senate Committee on
Judiciary and Human Rights.

The bill, tagged: “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the
Prohibition, Prevention, Detection, Response,
Investigation and Prosecution of Cybercrimes and for
Other Related Matters 2014,” seeks to punish the
interception of data, system interference, misuse of
devices, amongst others.

The bill also seeks to punish all kinds of computer-
related fraud, computer-related forgery, offences
relating to pornography, cyber-stalking and cyber-
squatting.

It also seeks to promote cyber security, protection of
computer systems and networks, electronic
communications, data and computer programmes,
intellectual property and privacy rights.

According to the bill, anyone who commits fraud using
a computer system or network with the intention of
obtaining computer data, securing access to any
programme, commercial or industrial secrets or
classified information will upon conviction be
sentenced to seven years jail term or a fine of N7
million or both.

Also, anyone found guilty of possessing a manipulative
device, unauthorised automatic teller machine card,
damaging a computer with the intention to defraud,
trafficking in any password to defraud customers or
financial institutions will be sentenced to seven years
imprisonment or pay a N7 million fine.

7 years is too short. 15years is ok.
They should mandate the EFCC, ICPC and the Police to have an online fraud department(strictly for online fraud, even if it's 1k wink) and banks to provide details of these scammers once there's enough proof to nail them. Catching these thieves shouldn't be rocket science

Good development. But how many years jail term for corrupt politicians and public officials? May be 20 years to life imprisonment.
