The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Calabar Zone says it is set for another industrial action from October 7 should the federal government failed to honour it agreement with the union. The zonal leadership of the union made this position known in a press statement by it zonal coordinator, Happiness Uduk, Chairperson, Abia State University, and Patrick Ushie of University of Cross River State. The ASUU noted that it added another 14-days to the earlier 21days ultimatum it issued the government that elapsed on September 23 to meet up with it demands. Among the 10 demands by the body is the release of the withheld three and a half months’ salaries as a result of the 2022 industrial action. It also demanded for the conclusion of the re-negotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the Draft Agreement by the Nimi Briggs Committee in 2021. Simirlarly, ASUU also want the release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time and adjunct which were affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System otherwise called the IPPIS. Furthermore, it demanded for the release of outstanding third-party deductions such as check-off dues and co-operative contributions by members, which were captured in the 2023 Federal budget While it also demanded for funding for the revitalization of public universities partly captured in the 2023 Federal Government budget among others. "The failure of governments to implement contents of several Memoranda of Understanding and Action between 2013 and 2022 have particularly hampered access to wholesome industrial harmony in public Universities. "Since the inception of this government, all efforts to get them to adopt and implement the said Agreement have been frustrated. With the current economic realities, even the wage award and palliative cannot replace the renegotiated agreement which was reached following the time-tried and honoured principle of Collective Bargaining "Equally very sad is the fact that Government has refused to even address issues that are non-monetary; the most visible being the exit of Universities from the obnoxious IPPIS in spite of a Presidential Directive and a Court order since Dec. 2023," it explained. |
The Cross River chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the constitution of the state electoral umpire and the guidelines released by the commission is fraught with illegality meant to undermine conduct of council election in the state. The party noted that the individuals that constitute the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) were card-carrying members of the state's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement by the chapter chairman, Mr Venatius Ikem, he said constitution of the members is a deliberate strategy by APC to manipulate the electoral process and entrench its dominance at the grassroots level. "This is not only undemocratic but also undermines the integrity of the electoral process," he stated. Simirlarly, Ikem faulted the inconsistencies in the guidelines relaeased for the election by CROSIEC which he noted already runs contrary to the electoral provisions. He said with the guideline, all the registered political parties, including the APC, have already in contravention of the mandatory 30 days meant for the nomination and submission of candidates for the poll. According to him, "As things stand today, this means All Political Parties including the APC are already in breach of this mandatory provision of the guidelines. "The 30 days from the 25th of September when the guidelines were issued is not achievable within the time frame of the entire election scheduled for 26th of October. "This is further compounded by S.7 of the same guideline which provides that a registered political party shall give the Commission at least 21days notice of any congress convened for the purpose of electing chairmen and Councillorship candidates for the poll. "How is it possible to give the Commission 21 days notice before a congress to nominate candidates as well as submit the names of the candidates that emerge not later than 30days before the date of the election from notice on the 25th of September to 26th of October in 30 days. "These contradictions cast serious doubt on the fairness and transparency of the process, raising concerns about the Commission’s impartiality," he noted. The PDP also described as "exhorbitant arbitrary and ridiculous" the chairmanship and Councillorship nomination fees proposed in the guideline and pointed out that the fees are designed to discourage participation. "We condemn this attempt at putting election beyond the reach of the average Nigerian and thereby discouraging grassroots participation at a time of most critical economic hardship and attempting to restrict Political participation to only the rich and wealthy. "We call on the State Government as a matter of urgent State importance to call CROSIEC to order and review the fees with immediate effect. "We also demand that all arbitrary charges and payments imposed on political parties and candidates be reversed immediately. "On the whole, with all sense of responsibility, we call on CROSIEC to as a matter of urgency withdraw these guidelines in the public interest. "The Commission should accordingly set a responsible process in motion to organise an election that will stand the true test of a credible election characterised by free, fair, transparent process that will birth a just election," the party demanded. The PDP Chairman however said inspite of these, the party has resolved to participate in the local government election. "We have resolved to participate in the upcoming local government council elections, despite the inherent flaws in the process, particularly regarding the timing and the discrepancies found in the released timetable. "The PDP remains committed to participating in these elections, but we insist that the process be fair, transparent, and in accordance with the law," he stated. |

Okoro, a lecturer in the department of Mass Communication, University of Calabar, made the call at a one-day media training program with in Yebegoa, Bayelsa on Thursday. The training program with the theme: "Local Government Administration in the Niger Delta: Strengthening Accountability, Inclusive Development Through Investigations, Data And Solution Journalism." The program was sponsored by National Point in conjunction with Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism and Macarthur Foundation. Okoro noted that the failure of good governance at the local government level can be enhance with reportage of activities at that level of government. "There is need for to report or expose development in our rural communities and that only way this can be achieve is through community journalism. "We use to have this before now and that was where the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) held sway in those days but unfortunately, this story have changed, community journalism is almost dead. "Community journalism will also give voice to the voiceless residing in the rural areas and gives them a sense of belonging," he stated. Okoro also advocated for shift in focus to "solution journalism" which he said, will be more impactful that focusing on the problems. Meanwhile, Ms Ibiba DonPedro, Publisher of National Point, says climate change will increase the level of poverty in the country if government at all level continue to pay lip service to mitigate the impact. DonPedro urged media practitioners to focus on issues of under-reported. She particularly mentioned the need to give voice to the rural communities, climate change, and inclusive governance to help build an enviable society. "We are all aware of the happenings in Maidiguri where flood caused by climate change has wrecked havoc in the state. "The Borno flood challenge brings to fore in the need for government to take the issue of climate change seriously. "The reality is that the climate change challenge will increase poverty level in the society and indeed on different parts of the world," she stated. DonPedro urged journalist to embrace training and be well informed in order to be abreast with the change and help spread happenings across the world. She further noted that media practitioners must live with their role of helping to build a better and prosperous society. Comrade Sunny Ifijen, convener of Owan/Akoko-Edo Alliance who clock the golden age today (Saturday), says Gov. Godwin Obaseki has inadvertently celebrated his day well ahead of time. Ifijen noted that the Governor who has been described as "Wake and See" by the people of the state, has given a sense of belonging to the people of Owan and Akoko-Edo extraction with the appointment of two of its sons in key positions in his government. He said that with the positon of Eng. Godwin Omobayo from Akoko-Edo as Deputy-Governor and Blessing Agbebaku from Owan as Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Obaseki has wiped away years of political abandonment the people have been made to suffer since the advent of the present political dispensation. He said aside the two key positions in government, the people have also began to see appreciable infrastructural development in the area. While stressing that Obaseki will be rewarded in due time by the people, Ifijen said Obaseki gift to him on his 50th birthday is one he will leave to cherish for the rest of his life. He said this is so because himself and few others have championed the cause for the area to be given due recognition in terms of political appointments and infrastructural development. He called on sons and daughters of Owan and Akoko-Edo to set aside their personal interest and work for the overall well-being and better of the area and its people. "Beloveth, as I celebrate my 50th birthday, thanking God for my humble beginning, amidst the ambience of family, complexities of business, innuendos of politics, lustre of faith, transience of luxury, effervescent of knowledge, committee of friends and my benevolence of mentors. "Indeed, it has been a sojourn of moments, milestones and memories, yet the mission still unaccomplished," he said. Irrespective of our individual fullfillment, according Prof. P.L.O.Molumba of Kenyan, "You have not succeeded if you do not have a succeeding successor." This is my perspective of the unsuccessful leaders of Owan and Akoko-Edo extract. "My golden jubilee is an opportunity to reflect not only on my life and adventures but to re-echo the need for Akoko-Edo and Owan people to reflect deeper in their shared fate of marginalization which seem pathological under the Afemai bond. "Due to the myopic selfishness of most Akoko-Edo and Owan leaders, we have been manipulated in a slave-master bond called Afemai. "Ironically, the current fate of Akoko-Edo and Owan is contrary to the 2004 founders brotherhood between Justice Ohiwere, Alhaji Kassim Momoh, Chief Charles Lawani, Chief Arogundade, and other Edo-North elites which was aimed at enhancing concerted development of human and infrastructure within Akoko-Edo, Owan and Etsako. "But from 2008, the Afemai romance became a pathological rape of the destinies of Owan and Akoko-Edo for a inordinate Etsako agenda which crescendoed in 2023 when the immediate past Governor (Adams Oshiomole) un-afemaily grab the Edo-North Senate seat from his own Etsako brother (Senator Francis Alimikhena who had spent eight years in addition with the earlier eight years of Senator Kassim Oyofo). "It's noteworthy that Oshiomole became Senator at a time where the Etsakos had an incumbent Deputy-Governor, Minister, Ambassador, Grade 'A' as well as board members. "This is aside the infrastructural development the area have witnessed without fair recourse to the Afemai bond. "Oh! the sting of death on Alhaji Inu Umoru and Barr. Samson Ekhabafe, was a monumental blow on the deserved hopes of Owan and Akoko-Edo in the Afemai Union; wherein the position of Senator(our collective heritage) suppose to be rotational by principle, as well as justifiable and equitable spread of human and infrastructural development within the Afemai tripod (which is coincidentally three Federal Constituencies)," he stated. Legendary Bob Marley said "You can fool see people sometimes but you can not fool ALL the People, ALL the time." "With our array of prominent royal fathers, religious leaders, renowned intellectuals, professional gladiators, business moguls, astute diplomats, and a thriving population that have become a decisive factor in Edo equation, yet it took the benevolence of non-Afemai persons to make Owan and Akoko-Edo become Speaker and Deputy-Governor respectively. Indeed, it is a divine new era where we must re-define the Afemai accord. Otherwise, we will begin to denounce Afemai and just maintain our geographical nomenclature as"EDO-NORTH. "Behold, this struggle goes beyond Comrade Sunny Ifijen, Hon.Omeiza Ogumah, Elder Edgar Freeman, Elder Ozamaye, Rev.Uadia,Elder Erimekena, Engr.Ayo Olowojoba, & others behind the screen. "It is a generational vision for every Progressive Akoko-Edo & Owan Indigenes to propagate across Politics, Religion. Traditional institutions, Academia, Social Groups, Civil Societies, etc. "So far, this ALLIANCE appreciates the developmental trajectory of Dr.Earnest Afolabi Umakhihe. His dogged first-time guber ambition was gallant-lustre semblance of Prof.Ihonbvere's unrivaled 2007 Governorship Campaign of "NA HIM BE DIS". "This ALLIANCE is proud of Speaker Blessing Agbebaku who in the face of political pressure to betray Akoko-Edo, stood for Posterity to give Akoko-Edo the 1st Deputy-Governor Engr.Marvelous Omobayo(our son in whom Akoko-Edo is highly pleased). "Meanwhile, as I thank GOD, family & friends for their birthday gifts, yet a lifetime birthday gift will be to see a UNITY OF PURPOSE meeting organized by any of Excellency Rev.Obadan, Senators Domingo/Yisa Braimoh, Hon.Pally Iriase, Hon. Akpatason, Hon.Abdul Oroh, Hon.Johnson Agbolagba, Otunba Oladele Balogun, Hon. Kabiru Adjoto, Mr.Solomon Ariase IGP rtd, General Areinde rtd, C.P.Dawodu rtd, Mr.Uwaseru, Arik Air, etc. May they not fail the unborn generations of Akoko-Edo & Owan. "Finally, Let me appreciate supporters & beneficiaries of the OWAN & AKOKO-EDO ALLIANCE since 2022. We appreciate those in diaspora for understanding the plight of Owan & Akoko-Edo people. Our Unity of Purpose is the only bargaining power we must explore, 2023 was a Test-run, 2024 will be Louder, 2027 will be decisive."

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP, Auchi Polytechnic chapter days it has suspended the proposed industrial action over the new scheme of service. The chapter chairman, Mr Bamidele Osamudiamen stated this at an emergency congress of the union in Auchi on Friday. He said that the suspension was in accordance to the directive by the national body of the union. He said that the decision was taken by the national body following an agreement by the federal government to suspend the implementation of the new scheme of service that the union had found wanting. It would be recalled that the Auchi Polytechnic chapter of ASUP had given a 15-days ultimatum for the government to suspend the scheme of service. The chapter also embarked on series of protest to register this displeasure over the contentious document. Osamudiamen had condemned the document for promoting what he described as discriminatory practices favouring university degree holders over HND holders in the country. According to him, "The unfair career progression guide in the sector particularly as it affects the teaching and non-teaching staff cadres is a recipe for crises as such is not reflective of the remuneration accruing to the cadres. "The contentious document curiously, unjustifiably and unacceptably elongates the career progression steps of the Lecturer cadre from a 7 step to a 9 step career development cadre and at the same time added an extra year for promotion to the final two levels. "This implies that anyone on the lecturer cadre will now endure a minimum of 26 years from the base to the highest level. "This is not acceptable particularly in view of the fact that this deviates from the norm in other subsectors and that the retirement age in the sector remains unchanged. "We are prepared for indiustrial action of government fails to take the necessary step to revert this scheme abs we are battle prepare for it." At the congress on Friday, Osamudiamen said, "The decision to suspend the earlier scheduled industrial action is in recognition of the fact that the demands of the Union has been met substantially by the government."

The convener of Owan/Akoko-Edo Alliance, Mr Sunny Ifijen has attributed the political marginalization of the area by successive government of the state as reason for underdevelopment of the three Local Government Areas in Edo North senatorial district of the state. Ifijen alleged that successive government completely allaniated the council areas in terms of key appointments at both federal and state levels since the current democratic dispensation. Ifijen made this known in a statement he signed with his secretary, Mr Ogumah Omeiza and made available to newsmen on Monday. He further said that the two Owan and Akoko-Edo were also not reckoned with in terms of distribution of infrastructural and developmental projects from both state and national governments. He said such was the case that the three council areas were now seen as second class citizens of the state in the senatorial district. Ifijen noted that the 2024 governorship election in the state has presented itself for the two Owan and Akoko-Edo to speak with one voice in pursuance of their common cause. "Owan and Akoko-Edo have become a common political toy to be used by every politicians in every election years only to be discarded thereafter. "It is funny that since 1999, the highest federal appointment the area has ever gotten in terms of political partronage was Special Adviser to the then President Olusegun Obasanjo in the person of Prof. Julius Ihonvbere. "Every successive government in the state had always cornered all the key federal appointments to the areas, especially the three Etsako that is part of the Edo North senatorial district. "This is the same situation with any developmental projects to the zone that always end up in Etsako. "Even at the sae level, our people also have suffered similar fate. "Adams Oshiomhole whom we relied on to be the one to stop this seeming marginalisation became the harbinger of the worst to come. "Every opportunity he had as the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and subsequently national leader of the party, he used to allaniate Owan and Akoko-Edo. "Etsako had in two succession produced two Ministers courtesy Oshiomhole. This is aside numerous other key appointments he attracted to the three Etsako. "We just had a momentary recognition through the Godwin Obaseki led administration who had selected two of our sons as Speaker of the state House of Assembly as well as the Deputy Governor of the state. "I still consider this a momentary vcitory because we all know that the appointment of the Deputy Governor was as a result of the impeachment of the former." Ifijen urged Owan and Akoko-Edo to take their destiny in their hands by election a governor who will change the narrative. "We can only do this by being united and speak with one voice come September 21. |

Edet, who spoke with journalists on Friday concerning activities of his ministry and the ongoing road rehabilitation and constructions in Calabar, said, “There was no time in the course of my press briefing that I made reference to former Governor Ben Ayade or his administration. “I had made it clear to reporters that His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu was committed to giving the state capital a face-lift, despite paucity of funds, because Calabar remains the face of Cross River as well as Nigeria’s tourism hub.” The Works Commissioner said he could not have spoken about the financial situation of the state “when I am neither the Commissioner of Finance, the Commissioner for Information nor the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity. “I must state very clearly that I have a lot of respect for the former governor, Prof Ben Ayade, who made me a commissioner during the final year of his administration. “I still owe him a debt of gratitude, even as he remains one of my benefactors.” Edet continued, “The report was totally untrue and a deliberate act of mischief. For iteration and for emphasis, I did not say what was wrongly imputed to me in the news report about the former governor and his administration. “If anything, I was also part of that administration. “It is imperative, therefore, to clarify and state that at no point did I mention the former governor’s name or refer to the state’s treasury. “My remarks during the interview were strictly on matters pertaining to my ministry, where I revealed the dire financial challenges the ministry was facing , owing to the general economic crunch in the country. “As Commissioner for Works, I am not competent to speak on the financial status of the state or its treasury.” Edet maintained that “the attempt to tar the past administration of Governor Ben Ayade, under which I served as Commissioner for Technology, is ostensibly aimed at sowing a seed of discord between the former governor and his successor, Senator Bassey Otu. “It is outright mischief and we condemn such actions in the strongest possible terms.” While urging that the report be disregarded, Edet said he remains committed to assisting Governor Bassey Otu provide quality infrastructural development to the people of the state. |

Ahead of Saturday's governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo, women support group under the aegis of Edo Women In Diaspora (EWID) have began mobilization of women for the former Minister of Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba. This is contained in a statement by the conveners, Barr Roseline Odiye, and Dr Mercy Grant, and made available to newsmen in Benin. Odiye said the group took it as a responsibility to mobilise for the former Minister in order for the state and the people to enjoy good governance when the Minister is elected as Governor. She appealed to the women and the entire citizenry to avoid the mistake of the past where a misfit person was elected governor. She said the mistake that remain an albatross, was caused largely by the people who remained indifferent on whom to govern them. She called on the people, particularly the women, not to sit on the fence this time by coming out to decide, without coercion, who their governor will be. According to her, "we, especially the card-carrying members of the APC, must know that the journey begins on Saturday with the primaries. "We, EIWD, is calling on the people, especially the women to come out en masse to caste our votes to the rightful person to fly the party's flag. "This time, we must not be swayed wlby money or cups of rice to vote against our conscience, we must not be told by few individuals who claim to be our leaders, to vote for their preferred candidate. "This time, we should caste our votes for someone who have shown capacity and have a track record of performance in public office." Odiye appealed to the people to entrust their votes to Agba whose public record as a Commissioner and Minister remained an "eye mark and not ear mark." "Agba didn't only just performed as a Commissioner and Minister, he also has an unblemished record of performance in the private sector. "Let's not be deceived with rhetoric, Agba remains the man to beat and the person who can deliver the desired good governance that the people and the state desperately need now," she stated. Going All the Way: I Have Not and Will Not Withdraw Good day, my fair and committed members of the APC in Edo State; it has come to my attention that ahead of the primaries of our great party, which is scheduled for Saturday, 17th February 2024, some mischievous elements are spreading baseless rumours of my withdrawal from the primaries. My APC family, I would like to explicitly state that I have not withdrawn from the race and will at no point withdraw or step down for any aspirant. I and my supporters are going all the way to the end; we are in this to win. Over the last few months, I have transversed the length and breadth of our state, visiting you in your various local governments and wards to canvass your support for my aspiration. During these visits and interactions, I articulated, in practical terms, how I intend to use my many years of private and public sector experiences to re-engineer the governance process in Edo State with my TRUST Initiative, which is carefully designed to Transform our Rural and Urban Spaces Together. Without a shadow of a doubt, our dear state has been run aground in the past seven and half years under the current administration. It is in a dire state of disrepair where every facet of development has completely broken down and become moribund. This can not be allowed to continue. At this critical juncture, therefore, our state needs a tested hand, a capable hand, a competent hand, an untainted hand, and a loyal hand to take us back to the path of development and prosperity. With all sense of humility, I am the candidate the opposition parties fear the most in the forthcoming governorship election because, I possess the best capacity among the pack to defeat their presumptive candidates. |

The Nigerian Navy has harped on effective leadership and competence on the part of its ratings and officers to promote national development. The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command (ENC), Rear Admiral Olusola Oluwagbire made the call on Wednesday in Calabar at the command's leadership 101 seminar. Represented by the Chief Staff Officer of the ENC, Rear Admiral Abdul-Rasheed Haruna, the FOC noted that the right leadership is needed for the Navy to discharge it responsibility of protecting the nation's territorial waters. He said that the seminar is aimed to equip the officers with the skills set that will enable them discharge their responsibilities effectively and efficiently as leaders. He said their roles as leaders often entails quick planning as well as making swift and well-informed decisions with available resources under extreme conditions. "It is against this backdrop, that the theme of this Seminar: “Optimizing Leadership and Operational Readiness for National Prosperity” was conceptualised. "The objective of the Seminar therefore is to highlight the role of leadership in enhancing our collective preparedness in accomplishing our assigned tasks as a Command that will ultimately enable the Nigerian Navy fulfil its constitutional responsibilities towards ensuring economic prosperity of Nigeria," he stated. Similarly, Commandant of the Navy War College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, said the seminar can best be appreciated through recognising the relationship that exists between leadership and a secure maritime domain. He noted that Nigeria’s maritime domain is bedevilled with crimes such as piracy, sea robbery, kidnapping, crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering as well as illegal unreported and unregulated fishing. He said these crimes have hindered the ability of the country to effectively explore and manage the resources and opportunities in the sector for its economic prosperity, peace and stability as well as for the benefits of neighbouring countries and regions. "The common impact of maritime insecurities on the economic livelihood, prosperity, peace and stability of Nigeria both within and the immediate environment brings to fore the initiation of various collective responses and interventions at national and stakeholders’ levels to tackle the menace. "This Seminar therefore symbolises a strategic collaborative initiative between the Eastern Naval Command and other maritime stakeholders operating within the Command’s Area of Operation. "It also presents a potent strategy to espouse measures to mitigate the increasing maritime insecurities in the immediate environment in order to enhance economic development of the country. "It is on this note that the theme of the seminar is considered apt and timely. "The theme is well thought out to examine the nexus between Nigeria’s maritime security and socio-economic development in the country, with particular focus on leadership and operational readiness of the Eastern Fleet," he stated. Speaking on the topic: "Purposeful Leadership: Your Role in the Nigerian Navy's Anti-Crude Oil Theft Efforts" Commodore Adesola Ojo said the Navy has the onerous responsibility to safeguard the nation's main source of revenue. On her part, Dr Ehizofa Odigie-Okpataku, who spoke on the topic: "The Mind of a Leader" challenged the officers to show effective and efficient leadership at all times. She further charged the personnel to stive to know happenings beyond their immediate environment. On the other hand, Rear Admiral Bodunrin Raji (Rtd.), while speaking on the topic: "Leadership: My Perspective" shared his experiences while in service and how effective leadership will help the Nigerian Navy combat crimes and criminalities in the nation’s territorial waters.

"It is very important to get the basics of training and command right in order to establish the operational objectives needed to achieve the strategic end state. "To the participants and our future operational level commanders, it is your responsibility to understand the fast changing complexities of the contemporary security environment in the world generally and in Nigeria in particular. "You must then situate the Armed Forces within these changes and ask yourself, How do I best function in the face of these challenges? "This is where the Naval Warfare Course suffices to equip you with the necessary skills needed to plan critically analyse complex security situations, develop robust fail-proof plans and execute them to achieve the strategic directives you will be given from time to time," he stated. Speaking on the lecture topic, Rear Admiral Murtala Bashir (rtd), called for the optimisation of the operational level of Naval Warfare training. "With this and the operational level commanders in the Nigerian Navy fully imbibing the appropriate characteristics and understanding of their responsibilities, the service will have a crop of professional officers that will adequately translate strategic directives into precise tactical actions.
