AN octogenerian, Anna Ode, winner of Miss Nigeria contest in 1965, has advocated for investment in pageantry as a form of economic empowerment for the less privilege in the society. The former beauty queen stated this on Sunday in Uhonmora-Ora, near Sabongida-Ora in Owan West Local Government area of Edo during the maiden edition of the Mr and Miss Owan Cultural Ambassadors contest. Ode further noted that beauty contests can be used to promote cultural understanding and exchange, as well as fostering global connections and opportunities. While recalling that opportunities from pageantry lifted many indigent individuals in the past, she emphasised that she became what she is today through pageantry. Ode, however, stressed the need for mentorship to enable the younger generation see the inherent opportunities in pageantry. "Winners often receive scholarships, cash prizes, and sponsorship deals, which can be a life-changing opportunity for individuals from low-income backgrounds. "It can be used as a vehicle to correct some of the ills in the society today. "Pageants provide a platform for contestants to raise awareness about social issues, such as education, health, and women's rights, which can lead to positive change. "Some pageant organizations invest in community development projects, such as building schools, hospitals, and providing disaster relief," she explained. She concluded calling for support from individuals and organizations to make more investment in pageantry. The former beauty queen was honored during the Mr and Miss Cultural Ambassadors for placing the Owan nation in global map 61 years ago. According to the organiser, Mr Chris Ojo, the decision to give recognition to the former beauty Queen is borne out of the desire to celebrate her while she is still alive. He added that Ode has devoted her life to assisting the needy, especially the widows within her immediate community and beyond. Ojo said that this act of benevolent was what Ode had carried from her days as Miss Nigeria to date. “We want to be able to celebrate her and also to encourage others who may be nursing ambition in the same area. “The truth is that Anna Ode, nee Eboweime, has had a huge influence on our people as a former Miss Nigeria; her name rings a bell, even among the Gen Zs,” Ojo said. Also speaking, Mr Desmond Alufokhai, first son of the former beauty queen, commended the organiser for the recognition given to his mother and pledged future support for the Owan Cultural Ambassadors contest. Meanwhile, Abigail Ojeikere, who won the maiden editon of Miss Owan Cultural Ambassador, said she got the aspiration from the fact that the former beauty queen would be on ground. The Ijaw communities in Edo have berated the lawmaker representing Ovia Federal Constituency, Ms Omosede Igbinedion (APC - Edo) for opposing the creation of Toru-Ibe State. This is contained in a statement on Monday in Calabar by the Izon-Ibe Dragnet, a Socio-cultural organisation. Bandua Itebetebe, Spokesperson for the organisation noted that creation of Toru-Ibe state would address the long-term neglect and marginalisation of Ijaws in Edo. He warned that the organisation would not hesitate to treat the lawmaker as an outcast in Ijaw land, if she continues to oppose everything that would bring development to the people. "In spite of the lawmaker's opposition to the Ijaws, we have always supported all her political trajectory. "It is therefore surprising to see the lawmaker raise a motion at the floor of the Green Chamber advising against support for the creation of Toru-Ibe state. "This motion is seen as a betrayal of the trust reposed in her by the Ijaw people of Ovia Northeast/Ovia Southwest Federal Constituency. "The proposed Toru-Ibe state is a legitimate demand of the Ijaw people, aimed at addressing the long-standing marginalisation and underdevelopment of the region. "Omosede Igbinedion's claim that the creation of the state will threaten the territorial integrity of Edo is baseless and unfounded," he said. The Izon-Ibe Dragnet spokesperson also advised the lawmaker to channel her energy towards delivering the dividends of democracy to her constituents. According to him, Ovia federal constituency is currently facing severe challenges of insecurity, killings, and kidnapping. "One would expect that as a representative, addressing the challenges should be a priority to her, rather than presenting an unintelligent presentation without empirical and historical evidence to back her motion in the floor of the House." Itebetebe therefore urged the National Assembly to reject the lawmaker's motion and allow the democratic process to unfold. "The creation of Toru-Ibe state is a matter of national importance, and it is imperative that the voices of the Ijaw people are heard and respected," added.

In 2021, Federal Government approved the sum of N185 billion for the reconstruction and dualisation of the Calabar-Itu highway. The announcement was received with excitement by the people, especially the regular users of road. The Calabar-Itu highway is the only link road between Cross River and its neighboring state, Akwa Ibom; its economic importance is undoubtedly, invaluable. Worryingly, the road is still in a terrible state of disrepair four years after the contract was awarded–causing great concerns to road users. Commuters lament that a journey of less than two hours takes almost forever. Several lives and property have been lost on the collapsed highway that has also become a den for armed robbers as well as kidnappers. The increasingly parlous state of the road has posed a grave challenge to commuters between both states in spite of yearly assurances of intervention by the government. Within the period under review, accidents have claimed many lives on the Calabar-Itu road constructed in the 70s and the only road linking Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Weighing in on the situation, Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River said that the economy of the state had been adversely affected by the deplorable road. Otu fingered “economic saboteurs” as to the reason why the Calabar-Itu road had not received the desired attention. According to him, the problem of that road is bigger than the state. “There is nothing I have not done to see that the road is fixed; I accepted to pay compensation amidst the state scares resources. “I see that a lot of persons do not want that road done; we are however not going to rest until something concrete is done on that road. “If not for the several intervention we have done on that road, it would have been completely impassable,” he said. In addition, the Cross River South Consultative Forum (CRSCF) described the deplorable state of the Calabar-Itu federal highway as a death trap to road users. Presenting the position of the forum, its Chairman, Eyo Nsa Ekpo, recounted the ordeal the people of both Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. “What was once a vital trade route is now a gauntlet of potholes, eroded sections, and collapsed portions, turning journeys that should take minutes into hours-long ordeals. “The rainy season has transformed the highway into a muddy quagmire, rendering stretches of it completely impassable. “Commuters face agonising delays, transporters grapple with vehicle breakdowns and lost revenue, and accidents, often fatal, have become tragically commonplace.’’ He said that businesses were collapsing under the weight of increased transportation costs. According to him, farmers struggle to get their produce to market, and essential services are disrupted. “The economic fallout is severe, but the human cost is even greater. Sick individuals, pregnant women, and accident victims endure unimaginable suffering as they try to access medical care. “The road’s perilous state has also emboldened criminals, who prey on stranded motorists,” he said. More so, an articulated vehicle driver, Adamu Umar, described the road as a nightmare for motorists. He said that the poor state of the road had made motorists regular visitors at mechanics workshop in addition to the daily mishap on the route. Worthy of recall, the approval by former President Muhammadu Buhari led administration was to reconstruct and dualised the highway through the tax credit scheme. The scheme was to cost the then Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) N185 billion for the construction and dualisation of the Calabar-Itu highway. The amount was part of the N600bn raised through the tax credit scheme by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to fund critical infrastructure across the country. Sen. Ita Enang, erstwhile Senior Special Assistant to President on Niger Delta Affairs, had reaffirmed the desire of the administration to put an end to commuters suffering on that road. He explained that the project was awarded in three phases: Julius Berger received N54 billion; the Chinese Civil Engineering and Construction Company was awarded N52 billion, while SEMATECH got N79bn for road construction and the building of four bridges. He said that the construction had commenced on the axis between Odukpani in Cross River State and Ibiono in Akwa Ibom. Enang attributed the delay in the construction of the road to lack of funds. He had assured that with the funds readily available, the project would be completed with dualised carriage by April 2023. “We have been having problems getting funding for the road, but the president has asked me to assure you that we raised money from the tax credit window from Federal Inland Revenue Service to the NNPC to fund critical infrastructure. “Out of the over N600billion raised from NNPC as tax credit, a great part that is N185 billion has been dedicated to this road; the road was awarded in three tranches. “The first money that was available was N54 billion and was for Julius Berger, N52 billion to CCECC and the last N79 billion to SEMATECH engineering. “This road was designed for dualisation since 1972 and only one lane of the four lanes was constructed believing that others would be constructed since then. “Thank God, Buhari has started constructing other lanes with four bridges, and he has promised to complete it within the time frame,” Enang said. He urged the people to be patient and cooperative with contractors handling the project. Four years down the lane, it seems there is no respite for the road users whose hopes were raised with the announcement. With only some sessions of the roads completed by the various contractors handling the project, there has been no reduction on the number of carnage on the road, while commuters still bear the unending hours of commuting between the two states of Cross River and Akwa Ibom. The present administration has also given the same assurance of completing the reconstruction and dualisation work. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, who gave the assurance, warned contractors like SEMATECH to accelerate their work or face contract termination. He attributed the issue of funding and timely payment to contractors as some of the reasons affecting the pace of work. Umahi also said factors like the rainy season had worsened the road conditions, making it almost impassable in some areas. He said squatters along the highway corridor posed another challenge, with the government set to dislodge them for the project’s completion “President Bola Tinubu’s administration has expressed commitment to improving Nigeria’s infrastructure, including the Calabar-Itu road. “The government aim to enhance connectivity across the country through projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and others,’’ he said. Worthy of note, Otu has approved N400 million to settle compensation issues on the Cross River side of the highway to pave way for seamless construction work by the contractors handling the project. Moreover, a group, under the aegis of Who is Who Forum in Northern Cross River, has called on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to take drastic action to prevent the same from being cut-off from the rest of the country. Dormkclaimz Enamhe, Convener, and Johnny Again, Co-Convener, called on the Federal Government to curb the unending carnage on the Calabar-Itu road. The group said that the government needed to ensure timely completion of the reconstruction project. “This can be achieved by providing adequate funding and ensuring timely payment to contractors accelerating the pace of work and addressing environmental challenges. “The government should also dislodge squatters along the highway corridor to facilitate project completion, and improving road maintenance and infrastructure to prevent future deterioration. “By addressing these challenges and ensuring the project’s timely completion, the government can reduce the risk of accidents and improve the quality of life for commuters and residents in the region,” he said. Going by its strategic importance, stakeholders say the Calabar-Itu highway, which links two oil producing states of Cross River and Akwa Ibom, deserves serious attention in order to avoid further loss of lives.(NANfeatures) |

"So, part of our core responsibility as a company is to look for those sort of companies that are viable enough, provide the funds for them, and connect them to the right mentors. "We also create a synergy in such a way that company A needs the service of company B, they don't need to look too far," Obidi explained. Obidi said that the company's target is for SMEs requiring between ₦50,000 and ₦3 million in capital, particularly those in informal sectors such as roadside trading, agriculture, and tech. He further explained that Stridevest will also assist these SMEs with business registration, financial management, and scaling strategies. According to him, "Applicants must undergo a rigorous vetting process, including detailed business assessments. "While there is no fixed equity percentage, negotiations will determine stakes based on investment size and business potential. "Registration will be conducted online, with field agents assisting less tech-savvy applicants. "Stridevest also plans immediate empowerment grants for select small businesses as part of its launch initiatives. "Stridevest’s team comprises professionals across finance, law, engineering, and tech to ensure informed investment decisions. The company collaborates with industry experts to evaluate proposals thoroughly. "We are committed to long-term partnerships, not quick fixes, Our goal is to reduce unemployment by empowering SMEs that create jobs and sustain economic growth." Sen. Williams Eteng (APC - Cross River) has been advised to eniste equitable distribution of constituency projects by his constituents, who also pledged to support his reelection bid in 2027. While commending his effective representation at the red chamber, the stakeholders, especially drawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC), however, expressed worry over the distribution of his constituency projects. The stakeholders, made up of party chieftains from across the 32 wards in the central senatorial districts of Cross River, made this known at a strategic meeting held at Etung local government area on Saturday. They called on Eteng to give sense of belonging to every part of the district by ensuring that every ward and unit benefits from the dividends of democracy through equitable distribution of his projects. They also unanimously agreed that Eteng should step his game, promising to give him total support for equity, fairness, and unity of central senatorial district. The stakeholders also acknowledged that central senatorial district remains the heartbeat of the APC in the state and, therefore, there is an urgent need to integrate the district in the scheme of things. Speaking separately on behalf of Etung stakeholders, Mr Bisong Achon, former House of Assembly member, and Dr Inok Ebak, former Etung Council chairman, commended the senator for deeming it fit to call for this kind of strategic stakeholders meeting. They further advised him to work with the right stakeholders and try to be more responsive to constituents to give them that sense of belonging, promising to work with him for his second coming. Speaking on behalf of Ikom local government stakeholders, Francis Ndifon, President General Ekpeche Nkome, Paul Ogar, and Moses Edim advised him to attend social gatherings and mix with people at the nick of time. According to them, "all the constituents can not come to Abuja, but once the Senator picks their calls, everything will be taken care of." They stated that Ikom people have enough capacity to galvanise and work for him ahead of 2027 but need to work together in execution of projects and empowerment programmes to integrate the constituents. Maintaining that the meeting is very imperative, they appealed to Eteng to work on the security situation in the district to avoid repeat of Benue and Plateau mayhem as their forests are occupied by Fulani miners and herders. They equally called on the Senator to use his good position to attract some youth skills acquisition and training programmes to reduce the increasing youth employment problem. On their part, Boki local government spokesperson, Dr Chris Bisong, and chief Agbor Edun, said there is need for political dividends to get across to all constituents. They expressed gratitude that Senator Eteng came down in person to dialogue, interact and celebrate with the people during the Easter season. The Boki leaders also advised the Senator to prioritise his projects and fraternise with the people so as to know their problem and challenges. Speaking on behalf of the women group, Abu Rita Obi, from Alankwu ward in Boki, said that the women should be carried along as they also worked assiduously for the Senator's emergence. Commending the stakeholders for their frankness, the lawmaker representing Yakurr 1 in the state Assembly, Cyril Omin said more of such engagement will be organised for better understanding and support According to him, "We in Yakurr are not ready to lose our Senator nor ready to fail. If he fails, Yakurr nation has failed. The devil we know is better than that Angel you think you know. "Eteng is just about two years in office even as about six months were lost to court cases. We need to manage what we have as long as that person is willing to change. " Eteng helps but does not believe in singing his praises. Our Senator has done fairly well compared to his years in the Senate. "Central cannot be destabilised. The Senator may not have been visible but let the liaison officers be alive to their responsibilities by following up with calls and requests for assistance." He called on all stakeholders present to give him a chance and work with him for a better central, advising them to also sacrifice for a better society. On his part, Chief Ebuta Ayuk, an APC chieftain, said: "Everybody has spoken well and what transpired here today is a demonstration of true democracy because people have expressed their feelings. "Politics is a game that you tell people how you feel. I commend everybody who have spoken and we can understand their feelings. "We will continue to learn in this game. The central speaks in one voice and we are the strength of APC in the state. "If the central has a crack, the state has a crack. But let us not compromise what God has given to us freely. Enemies can come from anywhere, but please let us be frank with other leaders who are not here. We must be ready to cause the integration we want. "From today, everything old has passed away. We are going to have a brand new Senator Eteng Jones from now onwards. "Try and be on the same page with everybody working with you. It is our duty to protect and stand by him no matter what," he stated. Responding, Senator Williams, said: "Everybody has spoken. I have heard the advice and will return and have our inner meetings to start work. "We will get down to work with my people and will correct all issues raised. I will step up my game. I am one of you. Let us work as central and move forward. "This meeting shall be quarterly so that we can rub minds. You have sacrificed to be here for central to move forward. In the spirit of Easter, I have mobilised a contractor to build a toilet for the police station at Ikom. "I have visited the Holy Family Hospital Ikom, and paid hospital bills of over N3m to sone patients who could not afford it. All these are in the spirit of the celebration."

. February 7, 2025 PREES STATEMENT THE SPECIAL ADVISER TO HE GOVERNOR BASSEY OTU, MR. GODWIN AKAPMA, SHOULD WORK WITHIN THE TENETS OF HIS OFFICE WE have watched with keen interest how ths Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, Mr. Godwin Akpama, has been conducting affairs and developments in his office since he was appointed. His actions and inactions are suggestive of the fact that Mr Akpama does not quite understand his duties and responsibilities as he seems to be still basking in the euphoria of his office. Or simply put, he seems not to be in tune with the demands of office. Or perhaps, he sees himself as the first among equals as he goes about his duties with much arrogance to depict he is above even the man who appointed him. Therefore, one would want to ask if he was not handed over terms of reference so that he knows his bounds while carrying out his intelligence work. It needs be pointed out here that the Office of Special Adviser to the Governor on Intelligence demands enough capacity, knowledge of local security and huge responsibility from the occupier of such exalted post. In other words, the occupant should be a person that posseses some modicum of integrity, respect and security training to be able to engage in such a huge task of intelligence gathering and passing it across to appropriate quarters for processing and necessary action. But from all intents and purposes, Mr. Godwin Akpama, the Special Adviser on Intelligence is not only a misfit, but a square peg in a round hole. Akpama knows next to nothing with regard to intelligence gathering. He lacks the common intelligence on how to handle and process information for the benefit of his principal who needs it to tackle some security challenges in the state. Rather, Mr. Godwin Akpama sees the office as an avenue to witchhaunt his political colleagues, perceived opponents, especially those from his constituency, blackmail and extort money from his fellow appointees who run into trouble waters. He further sees the position as avenue to seek gratifications from the highly placed individuals in the society under the pretence of covering them up in the so-called reports he claims to write to the Governor. Besides, Akpama has engaged in so much name dropping in almost all the intelligence he goes about gathering that people begin to wonder what manner of SA he is. At Evey opportunity he has, he drops His Excellency's name and uses it to his greatest advantage. Evidence abound during the last local government elections in which Akpama went about collecting money from aspirants in the guise of writing positive intelligence reports on them to the Governor. He told some of them that 'Oga' has directed him to do so and a few gullible ones fell for it and only later discovered that they were scammed as HE never gave such directive. Again, Akpama goes about obtaining documents from ministries, agencies and department regarding their financial transactions or contracts awarded and use it against those involved in such transactions in the guise of the Governor sent him. Sometimes, some fall into his trap and they settle him while a few tell him off. And once you tell him off, blackmail starts and he leaks the information to gullible members of the public and to his allies in the media to start a media war against you and your office. Akpama goes beyond some government ministries or departments to even some corporate bodies doing business in Cross River. A case in point is his alleged involvement with the Chinese people operating at Okuni in Ikom local government area. Some of the community leaders have accused Akpama of collaborating with the Chinese nationals and their lawyer to fight the community. They even alleged that Akpama collected huge sum of money running into millions of Naira and wrote some damming report against them. Today, the Chinese have become Akpama's ally in prosecuting any local who raises a voice against his (Akpama) pay masters. Akpama's latest antics is his direct involvement in the Ugep generators brouhaha. He has told those who cared to listen that His Excellency has mandated him to carry out a thorough investigations on the sell of the generating set even when the business was transacted before he was even appointed. Akpama goes about it with so much impunity and seems to have declared personal war against some top government officials. From Akpama's narratives, he has already found some of them guilty as charged and has embarked on his usal blackmail and extortion of money from some people allegedly involved in one way or the other. Rather than investigate and report to his principal, as he made us to understand, Akpama has become an interested party; he has become an Ombudsman of sort and he has taken over the whole matter and almost at the point of "prosecuting those he has found guilty before his illegal court." In other words, Akpama has refused to submit his findings, with regard to the Ugep generator to his principal, Governor Bassey Otu. He has taken it upon himself to harass and blackmail top government officials who are connected with the generators matter even when government sources have revealed that there is nothing untidy about the generator dealings. It was also learnt that even as government and police detectives have wade into the matter and found out that those allegedly fingered have been exonerated, Akpama is still bent on fighting and claiming he wants to expose corruption in high places. He has been of recent making a mountain of a molehill and has leaked the all documents concerning the generators to the media, which is beyond his capacity. And determined to rub some officials involved in, Akpama has engaged in war of vendetta and pull them down syndrome by brandishing the documents that he claims indicted some of them before the public and security operatives. As if that is not enough, he has now engaged in media trial after all efforts to extort money from those he allegedly found giluilty failed. Everyday, he recruits some group of journalists and gives them money to publish untrue stories about the Ugep generator saga. No wonder, we have been seeing pockets of media reports on social media regarding the issue. In the light of the above, we as concerned Cross Riverians, do hereby call Mr Godwin Akpama to stop forthwith further attacks and media propaganda on some political office holders. We advise him to concentrate on advising his principal, HE Bassey Otu, on how best to tackle security challenges and any other issues that may serve for the best interest of the state. All intelligence reports from his office should no longer be made public. We condemn intoto Akpama's style of using his office to feather his economic nest to the detriment of others. He should submit himself to the man that appointed him. Trying to lord it over other appointees or elected offcial, who he has no iota of rights above, should be stopped forthwith We, shall not hesitate to press for his removal if he continues to use his office to harrass his fellow appointees or extort money from anybody in the guise of writing whether negative or positive intelligence report. A stitch in time saves nine. Comrade Justine Asuquo Coordinator Comrade Ibor. I. Ibor Secretary Comrade Abang O.Abang Publicity Secretary.. |

The Think Cross River Initiative group has attributed Gov. Bassey Otu approachtoo security as the reason for the near zero record of cases of kidnapping in the state. The initiative further noted that the governor’s proactive approach has seem to the drastic reduction in other crimes and criminality. The group who stated whe speaking with selected journalists in Calabar on Tuesday, said the governor has provided a conducive environment for all the security agencies to operate. According to the coordinator of the Think Cross River Initiative, Mr Darlington Edem, upon assumption of office, governor Otu embarked on reconstruction of internal roads and other work in state offices of the security agencies. "He don't only stop there, he has provided other needed support these security agencies need to be proficient in their jobs. "All this he did to boost the moral of officers and men of these security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). "The emergence of governor Bassey Otu has brought peace and tranquility to the not just the state capital but the entire state. "We were all here in this state when kidnappings, arson, ritual killings and all manner of crime were being perpetuated sometimes in broad day light. "At one point, Cross River State was rated as one of the most dangerous places to visit in Nigeria. We moved from being the most peaceful state to one of the most unsafe places in Nigeria. " No one was spared, our medical doctors repeatedly kidnapped, a situation that prompted the leadership of the NMA at the time to go on strike each time one of their members were kidnapped. "Even water leaf sellers and petty traders were kidnapped and as low as five thousand was collected as ransom. Those were the issues the governor met in ground. But today, the reverse is the case," he stated. Edem who is also the deputy chief press secretary to the governor, used the opportunity to clear the air regarding the recent cancellation of a cultural parade, Nkot Mbok. Insisting that the cancellation was done in the best interest of the State. "No one in the State have access to the level of security information that the governor has. So, if intelligence gathering points to the fact that a particular event will lead to chaos were lives and properties could be lost, what a good leader and father will do is to be proactive and nip the issue in immediately. According to him, "It is my sincere opinion that the government should rather be commended. "If you look at the recently released Nigeria security report for 2024, you will realize that Cross River State made significant progress in terms of peace and security stability and that means that we are gradually taking back our place as the safest and most peaceful state in the country." |
The people of Okpella community in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo state has appealed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government of Monday Okpebholo not to legitimize Lukeman Akemokue as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella. The community noted that Akemokue was not only unqualified for the revered seat, but was forced on the community by the immediate past government of Godwin Obaseki as compensation for his infamous role in the administration. This is contained in a statement by spokesman of the community in Kano state, Mr Aigbojele Omonamo and made available to newsmen in Benin on Monday. He said the appeal became necessary in order for some aides of the Governor who are unaware of the issue surrounding the Okuokpellagbe seat. Omonamo condemned a recent writeup by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Fred Itua where he (Itua) called Akemokue as the Okuokpellagbe. The spokesman emphasised that Itua needed to be reminded that the elders and kingmakers of the community had met with the governor over the issue. "Itua and others aides to the Governor needs to desist from ascribing the revered seat of Okuokpellagbe to Lukeman Akemokue. "It is a common knowledge that he (Akemokue) was never the choice of the people, he was forced on us and against our wishe. Whom the kingmakers choose is very much known to everybody. "One of the infamous thing he did was to use thugs to chase APC supporters away during the just concluded Edo governorship election to prevent Okpebholo from winning his ward. "We are peace loving people and as such, the people have toe the line of peace, by explaining in details, the contending issues on the Okuokpellagbe seat to the Governor upon assumption of office. "One strong APC supporter by name Julius, was a victim of his onslaught where he was inflicted with injuries with machete. All these were ploy to deny Okpebholo victory in Okpella. "Yes, that was why he was presented with the staff of office just few days to the end of Obaseki's administration "The same man is now playing humility and loyalty to the person he never wanted as governor," Omonamo explained. Omonamo appealed to the public to desist from ascribing Akemokue to the Okuokpellagbe seat until the matter is settled by the Governor. |
The indigenes of Okpella in the diaspora has condemned the visit of the embattled Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, Lukman Akemokue visit to the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Ahmed Tijani Anaje to dicuss issues bordering on security of the two neighbouring communities of Edo and Kogi states. The indigenes of the solid mineral resources rich community of Edo state stressed that the Okuokpellagbe lacked the capacity to represent the people since his kingship was under contestation. Spokesman of the Okpella indigenes, Mr Martins Sadoh in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin on Tuesday, printed out that Lukman was never appointed by the people as such, cannot be their representative in any fora. He appealed to the state government led by Sen. Monday Okpebholo to take action on the recent visit of sons and daughters of the community on the kingship matter. According to report, the embattle traditional head had visited his Kogi state counterpart to discuss issues bordering on kidnappings and general insecurity in the two neighbouring communities. It was gathered that the two traditional rulers agreed that boundary monumentation project should be expedited to put a permanent end to the hostilities between the Okpellans and the Ebiras who have been coexisting as brothers from time immemorial. That two joint committees (Strategic & Religious) be set up to birth and simulate recommendations for the de-escalation of further hostilities and insecurities between the two communities. It was further learnt that it was agreed that they (Okpella and Ebira) should collaborate and synergise efforts to assist the security agencies to tackle the issues of incessant kidnapping and other criminality at the border. However, Sadoh said that Lukman lacked the locus standing to act on behalf of Okella who he forced himself on through the instrumentality of the immediate past governor of the state, Mr Godwin Obaseki. "While we hold the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland in high esteem and always ready to work with him to ensure security of lives and properties of the two border communities, we are however sorry to differ on the position of Lukman on this matter. "For one, Lukman does not have the capacity to represent us as a people since the matter of his appointment is under contest. "The fact is that he was never the choice of the Okpellans, he was forced on us as by Obaseki as a political settlement. "Giving a different scenario, we are always ready to work with our Ebira neighbours to ensure better security of our people and visitors alike. "In any case, what has Lukman get to offer since he is known for violence and the fact that his choice by Obaseko has led to the killings of innocent residents. "Our appeal is that Okpebholo act swiftly to ensure that the normalcy is restored back to Okpella," he stated. |

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, Commodore Rotimi Oderemi made the appeal during a free medical and educational rhapsody to Adiabo community in Odukpani local government area of Cross River. He said that such a gesture will give residents of these communities sense of belonging, promote their wellbeing and provide opportunities for the indigent students. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was carried out by the NNS Victory in conjunction with the Navy reference hospital, Calabar, saw the Navy distributing various medications as well as educational materials to residents. Oderemi said that the gesture was borne out of the command’s kinetic approach towards identifying with members of their host communities. He said that beyond the Nigerian navy’s constitutional role of protecting the territorial integrity of the Nation, he added that the force was bound as a responsible government agency to support the needy, especially in her areas of operation. According to him, “I am optimistic that this support will go a long way to enhance the educational pursuits of the benefiting students and also enhance the health of the people. “With this, we expect that you, students, will do better in your studies.” While noting that this will be the fourth in the series of free medical rhapsody the Navy will be conducting this year, Oderemi said that the security outfit will continue with this support. He charged security agencies to maintain and sustain the harmonious working relationship that exists among them in the state. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise involved active participation of officers, ratings, and corps members. The Nigeria Police, Department of State Security, NDLEA and others participated in the quarterly march. NAN reposts that personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps also supported the event by managing traffic flow.

Bassey BASSEY AFTER prolonged legal tussles, the Cross River State government has formerly handed over the approved layout plan of the 23 hectares of Summit Hills land to the Ntoe/ Clan Head of Nkonib (Ikot Ansa) Qua Clan, HRH Ntoe Paul Assim Ita. The handing over ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, was presided over by the Commissioner for Lands, Chief Francis Ekpenyong, and attended by other traditional leaders from Ikot Ansa. The decision of the state government is expected to put to rest the long-drawn battle on the ownership of the large expanse of land which has been the legitimate property of Nkonib (Ikot Ansa) Qua Clan. Recall that there was a consent judgement entered into by the CRSG and the community. The hand over is in compliance with the with a court-mandated land settlement agreement in which the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Cross River State, Ededem C. Ani, in a letter dated April 4, 2024, addressed to the Clan Head, Ani referenced a settlement reached in Suit No. HC/314/2021, involving Ntoe Lawrence Nyong Akiba & 7 Ors v; the Governor of Cross River State of Nigeria & 5 Ors agreed to release 23 hectares of land to the claimants. The letter reads in part: “The submitted survey plans, identified as CR/C/1187 with Tracing No. CRC.2881 and CR/C/1187 with Tracing No. CRC/2878, were provided for the Clan Head's information and necessary action. The letter, written in a formal tone, reflects the government's commitment to fulfilling its obligations as outlined in the legal settlement. This development marks a significant step towards resolving the land dispute and upholding the rule of law. “The submission of the survey plans signals progress in implementing the court's decision and demonstrates the government's adherence to judicial outcomes. It underscores the importance of legal processes in resolving land disputes and ensuring equitable access to resources. The Clan Head is expected to review the survey plans and take appropriate steps as necessary, in accordance with the terms of the settlement agreement.” Recall that Cross River state government had in 2012 acquired 369, 579 hectares of land for the purpose of Calabar International Convention Centre, golf course, CICC Hotels, International Hospitals and residential estates. Following the acquisition, THE BEAGLE NEWS gathered that government subsequently released about 29 hectares of the acquired land to the Ikot Ansa, Qua clan in 2019 in lieu of its stake in the business. This generated some controversies and litigation between the government and the host community. Subsequently, Ntoe Lawrence Nyong, Ntufam Maurice Omin Iso and Ntufam Donatus Etim (claimants) on behalf of Nkonib (Ikot Ansa Clan) instituted a case in Suit No.HC/314/2021 with Government of Cross River State, the Attorney General, Commissioner For Lands, Summit Hills Estate Development Services Ltd, Faithplant Global International Services Ltd and Incorporated Trustees of Roaches Foundation as defendants and Ntoe- Elect Ntol Paul Asim Ita, Ntoe Augustine Bassey Edem, Esinjo, Francis Ekpenyong Iso, Esinjo Vincent Ansa Itu Okon Ansa and Ntufam Felix Eyo Iso as applicants/parties seeking to be joined for themselves and on behalf of Nkonib (Ikot Ansa, Qua Clan). After hearing from both parties, they entered into consent judgement. And in the consent judgment, Justice Ebuta in 2022 ruled among others "that the state government shall release 23 hectares of prime dry upland and the 23 hectares is independent of the 29 hectares of swam and ravine land earlier released bringing to the total to 52,864 hectares acquired by the claimants and "that state government shall provide infrastructures on the 52.846 hectares of land released to the claimants community." The Court further ruled that "all private allottee of any portion of the 362.715 hectares of land remaining shall be sub-tenants of the claimants’ community at the rate of N100 per square meter yearly and renewable every year from January 1, 2022, which royalty shall be reviewed 100 percent every ten years." In compliance with the court judgment, the government through the commissioner for lands, Chief Francis Ekpenyong, issued a public notice ceding some parcels of land at the Summit Hills Estate Limited with 12.110 hectares plan no CR/C 1187 and 9.074 plan no CR/C1187 have been ceded to the Nkonib (Ikot Ansa) Qua Clan, Calabar Municipality under the leadership of His Royal Highness Ntoe Paul Asim Ita and the Ntoe-In-Council based on the agreement reached on April 4, 2024 between Commissioner for Lands, the Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice both representing Government of Cross River State and the Nkonib (Ikot Ansa) Qua Clan in the Attorney- General/Commissioner for Justice's Office to the Nkonib (Ikot Ansa) Qua Clan. Tatditinal Counncil Reacts Speaking with THE BEAGLE NEWS shortly after taking over the approved plan of 23 hectares of land at Summit Hills, the Qua clan head, Ntol Paul Asim Ita II and the Secretary, Felix Eyo, stated unequivocally that they have no face-off with Cross River state government in any way. The duo maintained that the acquisition of 369, 579 hectares of land belonging to Ikot Ansa community was in the interest of the community, commending the state government for abiding by the terms of agreement just as they stated that there is no breach of public peace in the as reported in a section of the media. According to the Qua clan head Nkonib, Ntol Paul Asim Ita II, “government has done the needful and assured that peace has returned to the community, adding that all the leaders would meet and see how everybody would carried along. “We call on all the sons and daughters of Ikot Ansa to join hands in developing the community rather than dissipating energy in unnecessary litigation that would create further division among the people. We commend the government of Sen, Bassey Otu for taking bold step in restoring peace to the community, but ensuring that what belongs to the people were returned to the people in fulfillment of his “people first” mantra. "The Ntoe-in-Council warn members of the public not to buy or lease any part of the land with any individual or group of persons parading themselves falsely as owners of the land. "

OPINION LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS IN CROSS RIVER STATE: MATTERS ARISING By Barr. Venatius Ikem Not a few persons think that I must be mad to be leading the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State into an election everyone believes has been won and lost even before the candidates emerged and the first ballot cast! This is the extremity of the anomaly we as a people are seeking to endorse and normalize instead of challenging and condemning. As a politician, a citizen and a democrat, nothing challenges and insults my sensibilities more than this. Times like this call for men to stand up to be counted. What are these arguments? 1. I am told that there is nothing we can do about it because the State Electoral Commission members are appointed by the Governor and will do his bidding! 2. I am also reminded that, that is what my party the PDP did in the past when she had the same opportunity! 3. I am told that that is what other states are doing. I am not sure I have heard any other attempt at justifying this expected perfidy. First, let me remind us of the maxim that says, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Unless of course challenged. Let me spare us a lecture on the history of democracy as a more preferred form of governance. Let me however not fail to remind us that it is for this reason that the very idea of democracy as a government of the people, elected by the people for the good governance of the people is universally preferred over rulership by kings/monarchies and other autocratic forms of government. The critical factor being our choice as a people. To seek to elevate the elected Governor to the level of a monarch whose preferences are sacrosanct is to admit and give up that we are not in a democracy. The antecedent to the crave to capture power at all levels including the wards representations of the people has its foundation in greed and the perpetuation of corruption. In the past several decades, successive administrations have battled with how to tame this monster in our body polity which has completely eroded any pretense to development at the grassroots level of Governance which is the Local Government Council. Power has increasingly been seized and the Local Administrations completely emasculated. The local economies which used to sustain some existence with local business men and women, local tax collection via licensing and other IGR sources have been halted by successive rampaging state Governors with dire consequences for our rural dwellers. Recently the President Tinubu Led Administration has taken laudable policy steps to attempt to halt these monstrous strides of decadence in our body polity with huge acclaim. This has been buoyed by one of the most celebrated decisions of the supreme count of Nigeria since its creation. The court elaborately enunciated far reaching pronouncements that if implemented will reposition Local Governments as veritable centers of development, moving forward. The Supreme Court by that judgement completely removed Governors from interfering in the disbursement of Local Government Council funds in whatever guise. What has been the response of Governors who shamelessly feel their candy box is being taken away from them? Most Governors have in order to beat the Supreme Court dateline of October for stoppage of Federal Monthly Allocations to Local Governments that are not democratically elected decided to organize Local Government elections by fire by force. In our state, Governor Otu quickly decided first to change the goal post for the election. Instead of 90 days notice for election, he decided that we must conduct the election within 30 days, now maybe 37 days! Why? The argument seems to be so that he does not miss out on the October allocation of funds to Local Governments in Cross River State! You may want to ask, save for reasons unspoken, is our Governor a chairman of council? The State Government’s share of Federal Allocation presently oscillates between N6b and N8b monthly while the Local Governments collectively collect about N5.6bn to N7bn monthly. The Supreme Court judgement did not say such accruable allocations should be lost. It only says they should not be released until democratically elected councils are put in place. So, if the State Government is not complicit in the allegations of appropriating Local Government funds, why the haste not to miss out or even been a delay of the allocations? Why is 90 days so scary that the Governor had to quickly abridge the Laws allowing for a well-organized election to take place at the Local Government level? The Cross River received a total of N118.8bn in 2023. Where has the money been put to use? From January 2024- May 2024, they received another N33.53bn in allocation. Local Governments received N5,690,076,433.76 in March and N5,627,937,803.66 in June. Where is the money and for what purpose has it been out to? And several such astronomical sums totaling between state and Local Government in average of N11bn- 12bn monthly without anything to show for it. We will no longer keep quiet. Statistics are available at the National Bureau of statistics. If the Governor does not thread the path of reasonableness moving forward, we will certainly take steps to challenge all actions in various courts of Law to enforce the pronouncements of the supreme court judgment despite all bottlenecks. To further buttress the point, the Governor made a laughing stock of himself when a forthnight ago, with all the aura of an Emperor proclaimed to his bewildered party leaders his anointed candidates for the Local Government election without any pretense to democratic decorum and norms. Let me use this opportunity to draw Governor Otu’s attention to this less repeated quote by one of America’s favorite Presidents Abraham Lincoln who said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power”. As a victim of so-called PDP injustice in the past, it would demand of him the utmost humility in exercising power, in similar circumstances that his perceived traducers were. Alternatively, if he enjoys seeing his erstwhile traducers groveling at his feet, it means threading the same path, he should prepare to grovel at another’s feet when his time is up. Otherwise visiting Innocent citizens, who voted for him with the purported sins of those he now wines and dines with is standing logic on its head and is an abuse of his claim to God’s deliverance upon his mandate. Cross Riverians may be silent and incapable of courage to tell him to his face the truth, which in any case he may not care to know, but his steps in the face of this election will make or mar his administration forever, and irredeemably. Cross River State is nether Rivers State, nor Akwa Ibom State, Kaduna nor Benue States. We are proudly Cross Riverian. It is most disingenuous for a Governor to tell us he is implementing what is happening in other states when it is in the negative. Should we be expecting the same minimum wage those states have enacted or only the arbitrary seizure of our Local Government funds as a fitting comparison? Let me remind our Governor that as we talk about Local Government elections the State presently “exists” only in Calabar! Odukpani junction to the western flank of the state has been cut off because the road has been rendered impassable. To the North from Odukpani Junction is a nightmare. Never in the history of our State has infrastructure so completely collapsed without any concern by the state Government such as it is today. We celebrated with him the filling of potholes in Calabar metropolis. That is all that can be said of this one and half years old administration of Peoples First Your Excellency. Your People are not feeling first. They are not even feeling last. They are not feeling anything because you have already forgotten them. If the Governor means anything for the people of Cross River sate, he should allow a free and fair Democratic election at the grassroots level so that competition for development and sustainable Local economy can once again be enshrined. This is what will put people First. Venatius A. Ikem is the State Chairman of the PDP in Cross River State.

No fewer than 500 officers and men of the Nigerian Navy have been trained weapon handling, firing and professionalism in a three-days shooting range exercise by the Nigerian Navy Ship Victory (NNS Victory). The exercise which was in conjunction with the Eastern Naval Command, saw the training of all units of the Navy in Calabar area participating. Speaking with newsmen on the exercise, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the NNS Victory, Commodore Rotimi Oderemi described the three-days even that was concluded on Thursday as satisfactory. He said that the shooting range exercise was also used to check Command's operational status as well as professionalism. The Commodore further noted that the exercise will prepare, in advance, operational exigency of the personnel. According to him, "The exercise enabled each units that participated to have experience on weapon handling and firing. "Our aim, is to equip us, in term of training and weapon handling, firing discipline and of course, professionalism which is the bedrock of our work. This is in line with the philosophy of the Chief of Naval Staff; the need to have adequately trained professionals that will be able to meet with the security challenges and other imperatives towards securing our dear nation. "This is a subset of that philosophy; in terms of hands-on training, in terms of assessing our readiness and the status of our equipment. "This is a wake-up call. Again, it is an avenue to show our force and to reassure Nigerians that we are always available to react to security challenge. We are on top of our game."
