I am Mercy Johnson, an actress. I was born 29 years ago and I am the fourth child in a family of seven. My father is an ex-military officer and I left my mother at the age of two to live with him. Due to the nature of his job, he was constantly transferred from one station to another. I am proud of him because he taught me all I needed to know from childhood to adulthood.

Movie industry

I have grown with time and there have been good and bad times. There have been rumours and scandals. Sometimes, when I cry in movies, it wasn't the script that made me cry. Rather, I reflect on my humble beginning and the height I've attained now. This makes me cry.

Journey into acting

After my secondary school education, I approached a friend for assistance to feature in a movie. He took me to the National Theatre, Lagos, but a role did not come until a year later. My first lead role was in a film titled, 'The Maid.' It was quite challenging to interprete because it was my first movie. When I saw the veterans on set, I fidgeted.

A star actress

Life is in phases and I cannot say I have reached the peak of my profession. I have not even won an Oscar yet! There is always a higher mountain to climb, a new vision to fulfill and I am at that point. I want to achieve new and greater dreams.

Fulfillment

The greatest fulfillment is the ability to influence people positively through my acting.

Challenges

Life is not a bed of roses; it comes with challenges which make me stronger and who I am.

Nollywood: Then and now

We have achieved feats which the old Nollywood did not achieve. It is all about progression and I am sure that in the future, Nollywood will achieve a greater feat than it is doing currently.

Relationship

My husband is loving and he is an understanding man. I am so happy to be married to him. I acted a movie, 'Baby Oku in America' when I was heavily pregnant and he didn't feel bad about it. He understands that I am an actor and sometimes, we need real life situations, like the pregnancy, to interpret a role. Not many men would allow their wife do that.

Scandals

They are all lies. I just think the media needs to do their verification well before they put any story out. Whenever I read all manner of lies about me in the media, I wonder where all of these came from and regret being an actor. But in all, I move on and take it as one of the hazards of the job. I am fulfilled as an actor.

Mercy Johnson Foundation

I floated the foundation because of my love for the less privileged. One of my greatest joys is to see other people happy. I want to make lasting impact in my society. The objective is to identify the needs of the less privilege, evaluate them and help in our own little way. I strongly believe that as movie stars, we should live beyond the euphoria of stardom.

A sexy woman

It is inbuilt. It's just how you feel about yourself. For me, being sexy is confidence. It mustn't be about the hairstyle or the accessories or the big buttocks. It's about you, liking yourself just the way you are.

Motherhood

My husband is a wonderful man. He makes my job easier and helps carry our daughter, Purity. He feeds her and she misses him whenever he is not around. As a family, we understand one another and we make whatever adjustments we have to make in order to have a good home.

Success

The challenges I faced have yielded results and I am reaping the fruits of all my efforts. I have grown from nobody in the industry to becoming a top actress from Africa. To God be all the glory.

To be an actress

Talent is never enough you must constantly brush up your talent but training can come in different form. You only need to ensure that in whatever form, you are not just relying on your inborn talent.

Projects

There are many but I'm not permitted to disclose them yet. They will start unfolding soon.

Fear

My worst fear will be to leave this earth without making a huge impact.

Fashion

I don't wear what is in vogue or what everybody is wearing, I just wear what suits me and I'm lucky to have a physique that encourages everything I wear. My husband is a huge critic, so when he pays compliments to my dressing, I feel so good. He doesn't believe that exposing anything makes you look better. He feels when you cover up, you look real nice.

To upcoming actors

Be yourself and let your talent speak for you. Don't come into the industry because you want to be famous, but because you love the art of acting. Then try to appreciate those who were there before you.

An internal memo of the recently established federal university of Otuoke, Bayelsa state, has revealed that the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) might have reached an agreement which would see the labour union calling off its strike before the end of this week.

The memo which was signed by the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, stated that the deal was reached following the intervention of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU).

The government side was led during the two meetings on Thursday 19th Sept 2013 and Friday 11th Oct 2013 by vice president Namadi Sambo while ASUU was led by its president, Dr. N. Faggae.

Among the agreements reached was that the contentious earned allowances which the union has been demanding for, will be jacked from the current N30bn which the FG is offering to N40bn. The N40bn will further be topped some more after it has been fully disbursed.

The FG stated that the two parties will sign an agreement which will list the issues and the consensus reached.

Vice President Sambo appealed to ASUU to accept this package and call off the strike, also apologising for the “take-it-or-leave-it” comment made by finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. On his part, Faggae thanked the vice president for stepping in and promised to consult with his constituence.

AN UPDATE ON ONGOING ASUU NEGOTIATIONS FOLLOWING TWO RECENT MEETINGS WITH VICE-PRESIDENT NAMADI SAMBO

From the Office of the Vice-Chancellor

Following two meetings (on Thursday 19th Sept 2013 and Friday 11th Oct 2013) of representatives of the AVCNU (Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by CVC Chairman, Prof. Hamisu of ATBU) and ASUU Representatives (led by its President, Dr. N. Fagge) with the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. N. Sambo, Minister of Education Barr. N. Wike and others, all Vice-Chancellors have been urged to inform and enlighten our academic and other staff on the following developments so that we can ensure a return to normalcy in our universities within the shortest possible time

1. Earned Allowances: The N30 billion already released will now be increased to N40 billion, and should be regarded only as first installment, and not a once-and-for-all payment. Government will top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of this new figure of N40 million, so Vice-Chancellors are urged to expedite this disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the CVC.

2. NEEDS Assessment Capital Money: Government was cognizant and mindful of the ability of Universities to effectively/efficiently utilize the N100 billion fund immediately, hence that figure. However, in addition to this N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013, N200 billion (increased from N150 billion previously agreed) will now be earmarked in the 2014 Budget as well as each of the following three-four years until the Universities are brought to world-class standard.

3. Project Prioritization: Universities will now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be “rail-roaded” into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to be centralized.

4. TETFund Intervention: Government assured that the operations of the TETFund will not be impaired, and that the regular TETFund intervention disbursement to Universities will continue, unaffected. So the NEEDS assessment capital outlays are in addition to regular TETFund intervention.

5. Project Monitoring: A new Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the NEEDS Assessment intervention for universities has been set up to take over from the Suswan Committee. The new one is under the Federal Ministry of Education and chaired by the Honorable Minister of Education. In addition, to build confidence and ensure faithful implementation and prevent any relapse as before, the Vice President will meet quarterly with the IMC to monitor progress.

6. Blueprint: ASUU was mandated to submit a blue print for revitalizing the Universities to the Vice President.

7. Official Agreement Document: A signed document would be issued very soon to itemize the full issues on which this present consensus outlined here, brokered by AVCNU, has been reached.

8. An Appeal to Call Off Strike: The Vice-President Sambo appealed to ASUU to call off the strike and apologized for the “take-it-or-leave-it” comments credited to the Hon Minister of Finance. All other parties present at the meetings also prevailed on the ASUU leadership to consult objectively with its members to get them to agree with what is now on the table and to call off the strike as soon as possible after the Sallah break of Tuesday/Wednesday October 15/16 2013.

9. ASUU President Responds: At both meetings, the President of ASUU thanked the VP for taking over negotiations and promised to consult with his ASUU Constituency.

We keep our fingers firmly crossed, as we await both the official consensus agreement document and full ASUU reaction. Statesmanship on all sides is called for at this point in time.

Kim Kardashian's engagement ring from ex-husband Kris Humphries has been sold at auction for $620, 000. The ring which Kim paid for herself, but weirdly returned to Kris after she broke up with him was sold today Tuesday October 15th at a Christie's auction in NYC, Us Weekly reports.

The unknown buyer bought the Lorraine Schwartz creation, which features a 16.21-carat center diamond and two 1.8-carat side diamonds for a total of $749,000, which is plus tax.

The amount is a significant drop from the ring's initial reported worth of $2 million.

"Kim has been waiting for the day he would auction it. Everyone always asked what Kim did with the ring - she silently gave it back over a year ago! And Kris waited until the divorce was final to sell it." a source told Us Weekly

"The ring is definitely not worth $2 million, not even half of that," sniffs the source. Indeed, Kardashian, not Humphries, initially paid for the ring herself.

Several reports and sources suggest former label mates - Dapo 'D'banj' Oyebanjo and Oluwatobi 'Wande' Ojosipe have already fathered their first children respectively.

The blog suggested D'banj welcomed his first child with an unidentified woman sometime ago; citing five women as potential baby mamas on the story's leading photo. P

hotos of Nadia Buari and Genevieve Nnaji (both rumoured to have dated D'banj) and three other women were inserted into the picture, with the author asking readers to guess who the baby mama is.

NET has not been able to confirm the authenticity of the news. We however learnt that the report might be tied to D'banj former label partner Don Jazzy. Interestingly, sources tell us Truspot's Ike Orizu who's Don Jazzy's friend founded Famzin.com about two months ago. We are told D'banj and his team aren't happy with the story and the authors too.

'Everybody has got their sources that's all I can say. You should ask D'banj and find out what he'd say to you', Orizu told NET when we reached him on telephone.

A rep for the Pop star however denies the news. 'It's a lie', a young man who represented D'banj's manager Tony Nwakolor told our reporter over the telephone. When NET eventually confronted D'banj for a confirmation or denial, after joking for a while, the pop star finally answered, 'I do not have a child, so it is capital NO'.

Meanwhile Wande Coal, sources squeal to us, allegedly welcomed his first child five years ago but has managed to the news under wraps.

The birth of his supposed child would fall around the same period when the talented Pop artiste released his critically acclaimed debut album 'Mushin 2 Mohits'. 'Wande has a five year old boy but only close friends and family know', a source who is close to the singer but would rather remain anonymous tells NET. The identity of the child (suspected to be a boy) and baby mama have not been revealed.

In October 2012, Wande Coal relocated from his rented flat at 1004 apartments to a rented house in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi. It is unclear if his 'family' resides there with him. Wande's manager Nana Abbey could not be reached as he did not answer his phone calls nor respond to text messages concerning the matter. Interestingly, the only comment posted on the 'D'banj baby mama' story published on Famzin.com claims Wande Coal fathered his child with D'banj mother's former house help five years ago. This is also not confirmed.

Wande Coal is currently in New York. The singer who recently parted ways with his former label Mavin Records performed at the Independence Day Parade.

Sir Alex retired at the end of last season after 26 years in charge that saw him become the most successful British manager of all-time. To honour him, former Waters Reach, a road that runs alongside United's stadium has been renamed Six Alex Ferguson Way.

Nollywood Movies Awards, 2013 edition went down successfully, at the newly launched Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos, with the movie 'Phone swap' bagging the highest number of awards.

In an interview with Punch's Jayne Aguoye, Dapo Oyebanji, aka D’banj, speaks with about his career and relationship with the popular Nollywood actress. Its clear he is still in love with her as he talked about his plan for Hollywood in a movie called Banga Lee staring Genevieve Nnaji.

Genevieve had played a role in his success.

“Apart from the fact that she is my friend, she has been a part of my success. There is no way you are going to tell my story that Genevieve’s name will not come up because she featured in my biggest song of all time, Fall in Love. So if E True Story comes to Nigeria to interview me, she will definitely be called upon to tell my story, I would love to have Genevieve as my wife. We never can tell what God plans for us in the future. I have studied her and I realised that anyone that has her as his woman has found himself a treasure. Just like the Bible says, any man who finds a wife, finds a good thing.”

He plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his music career anytime in 2014.

“So much has happened in the last 18 months and I am very thankful to God. By the Grace of God, I have remained relevant for nearly a decade in the music industry and I have released hit songs every year. Also, I am glad that I have been chosen to headline the Hennessy Artistry this year. This is one brand that understands the importance of aligning with the entertainment industry.

“My career is barely 10 years old. But with the success I have achieved so far, it feels like three decades already. Within my first 10 years as a musician, I have recorded the biggest song and shot the most viewed music video of all time, ‘Oliver Twist’. I must say I am humbled and getting ready to take over,”



On Don Jazzy playing a big part in his success

“If I say I don’t miss Don Jazzy, I am lying. I have spent the better part of my career with him. I was married to him in a way (laughs). So I miss everything about Mo’Hits: the family, the movement, and the vibe of being in the studio with him. I miss the jokes and the arguments, but I have since keyed into the notion that nothing can stop a moving train.

“Nevertheless we can always do music together. The track, ‘Top of the World’ was produced by a Grammy Award Winner. The songs ‘Finally’ and ‘Don’t Tell Me Nonsense’ was produced by my producer while ‘Oliver Twist’ was produced by Don Jazzy. So, why won’t I have him on my 10 years anniversary album?

“I have never said I am a musician; I am an entertainer. Some people say I can pick up a microphone and become a comedian. Therefore nobody should come and ask if I want to go into acting because they should know I am already an actor. It depends on when the right script and concept lands in my hands.

“For now, I am concerned about achieving new things and breaking new grounds. By the time I enter Hollywood, I believe that I’ll become as successful as I have been as a singer. The movie titled ‘I am Banga Lee’, starring Genevieve, to be released in 2014, won’t be a bad idea,”

“The Hennessey Artistry Tour afforded me the opportunity to meet my fans here in Nigeria. I have not travelled across the country in a long while because I am abroad all the time. The singing and dancing duo, Peter and Paul Okoye, are unarguably the richest in the entertainment industry. They won the KORA award for Best Africa Artiste 2010 and the award came with $1m (N156m). Shortly after that they landed an endorsement deal with Globacom telecommunications worth about N240m for four years. As if that wasn’t enough, they had one of their greatest international gigs and an American tour of seven cities, which earned them a whopping $1m (N156m).

The duo built two houses within six months valued at N300m in the same neighbourhood and named it Squareville. They in addition own a hotel and two multi-million naira factories in Jos among other investments. The bulk of their earnings come from concerts and endorsements. The duo has sold above 14 million copies of their CDs since 2005.

Peter and Paul Okoye, who together form one of the biggest pop bands in Africa, recently also, confirmed that they have acquired a home in the city of San Francisco, Northern California.

D’banj:
Popularly known as the ‘Kokomaster’ or Mr. Endowed, Dbanj is one artiste that has got the penchant for making money. He certainly has very strong passion for business because Apart from music, Mr. Endowed has other businesses, which include the Koko Mansion, a TV reality show; Koko Lounge, an upscale hangout in Lagos and UK; Koko Foundation, a charitable organization and the recently-launched Koko Mobile, under his label Koko.

D’Banj once said, “I work hard so that money, awards, endorsements, bookings and kokolets chase me.” He is presently the owner of (DKM) records, where Davido is signed.

Tuface
Innocent Idibia, popularly known as Tuface, who was once a member of the band, Plantashun Boyz, is believed to be one of the richest entertainers in Nigeria. He has two platinum records in his kitty and it is been speculated that he is worth over N1 billion.

This is by no means a surprise as he has had endorsement deals with brands like Guinness, from which he earned N20m and also Airtel, which earned him N22m in 2012. He was also said to have earned N30m from the producers of Phat Girls movie, and charges between N4m and N5m per show. The artiste has invested heavily in real estate and stocks, where he earns big bucks. He once said he was set to recover all the wealth taken from Africa.

Don Jazzy:

Michael Enebeli, also known as Don Jazzy, co-founder of Mo’Hits (now owner of Marvin Records) is reputed to be one of the best and most sought after producers in the showbiz world.

At age five, Don Jazzy already had eyes for the microphone as he was always in the studio. He was a member of Good Morning Kids, a group created by his father. Don Jazzy is also known for his business dexterity.

Genevieve:
She started her acting career as a child actress in the then-popular television soap opera “Ripples” at the age of 8. She was also featured in several commercials, some of which included Pronto beverage and Omo detergent. In 1998, at the age of 19, she made her debut in the growing Nigerian film industry with the movie “Most Wanted.” As an upcoming actress, trying to carve a niche for herself, she went through various minor roles before her big break.

In 2002, she starred in the movie “Sharon Stone”, and her fame shot beyond the shores of Nigeria to the rest of Africa and several European countries. One can say that through the buzz, Genevieve reinvented the Nigerian film Industry, introducing Nollywood to the rest of the world.

But with fame comes wealth, she has accumulated lots of money throughout her career. At the moment, she earns no less than 1.4 million naira per movie. Her endorsement with Lux and many other multinational companies makes her arguably, the richest actress in Nigeria.

BasketMouth:
He is arguably one of the brightest entertainers that has come out of the comedy industry following his multi million naira deal with Globacom which has put him ahead of his contemporaries, Basketmouth has reached the peak of his career and has subsequently been an anchor on MTV where he features celebrities on his show.

These days to have Basketmouth anchor your event and perform for about 30-45 minutes, you will have to pay at least a million naira and he anchors at least two events per week. He is definitely the biggest earner in the comedy industry.

Omotola Jalade: Ekeinde

She has also built a formidable music career that takes most of time, apart from the new reality TV show she just debuted.

Ini Edo:

Ini Edo began her film career in 2000, and has featured in more than 50 movies since. She has also gotten an endorsement with Glo as an ambassador which churned in millions of naira. She has also received various endorsements with reputable companies, among which is a deal with Noble Hair worth N40million. She is currently a producer and director.

Banky W:
Also known as Mr. Capable, Banky W has proved to Nigerians that he is capable of being among the richest entertainers in the industry.
